Elmer Wise
ROOTSTOWN - Elmer O. Wise, 79, of Rootstown, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna. Born Aug. 18, 1919, in Brimfield, he was the son of Orlando and Pearl (Kurtz) Wise. Mr. Wise owned and operated Wise Greenhouse in Rootstown. Survivors include his wife, Thelma (Bower), to whom he was married for 49 years; sons, Kevin of Rootstown and James of Ravenna; daughter, Patricia Olsen of Brimfield; brothers, Paul of Suffield, Harry of Suffield, Glenn of Plant City, Fla., Alfred of Lake Havasue, Ariz., Harold of Atwater and Chester of Atwater; sisters, Mary Bolyard of Suffield, Hazel Burt of Mogadore and Edna Smith of San Antonio, Texas; and four grandchildren. Two brothers died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Phillip Miller officiating. Burial will be in Restland Cemetery in Brimfield.

Homer Zink
Homer Edward Francis Zink, of Kent, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 1998, at his home after a long battle with cancer. Born Aug. 14, 1940 in Cleveland, he was the son of Rose (Csik) Zink and Homer Edward Zink of Cleveland. He was a longtime Kent resident. Mr. Zink had been a machinist, engineer, musician, carpenter, mechanic, goldsmith for Case Western Reserve School of Dentistry, and general odd jobber. He was an accomplished mini and micro sculptor, working with gold, silver, bronze, platinum and clay. He was also a painter, jeweler, calligrapher, musician, poet, scholar, motorcycle enthusiast, and sailor. Survivors include his sons, David W. of Cleveland and Aaron Pudzer; and daughter, Loretta Ann. There will be no calling hours. Mr. Zink donated his body to medical science. A memorial gathering will take place at 8 tonight at Brady's Cafe, corner of Main and Lincoln streets in Kent.

Ada Deaner
Former area resident Ada B. Deaner, 74, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, in Florida. Born July 3, 1924 in Jones Mills Pa., she was the daughter of Charles and Irene (Kalp) Layton. Mrs. Deaner retired from Ametek-Lamb Electric Co. in Kent after 25 years of service. She was a member of Ravenna Assembly of God and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, Harry, to whom she was married 41 years; son, Robert Miller of Zephyrhills, Fla.; daughters, Jane (Harry) Anderson Dunedin, Fla., and Darlene Pardee of Ravenna; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Beck officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery in Twinsburg.

Al Lietzow
Al Lietzow, a former Ravenna resident, died Sunday, Nov. 15, 1998, in Bradenton, Fla. Mr. Lietzow was a teacher for the Ravenna City Schools for several years. He was a district commander of the American Legion in Florida. He is survived by his wife, Anne (Trenner), to whom condolences may be sent at 5203 5B St. East, Bradenton, Fla., 34203. Cremation has taken place. A service will be held in Rittman at a date to be announced.

Edna Kimpton
Edna V. Kimpton, 87, of Troy Township, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, at Blossom Hill Care Centre in Huntsburg. Born July 16, 1911 in Hiram, she was the daughter of John and Bessie (Ambrose) Satterlee. She was a life resident of Troy Township. Mrs. Kimpton had worked in the Berkshire school district cafeteria and as a school cook for more than 20 years. She worked on the family farm all of her life. She enjoyed music, playing the organ, polkas and cooking for her family. Survivors include her husband Ed, whom she married Aug. 14, 1929; sons, Donald G. (Doris) of Parma and Howard J. (Peg) of Ashtabula; daughter, Ruth (Roger) Hull of Troy; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brother, Junior of Nelson; and sister, Katherine of Nelson. Her brother, Kenneth, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. until services at 1 p.m. Friday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. The Rev. Gerald M. Sanders will officiate. Burial will be in Troy Township Cemetery.

Patricia D. Gillette
Patricia D. Gillette, 35, of Lake Street, Kent, died Friday, Nov. 20, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Oct. 12, 1963 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Selden M. and Norma J. (Rundle) Gillette. Miss Gillette was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary-Kent State University Parish (Newman Center) and was active in church functions. Survivors include her brother, Don L. (Cheryl) of Jackson Township; sisters, Karen (Larry) Neff of Kent and Sharol (Dennis) Muzak of Alpharetta, Ga.; grandmother, Mary Rundle of Berea; and longtime friend and companion, Norman Buss of Kent. Her parents died previously. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent, with the Rev. John Jerek officiating. William L Ferris Jr.
William L. Ferris Jr., 55, of Kent, died Sunday Nov. 22, 1998, after a short illness. Born April 16, 1943 in Erie, Pa., he was the son of William and Mary (Wertko). Ferris. He had attended Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent and Southeast schools. Mr. Ferris was the owner and operator of Du-Zee Products in Ravenna. A U.S. Amry veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the Sea Bees, he was a member of Kent Veterans of Foreign Wars, Kent American Legion and the 40 and 8 of the American Legion. He also was a member of the Canadian Club of Kent, the Italian American Club of Ravenna and a former member of Carpenters Local No. 639. Survivors include his wife, Sandy (Klatka); son, William (Kim) of Kent; one grandchild; sister, Debra (Ron) Kaluzne of Cuyahoga Falls; mother and stepfather, Mary and Stanley Peterson of Brimfield. His father, William Sr., died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel, where a VFW service will be held at 7:45 p.m. Wednesday followed by services at 8 p.m., with the Rev. Richard Ball
UNIONTOWN - Richard G. "Red" Ball, 70, died Wednesday Nov. 25, 1998, in Mercy Medical Center. Born April 8, 1928 in Colver, Pa., he was the son of Guirer and Mary (McHugh) Ball. He was an area resident since 1954. Mr. Ball retired in 1984 from Ford Motor Co., Cleveland Stamping Plant in Walton Hills after 30 years of service. He was member of the First Assembly of God of Louisville and was an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife Helen with whom he celebrated 51 years of marriage in June; son, Geoffrey (Cathy) Ball of Stow; daughters, Lydia Smithers of Campbell, Ca., and Eileen (Rick) Mehta of Anderson, SC.; three grandchildren; sisters, Gladys (James) Rainy of Colver, Pa., and Sally (John) Riggs of Pittsburgh Pa. Brothers, John and James Ball died previously. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Arnold Funeral Home in Hartville, where services will be held at noon Saturday with the Rev. Larry Thornsberry
Larry Thornsbery, 54, of Streetsboro died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at his home following a long illness. He had retired in August this year from the General Motors Assembly Plant in Lordstown where he was a relief man in the fabricating division. Born July 17, 1944 in Wayland, Ky., he was the son of the late Herbert and MIldred (Ford) Thornsbery. He had been a Streetsboro resident since 1975. Mr. Thornsbery had served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife, Sandra (Robertson); a son, Joshua of Streetsboro; a daughter, Andrea Habowski of Paris Township. He was the grandfather of three and the great grandfather of one. Friends may call Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Shorts Funeral Streetsboro Chapel where services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. with Dr. Mel Grubaugh officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Streetsboro.

Joshua Cole
NELSON - Joshua Cole, 9, died Wednesday, Nov. 25, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born Feb. 24, 1989 in Springfield, Ill. he was the son of Burton and Drema (Rose) Cole. He was a five year resident of Nelson Township. He was a student at Happy Day School in Ravenna. He was a special child who loved music, baseball and dump trucks. Most of all he loved spending time with family and listening to his sister, Melissa, play the flute. Survivors include paternal grandparents, Frank and Patricia (Burch) Cole of Greenville, Pa.; maternal grandfather, Larry (Shirley) Rose of Hillsboro, W.Va.; maternal grandmother, Wilma Ray (Ray) Wilfong of Ravenna; sister, Melissa Cole at home, and numerous aunts and uncles. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home, Garrettsville, where services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Daryl Muir officiating. Emilie Benyo
Emilie S. Benyo, 81, of Cleveland, died Friday Nov. 27, 1998, at Anna Maria Nursing Home in Aurora. Born May 7, 1917 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Andrew and Theresa (Branitsky) Benyo. Ms. Benyo was employed as a housekeeper. She was a member of St. Michael's Rosary Society. Survivors include nieces, Theresa Babrauckas, Susan Benyo, Barbara Benyo, Virginia Indovina, Mary Ann Vrabel, and Alice White; and nephews, Andrew Benyo, Frank Benyo, Daniel Lewis, and James Lewis. Her brothers, Andrew, Michael, Joseph, and Frank M. and sisters, Marie Normile and Irene Lewis all died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. Margaret Lindsay
Margaret E. Lindsay, 83, of Ravenna, died Sunday Nov. 29, 1998. Born May 3, 1915 in Fairmont, W. Va., she was the daughter of Elmer and Mary (Keller) Jenkins. Mrs. Lindsay was a homemaker and also had worked as a nurse in Chicago, Ill., She had been employed at Warner and Swayze of Cleveland and Oak Rubber of Ravenna. She was a member of the New Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Ravenna, where she was an usher and Sunday school teacher. She also was a volunteer with the Community Action Council and election board. Survivors include her son, Charles Hart of Cleveland; daughters, Shirley (Linton) Gwin of Mantua, Sandra Blanchard of Evanston Ill., Sharon (Robert) Miller of Ravenna and Margaret York of Sharon, Pa.; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Evelyn (Webster) Keyes of Cleveland, Christine Cranford and Juanita Cranford both of Morgantown W. Va. Her husband, Hunley, son Claude Hart Jr., sister, Rhoda Leek, and brother, Gilbert, died previously. Mildred Gibbs
SUFFIELD - Mildred Gibbs, 68, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at her home. Born Aug. 3, 1930 in Jacksboro, Tenn., she was the daughter of Luther and Grace (Shown) Gross. She had been a Portage County resident since 1979, living in Rootstown and Suffield. Mrs. Gibbs was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, James F.Sr., whom she married in 1962; sons, Jerry (Lois) Houk of Cleveland, Don (Wanda) Gibbs of Greenfield and Jim Gibbs Jr. (Brenda) of Suffield; daughter, Lisa (Scott) Strebler of Rootstown; 12 grandchildren; and brother, Gerald Gross of Hebron, Ind. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, with the Rev. James Walden officiating. Mary Zoller
MANTUA _Mary A. "Tink" Zoller, 80, who owned and operated Mantua Pharmacy with her husband, died Tuesday Dec. 1, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a long illness. Born April 25, 1918 in Bucyrus, she was the daughter of Ralph and Blanche (Quilter) Perott. Mrs. Zoller and her husband, Robert, owned and operated Mantua Pharmacy from 1955 until they retired in 1978. A friendly person, her love of people was evident as she personally waited on customers in the family business. After she retired, she remained active with her family, enjoying her children and grandchildren. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua and American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 193 of Mantua. Survivors include her son, Ralph W. "Bill" (Linda) of Mantua; daughters, Barbara (John Scaccio) Zoller of Rootstown, Bonnie (Jim) Collier of Mantua; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her husband, Robert, whom she married Oct. 31, 1942, died in 1994. A son, Robert II, died in 1970. Her brother, Ralph Perrott, and sister, Margaret Perrott, died previously. Ruth Bacon
Ruth "Irene" Bacon, 79, of Mahoning Court, Newton Falls, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998. Born June 26, 1919 in Warren Township, she was the daughter of Frank and Hazel (Foos) Herlinger. Shelived most of her life in Braceville before moving to Newton Falls in 1988. Mrs. Bacon was the head cook of LaBrae Middle School for 21 years. She was a member of the Braceville United Methodist Church. She also was a volunteer at the Church Mouse Thrift Shoppe in Newton Falls for 12 years. She enjoyed baking and decorating cakes, embroidering, reading, cooking, and antiques. Survivors include her nephews, Chas Ferguson of Ravenna, Frank Herlinger of Everett, Wash., Douglas Herlinger of Newton Falls; niece, Sally Abernathy of Ashtabula; one step-grandchild; and nine step-great-grandchildren. Her husband, Paul, whom she married March 22, 1948, step-daughter, Leone, sister, Doris, brother, Frank, and one step-grandaughter died previously. Calling hours will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Braceville United Methodist Church where services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Braceville cemetery. Ernest R. McCauley
NELSON - Ernest R. McCauley, 71, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron following a lengthy illness. Born Feb. 14, 1927 in Mill Creek, W.Va., he was the son of Bradford and Florence (Lambert) McCauley. He had been a machine operator at Harbison Walker in Windham for 35 years before retiring in 1985. An avid wrestling fan, Mr. McCauley also loved Cleveland Indians baseball. Survivors include his wife, Eloise (Dye) McCauley, whom he married Aug. 22, 1973; daughters, Thelma Jean Parnaby of West Farmington, Ohio, Nancy Lou Starcher, Barbara A. Conway, Diana L. Hannah, Roseanne M. Jenkins, all of Garrettsville, Jackie M. Carter of Windham, and Cathy K. Dye of Newton Falls; 21 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. His son, Victor; his brothers, James, Carroll, Olen and Arnold; and his sisters, Mary Loyd, Naomi Shifflet and Christina Tingler, died previously. Betty L. Fabiny
GARRETTSVILLE - Betty L. Fabiny, 73, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a long illness. Born Aug. 1, 1925 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Raymond and Marie (Friedrick) Krieger. Formerly of Hiram Rapids, she had lived in the Garrettsville-Nelson area for the past 20 years. Mrs. Fabiny had been employed at Hiram College in the food services department for several years. She enjoyed gardening and cooking for family and friends. Survivors include her husband, Andrew J.; son, Bruce J. of Burton; daughters, Diane (Joey) Long of Garrettsville, Beth Locash, Theresa (Joseph) Nanassy and Janet (Russ) Mateja, all of Kent; 20 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; mother, Marie Krieger of Cleveland; brother, Donald Krieger of Cleveland; and sister, Lois Short of Cleveland. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Green's Funeral Home at Pioneer Trail and S.R. 44 in Mantua, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, with Mr. Donald Krieger officiating. Bertha Mae Hogue, 69, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at Aurora Manor in Aurora after a long illness. Services will be announced by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.

Peter Sturrock
Peter E. Sturrock, 68, of Atlanta, Ga., died Thursday Dec. 3, 1998, at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. Born Dec. 6, 1929 in Miami, Fla., he was the son of David and Ruth (Earle) Sturrock. Dr. Sturrock was a chemistry professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology for 32 years. He received his BS and BA at the University of Florida, his MS at Stanford, and his Ph.D. at Ohio State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1956 and in the reserves until 1979 as a lieutenant colonel. Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth (Zapf); son, Kenneth A. of Atlanta; brothers, James P. of Saratoga, Calif., Thomas T. of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and sister, Ruth M. of Gainesville, Fla. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent, with the Rev. Elizabeth M. Hazelton officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Arthur Grimm
SUFFIELD TOWNSHIP - Arthur F. Grimm Sr., 68, died Friday Dec. 4, 1998, at home. Born in Northfield, Ohio, he had lived in Suffield Township for the past 32 years. Mr. Grimm worked for Yellow Freight until he retired in 1993. He was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. He also was a member of the Mogadore Christian Church, where he served as an elder. Survivors include his wife, Barbara; sons, Art Jr. of Suffield Township, John of Wooster; daughters, Linda "Chip" McNicol of Arizona, Narda Kay (John Goff) of Stow, Rose Crosier of Kent; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and nephew, Harry Grimm III of Medina. His daughter, Ruth, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Mogadore, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, with Dr. Eugene F. Higgins officiating.
