David Pitcovich Jr.
David J. Pitcovich Jr., 88, of Warren, died Saturday Feb. 27, 1999, at the Community Skilled Nursing Home in Warren, of natural causes.
Born Nov. 13, 1910 in Boswell, Pa., he was the son of David J. Pitcovich Sr. and Theresa Phillips. He was a resident of Warren for the past 11 years and previously lived in Newton Falls.
Mr. Pitcovich worked for Trumbull Manufacturing until he retired in 1963.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He also was a member of the St. Joseph's Church of Newton Falls and of the V.F.W. Post #3332 in Newton Falls where he was a former Canteen Manager.
He was a former Newton Falls City Councilman and helped with Meals on Wheels for several years. He also had been a coach for little league baseball. He enjoyed gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, and making hook rugs.
Survivors include his sons, Ronald A. of Warren, Paul A. of Oklahoma City, Okla., Gary L. of Clarksville, Tenn.; daughter, Ms. Kathy Sassaman of Uniontown, Ohio; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers, Rudolph Phillips and Frank Phillips both of Newton Falls; sisters, Mrs. Rose Reider, Miss. Sylvia Pitcovich, and Mrs. Ann Kovach all of Newton Falls. His wife, Mary (Ferko), whom he married July 26, 1940, died previously July 1, 1988. His brothers, John, George, Walter "Butch" Pitcovich, and sister, Mrs. Mary Chavlick, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Church in Newton Falls. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery.
Jordan Rose Valenti
Jordan Rose Valenti, 10, of Sandy Lake Road, Ravenna, died Saturday, Feb. 27, 1999, at Children's Medical Center of Akron from complications to congenital heart disease.
Born Dec. 29, 1988 in Akron, she was the daughter of Robert A. and Priscilla C. (Hodgkins) Valenti.
Jordan attended Happy Day School, the Child Development Center at Kent State University, the Story Book House in Ravenna and Rootstown Elementary School
She was a member of the Newman Center in Kent, Rootstown Elementary Schools Girl Scouts Troop No. 207, Rootstown Soccer and Champion Baseball League of Streetsboro.
Survivors include her parents, Robert and Priscilla of Ravenna; brothers, Christopher of Kent and Justin of Ravenna; sister, Shannon Valenti of Kent; and grandmother, Rose Valenti of Ravenna. Her grandparents, Phyllis and Jordan Hodgkins and Tony Valenti, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Bissler and Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Newman Center, with the Rev. John Jerek officiating.
Special arrangements have been made to support any children who wish to attend. Anyone wishing to bring mementos for Jordan is welcome to do so.

Virginia Pridemore
GARRETTSVILLE - Virginia Pridemore, 75, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 1999, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a long illness.
Born Sept. 7, 1923 in Kelso, Wash., she was the daughter of Dan and Mary (Klien) Hiebert. She had lived in Garrettsville since 1960.
She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Warren.
She enjoyed gardening, cooking, playing the piano and spending time with her family. She was well known as the woman who served breakfast to "40 strays" - her son's friends in 1963.
Survivors include her sons, Larry of Warren, Wayne and Alvin, both of Nelson, and Kenny of Windham; daughters, Linda Watson of Niles, Peg Kettler of Garrettsville and Katherine Propst of Warren; 22 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; brother, Dan of Washington; and sisters, Joyce Schaper, Marguerite Bennett and Charlotte Oaks, all of Washington. Her husband, Carl, whom she married in 1944, and sister, Harriett, died previously.

Carl Simms
ROOTSTOWN - Carl Simms, 75, died Tuesday March 2, 1999, at his home after a long illness of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
Born June 9, 1923 in Braxton County, W. Va., he was the son of William and Mary Jane (Jackson) Simms. He had been a Rootstown resident since 1962.
Mr. Simms worked as an oiler with Operating Engineers Local No.18 until he retired in 1985.
He was a World War II veteran of U.S. Air Corps.
Survivors include his wife, Doris (Straight), to whom he was married for 49 years; daughter, Susan (Bob) Stevens of Columbus; two grandchildren; and brother, Ralph of Doylestown. His brothers, Russell and Ray, and sisters, Susie, Melissa and Ida, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Richard Sumner officiating. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Park.

Margaret Proctor
Margaret Ann Proctor, 60, of Kent, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a long illness.
Born March 25, 1938 in Zanesville, she was the daughter of Cleo and Sara (Jackson) Newman. She had lived in Kent since 1970.
Mrs. Proctor was an antique dealer. She owned and operated Dolphin Antiques on Gougler Avenue in Kent.
Survivors include her husband, Charles E., to whom she was married 41 years; sons, Charles III of Cleveland, Eric of Kent, Jason of Edinburg and Jeremiah of Charlestown; daughters, Elizabeth Wilkinson of Texas, Jacqueline of Ravenna, Michelle Tompza of Poland and Julia Howard of Ravenna; 22 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and sister, Helen Newman of Seattle, Wash.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Vernon White officiating.
James Roush
Former Rootstown resident James E. Roush, 67, of Lake Placid, Fla., died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 1999, at the Veterans Hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Born Oct. 26, 1931 in Westerville, he had lived in Florida for the past 15 years.
Mr. Roush was a well-known real estate appraiser and owned his own construction company.
He served in the U.S. Air Force, as a jet mechanic, during the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion in Lake Placid, Fla.
Survivors include his wife, Pat, to whom he was married12 years; sons, Ken of Winston Salem, N.C. and John of Columbus; daughter, Amanda (Roush) Mosteller of Akron; and three grandchildren.

Charles Thompson
Charles M. "Chuck" Thompson, 88, of 7500 Dearborn Ave. Brooksville, Fla., died Dec. 9, 1998, at Oak Hill Hospital in Brooksville, Fla.
Born in 1911 in Pennsylvania, he lived in Ravenna from 1945 to 1975, when he retired from White Rubber Company. He and his wife Esther moved to Orwell, Ohio, then in 1978 they moved to Florida.
Survivors include his wife, Esther of Brooksville, whom he celebrated his 49th wedding anniversary with Sept. 16, 1998; daughters, Charlotte Love of Coshocton and Georgianne Day (Charles) of Ravenna; stepson, Warren H. Nelman, Jr. (Barbara) of Cuyahoga Falls; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Dec. 18, 1998, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Spring Hill, Fla. Cremation has taken place and burial was at Maple Grove Cemetery.
Raymond Boone
Raymond Boone, 85, formerly of Shalersville, died Friday, Feb. 26, 1999, in Chandler, Ariz.
Born Aug. 18, 1913 in Shalersville, he was a resident of Florence, Ariz.
Mr. Boone was a farmer before becoming a mechanic in the heavy equipment industry.
He was a member of the Elks, Arizona Rangers, and the Florence Gem and Mineral Club.
Survivors include his wife, Helen, at home; sons, David and Allen of Grafton, Harold of Valley City, and Michael of Cleveland; daughter Carol Ann Boone of Tucson; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; brother Norman of Warren; and sister Bernice Holiday of Ravenna. He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Turner, and one grandchild.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church, 225 E. Butte Ave., Florence, Ariz. Arrangements are being handled by the Simes Mortuaries Florence Chapel, 360 N. Park., Florence, Ariz.
Bruce Robeson
Bruce Robeson, 65, of Dunlap, Ga., died Thursday Feb. 25, 1999, at home after a long illness.
Born Feb. 8, 1934 in Akron, he was son of Ernest and Lillian Robeson. He had been a resident of Portage County for 22 years.
Mr. Robeson worked for the Portage County Jail, and also was a police officer at Kent State University.
He was a Korean War veteran of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors include his sons, Steven of Dunlap, Michael of Cleveland, Richard of Kent, Russell of Ravenna; daughter, Rebecca of Atlanta, Ga., Nicole of Ravenna; and numerous grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Chattanooga National Cemetery in Chattanooga, Tenn.
Martha Roddy
FREEDOM - Martha Roddy, 88, died Monday, March 1, 1999, at the Portage County Nursing Home in Shalersville.
Services will be announced by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.
Linda Kulka, 52
HIRAM - Linda L. Kulka, 52, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999 at Metro Health Care Center in Cleveland from injuries sustained in an automobile accident Tuesday in Hiram Township.
Born Feb. 6, 1947 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Simon F. and Dessie (Poteet) Tulley II. A former Twinsburg resident, she had lived in the Hiram area for 26 years. She was a graduate of Chamberlain High School in Twinsburg and had attended Kent State University.
Mrs. Kulka was a homemaker and an avid gardener.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua where she belonged to the church garden club. She also was the committee chairperson of the St. Joseph's Ox Roast Fair for many years, and was a Eucharistic Minister of the church.
She was a former Girl Scout leader for Troop No. 534 of Hiram and had been den mother of Cub Scout Pack No. 61 of Hiram.
Survivors include her husband Terrance "Terry" Kulka, whom she married Oct. 12, 1968; sons, Eric (Donna) of Stow, and Christopher, at home; daughters, Colleen (Marc) Khairallah of Newbury, and Halle at home; one grandchild; brothers, Simon F. Tulley III of Hiram, and Gregory Tulley of Macedonia.
Calling hours will be held from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where evening prayers will be said at 8:30 p.m. Friday. A prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, and services will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mantua, with the Rev. Thomas McCarthy officiating. Marion Kapper, 86
MOGADORE - Marion L. Kapper, 86, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, 1999.
Born in Tuscarawas Township, he had lived in the Mogadore area since 1942.
Mr. Kapper worked as a diesel mechanic for Akron Metro, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church and was an avid bowler and home gardener.
Survivors include his sons, Eugene Kapper, Larry (Jane) Kapper and Richard (Kathy) Kapper; daughters, Shirley (Gary) Ulm and Pat Hamilton; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Ray, Al and Cyril; and sisters, Ethel Carr and Catherine Henderhan. His wife, Mary in 1987; brothers, Lewis, LaVerne and Melvin; and sister, Lillian died previously.

Alfred Jenkins, 68
WINDHAM - Alfred L. Jenkins, 68, died Wednesday March 3, 1999, at home. He had Alzheimer's Disease.
Born June 6, 1930 in Glenville, W. Va., he was the son of Lee B. and Jannie (Ratcliff) Jenkins. He previously lived in Charlestown Township and had been a Windham resident for the past 34 years.
Mr. Jenkins was a press operator at Falls Steel Tube Manufacturing in Newton Falls for 32 years until he retired in 1990.
He was a member of the Windham Baptist Church. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, trapping and hunting.

Elaine R. Green, 58, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, March 3, 1999, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born Sept. 22, 1940 in Louisville, Ohio, she was the daughter of Earl and Elizabeth (Hill) Schott. She had lived in Ravenna since 1968.
Mrs. Green was a production worker. She retired from Colonial Rubber in Ravenna in 1986.
She was a member of the PPP Club.

Wayne Patrick, 79
HIRAM - Wayne E. Patrick, 79, died Wednesday March 3, 1999, at home after an extended illness.
Born Oct. 19, 1919, he was the son of Charles and Glennie (Eatinger) Patrick. He was a resident of Hiram since 1942.
Mr. Patrick worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for the Hiram Post Office for 25 years. He also was employed by Hiram Village as a police officer for several years and was a diesel generator operator at the Hiram Municipal Light Plant.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of The Hiram Christian Church. He was an avid fisherman.
Survivors include his wife Norma (Eby), whom he married on Dec. 24, 1941; daughter, Rebecca L. Stewart of Hiram; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Melvin Dixon; sisters, Eilien Seymour of Virginia, and Mabel Worsler of Albany, N.Y. His daughter, Felice Taylor died previously in 1986.

Darlene Tennant, 82
ATWATER - Darlene T. "Shorty" Tennant, 82, died Wednesday March 3, 1999.
Born Oct. 12, 1916 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of George and Abigail (Harmon) Shope.
Mrs. Tennant was a cook and a matron for the Portage County Sheriff's Department.
Survivors include her daughters, Norma L. Middleton and Judy (Eugene) Scott, both of Atwater; four grandchildren; and sisters, June (Ralph) Pol and Peanny Beans, both of Atwater. Her husband, Arles "Buss," died in 1986. Her brothers, Durward, Dwane and Don Shope, and sisters, Duretta and Daisy, died previously.

Bertha Harnar, 77
PARIS - Bertha Z. Harnar, 77, died Wednesday March 3, 1999, at home of cancer.
Born Nov. 19, 1921 in Cambridge, Ohio, she was the daughter of Andrew and Bertha (Nemecek) Zajic. She previously was a resident of Lordstown and Cambridge and lived in the vicinity since 1955.
Mrs. Harnar was a homemaker and also a clerk at Newton Falls Convenient. She enjoyed her family, traveling, sewing and crafts.
Survivors include her sons, Dennis E. and Charles A. both of Paris Township; daughters, Mrs. Dennis (Linda) Valot of Newton Falls, Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Fitch of Bristolville; five grandchildren; and brother, James of Corvallis, Pa.

Lonnie E. Duff
Rev. Lonnie E. Duff, 92, of Kent, died Thursday March 4, 1999, at home.
Born Jan. 8, 1907, he was the son of Frank and Linda (Gibson) Duff. He lived in Akron before moving to Kent 18 years ago.
Rev. Duff was a former pastor with the Brimfield Church of God and other area churches. He was a member of the Streetsboro Church of God. He was a press operator at the B.F. Goodrich Company of Akron for 42 years.
Survivors include his wife, Naomi B. (Wolfe); sons, Dennis and Gary both of Akron, Lonnie D. of Kent; daughter, Phyllis Witner of Florida; several grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His daughter, Judith, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Streetsboro Church of God, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. J.W. Adkins officiating. Burial will be in the Northlawn Cemetery in Cuyahoga Falls.
Stanley J. Pelc
Stanley J. Pelc, 80, of Akron, died Tuesday, March 2, 1999, at the Hospice Care Center.
Born Dec. 18, 1918 in New Castle, Pa., he was the son of George and Sophia Pelc.
Mr. Pelc was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He also was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, Stella, to whom he had been married for 53 years; children, Frank (Karen), Irene (Bill) Forshey, Patti (Michael) Parker; four grandchildren; sisters, Helen Cwynar and Mary Gierlach.
Services will be held at noon Saturday at St. Matthew Catholic Church. The family will receive friends after the service at the Clarence May Community Center, 2525 Wedgewood Drive, Akron.
