Howard Caplinger
Howard Luke Caplinger, 79, of Akron, died of cancer Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at his home.
Born Sept. 11, 1918, in Smithville, Tenn., he was the son of John and Lourana Caplinger.
Mr. Caplinger worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 35 years until he retired in 1980.
He was a member of United Rubber Workers Local No. 2, Disabled American Veterans, Goodyear Retirees Club and the Akron Baptist Temple Golden Agers Club.
Survivors include his sons, Jerry of Akron and David (Rebecca) of Kent; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Frances Jones of Nashville, Tenn. His wife, Thelma, died in 1996.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Schermesser Funeral Home in Akron. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Akron Baptist Temple. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park in Akron.

Michael Ludick
Servcies will be held Saturday for Michael M. Ludick, 91, formerly of Burnett Road, Kent, who died Wednesday, May 6, 1998, at Kent Quality Care Nursing Home.
Born July 27, 1906 in Byesville, Ohio, he was the son of Andrew and Mary (Repasky) Ludick.
Mr. Ludick was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver for Sun Pipeline and Hugo Sand and Gravel Co., retiring in 1975.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines Corps. He was a former member of the Kent Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Alba F. (Bell), whom he married July 2, 1933; son, Robert (Carolyn) of Kent; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; brother, William R. of Mansfield; and sisters, Helen Cox of Akron and Catherine Hall of Hollywood, Fla. His brothers, John, Alex, Joe and Andrew Jr., and sister, Mary Honeychuck, all died previously.
There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grandview Memorial Park Chapel in Ravenna. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park. Arrangements are being handled by Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent.

Madge Rose
Madge Litwiler Rose, 81, of Kent, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Akron City Hospital after a brief illness.
Born Jan. 1, 1917 in Springboro, Pa., the daughter of Isaac and Georgia Belle (Partch) Litwiler. She formerly lived in Pennline, Ohio.
Mrs. Rose was a registered nurse, practicing for more than 30 years at hospitals in Ohio and Pennsylvania. She assisted in the delivery of hundreds of babies earlier in her career and was a nursing supervisor later in her career. She trained at Ashtabula General Hospital's Nursing School.
She was a member of First Christian Church of Kent and a former member of Pennline Church of Christ.
Survivors include her son, George C. (Jane) Rose of Kent; four grandchildren and their mother, Jackie Rose of Kent; brother, Lee "Teeter" Litwiler of Pierpont; and sisters Mary Elizabeth Naig of Minneapolis and Mercedes Knight of Smyrna, Tenn. Her husband, George Sr., to whom she was married 50 years, grandsons, Jeffrey and Darin Rose, and brothers Roger "Bud" Litwiler, Grant Litwiler, Isaac "Jim" Litwiler Jr., died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 3 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Saturday at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent, with a prayer service immediately following, the Rev. Dr. Daniel Griggs officiating. ALVA HOUT
Alva B. Hout, 82, of Ravenna, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital following a long illness.
Born April 19, 1916 in Buffalo N.Y., she was the daughter of August and Mary (Bonner) Rose. She had lived in Ravenna for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Hout was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Ravenna V.F.W. Women's Auxiliary.
Survivors include her son Harold Sincerney of Hewitt, Texas; daughter Gloria Hayes of Ravenna; nine grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren; brother, August Rose Jr. of Orchard Park, N.Y., and sister Vera Reese of Jamestown, Pa. Her husband, Harold E., died in 1958. Sisters Mary Sloan and Margaret Schultz also died previously.
Calling hours will be held one hour prior to the 1 p.m. service Monday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. The Rev. Bud Votaw will officiate. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.
MICHAEL WILAND
Former Randolph resident Michael H. "Mick" Wiland, 61, died Friday, May 8, 1998 at the home of his former wife in Ravenna.
Born May 3, 1937, he was the son of Charles F. and Catherine (Miller) Wiland.
Mr. Wiland had formerly worked in sales for B.F. Goodrich.
Survivors include his former wife, Elizabeth "Libby"; son, Michael A. (Suzanne) of Ravenna; daughters, Shelly (Jay) Walter of Ravenna, Melanie of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mary Ann (Marlin) Hammonds of Randolph; seven grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. There will be no funeral services.

Reidar A. Nome, 74, died May 7, 1998.
He was born in Pittsburgh and had lived in Cuyahoga Falls since 1955.
Mr. Nome, a self-employed salesman, was an active member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cuyahoga Falls.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his sons, William (Carolyn) of Kent and Steven (Roxanne) of Cuyahoga Falls; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; and brother Harold (Grace) Nome of Bloomfield, Conn.

Dorothy L. Moulton
Dorothy L. Moulton, 89, of Ravenna, died Thursday, May 7, 1998, at the Portage County Nursing Home following several years of declining health.
Born Oct. 21, 1908, in Wooster, she was the daughter of Emedio and Sarah M. (Graser) Yacavona. She formerly resided in Ravenna with her grandson, Billie Hanson.
Mrs. Moulton was a homemaker. She worked at the Ravenna Arsenal during World War II.
She was a member of New Testament Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son John S. (Karon) of Benton, Ark; daughter, Nellie Mae Carr; three grandchildren; and brother, Charles Yacavona of Ravenna. Her husband, Harold E., died Nov. 27,1992.

Roberta Sapp
Roberta Mary "Bobbi" Sapp, of North Mantua Street, Kent, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, at her home.
Born in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Robert and Rose (Burdis) Sittner.
Mrs. Sapp was a member of St. Patrick Church, the Kent Junior Women's League and the Federated Democratic Women of Portage County.
She worked at Cuyahoga and Portage County election polls for the past 30 years and was a former president of the Home and School Association for St. Patrick's Elementary School in Kent. For the past 15 years, she served as a member of the Robinson Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, John Edward Sapp; daughter, Mrs. Jeff (Lisa) Daris of Columbus; and sister, Rosamond (Charles) Stidam of Spokane, Wash.

GARRETTSVILLE - Services were held Monday for Frank G. Burgwin, 91, who died Thursday, May 7, 1998 at his home, following a long illness.
Born June 14, 1906 in Cleveland, he was the son of Frank and Henrietta (Griswald) Burgwin. A former Geneva resident, he had lived in Garrettsville for nine years.
Mr. Burgwin was a film projectionist for 50 years, last working for Southgate Cinema in Maple Heights.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2243 of Geneva and a member of the Cleveland Moving Picture Operators Union, Local No.160.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes (Rees), whom he married May 16, 1972; sons, Frank Jr. of Mesa, Ariz., Walter of Geneva, Harvey of California and Earl of Florida; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His brothers, Gordon and Walter, died previously.
Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg. Arrangements were made by Mallory DeHaven and Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville.

Charles E. Kish
Charles E. Kish, 88, of Youngstown, the father of the Rev. Carl Kish, pastor of St. Robert Catholic Church in Cortland, died Monday, May 11, 1998 at Forum Health North Side Medical Center in Youngstown.
Mr. Kish retired in 1971 from Commercial Intertech, where he was employed for 40 years.
He was a member of St. Matthias Church in Youngstown.
In addition to Father Kish, who is a former associate pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna, survivors include his wife Sophie (Chamer), who he married July 13, 1932.

STREETSBORO - Linda L. (Kret) Katona Robinson, 49, of Streetsboro, died Sunday, May 10, 1998.Born April 22, 1949, she was the daughter of Stanley J. Friends and Mildred Kret.She was a homemaker.
In addition to her mother, survivors include her daughter, Kimberly (Michael) Boswell of Streetsboro and Robin (Sam) Bornino; four grandchildren; and sister, DeeAnn Kosik. Her father and her husband, Andrew, died previously.

Elinor Miller
A memorial service for former Kent resident Elinor Miller, 78, who died Wednesday, April 1, 1998, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent.
Born Feb. 16, 1920 in Franklin Township, she was the daughter of Adolph and Blanche (Nichols) Miller.
Miss Miller was a registered nurse and served in the armed forces during World War II. She also worked as an instructor at a nursing school in South Dakota and worked at several nursing homes and worked as an in-home private duty nurse. She most recently worked at Kmart.
Survivors includ several nieces and nephews. Two sisters died previously.
The Rev. Robert West will officiate at the memorial service.
Lillian Inbody
Lillian Mabel Inbody, 91, of 38349 Lakeview Road, Sardis, Ohio, the mother of Mrs. John (Mary) Lallathin of Rootstown, died Sunday, May 10, 1998 at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta, Ohio.
Born March 2, 1907 in Monroe County, Ohio, she was the daughter of Edward and Minerva (Eddy) King.
Mrs. Inbody was a member of Woodsfield Church of Christ.
In addition to Mrs. Lallathin, survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth (Virgil) Shook of Sardis and Mary (John) Lallathin of Rootstown; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Paul L., died in 1990. Her brothers, Earl and John King, and sister, Elizabeth Keller, died previously.

Johnnie Lucille Word, 78, of Manchester, Tenn., a former Ravenna resident, died Sunday, May 10, 1998, after a long illness.
Born in Jackson County, Ala., she was the daughter of William and Viola Ray Smith. She had lived in Ravenna for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Word had worked for Word Lumber Co. in Manchester.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Manchester and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Women's Auxiliary.
Survivors include her daughters,Ja Nelle (Joe) Burt of Manchester and Judy (Edward) Abernathy of Fort Payne, Ala.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters. Her husband, Wallace C., died in 1980.

Fred L. Gardner, 86, of Ravenna died Monday.
Born Sept. 29, 1911 in Ashley, Ohio, he was the son of Charles W. and Anna (Wilson) Gardner.
Mr. Gardner was a sales manager for Cipra Ford in Ravenna for many years. He was a former member of the Masons and the Ravenna Elks.
Survivors include his wife, Henritetta, to whom he was married 65 years; son Richard (Judith) of Concord, Ohio; daugter, Pat Huebner of Kent; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His brothers, Russell and Charles, and sister, Pauline Whitney, died previously.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Mark Lattimer officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
Rhea Mullenix
BRIMFIELD - Rhea V. Mullenix, 71, a 38-year resident of Brimfield, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at her home.
Born March 8, 1927 in Akron, she was the daughter of Roy and Lena (Miller) Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Mullenix was a shipping clerk for Milo's Beauty Warehouse in Stow, and a bus driver for Field Schools.
She was a member of Kenmore Church of Christ in Akron, where she directed the church choir. She was an avid music lover.
Survivors include her husband, James, to whom she was married 53 years; sons, David (Karen), and James (Anne), both of Brimfield; daughter, Mrs. Bill (Marlene) Ware of Brimfield; and six grandchildren. A brother, Wilbur, died previously.

KENNETH CUMMINS, 86
Former Kent State University professor Kenneth Burdette Cummins, 86, of New Washington, Ohio, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998, at the Heartland of Bucyrus.
Dr. Cummins joined the KSU mathematics department in 1957 and taught until he retired in 1993. During his years at KSU, he directed and taught in more than 30 summer and in-service National Science Foundation Institutes in addition to his regular class work. He served briefly as chairman of the department, and conducted many workshops for teachers in Northeastern Ohio.
He received the KSU Alumni Association's Distinguished Teaching award twice and the KSU President's Medal for service to the university. He was the first recipient of the OCTM Chrstofferson-Fawcett Award in 1981 for service in mathematics to Ohio. He was also recognized by several groups in the New Washington area, including an honorary degree from Tiffin University, which he received on May 2.
He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University and earned a master's degree in mathematics from Bowling Green State University. He earned a doctorate in mathematics and mathematics education from Oho State University in 1958.
He was a member of the national and Ohio councils of Teachers of Mathematics, the Ohio Section of the Mathematical Association of America as well as Sigma Xi and other professional organizations. He was also elected to several honorary fraternities, including Phi Beta Kappa. He co-authored a text on the teaching of mathematics.
Survivors include his sister-in-law, Darlene Cummins of New Washington and several cousins. His brother, Robert R., died previously.

KIM BRECKENRIDGE, 41
Former Kent resident Kim A. Breckenridge, 41, died Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, Fla., after a long illness.
Born July 21, 1956 in Akron, he was the son of James and Dolores Breckenridge. A graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent, he had lived in Florida for seven years.
Mr. Breckenridge was a paramedic with Care Ambulance when he lived in Kent. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kent.
Survived include his parents of Brooksville, Fla., and his brother, Greg (Cathy) of Hollywood, Fla.
Cremation will take place. Memorial services will be announced later.
CHRISTOPHER PRISBY, 34
Former Kent resident Christopher Alvin Prisby, 34, of Fairview Park, died Saturday, May 9, 1998, at the Cleveland Clinic .
Born Oct. 8, 1963 in Ravenna, he was the son of Alvin and Tanya (Espinosa) Prisby. A 1982 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent, he moved to Fairview Park three years ago.
Mr. Prisby was a student at Allstate Barber College in Cleveland. He attended Kent State University.
Survivors include brother, Michael of Arizona; sister, Mrs. Anita (Kelvin) Green of Hawaii; grandmother, Alice Prisby of Ravenna; and Catherine Landers of Fairview Park.
Calling hours will be held from 4 p.m. until services at 7 p.m. Friday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.
John Duncan
Family and friends of John Duncan, who died Wednesday after being hit by a tractor trailer on Mogadore Road, are still trying to cope with the tragic loss of the 14-year-old Field Junior High School student.
The eighth-grade student is remembered by family and friends for his good nature and love of sports.
"I can tell you he was such a loving kid, and you got nothing but hugs and kiss from him," said Diane Remis, John's aunt. "He just touched everybody's hearts. (His mother) wants to say that she loves him so much."
The Brimfield teen fished with his stepfather, played football at school and like to hunt and ride his motorcycle, she said.
"He loved sports, and just enjoyed life, and his family," she said. "He's going to be so totally missed."
Calling hours were held Thursday for the Brimfield boy who was reportedly hit near the end of the driveway at his Mogadore Road home while on a motorized dirt bike. He was headed to Brimfield's Triple D Park to watch a baseball game.
The loss has been felt at Field junior high, where counselors and area ministers have been on hand to help students deal with their grief.
"We think they went very well," said Principal Gino Calceiof of the grief sessions. "Some kids had to grieve through the process all day long. It all went as well as can be expected."
John will be missed by teachers and classmates at school, where he was a popular student, Calcei said.
"The kid always had a smile on his face, he was a good student," he said. "He was just the kind of guy everyone liked to know."
John was scheduled to take part in a school field trip to Washington Thursday, and his brother Bryan visited the school early Thursday morning to assure the eighth- and ninth-grade students that the family wanted the trip to proceed as schedule. With calling hours scheduled for Thursday evening, the district made arrangements for two students who traveled to Washington and wanted to attend calling hours to return early from the field trip, Calcei said.
The son of Denise and Richard Petron of Kent and John and Debbie Duncan of Pennsylvania, John participated in football, baseball and Boy Scouts.
In addition to his parents, survivors include his brother, Bryan; sister, Nicole; half brother, Justin; half sister, Christy; grandparents, Mona and Raymond Duke, Betty Petron, Jack and Phyllis Duncan; aunts and uncles, Paul and Connie Cunningham, Diane and Steve Remis; David and Mary Duke, Ronald and Robert Petron, Randy and Amy Petron; cousins Chad, Holly, Monaca and David; great grandmother, Hattie Duke; and great aunt, Lorraine Bender.

Francis Ritzinger
Francis "Frank" Ritzinger, 62, of Valleyview Street, Kent, died Thursday, May 14, 1998 at Hospice Care Center in Copley Township.
Born June 10, 1935 in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of Bernard Eugene and Florence Catherine (Cowan) Ritzinger.
Mr. Ritzinger was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving from 1953 to 1961. He was a journalist for many years before coming to Kent where he completed his bachelor's degree in journalism and his master's degree in political science at Kent State University. He was a faculty member from 1971 to 1981 at the KSU School of Journalism and the adviser for the Daily Kent Stater. He then was director of public relations for the International Chemical Workers Union in Akron until his retirement in January 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Susan (Fitzgerald), whom he married in 1981; sons, Gregory (Deborah) of Cuyahoga Falls and Christopher (Sherry) of Kent; daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Karla) Jones of Folsom, Calif., Victoria Ritzinger and Kurt Schlicker of Lompoc, Calif., Lucille Lohr of Kent and Heidi Lohr of Cleveland; seven grandchildren; brothers, Gene (Joan) of Seattle and Gerald (Joan) of Pine Bush, N.Y.; and sister, Mrs. Jack (Grace) McDevitt of North Bergen, N.J.

George D. "Shorty" Robertson Jr., 64, of Novelty, died Wednesday, May 13, 1998 at Geauga Regional Hospital in Chardon.
Born March 24, 1934 in Barton, he was the son of George D. Sr. and Ruth (Pysell) Robertson.
He was a die setter for the Ford Motor Co. in Walton Hills for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He also taxied the Amish part-time for about 10 years following his retirement.
Mr. Robertson was a member of the Rod and Gun Club in Maryland. He enjoyed bowling, softball, and going to horse shows with his daughters.
Survivors include his wife Pearl (Wilt), whom he married April 19, 1956 in Oakland, Md.; daughters, Carol R. Summers of Garrettsville, Janet (Martin) G. Kresja of Middlefield, and Dorothy L. (Robert) Culp of Garrettsville; seven grandchildren; brother, James C. of Barton, Md.; and sister, Ruthann Zacot of Hagerstown, Md. His parents and his brother, Charles E. died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Russell Golden Rule Funeral Home in Middlefield. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Boals Funeral Home in Barton, Md. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Barton.

HIRAM - Mariann J. Simera, 68, of Hiram died Thursday, May 14,1998 at her sister's home in Mantua.

John Wendelken
John "Jack" Wendelken, 73, of Bucyrus, died Monday, May 11, 1998 at his home following an illness.
Born July 18, 1924 in Ravenna, he was the son of Harold W. and Laura (Funk) Wendelken Sr.
Mr. Wendelken's family moved to Bucyrus in 1970 from Kent. He was a 1942 graduate of Kent State High School and attended Kent State University for three years. He graduated from the Akron Art Institute and from traffic manager school. He was employed by Swan Hose Division in Bucyrus as a freight cost manager, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of Christ Church Episcopal in Kent. He served on the Vestry as junior and senior warden and taught and was superintendent of the Sunday school. He was founder and member of St. Andrews Club and the Canterbury Club of the church. In Bucyrus, Mr. Wendelken was a member of the former St. James Episcopal Church, where he was a member of the Vestry and taught Sunday school. He was a member and past president of the Bucyrus Kiwanis Club for 26 years, serving eight board of directors' terms and was the community services chairman for 20 years. He was a member of the Bucyrus Salvation Army board and the Mansfield ARE.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy (Bond), whom he married Nov. 23, 1968; sons, John of Cleveland and Jim of Bucyrus; and daughter, Mary, of Tampa, Fla. His brothers, Harold Jr. and Robert, and sister, Laura Laurenson, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Munz-Pirnstill Funeral Home in Bucyrus where services will follow at 3 p.m. Sunday.

Dale G. Rosenow
Dale G. Rosenow, 73, of Ravenna died Friday, May 15, 1998 at Altercare in Ravenna after an extended illness.
Born Dec. 15, 1924 in Alliance, he was the son of Gustave and Letta (Strong) Rosenow. He had been a resident of Ravenna since 1947.
Mr. Rosenow formerly operated an auto body repair shop in Ravenna for many years.
Survivors include daughters, Sandy Dunlavy and Shirley Leiher, both of Ravenna; and five grandchildren.
No calling hours will be held. A graveside funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna with the Rev. Ed Peterson of the Brady Lake United Methodist Church officiating. Arrangements are being handled by Green's Funeral Services in Mantua.
