David Scott Lantzy
David Scott Lantzy, 47, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, Sept.. 8, 1999, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following complications of kidney disease.
Born July 5, 1952, in Johnstown, Pa., he was the son of Carl and L. Jean (Roberts) Lantzy.
A resident of the Kent-Ravenna area for the past four years, Mr. Lantzy worked for Pony Computers in Streetsboro as a computer technician. He had attended the First Assembly of God Church in Indiana, Pa.
Survivors include his mother, L. Jean of Indiana, Pa.; brother, Brent, of Portage, Pa.; and sister, Carol Gittings-Litvik of Indiana, Pa. His father, Carl, died in 1991.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Assembly of God Church in Indiana, Pa.
Arrangements are being handled by the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home in Ravenna.
Hazel M. Sands
ROOTSTOWN - Hazel M. (Smith) Sands, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at Akron City Hospital.
Born Nov. 11, 1920 in Corning, Ohio, she was the daughter of Emmett and Edna (Myres) Smith.
Mrs. Sands was devoted to her family.
Survivors include her husband, James, to whom she had been married 57 years; sons, Floyd (Cheryl) of Ravenna and Jim (Pearl) of Ravenna; daughters, Ruth (Kenny) Timms of Garrettsville, Bonnie (Butch) Roosa of Freedom, Janet (Richard) Sabo of Ravenna, Fay (Dale) Hunt of Lakeland, Fla., Clara (Perry) Jones of Anniston, Ala., Martha (Brownie) Lovejoy of Ravenna, Mary (Tony) Rossego of Twin Lakes and Flo (Rod) Stanley of McDonald, 38 grandchildren; 70 great-grandchildren; brothers, Raymond Smith of Florida, Phil Smith of Rootstown and Pete Smith of Coshocton. Her son, A.J.; daughter, Dolly Frietage; brothers, Tom, Bill, Homer, John and Bob Smith; sisters, Alice and Blanch; and one great-grandchild died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 tonight and from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Tallmadge Ballew officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
Claude Barnhart
MOGADORE - Claude W. Barnhart, 67, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999.
Born in Fullerton, Ky., he was the son of Les Barnhart and Bertha Brown. He lived in Kent most of his life and had lived in Mogadore for seven years.
Mr. Barnhart was a locksmith for A-Abra-Cadabra Lock Service until retiring in 1997.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Vera J., to whom he was married 47 years; son, Kenny (Nancy) of Massillon; one grandchild; brother, Paul R. (Barbara) of West Alexandria; and sister, June Snodgrass of Ravenna. His brothers, Elbert and Earl, and sisters, Florence Meenach, Nellie Ison and Lorrayne Crawford, died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Mogadore, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Karen Graham officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Mogadore, where military rites will be conducted by Mogadore Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8487.
Stanley Roseborough
SUFFIELD - Stanley Lowell Roseborough, 61, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999.
Born in Akron, he was the son of Kathryn and Alfred Roseborough. He had lived in Suffield for 14 years.
Mr. Roseborough retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. as a test driver after 35 years of service.
He enjoyed his retirement with his family. He loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Ernestine, to whom he was married 41 years; son, Kevin of Louisville; daughter, Sherry (Rob) Jewitt of Suffield; two grandchildren; and parents, Kathryn and Alfred Roseborough of Akron.
Calling hours will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home in Mogadore, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday.

Vernon G. Gochneaur
Vernon G. "Red" Gochneaur, 78, of Akron, died Sunday Sept. 12, 1999, after a short illness.
Mr. Gochneaur was co-founder and chief executive officer of Fashion Two Twenty Cosmetics, which was based in Aurora, until he retired in 1981.
An avid horseman, he was a founder and first president of the Buckeye Walking Horse Association. In 1971, he and his amateur mount, Mr. F.T.T. were recognized as "Horse of the Year" by the American Horse Show Association.
Survivors include his daughter, Sandra Grandee of Aurora; sons, Gregg of Dallas, Texas, Roger of Stow; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister, Janice Bradley of Brookfield; and brother, Lee of Painesville.

MANTUA - Roberta I. Johnston, 89, died Monday Sept. 13, 1999, at Maplewood Care Center in Streetsboro. Arrangements will be announced by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.
George Ball, 81
WINDHAM - George Ball, 81, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a brief illness.
Born June 29, 1918 in Newburg, W.Va., he was the son of George E. and Rose A. (Wolfe) Ball. He had been a Windham resident since 1952.
Mr. Ball was employed as a press operator at Ohio Corrugating Co. in Warren, retiring in 1977 after 25 years of service. Prior to that he was coal miner in West Virginia for 15 years. For the past 20 years he had a bicycle repair shop in Windham, which he operated as a hobby.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3332 in Newton Falls. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Mary V. (Larew); son, George W. of Windham; daughters, Betty J. Maguire of Merritt Island, Fla. and Mary (Rodney) Armentrout of Florence, Miss.; and five grandchildren. Seven brothers and three sisters died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday ay Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, where services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Will Stackhouse officiating. Burial will be in Windham Township Cemetery.
Hazel McCormick, 72
Former Ravenna resident Helen L. McCormick, 72, of Cincinnati, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, at University Hospital in Cincinnati.
Born Nov. 15, 1926 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Alfred Rossow and Florence Rossow-Viele. She had lived in Cincinnati since 1997.
Mrs. McCormick worked at the Ravenna Arsenal during World War II.
Survivors include her son, David Hostetler of Coshocton; two stepbrothers; daughter, Allinda Hostetler of Cincinnati; three stepdaughters; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Her husband, Clarence E., died in 1997. Her brother, Charles Rossow died previously.
There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chape, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
Harold J. Farley, 82
MANTUA - Harold J. Farley Sr., 82, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999 in North Canton.
Born Jan. 8, 1917 in Richlands, Va., he was the son of Noah and Myrtle (Perry) Farley. He had been a Mantua area resident for 25 years.
Mr. Farley retired in 1978 from Fisher Foods in Bedford Heights, where he was a selector for 10 years. He previously worked at Davis Paint Co. in Euclid for several years.
He enjoyed fishing and was an avid baseball fan.
Survivors include his son, Harold Jr. (Carolyn) of Norfolk, Va.; daughter, Sandra (Denver) Christian of Hiram; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers, Holland of Bishop, Va., and Alec Manes of Iaeger, W. Va; and sisters, Jack Peters of Tazewell, Va., Lorraine Simmons of Virginia Beach, Va., Clara Gano of New Milford, N.J., and Margaret, Monte and Betty, all of Frenchtown, N.J.

Luigi Goodwin, 48
Graveside services were held Wednesday forLuigi Edwin Goodwin, 48, of Cuyahoga Falls, who died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999.
Born in West Virginia, he was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Goodwin was employed as an automobile salesman.
Survivors include his sons, Luigi I. of Kent, and Mario of Akron; daughters, Laura Dale of Virginia, Angela of Norton, and Stephanie of Akron; two grandchildren; and sisters, Betty, Patti and Peggy.

William E. Miller, 69
William E. Miller, 69, of 376 Roselawn Drive, Lake Milton, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999 at the University Hospital in Cleveland.
Mr. Miller retired from LTV Steel, where he was a crane operator.
Survivors include his wife, Lois (Starcevich); sons, Randy and Ricky of Twinsburg and Barry of Bedford; daughter, Brenda Miller, also of Twinsburg; stepdaughter, Donna Bertels of St. Louis, Ms.; three grandchildre; two brothers and two sisters. A brother and two sisters died previously.

Alfred Ramage, 93
MANTUA - A memorial service for Alfred M. Ramage, 93, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hilltop Christian Church in Mantua. Visitors will be received at the church from noon until the service. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Mantua. Arrangements were made by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua.
Ralph Hart
Former Kent resident Ralph A. Hart, 84, of 3305 Dawson St., Sarasota, Fla., 34239, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, in Sarasota.
Mr. Hart had worked at the Ravenna Arsenal, retiring in the mid 70's. He moved to Florida upon his retirement.
When living in Kent, Mr. Hart was an active member of the United Church of Christ, the Kiwanis Club, serving as chairman of the Boys and Girls Committee, and Boy Scout Troop 253, serving as a troop committee man and district chairman. He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for his 49 years of volunteer service. He was also a 32nd degree Mason with the Rockton Lodge in Kent.
He is survived by his wife, Ethel (Young) Hart; son and daughter-in-law Roger and Mary Alice Hart of Birmingham, Ala.; daughter and son-in-law Nancy and Dave Grubb of Sarasota; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons.
Arrangements were handled by Sarasota Memorial Park.

Erwin Miller
Former Ravenna resident Erwin Eugene Miller, 85, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Wed., Sept. 15, 1999, at Bayside Health Care Center, Virginia Beach.
Born April 13, 1904, in Marion, Ind., he was the son of Lewis and Georgia Miller. He had formerly lived in Oberlin, Lorain and Ravenna.
Mr. Miller was an engineer, working at White Rubber in the 60's and B.F. Goodrich in the 50's.
He was a retired Army captain and a member of the Christian Science church.
He is survived by his sons, Larry of Virginia Beach, Va. and Richard "Chix" of Macon, Ga.; daughter Maryl Miller of Cambridge, Mass.; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. His wife, Susanna (Lockhart) Miller and sisters Frances Loesch and Ion Mayer died previously.
Visitation will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the Maple Grove Cemetery Chapel. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Wanda Thompson
NELSON - Wanda E. Thompson, 72, died Thursday Sept. 9, 1999, at the Portage County Nursing Home in Shalersville.
She was born Aug. 27, 1927, in Enid, Okla. Formerly of Oklahoma, she lived in the Nelson-Garrettsville area since 1968.
Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker. She loved playing cards, bingo and also enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include her husband, Donald F.; and two sisters of Oklahoma.
Calling hours will be held one hour prior to services at 7 p.m. Sunday at Green's Funeral Home in Mantua, with the Rev. Claire Williams officiating. A private burial will be held.
Marjorie Glenn
STREETSBORO - Marjorie C. Glenn, 91, died Thursday Sept. 16, 1999, at Longmeadow Care Center.
Born Feb. 13, 1908, in Philadelphia, Pa., she was the daughter of Robert and Marie (Damberger) Clyde. She lived in Streetsboro since 1972.
Mrs. Glenn was a secretary at J.C. Trucking Co. in Manhattan, N.Y.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Clemente of Queen County, N.Y.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert Clyde of Shalersville. Her husband, Robert, died in 1936.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Arrangements were made by Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel.
Karen McGinnis
Former Windham resident Karen S. McGinnis, 52, of Arthurdale, W. Va., died Sept. 14, 1999, after a long illness.
Born April 12, 1947, in Newbury, W. Va., she was the daughter of Clayton L. and Bernice (Burgoyne) McGinnis. She lived in Windham for 22 years before moving back to West Virginia with her family.
Ms. McGinnis was a homemaker.
Survivors include her sons, Michael McGinnis of Arthurdale, W. Va. and David McGinnis of Japan; daughter, Tracy of Arthurdale, W. Va.; parents, Clayton and Bernice of Arthurdale, W. Va.; and brother, Joey McGinnis of Kingwood, W. Va.

MABEL SPROTT
Mabel E. Sprott, 80, of Ravenna, died Thursday Sept. 16, 1999, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
Born June 5, 1919, in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Carl R. and Hazel L. (Notman) Vair.
Mrs. Sprott worked at the family business, Sprott's General Store of Ravenna and was an employee at the former Kertcher's Inc. of Ravenna.
She was a member of the First Church of God in Ravenna and the Ravenna chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed flowers, crafts, oil painting and traveling.
Survivors include her son, James R. "Jim" (Sandy) of Lisbon; and daughter, Mrs. Charles H. (Joyce) Suter of Ravenna. Her husband, J. Harold, to whom she was married for 58 years, died in 1998. Brothers, Wayne and Harold "Pat," and a grandson died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, with the Rev. Carl Holm and Rev. Phillip Miller officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery of Ravenna.
Thelma McEwen, 75
Former Portage County resident Thelma F. McEwen, 75, of Port Washington, Ohio, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999 at her foster daughter's home.
Born Aug. 8, 1924 in Mingo County, W. Va., she was the daughter of John L. and Georgia A. (Murphy) Evans. She formerly lived in Buckhorn Village, Newcomerstown and Portage County.
Mrs. McEwen was employed at the A&P grocery store in Kent as a clerk for many years. She was a homemaker all of her adult life.
She was a Baptist.
She enjoyed reading.
Survivors include her sons, Clarence Meade of Oak Harbor, Wash., Carl R. Meade of San Diego, Calif., and Michael Meade of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; stepsons, Berton (Butch), Fred, Bob and Russ McEwen, all of Ravenna; foster daughter, Betty L. (Emmett R.) Sloan of Port Washington; stepdaughter, Ruth Ann Head of Ravenna; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and brother, Robert Evans of West Virginia. Her husband, Berton S., died in 1998. Several brothers and sisters also died previously.
There will be no calling hours. Graveside services and burial will be held at Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna at a later date. Arrangements were made by Ourant Funeral Home in Newcomerstown, Ohio.

Roy Smith, 84
Roy J. Smith, Sr., 84, of 540 Sheldon St., Ravenna, died Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna after a long illness.
Born Sept. 17, 1915 in Gem, W.Va., he was the son of Okey and Bertha (Heater) Smith. Formerly of Westerville, he had lived in Ravenna since 1960.
Mr. Smith began his career in education in 1935 and served as principal at Brimfield Elementary School for 14 years until he retired in 1977. He also was the former assistant superintendent of the Southeast school district.
He was active in the Lions Club for 55 years, serving as king lion of the Ravenna Lions Club and past district governor of the 13th District and holding life membership. He was a member of Odd Fellows and Beebe Rebekah Lodge No. 405 in Ravenna, a life member of Ravenna Elks Lodge No. 1076 and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ravenna. He also was an associate member of the Society of the Blind and had served on the Ravenna City Board of Zoning Appeals.
He earned his master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh.
Survivors include his son Roy J. (Gwen) Jr. of Gadsden, Ala.; daughters, Roleta (Bill) Meredith of Westerville, Ohio, and Jalon (Dave) Burton of Peachtree City, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; and companion, Dorothy Jones of Ravenna. His wife, Thelma C., died in 1979.Five brothers and a sister died previously.
Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with Elks services at 6:30 p.m., at the Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Poremba, the Rev. Vernon White and the Rev. Dr. Russell Goldner officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.
