Ray Rex, 91
Ray R. Rex, 91, of Orwell, Ohio, the father of Dale M. Rex of Rootstown, died Monday, Aug. 3, 1998, at Grand Valley Country Manor in Windsor, Ohio.
Born Aug. 13, 1906 in East Trumbull, Ohio, he was the son of Samuel Walter II and Amy Irene (Higley) Rex.
Mr. Rex was an electrical contractor. He was instrumental in organizing the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department, which he served as chief for several years.
In addition to his son, survivors include his daughter, Marcia A. (William) Shipman of Janesville, Iowa; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and Ruth Prine of Orwell. His wife, Elizabeth L. "Bessie," to whom he was married for for 67 years, died May 29, 1994. His son, Donald W.; two brothers and one sister died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Paine Funeral Home, 140 E. Main St., Orwell, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Stanley Winters officiating.
Edward Allen Hayes Delaney
AKRON - Edward Allen Hayes Delaney, the infant son of David A. Delaney and Jamie A. Watts of Akron, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, shortly following birth at Akron City Hospital.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his grandparents, Murl and Linda Nolder of Akron, Keith Watts of Kent and Mr. and Mrs. Hayes Delaney of Canton; great-grandmother, Madeline Hettinger of Akron; and aunt, Kim Braybon of Kent.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna. Arrangements were made by Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel.
Thomas McCullogh, 62
GARRETTSVILLE - Thomas H. McCullough, 62, who owned the Main Street Meat Market for 19 years, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a brief illness.
Born Sept. 15, 1935 in Cleveland, he was the son of Harold and Lanna (Witherstay) McCullough. He was a life resident of Garrettsville.
Mr. McCullough entered the retail meat business while still in high school and became the owner of Main Street Meat Market. He worked several years with Al Lentz at Val's Maintenance in Garrettsville as a carpenter.
He was a 25-year member of the Garrettsville Masonic Lodge. He also served on the Garrettsville Zoning Board.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife,Susan (Magos), whom he married Sept. 7, 1958; son, Ron of Angola, Ind.; daughter, Rhonda McCullough Jones of Garrettsville; one grandchild; and uncle, Robert of Ravenna. His parents and brother, Richard, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home, Garrettsville. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Burial will be in Park Cemetery, Garrettsville.

Esther Donley, 84
Esther Donley, 84, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna, following a long illness.
Born June 12, 1914 in Ferrell, Pa., she was the daughter of John and Grace D'Amico. She had been a Ravenna resident since 1940.
Mrs. Donley had operated a children's shop in Ravenna and also worked for the State Highway Department and Royal Castle Restaurant in Ravenna.
She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna.
Survivors include her brothers-in-law, Robert Donley of Ferrell, Pa. and John Tontimonia of Ravenna. Her husband, James, died in 1969. Her stepmother, Emily D'Amico, and stepsister, Judy Tontimonia, also died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna, with the Rev. David Misbrener officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
Mabel Fagert, 99
PALMYRA - Mabel C. Fagert, 99, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at her home, following a period of declining health.
Born Nov. 29, 1898 in Sardis, Ohio, she was the daughter of Ferdinand and Henrietta Frieden.
Mrs. Fagert was a homemaker.
She attended the United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls and was a past president of the Stow Culture Club.
Survivors include her daughter, Hazel Eiber of Alliance and nine grandchildren. Her husband, Herman W., died in 1983. Her son, Herman W. Jr., died in 1925, and her daughter, Pauline Thomas, died in 1990.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday at East Akron Cemetery on Market Street.

Betty Jean Meadows-Mossor, 52
Betty Jean Meadows-Mossor, 52, of Leonard Boulevard, Kent, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at University Hospitals of Cleveland.
Born Dec. 18, 1945 in San Antonio, Texas, she was the daughter of John and Evelyn Brauchle.
Mrs. Meadows-Mossor retired from Kmart, where she had been a manager. She was a member of the Streetsboro Community Church.
Survivors include her husband, Roger, whom she married Sept. 4, 1993; son, John Meadows of Kent; daughters, Teresa Farley of Palmyra and Belinda Meadows of Brimfield; stepsons, Ronald Mossor of Ravenna and Mike Mossor of Brimfield; seven grandchildren; mother, Evelyn Brauchle of San Antonio, Texas; brothers, Gerald and Ronald Brauchle, both of San Antonio, Texas; and sisters, Patricia Timmons, Billie Clifton and Rexene Brauchle, all of San Antonio, Texas and Donna Williams of San Diego. Her father died previously.

Ruth Neff, 63
Ruth Neff, 63, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at Akron General Medical Center.
Born March 6, 1935 in Mt. Ash, Ky., she was the daughter of Jesse and Jicie (Stanaford) Adkins. Formerly of Streetsboro, she had lived in Ravenna for 12 years.
Mrs. Neff worked as an extrusion operator for the Weather Chems. Corp. in Twinsburg until she retired in 1997.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Streetsboro.
Survivors include her husband, Richard, to whom she was married for 43 years; sons, Richard, Bob and Jim, all of Kent, and David of Aurora; daughters, Donna Hiles of Glenville, W.Va., and Debi Wischmeier of Twinsburg; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and brothers, George and Morris Adkins and sister, Ruby Gangl-Ridenour, all of Cincinnati.

Vera Pendleton, 70
Former Brimfield resident Vera "June" Pendleton, 70, of Akron, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at her home.
Born June 11, 1928, she was the daughter of Charles C. and Helen (Graff) Frick. She had lived in Brimfield until moving to Akron in 1989.
Mrs. Pendleton had worked as an inspector at Ametek-Lamb Electric Co. in Kent and a secretary at Kent State University.
She was a member of Mogadore Baptist Church.
She was an avid seamstress.
Survivors include her husband, Herbert; daughters, Linda (Robert) Kranak of Akron, Jill (Gary) Wimer of Kent and Joyce (David) Coffield of Virginia Beach, Va.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Robert (Marge) Frick of Akron; and sister, Beatrice Ringler of Kent.

Amelia Ann Brown, 67, of Masury, a former Kent resident, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, at O'Brien Nursing Home in Masury.
Born Aug. 27, 1930 in Kent, she was the daughter of Howard and Irene (Maurice) Brown. She had lived in Kent for most of her life.
She worked at Fairhaven Workshop in Niles.
She was a member of the Universalist Church in Kent.
Survivors include several cousins. A brother died previously.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Arrangements were made by Clemente-McKay Funeral Home, 700 Fifth St., Struthers. Burial will be in Lowellville Cemetery.
Ethel M. Ruttan, 92
Ethel M. Ruttan, 92, of Saint Luke's Place, Ontario, Canada, the mother of Keith Ruttan of Kent, died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at her home.
In addition to her son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Donna Ruttan of Kent, survivors include her sons, Howard (Cory) of Stouffville, Ontario, and Ross (Marilyn) of New Braunsfels, Texas; daughter, Helen (Bill) Angus of Cambridge, Ontario; 16 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Her husband, George, and two brothers and four sisters, died previously.
Services were held Monday in Cambridge, Ontario. Burial was in Palmerston Cemetery.

Louise Paukovich, 69, of Leavittsburg, died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Desert Springs Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev., while vacationing.
Born Aug. 29, 1929 in Ohio, she was the daughter of John and Frieda (Jerome) Ferko.
Mrs. Paukovich was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Charles W., whom she married in June 1953; son, Charles A. of Champion; two grandchildren; and sister, Mary Mamula of Vienna, Ohio.

Graveside services will be held Saturday for former area resident Jimmy W. Williams, 65, of San Marcos, Texas, who died Tuesday, August 4, 1998, at his home.

Edward J. Philpot, 52
Edward Joseph Philpot, 52, of Portland, Ore., died of natural causes Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at his home.
Born June 20, 1946 in Braddock, Pa., he had lived in Portland for eight years.
Mr. Philpot was a truck driver for Tech Equipment.
A Vietnam War veteran, he was a U.S. Navy SEAL.
Survivors include his wife, Susan (Overholt), whom he married April 30, 1994; son, Leon of Portland; daughter, Stephanie Chapman of Riverside, Calif.; three grandchildren; mother, Alva Philpot of Riverside, Calif.; and sisters, Frances Swope and Madeline Scherler, both of Portland, Janice Fear of Akron and Alva Gill of Norco, Calif.
Cremation has taken place. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lotus Isle Park, Tomahawk Island Drive. Arrangements are being handled by Hustad Funeral Home, 7232 N. Richmond Ave., Portland, Ore.

Gordon M. Cooper, 73
Former Garrettsville resident Gordon Max Cooper, 73, died Saturday, July 4, at Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus.
Mr. Cooper retired from Capital University in Columbus after 20 years of service.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth; daughter, Jody (Steven) Hicks; two grandchildren; and sister, Marguerite (Robert) Tinlin of Garrettsville. His parents, Bert and Agnes, brother, Malcolm, and sister, Marie Sweda, died previously.
Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were made by Evans Funeral Home in Columbus.
Harry L. Shade, 67
Harry Lee Shade, 67, of Newton Falls, died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.
Born April 15, 1931 in Newton Falls, he was the son of Roy Bower and Cora Mae (Fenton) Shade. He was a life resident of Newton Falls.
Mr. Shade was an inside driver for General Motors until he retired. He also was a boiler operator/custodian and bus driver for the Newton Falls School District and was employed with Rockwell International until 1957.
He was a member of the Newton Falls United Methodist Church and a life member and past commander of American Legion Post No. 236 and Post No. 709. He enjoyed watching the Cleveland Browns and the Cleveland Indians.
Survivors include his sons, Harry E. of Dublin and Staff Sgt. John of Ft. Meade, Md.; daughter, Mrs. Tim (Cyndi) Hogue of Newton Falls; four grandchildren; brothers, Lawrence L. of Alliance, Delbert W. of Warren and Roy B. of Atwater; sister, Hazel Marie Sindledecker of Newton Falls; and companion, Kathy Christy of Newton Falls. His brother, Evan; and sisters, Opal James and Velma Davis, died previously.

Grace Marie Allman, the infant daughter of Scott and Jane-Marie Allman of Ravenna, died Wednesday, Aug. 12, 1998, shortly after birth at University Hospital in Cleveland.
In addition to her parents, survivors include her grandparents, Harlan and Belva Adkins and Robert and Marjorie Allman; great-grandmother, Marie Adkins; aunts, Vyktorya Adkins and Sandra Allman; and uncle, Jeff Allman, all of Ravenna.
A private service will be held Tuesday in the chapel of First United Methodist Church of Ravenna, with the Rev. Thomas Poremba officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Lloyd L. Alexander, 86
Lloyd L. Alexander, 86, of Leavittsburg, died of cancer Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, in Southington.
Born Feb. 19,1912 in Chagrin Falls, he was the son of William and Iva May (Laughlin) Alexander. He had lived in the Leavittsburg area since 1934.
Mr. Alexander was a drill press operator at Wean United in Austintown, until he retired in 1977. He also worked at Federal Machine and Welding Co. in Warren.
He was a charter member of the Warren Seventh Day Adventist Church. His hobbies included hiking, swimming, camping and fixing watches and clocks.
Survivors include his daughters, Mrs. Lee (Bonnie) Westfall of Leavittsburg and Mrs. Donald (Margaret) Hall of Southington; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. His wife, Mary E. (Brode), whom he married May 21, 1935, died Nov. 21, 1971. A daughter, Nancy Lou, and brothers, Leonard Sr. and Raymond, died previously.

Chris L. Ferrell, 27
BRIMFIELD - Services will be held Saturday for Chris L. Ferrell, 27, who drowned Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998 in Mogadore Reservoir. His body was recovered Wednesday.
A life resident of the Akron and Brimfield areas, he was the son of James and Joan Ferrell. He was a graduate of Field High School and Maplewood Joint Vocational School.
Mr. Ferrell was a roofer for Simon Roofing Co.
He attended Hartville Church of God.
Survivors include his brother, Jim (Patti) Ferrell of Springfield Township; sisters, Candy Ware of Akron and Lisa (Scott) Lucien of Brimfield; grandmother, Eulah Yerrick of South Carolina; and 11 nieces and nephews. His parentsdied previously.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hillside Memorial Park in Akron, with the Rev. Michael Hone officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Billow's Tallmadge Chapel.
William Moorhouse, 78
NELSON - William Moorhouse, 78, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 1998, unexpectedly at his home.
The cause of death is under investigation by the Portage County coroner.
Born Jan. 20, 1925 in West Virginia, he was the son of Bung and Elizabeth Moorhouse.
Mr. Moorhouse was employed at Carlon in Mantua.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his son, James L. of Nelson; and one grandchild. His wife, Luise W., who died Feb. 11, 1998. His brothers, Ernest, Alfred and Louis "Red"; and sister, Elizabeth, died previously.
Private services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville.
Margaret E. Knapp
ROOTSTOWN - Margaret E. Knapp, 81, died Thursday, Aug. 13, 1998, at the Portage County Nursing Home in Shalersville after a short illness.
Born Feb. 22, 1917 in Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of John and Martha (Ayers) Wise. She had lived in Rootstown for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Knapp had worked for the Portage County Farmers Co-op store in Rootstown.
Survivors include her son, Michael of Rootstown; daughter, Judy Weeks of Ravenna; stepson, Sylvan Jr. of Ravenna; stepdaughter, Ruth Hall of Maitland, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Her husband, Sylvan Knapp Sr., died in 1964. A son, David; daughter, Becky; and two grandchildren also died previously.
At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements were made by the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.
Memorials may be made to the Portage County Nursing Home Activity Fund.
