Evelyn M. Miller, 92, of Ravenna died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna. Born Nov. 23, 1907, in Akron, she was the daughter of Harry and Lena (Sauvain) Cook. Formerly of Cleveland and Mantua, she had lived in Ravenna since 1995. Mrs. Miller was the owner and operator of Evelyn's Beauty Salon in Cleveland. She attended Sunbeam School in Cleveland. Survivors include her son, Robert of Ravenna; daughter, Jeannette Bonner of Rehoboth Beach, Del.; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Jeannette Craigie of Cleveland. Her huband, Louis, died in 1973. Her sisters, Helen Cook and Eleanora Allison, died previously. Visitation will be held from 3 p.m. until services at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Meduri officiating. Burial will be private.

Hester Beal
Hester Beal, 86, of Kent, died Friday Jan. 14, 2000, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna. Born March 23, 1913 in Kent, she was the daughter of Frank H. and Lillian (Wilson) Parmelee. Mrs. Beal's time was devoted to her family. Survivors include her son, James R. (Julie A.) of Kent; and two grandchildren. Her husband, Gerald R., died in 1998. Two brothers and two sisters died previously. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent, with the Rev. Steven Lashbrook officiating. Bertha Elizabeth Newell, 75, of Hillsboro, the sister of two area residents, died Saturday Jan. 15, 2000, at the Highland District Hospital in Hillsboro. Born Oct. 25, 1924 in Bellaire, Ohio, she was the daughter of Samuel and Willa (Hillberry) French. She was a member of the Hillsboro First Baptist Church, and former member of the Liberty Baptist Church in Johnstown, American Legion Auxiliary in Johnstown and the Deerfield Fire Department Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband, James J., whom she married July 29, 1941 in Mannington, W.Va.; sons, Howard "Sonny" of North Benton, Harold (Debbie) of Columbus, and Ken (Dee) of Marengo; daughters, Iris (Clyde) Days of Groveport, Diana (Dewayne) Samples of Alexandria; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sisters, Birtie (Howard) Gump of Wayland and Nancy (Clarence) Imhoff of Brimfield. Her sister, June Batson, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Turner and Son Funeral Home, 602 N. Ruth E. Koons
Ruth E. Koons, 80, of Marlboro, died Saturday Jan. 15, 2000, at McCrea Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born Feb. 17, 1919 in Atwater, she was the daughter of Orva Leland and Ruby Lucille (Royer) Chapman. She was a lifetime resident of Marlboro. Mrs. Koons was a member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church. She was formerly employed in secretarial work, and worked at Taylorcraft during World War II. Survivors include her daughters, Karen Carroll of Marlboro, Suzi Koons of Alliance; step-daughters, Patricia Vargo of Alliance, Dorothy Collage of Las Vegas, Nev.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-granddaughter; brothers, Earl and Roy Chapman, both of Atwater. Her husband, Kenneth L. Sr., whom she married Oct. 10, 1942; son, James O. Sr., stepson, Kenneth L. Jr.; grandson, James O. Jr., and step-grandsons, Keith A., Kerry, and William Collage, died previously. There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Ken Price officiating. Dr. M. Thomas Jones, 63
Dr. M. Thomas Jones, 63, vice provost and dean for research and graduate studies at Kent State University, died of cancer Friday, Jan. 14, 2000 at his home in Hudson. Dr. Jones had served in his post at KSU since 1995. He came to KSU from the University of Houston, where he had been an administrator and faculty member for three years. He also had served on the faculty of the University of Missouri-St. Louis for 22 years. A St. Louis native, he earned his doctorate in physical chemistry from Washington University in St. Louis in 1961. He published more than 100 scholarly articles and other publications dealing with chemical physics, physical chemistry and synthetic metals. "Tom served Kent State University with a commitment to excellence and teamwork as vice provost and dean for research and graduate studies," said KSU President Carol Cartwright. "He was a good University citizen, strongly supporting our mission and values. Those of us who worked closely with him were inspired by his positive attitude and the courageous way he faced his battle with cancer." Walter Adams, interim vice provost and dean for research and graduate studies, said Dr. Jones "was an extremely well-informed, sensitive and thoughtful academic leader as well as an accomplished scientist. It was a pleasure to work with him, and I learned much from him." Survivors include his wife, Pat; son, Jonathan of St. Louis; daughter, Jennifer of Redwood City, Calif.; sister, Janice Green, of Springfield, Va.; and parents, Thomas and Margaret Jones of Mexico, Mo. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service at KSU will be scheduled.

John Whalen, 89
John Joseph Whalen, 89, of Silver Oaks Drive, Kent, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Kent Center in Kent. Born July 21, 1910 in Tuscarora, Pa., he was the son of James Patrick and Mary (Dougherty) Whalen. Mr. Whalen worked for the Davey Tree Expert Co. in Kent from 1946 until he retired in1975. He also worked as paymaster at the Ravenna Arsenal during World War II and worked for seven years as a teacher for the Blythe Township School System in Pennsylvania before moving to Ohio. He graduated from Villanova University in 1932 and Penn State University in 1933. He and his wife married and moved to Ohio in 1941. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Kent and Knights of Columbus Council No. 1411. Survivors include his wife, Frances (Carroll); son John J. (Charlotte) of Cincinnati; one grandchild; and sister, Mary Burns of Newton Falls. His son, James C., died in 1984. His sisters, Rose Neill and Anna Valentine, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, where Knights of Columbus services will be held at 6:45 p.m. Friday. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Church in Kent. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Hazel Petrey, 79
Hazel B. Petrey, 79, of Ravenna died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at her home. Born Jan. 27, 1920 in Hinton, W. Va., she was the daughter of Granville M. and Lula Caroline (Wickline) Wykle. Mrs. Petrey was a nursing assistant at the Hattie Larlham Foundation and the Portage County Nursing Home. She was a member of Peck Road Baptist Church. She enjoyed making crafts and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her sons, John E. Young of Arlington, Va., Fred D. Young and Clinton D. Young, both of Atwater, Arnold R. Young of Ravenna; daughters, Linda C. Adkins of Ravenna, Geneva C. Basel of Freedom, and Betty L. Adkins of Hinton, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert Petrey; son, Arthur Young; daughter, Shirley Ann Young; granddaughter, Lisa Ann Adkins; and several brothers and sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday with the Rev. Robert Workman and the Rev. Faye Stacy, 81
Faye Stacy, 81, of Akron, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at her daughter's home in Brimfield. Born in Denver, Ky., she was the daughter of Monroe and Bessie (Rice) Sublett. She moved to Akron in 1940 and lived there for 15 years until moving to Edinburg for 26 years. Upon her retirement she lived in Naples, Fla. for 14 years and moved back to Akron four years ago. Survivors include her son, Douglas of Akron; daughters, Wanda (Larry) Hamrick of Tallmadge and Glenda (Bill) Fritz of Brimfield; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Mattison Sublett of Akron, and Chester Sublett and James Sublett, both of Kentucky; and sister, Phyllis Vincent of Akron. Her husband, Perry; brother, Donald; sister, Ethel Legg; and infant sisters, Josephine and Iona, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hennessy-Bagnoli Funeral Home, 339 Southwest Ave., Tallmadge, where services will be held at noon Friday, with the Rev. Les Harmon officiating. Dr. Stanley Guise, 70
Dr. Stanley M. Guise, 70, who was an assistant professor of romance languages and French at Kent State University, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Clinton County Hospital in Frankfort, Ind. Born Dec. 26, 1929, in Stow, he lived much of his life in the Kent and Brimfield areas except for five years spent in Paris, while he was working on his doctorate. He had resided at Wesley Manor in Frankfort, Ind., since 1991. Dr. Guise was a graduate of Kent State University and Duke University in North Carolina, and earned his doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris. He was an instructor in German at Wooster College, instructor in French at Baldwin Wallace College in Ohio, and assistant professor of Romance languages and French at KSU. He retired in 1990 after working for nine years as a horticulturist for the Cleveland Metroparks System. Survivors include his sister, Emogene Wearstler of Brookston, ind., two nephews and a niece. Visitation will be held from noon until services at 1 p.m. Saturday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel. Burial will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Brimfield Memorial House Association.

Dorothy Blasse, 84
Ravenna native Dorothy M. Blasse, 84, of Westwood Ave., Alliance, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Alliance Community Hospital. Born Jan. 23, 1915 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Minnie (Donnalley) Abel. Formerly of Phoenix, Ariz., and St. George, Utah, she moved to Alliance in 1989. She was a graduate of Ravenna High School. Mrs. Blasse retired from Evenflo Products in Ravenna in 1970. She attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alliance. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary No. 166, Alliance Area Senior Citizens Center and the AARP Chapter No. 2630 in Alliance. Survivors include her son, Glenn E. Fish of Phoenix City, Ala.; daughters, Nona L. King of Alliance and Sandra S. Frayer of Lincoln, Ala.; nine grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. Her first husband, Harold G. Fish, died Oct. 27, 1966. Her second husband, Richard F. Blasse, died June 27, 1987. One grandson also died previously. Alberta Beathe, 80
Alberta M. Beathe, 80, of Cortland, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Warren after a brief illness. Born Nov. 3, 1919 in Landensburg, W.Va., she was the daughter of Gordon and Drucilla (King) Daniels. Mrs. Beathe was employed at the Windham Drug Store for 30 years as a clerk until she retired in 1980. She enjoyed bingo and playing cards with her friends. Survivors include her son, Robert, Jr. of Warren; daughters, Janet Haffner of Bristolville and Kay Smith of Cortland; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her husband, Robert, Sr., whom she married Dec. 23, 1939, died Jan. 27, 1978. Her brother, Gordon Daniels, and sister, Norma Perrine, died previously. Joseph Miller, 84
Joseph J. Miller, 84, a life-time resident of the Akron-Brimfield area, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000. Born in Chicago, he was the son of the late Nicholas and Elizabeth Miller. Mr. Miller was a pipefitter at Quaker Oats and also at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was an avid bowler and softball player, playing on the Quaker Oats and Goodyear leagues. Survivors include a daughter, Karen Goodyear of Brunswick; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and sister, Elizabeth (Kenneth) Huffman of Fort Myers, Fla. His wife, Mildred V., died in 1982; a son, Edward, brother Nick and sister, Catherine Davis, also died previously. Visitation will be held two hours prior to 1 p.m. services Thursday at the Hopkins Lawver Mogadore Funeral Home, 34 S. Cleveland Ave., with the Rev. G. Rod Taylor officiating. Vivian J. Swartout, 74, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000. Born Aug. 5, 1925, in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Vincent and Josephine (Malozzi) DeLano. Mrs. Swartout was a former employee of the Cherrys Steak House of Ravenna. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. She was an avid card player and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed an occasional day at the races or a trip to Las Vegas. Survivors include her sons, Michael (Lisa) of Ravenna and Ralph (Tamara) of Rootstown; daughter, Susan Taugner of Cleveland; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; mother, Josephine DeLano of Ravenna; brothers, Mickey DeLano of Texas and Vince (Linda) DeLano of Edinburg; and sisters, Angela (James) Nagella of Ravenna and Margaret (Edwin) Stewart of Oklahoma. Her husband, George died Jan. 16, 2000. Her daughter, Deborah Ann also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Hilda Knight, 90
Former Ravenna resident Hilda E. Knight, 90, of 3128 Niles, Cortland N.E., Bazetta Township, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at her home. Born Oct. 2, 1909 in Jewell, she was the daughter of Martin and Ella (Bensing) Brobst. Formerly of Naples, Fla., and Ravenna, she moved to Cortland in 1972. She was a 1927 graduate of Cortland High School. Mrs. Knight was a homemaker. She a member of Episcopal churches in Ravenna and Naples, Fla., and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Ravenna. She was a founding member of the Fine Arts Guild in Ravenna and active with Rainbow Girls in Ravenna. An accomplished seamstress, she enjoyed needlepoint and oil painting. Survivors include her husband, Richard "Dick," whom she married Aug. 4, 1972; son, William Morton of Naples, Fla.; daughter, Kay (Pete) Morton Davies of Vista, Calif.; stepsons, W. Rea Knight of Hiram and Richard C. Knight of Fort White, Fla.; stepdaughter, Lorraine McGuire of Columbus; 14 grandchildren; and sister, Zeola (Paul) Retterer of Dunedin, Fla. Her first husband, William Morton, whom she married Jan. 4, 1941, died in 1969. Eight brothers and eight sisters died previously. There will be no calling hours. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Cortland United Methodist Church. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Home in Cortland. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Cortland. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Northeast Ohio or to charity.

Fred Kline, 79
Fred C. Kline, 79, of Kent, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Jan. 28, 1920 in Kent, he was the son of Lester and Ethel (Potts) Kline. Mr. Kline had been a foreman with U.S. Concrete Pipe in Diamond. A World War II veteran, he served stateside with the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion and the Moose. Survivors include his sons, Fred E. of Landen, Ohio, and Charles of Newton Falls; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brother, Earl of Mexico; and sisters, Bertha Phillips of Brimfield, Irene Neading of Stow, Frances Stone of Chardon, Rita Condit of Granbury, Texas, Louise Williamson of Akron and Lucille Buchanan of Hudson. His wife, Leona, died in 1990. His brothers, Leonard and Glen; and sister, Marie, died previously. Elva D. Young, 88, of Ravenna Township, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Oct. 27, 1911, in Tennessee she was the daughter of Thomas and Etola (Huddleston) Dillon. She had been a Portage County resident since 1969. Mrs. Young retired as a blueprint supervisor at Addressagraph-Multigraph of Cleveland. She was a member of First Christian Church of Ravenna, a charter member of the Streetsboro Kiwanis Club, a member of the Federated Democratic Women's Club, and had served on the Portage County Democratic Central Committee. Survivors include her daughter, Glenda Enders of Ravenna Township; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; brother, Truman Dillon of Missouri; and sisters, Nell Pendergrass of Michigan, and Neva Ballenger of Akron. Her husband, Charles, died in 1975. Three sisters and two brothers died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, with the Rev. Jeffrey Frantz officiating. Former Ravenna resident Edna A. Harris, 88, of Warren, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Community Skilled Nursing Home in Warren. Born April 18, 1911 in Ft. Wayne, Ind., she was the daughter of Sam and Millie (Goliver) Gorham. Formerly of Ravenna, she had lived in Warren for the last six months. Mrs. Harris was a homemaker. She belonged to the Ravenna Moose Lodge No. 1234. Survivors include her son, Kenneth M. Robbins Sr. of Warren; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Her husband, Alvie Harris, two brothers and two sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and fro 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Private burial will take place.

Laura Andrews, 84
Services will be held Thursday for Laura (Cain) Andrews, 84, of Southington, formerly of Garrettsville, who died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren after several months of failing health. Born Jan. 11, 1916, in Hamilton, Ohio, she was the daughter of Henry and Della (Tickle) Cain. Mrs. Andrews was employed for 19 years at Polson Rubber in Garrettsville. She was an avid baker and enjoyed crafts and ballroom dancing. Survivors include her son, Howard (Rena) of Freedom; daughter, Grace (William) Long of Orlando, Fla.; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, James "Bud" Cain, John Cain, Clyde Cain, Robert Cain and Harold Cain, all of Freedom, Edgar "Pete" Cain of Ravenna, Lloyd Cain of Nelson and Don McCort of Arizona; and sister, Josie Underhill of Albuquerque, N.M. Her husband, Raymond "Andy" Andrews, whom she married Nov. 14, 1933, died Dec. 6, 1983. A brother, Raymond "Sonny" Cain, and sisters, Rose Dean and Mildred Vandrasec, also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 tonight and from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. The Rev. Fred Bell will officiate.
