Timothy Peterson, 12
Timothy P. Peterson, 12, of Mantua, died Saturday, May 30, 1998 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident Saturday afternoon on Diagonal Road in Shalersville Township.
Born May 15, 1986 in Westminster, Calif., he was the son of Charles and Brenda (Broemsen) Peterson. He had lived in Mantua all his life.
Tim had just completed the fifth grade at Atwater Christian Academy.
He was a member of His Ministry Church in Aurora, where he was a junior usher, a member of the Gospel Team and the Nursing Home Ministry, and he sang with the Children's Church Choir. His love of singing was shown both at his church and at school.
He played left field and third base for the Shalersville Diamondbacks Baseball Team.
Survivors include his parents and his sister, Rebecca, all of Mantua; paternal grandparents Harold Jr. and Gloria Peterson of Aurora; maternal grandmother Cara Broemson of Mantua; maternal grandfather Edward Broemson Jr. of Emerald Isle, N.C.; great-grandfathers Harold Peterson Sr. of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Edward Broemson Sr. of Rio Hande, Texas; and great-grandmothers Ann Brott of Grandville, Mich., Polly Bramley of Mantua, and Lucy Broemson of Rio Hande, Texas.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at His Ministry in Aurora, where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Florence Udell officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Mantua. Green's Funeral Home in Mantua is handling arrangements.
Isabell Jeffreys, 75
Isabell R. Jeffreys, 75, formerly of Silver Oaks, Kent, died Sunday, May 31, 1998 at Portage County Nursing Home in Ravenna.
She was born July 7, 1922 in Kalamazoo, Mich., the daughter of Arthur R. and Gladys A. (McDowell) Ruggles.
Mrs. Jeffreys was an office worker for the veterans administration. She was also a member of the United Methodist Church of Kent.
Survivors include her brother, James Ruggles of Ravenna, and sister, Genevieve Iivari, of Kent. Her husband, A. Clark Jeffreys, died previously.
Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Standing Rock Cemetery, with the Rev. Kay Dunlap officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Arrangements were made by the Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent.

Alberta Reed, 90
Alberta Reed, 90, of Freedom Township, died Saturday, May 30, 1998 at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna.
Born August 11, 1907, in Derry, Penn., she was the daughter of Orion P. and Elizabeth (Lloyd) Miller. She had lived in Freedom since 1987.
Mrs. Reed was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons Thomas B. of Fortson, Ga., Robert E. of Moorpark, Calif., Harold of Sparks, Nev., and William of Wintersville, Ohio; and daughters Betty Dragich of Freedom Twp, Alice Giannamore of Steubenville, Regina Turner of Columbus, Mary Chafin of New Cumberland, W. Va., and Barbara Evans of Calif. Her husband, Thomas B., and her son, James, died previously.

Helen Huffman, 89
Helen Huffman, 89, died Saturday, May 30, 1998 at Castle Nursing Home in Millersburg, Ohio after a lengthy illness.
Born in Seville on April 14, 1909, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Weldy) Edell. A resident of the Hiram area since 1991, she had lived in Cleveland most of her life.
Mrs. Huffman was employed for many years as a dietitian at the Broadview Nursing Home in Broadview Heights.
She was an avid reader.
Survivors include her son, William (Stephana) Huffman of Hiram; daughter, Janice Graf, of Parma; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell, in 1980; daughter, Elda Hesser; and brothers, Ray and Roy Edell.
No calling hours will be held. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Brooklyn Heights Cemetery in Cleveland with the Rev. Michael LaRusa of New Life Chapel in Seven Hills officiating. Green's Funeral Home in Mantua is handling arrangements.
ALBERT JACKMAN, 82
Albert Jackman, 82, of Kent, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, at the Hospice of Visiting Nurse Service in Fairlawn after a battle with cancer.
Born Aug. 21, 1915 in Kent, he was son of John and Margaret Jackman. He had lived in Kent his entire life. He was a 1933 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent, where he was a member of the National Honor Society.
Mr. Jackman was co-owner and vice president of Mastercraft Machine Co. of Kent from 1953 until he retired in 1979. He previously worked at C.L. Gougler Machine Co. in Kent, where he was a master machinist and foreman from 1935 to 1948 and at Kent Mold & Manufacturing Co.
He was a founding member of the Kent Loyal Order of Moose. He enjoyed cooking, dining, dancing, golf, gardening and spending winters in Florida. He was an accomplished violinist.
Survivors include his daughter, Charita L. (Charles) Lynch of Kent; brothers, Ernest (Marilyn) of Rockville, Md., and Titus of Kent; and sister, Elsie (Sam) Radich of Newton Falls. His wife, Dorothy, died previously.
There will be no calling hours. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 600 S. Water St., Kent. Arrangements were made by Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel.

GAIL PEOPLES, 45
Gail Alice Peoples, 45, of South Lincoln Street, Kent, died Saturday, May 30, 1998 at Akron City Hospital.
Born March 12, 1953 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Albert and Alice (Dowdell) Peoples.
Miss Peoples was employed at Kent State University, where she worked as a library technician since 1969.
She was a member and past president of the Women's Social Club of Kent. She
Survivors include her mother, Alice of Ypsilanti, Mich.; brothers, Michael (Tearry) of Canton, Greg (Alice) of Ypsilanti, Mich. and A.J. of Kent; and step-mother, Marlene of Kent. Her father, Albert, and brothers, Raymond and Lawrence, died previously.

DENNIS SCHAEFER, 52
Dennis George Schaefer, 52, of Randolph, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, as the result of an industrial accident.
Born Sept. 10, 1945 in Canton, he was the son of George and Nora (Moledor) Schaefer. He had lived in Randolph most of his life.
Mr. Schaefer was a member of St. Joseph Church in Randolph and the Knights of Columbus.
He was a pipefitter at General Motors in Lordstown, where he had been employed for 29 years.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; sons, Michael of Cuyahoga Falls, and George of Randolph; daughter, Susan of Randolph, parents, George and Nora of Randolph; brother, Daniel (Lynn) of Rootstown; sisters, Rita (Don) Hohman of Randolph, Rose Ellen (Tom) Farnsworth of Hartville, and Mary Linda (Charles) Wells of Hartville.

E. LEE PIERCE, 68
E. Lee Pierce, 68, of Tulsa, Okla., a former Kent area resident, died Friday, May 29, 1998 in Tulsa after a long illness.
Born April 19, 1934 in Kent, he was the son of Royal R. and Mary Lucille (Corbett) Pierce. He graduated from Kent State High School in 1952 and Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. in 1956.
While he was a high school student, Mr. Pierce served as organist at the First Christian Church in Kent and substituted at many other churches in the Kent area.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo of Tulsa; son, Paul of Hartford, Conn.; daughter, Kathryn Castorina of Tulsa; two grandchildren; brother, Glen of Kent; and sister, Jane (Pierce) Baker of Gilbert, Ariz.
A memorial service was held today at the Evangelistic Temple in Tulsa, with the Rev. Dan Beller officiating.

Beulah Gibbs
Beulah I. Gibbs, 83, of Dover,, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998 at Hennis Care Centre following a brief illness.
Born Feb. 27, 1915 in Dundee, Ohio, she was the daughter of Charles and Pearl (Mumma) Burkholder.
Survivors include her son, Stan (Joyce) of Dover; daughters, Barb Swegheimer of Dover and Grace Luthy of Streetsboro; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brother, Charles (Joann) Burkholder of Canfield; and sisters, Grace Thompson of Ravenna and Gloria Loewen of Norman, Okla. Her husband, Kenneth H., died Jan. 15, 1991. A brother, Simon Burkholder, grandson, John Jay Luthy, and great-grandson, David S. Luthy, also died previously.

Patricia Stahre
Patricia A. (Leach) Stahre, 67, of North Fort Myers, Fla., the mother of Mrs. Ed (Linda) Waller of Kent, died Sunday, May 31, 1998 at her home.
Born Sept. 12, 1930, in Euclid, Mrs. Stahre was a former Chesterland resident.
In addition to Mrs. Waller, survivors include her husband, Robert E..; son, Dale (Patty) Stahre of Euclid; daughter, Mrs. Douglas (Kimberly) Riedel of Chesterland; nine grandchildren; and half-sister, Barbara Leach of Euclid;.

Louis Schneider
Louis M. Schneider, 60, of Savannah, Ga., husband of former Ravenna Township resident Carol (Ard) Schneider, died Sunday, May 31, 1998, in Savannah, Georgia after a brief illness.
Mr. Schneider was an insurance claim adjuster.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
In addition to his wife, survivors include his sons, Louis Jr. of Louisiana and Kyle of Savannah; and daughter, Julie of Savannah; brother, Dick of Florida; and sister, June of Florida.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held today in Savannah.

George Vair
CHARLESTOWN - George E. Vair, 87, who retired from the Charlestown Township road crew at the age of 85, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born May 16, 1911 in Charlestown, he was the son of Charles and Hattie (Bradfield) Vair. He was a life resident of Charlestown.
Mr. Vair retired in 1972 as a truck driver for Kaplan Trucking in Cleveland. After retiring, he worked 23 years for the Charlestown Township road crew, retiring in 1996.
He enjoyed camping and belonged to Good Sams Camping Club, a nationwide organization.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine, to whom he was married 63 years; daughter, Sandra (Roger) Platt of Charlestown; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Linda (Frank) McClintock of Garrettsville, and Ruby Pringle of Rootstown. A brother, Glenn, and sister, Elsie Busse, died previously.
There will be no calling hours or services. Cremation has taken place. Private burial will be in Charlestown Township Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

George Dragich
MANTUA - George N. Dragich, 71, died Tuesday, June 2, 1998, at his home.
Born Aug. 20, 1926 in Parksville, Pa., he was the son of George and Mildred (Vocovich) Dragich. He had lived in Mantua for 35 years.
Mr. Dragich retired in 1997 from the Ford Motor Co. in Walton Hills, where he was a welder repairmen.
He was an avid hunter, gardener and accordion player.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Rae (Schuman); sons, George of Mantua and Michael of Fort Myers, Fla.; daughter, Diane Cheryl (William) Gadomski of Streetsboro; one grandchild; brothers, Melvin of Northfield, Martin of Mantua and Peter and Alexander of South Carolina; sisters, Elizabeth Matela and Stella Sharp of Pittsburgh, Cathy Liss of Florida and Martha Ann Rains of Austintown. His brothers, Michael and Louis, died previously.

Worthy Cottrill
Worthy W. Cottrill Sr., 68, of Newton Falls, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.
Born June 21, 1929 in W. Va., he was the son of John and Lenora Cottrill.
Mr. Cottrill was a press operator at Harbison-Walker in Windham until he retired.
He was a member of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his sons, Worthy Jr. of Warren and Robert of Orwell; daughters, Kim Boyce of Windham, Sandy Cottrill of Warren, and Judy Pritt, Wretha Cox and Tracy Kelm, all of Newton Falls; 13 grandchildren; brother, Roy of Bridgeport, W.Va.; and a sister. His brother, Welch, died previously.

Elizabeth Peko
DEERFIELD - Elizabeth Peko, 83, died Saturday, May 30, 1998 at her home following a short illness.
Born February 16, 1915 in Germany, she was the daughter of G. and Anna (Rademacher) Goldner.
Mrs. Peko was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Paul's Church.
Survivors include her stepsons, Alexander of Concord, Douglas of Lyndhurst and Matyas Jr. of South Russell. Her first husband, Jose Tannenmayer, died in 1963 and her second husband, Matyas Peko Sr., died in 1982.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Dean's Funeral Home, 256 W. Ohio Ave., Sebring, with the Rev. John Graham officiating.

Warner Shears, 64
Warner B. Shears, 64, of Tallmadge, died Thursday, June 4, 1998.
Born April 1, 1934 in Tallmadge, he retired from RCA Rubber Company in 1990 after 37 years.
Mr. Shears was also a volunteer fireman in Tallmadge, a school bus driver and a pee-wee football coach.
He is preceded in death by his wife Minda Faye Shears.
Survivors include his daughter Theresa Kight of Suffield; sons, Douglas (Judy) Gatewood of Tallmadge, Richard of Tallmadge, Daniel (Sue) of Edinburg and Mike (Debbie) of Akron; sister, Carol Semler of Akron; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Former Portage County resident Lucille (Strader) Broemsen, 80, died Thursday, June 4, 1998 in Rio Hondo, Texas.
Born Sept. 11, 1917 in Springfield, she moved to Portage County in 1954 before retiring to Texas six years ago.
Mrs. Broemsen was a past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star in Mantua.
Survivors include her husband, Edward E. Broemsen Sr., whom she married Sept. 18, 1937; sons, Edward E. Jr. (Linda) of Emerald Island, N.C., Sidney (Peggy) of Flower Mound, Texas, Larry (Fae) of Ravenna; six grandsons; five granddaughters; six great-grandsons; and six great-granddaughters. Manson Brooks
Manson Charles Brooks, 77, of Southington, died Sunday, June 7, 1998 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
Born February 15, 1921 in West Andover, he was the son of Manson Charles and Elma Mae (Robison) Brooks. Formerly of Gustavus, he had lived in the area for most of his life.
Mr. Brooks was a railroader for Copperweld Steel from which he retired in 1978 after 38 years.
He was a graduate of Gustavus High School. He was a member of Southington United Methodist Church, American Legion Post No. 0699 of Leavittsburg, VFW Post 3332 of Newton Falls and the VFW Horseshoe League. He was a Cub Scout Master and Scout Leader for many years and enjoyed model trains, horseshoes, bowling and fishing. He was a member of the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Claudia Louise, whom he married May 6, 1944; sons, Larry M. of Champion, and David L. of Newton Falls; daughters, Mrs. George (Dianna "Lynn") Williams of Warren and Mrs. David (Susan E.) Oliver of Howland; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Mrs. Anthony (Leona) Haller of Las Vegas, Nev.

Vivian Favors Garl, 80, of East Summit Street, Kent, died Saturday, June 6, 1998 at her home.
Born May 12, 1918 in Kent, she was the daughter of Harry and Agnes (Drake) Favors.
Mrs. Garl was an interior decorator and ceramic artist with Custom Curtains in Cuyahoga Falls. She was a life member of Christ Episcopal Church of Kent and past member of the choir; past president of American Association of Retired Persons; founding member of Child Guidance Club of Kent; and an avid bridge player.
Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Fred (Suzanne) White, Paulette Kordinak and Mrs. Robert (Elizabeth) Goldthwaite, all of Kent; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Mary Sowinski of Port Charlotte, Fla., Her sisters, Louise Darrah and Vesta McElroy, died previously.

Nellie A. Gump, 94, formerly of Kentway, died Friday, June 5, 1998 at IHS of Atlanta at Shoreham in Atlanta, Ga.
Born April 22, 1904 in Glenig Center, Canada, she was the daughter of John Francis and Margaret (Fogarty) Meagher.
Mrs. Gump was a past president of Infant Jesus of Prague Guild; Catholic Daughters of America; Grandmothers Club of Portage County; Blue Star Mothers; and the Women's Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars 3383 in Akron, serving as past president.
Survivors include her sons, Gerald W. and John R., both of Kent; daughters, Bernadette A. Griggy of Topeka, Kansas, Loretta Fisher of Kent, Ida Morson of Kennesaw, Ga. and Karen Roach of Fort Worth, Texas; 33 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Della Nivens of Elyria. Her husband, Gaylord W., died in 1984. Marie A. Hromyak, 91, of Rootstown, died Saturday, June 6, 1998.
Born October 27, 1906 in Zelienople, Pa., she was the daughter of Michael and Bertha Zieg.
Mrs. Hromyak was a homemaker and a waitress.
Survivors include her sister, Nancy B. Rice of Rootstown and many nieces and nephews. Her husbands, Bill Collins, John Roberts and Michael Hromyak, died previously. Burial will be in Northlawn Cemetery in Akron.
