Matthew Traina Matthew Traina, 48, of Lyntz Road, Lordstown, died Wednesday, April 5, 2000, of a heart attack at home. Born May 1, 1951 in Rahway, N.J., he was the son of Roy and Amelia (Guglielmo) Traina. He moved to Lordstown five years ago from Stroudsburg, Pa., where he had lived for 19 years. Mr. Traina was a was a self-employed mechanic and co-owned the Zip-Lube in Newton Falls. He was a member of the Naus Club in Warren. He liked cars, riding his motorcycle and playing pool. Survivors include his wife, Sonja L. (Dunlap), whom he married Aug. 7, 1999; sons, Roy J. of Rahway, N.J., and Matthew at home; stepsons, Lukas and Calub Slater, both at home; stepdaughters, Ashley Dunlap and Hannah Slater, both at home; mother, Amelia Traina of Rahway, N.J.; brother, Roy of Newton Falls; and sisters, Judy Traina of Rahway, N.J., Donna (Robert) Walker of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Sandy (Richard) Kurse of Ocean View, Del. His sister, Rosalie Viera, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Lordstown Cemetery.

AnnaJean Cooper AnnaJean Cooper, 67, of Mineral Ridge, died Tuesday, April 4, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital, Warren. Born Nov. 10, 1932 in Ravenna, she was the daughter of Howard and Alma (Parriot) Gibson. Mrs. Cooper was a homemaker. She was a member of Edinburg United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Jerry G. Cooper, whom she married March 8, 1950; son, Wayne of Wayland; daughters, Mrs. Connie A. Hartman of Lima and Mrs. Nedra Owens, Petersborough, N.H.; and one grandchild. Brothers Paul and Howard Gibson died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Lane Funeral Home, Mineral Ridge Chapel, 1350 N. Canfield-Niles Road. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Edinburg Cemetery. Samuel Milner Samuel B. Milner, 81, of Kent, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at Kent Quality Care. Born May 11, 1918, in Birmingham, England, he was the son of Samuel and Fannie (Jones) Milner. Mr. Milner was a millright at Chrysler until he retired. He was a World War II veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces. Survivors include his wife, Anne "Ivy" (Stewart); son, Colin (Sharon); daughters, Sandra (Richard) Adams and Gael (Howard) Silverblatt; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Cremation has taken place. Private services were held for the family. Memorials may be made to the Portage County Animal Protective League. Frank Dale Jr. ATWATER - Frank A. Dale Jr., 73, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at Aultman Hospital in Canton. Born July 1, 1926, in Flushing, he was the son of Frank A. and Minnie (Ward) Dale. He had lived in Atwater for 42 years. Mr. Dale had retired from Alliance Community Hospital, where he worked in the maintenance department for 17 years. He was a member of the Union Avenue Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife, Wilma (Steine), whom he married Dec. 20, 1947; sons, Albert A. of Springfield, Tenn., and Thomas G. of Alliance; daughter, Wilma Carpenter of Alliance; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Allen of Alliance and Ramona Price of Marlboro; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home, 1000 S. Union Ave., Alliance 44601, where services will follow at 5 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Velma Ross Velma R. Ross, 96, formerly of Scottsbluff, Neb., died Monday, April 10, 2000, at Akron General Medical Center in Akron. Born May 15, 1903, in Phillipsburg, Kansas, she was the daughter of Samuel and Rachel (Nichols) Hull. Mrs. Ross worked as a bookkeeper for L.B. Murphy Company for 18 years. She lived in Scottsbluff until June 1999 when she came to Stow. Survivors include her son, William (Rebecca) of Stow; two grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and special friends, Allen and Ruth Vance of Scottsbluff, Neb. Her husband, Bernard L., whom she married July 6, 1925, died in 1991. Four brothers and five sisters also died previously. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff, Neb. at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are being handled by Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent.

George Halstead MANTUA TOWNSHIP - George Richard Halstead, 45, died Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born May 18, 1954, in Ravenna, he was the son of George E. and Alice (Morton) Halstead. He had been a resident of Mantua Township since 1991. Mr. Halstead retired from the U.S. Army after 16 years of service. Survivors include sons, Nathan, of Yuma, Ariz., and Jeremy, of Dayton; daughters, Amanda, of Enterprise, Ala. and Meghan, of Dayton; and a grandson, Garrett L. Halstead Kelley. There will be no calling hours. Private graveside services will be held at Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna chapel.

Wilda Pratt Survivors of Wilda J. Pratt, 48, of Brooksville, Fla., who died Sunday, April 9, 2000, also include her brother, Harold Carpenter of Newton Falls. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Grandview Memorial Park Chapel in Ravenna, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Entombment will be in Grandview Memorial Park. Foster David Armstrong Foster David Armstrong, 64, of Oakwood Drive, Kent, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at his home. Mr. Armstrong was a registered architect and city planner. He was an emeritus professor of architecture and environmental design at Kent State University. He served from 1975 to 1981 as coordinator of the Northeast Four County Regional Planning and Development Agency. In 1981, he was the founding director of the Urban Design Center of Northeast Ohio. Mr. Armstrong also was cited for his exemplary leadership in projects dealing with revitalization efforts of Ohio City, Olmsted Falls, Kent, Ravenna, Canton, Akron, Youngstown and Newton Falls and in major reconstruction efforts in Cleveland through projects in the Flats, Playhouse Square, the Warehouse District and the Northcoast Harbor. Mr. Armstrong retired in July 1991 from KSU, where he had taught for 32 years. He was awarded the President's Medal on May 16, 1992 from KSU based on "his extraordinary and unique service to KSU." Survivors include his wife Judith (Rogers), whom he married June 24, 1961; daughters, Jenifer Armstrong of Coral Gables, Fla. and Cara Armstrong of Key West, Fla.; mother Eloise Armstrong of Sarasota, Fla.; sister Cheryl (Robert) Johnson of Avon Lake; two nieces and five nephews. His father Foster G. Armstrong died previously. A musical tribute by organist John Ferguson will take place at a later date to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Armstrong. Sheldon H. "Cappy" Shilliday Sheldon H. "Cappy" Shilliday, 82, of Ravenna, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at his home. Born May 1, 1917 in Edinburg, he was the son of Hugh and Ossie (Herbst) Shilliday. He lived in Edinburg until he moved to California in 1980, then moved to Ravenna in 1997. Mr. Shilliday drove a truck for 43 years and retired in 1980 from Union Cartage in Austintown. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 377. He formerly attended Edinburg United Church. Survivors include his wife, Martha (Latimer), to whom he was married 46 years; sons, Donald L. (Lois) of Palmyra, Thomas S. (Kim Emerson) of Albuquerque, N.M., Ronald S. "Wuzzy" (Kari Busch) of Fair Oaks, Calif., and Michael W. (Debra Jones) of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; daughters, Conni L. Williams of Colorado Springs, Colo., Rebecca S. (Richard) Brothers of Ravenna, and Elizabeth O. (John) Robson of Boise, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. His brother, Stanley, and sisters, Mildred Hearn, and Charlotte Olin, died previously. James E. Oberholtzer James E. Oberholtzer, 67, of Johnson Road, Kent, died Monday, April 17, 2000, at Akron General Medical Center. Born March 3, 1933, in Kent, he was the son of Gail K. and Ruby (White) Oberholtzer. He was a life resident of the Portage area. Mr. Oberholtzer retired as a conductor from Conrail Railroad after 40 years. Survivors include his wife, Clara (Wright), to whom he was married 48 years; sons, James E. (Gail) Jr. of Kent, Britt M. (Cathy) of Richmond, Va., Jon D. (Debbie) of Ravenna; daughters Lisa J. (Bret) Wilson of Atwater, Laurel L. (Al) Cummings of Ravenna; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers Paul of Mississippi, Mark of Texas, Gordon of Texas, Bill of Kent, and Jon of Ravenna; and sisters, Wanda Smith of Florida, Jeanette Lilly of Streetsboro and Sandy Miller of Michigan. Leonard J. Brown WINDHAM - Leonard J. Brown, 77, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a long illness. Born Aug. 21, 1922 in Punxsutawney, Pa., he was the son of Newton and Maude (Berkhouse) Brown. He had been a resident of Windham since 1952. Mr. Brown had retired in 1986 as a Thermo-Former operator at Evenflo Products Co. in Ravenna after 25 years of service. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army. He enjoyed watching and feeding birds and keeping birdhouses at his home. Survivors include his wife, Delores (Lewis), whom he married Dec. 24, 1949; sons, Bobby (Paula) of Ravenna and Wayne (Judy) of Windham; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Four brothers and two sisters died previously. There will be no calling hours. A private family graveside service will be held at Sandy Valley Cemetery in Reynoldsville, Pa. Arrangements were made by Green's Funeral Home in Mantua. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association.

Mary Ann McCulloch Mary Ann McCulloch, 91, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, April 12, 2000, at the home of her granddaughter, TerriAnn (John) Thompson. Born Sept. 14, 1908, in Star Junction, Pa., she was the daughter of Andrew and Anna (Svec) Matty. She formerly resided in West Newton, Pa. Mrs. McCulloch was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna and Holy Family Church in West Newton.. She was a member of the Confraternity of Christian Mothers. Survivors include her sons, David F. (Mary) of Freedom, Pa., William M. (Lorraine) of Monroeville, Pa. and James J. (Mary) of New Springfield, Ohio; daughter, Monica (Jerry) Stallsmith of Mantua; 14 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Her husband, William R.; son, Donald A.; brothers, John, Joseph, Adam, Stephen and Andrew Matty, and a sister, Anna Urda, all died previously. Savannah Davis Savannah Davis, 89, of Ravenna, died Saturday, April 15, 2000, at the Portage County Nursing Home in Shalersville. Born Aug. 5, 1910, in Georgia, she was the daughter of Alexander and Laura (Thorton) Simpson. She had lived in Ravenna for 25 years. Mrs. Davis was employed at Independent Towel Supply Co. in Cleveland until she retired. She was a member of New Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Ravenna. Survivors include her nephew, Watson Worlds, of Georgia; niece, Amber Bivins, of Ravenna, as well as other nieces and nephews. Her husband, Robert, died in 1983. Two brothers and eight sisters died previously. Calling hours will be held from noon until services at 1 p.m. Thursday at New Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Ravenna,with the Rev. B.J. Laurys L. Thurman GARRETTSVILLE - Laurys L. Thurman, 52, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after a short illness. Born July 19, 1947 in Gustavus Township, she was the daughter of Wilmer L. and Naomi (Sattzmann) Gibbs. Formerly of Middlefield, she had lived in Garrettsville for 23 years. Mrs. Thurman worked at Ohio Savings Bank in Cleveland as a teller for three years and recently worked in the loan department. She graduated from Kent State University in 1996, with a degree in business administration. She enjoyed sewing, needlework, crocheting, crafts and her cats. Survivors include her daughter, Tamara (Robert) Boring of Chardon. Her mother died previously and her father died in July, 1999. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Russell Funeral Service, 15670 W. High St., Middlefield, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with Carl D. Gibbs officiating. Cremation will take place and burial will be at a later date.

Alex Gelles Alex Gelles, 79, of Southington, died Sunday, April 16, 2000, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren after a long illness. Born July 27, 1920 in Newtown, Pa., he was the son of Michael and Mary (Popovnak) Gelles. Mr. Gelles was a coal miner in Pennsylvania for 25 years and worked for the city of Solon in the maintenance department for 17 years, until retiring in 1984. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic and the Pacific. He enjoyed camping, fishing, the outdoors, woodworking and building things for his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Helen (Regula), whom he married Nov. 27, 1945; son, Alan of Litchfield Township; daughter, Kathy Baxter of Hiram Township; four grandchildren; brothers, Edward and Paul of Pennsylvania; and sisters, Elizabeth Syplivy and Irene Hagerich of Pennsylvania. His brothers, George, Mike, Adam, Steve and John, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 tonight at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home, Garrettsville. Lawrence A. Dixon Lawrence A. Dixon, 58, of Lordstown, died of complications from diabetes Sunday, April 16, 2000 at his residence. Born Aug. 31, 1941, in Custer, Mich., he was the son of Frank L. and Mildred (Smith) Dixon. He had previously resided in Long Beach, Ca. Mr. Dixon was a manager at McDonald's Corp. in Long Beach. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Survivors include his father, of Lordstown; a brother, Frank L. Dixon, of Ferrysburg, Mich.; sisters, Mrs. Barbara (Carl) Johnston of Warren and Mrs. Diane (Darrell) Rose of Sparta, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held one hour prior to services at 2 p.m. Thursday at VanZantwick, Bartels and Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lakes, Mich. Burial will be in Nunica Cemetery in Nunica, Mich. Raymond D. Frantz, 94 Raymond D. Frantz, 94, of Newton Falls, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Imperial Skilled Care Center in Warren. Born March 4, 1906, in Tamaqua, Pa., he was the son of Aaron D. and Ida (Geiger) Frantz. He had lived in Newton Falls since 1941. Mr. Frantz was a steelworker with Copperweld Steel Co. until he retired in 1971. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of First Church of God in Newton Falls. He liked to fish, hunt, read and play solitaire. Survivors include his daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Dorothy) Young, Mrs. Arthur (JoAnn) Thomas and Mrs. Ray (Ida) McNemar, all of Newton Falls; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Alva Rordian of Philadelphia, Pa., Ruth Parfitt of Tamaqua, Pa., and Mrs. Charles (Jane) Kinsinger of Stafford, Va. His wife, Alethia (Goldbeck), died Dec. 27, 1970. A son, Joseph "Butch," grandson, Raymond McNemar, and two brothers died previously. Anna Fink, 92 STREETSBORO - Anna Fink, 92, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000, at Maple Wood Care Centre in Streetsboro. Born Dec. 10, 1907, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of George and Anna (Lisy) Bayer. She had lived in Mantua before moving to Streetsboro in 1988. Mrs. Fink was a secretary with New York Central Railroad in Cleveland. She was a member of the Czechoslovakia Society of America. Survivors include her son, Donald Sr. of Streetsboro; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Her husband, Anthony; son, Richard; and brother, George Bayer, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joan of Arc Church in Streetsboro, with the Rev. Arthur Cavallo, 71 Arthur W. Cavallo, 71, of North Benton, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Community Care Center in Alliance after a long illness. Born April 30, 1929, in Torino, Italy, he was the son of John and Medina (Ortalda) Cavallo. Mr. Cavallo retired from the Ford Motor Co. in Walton Hills after 35 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member and past commander of the Deerfield American Legion No. 713, past commander for the District American Legion, member and past president of the Deerfield Ruritan Club, member and past president of the Deerfield Civic Association, member and past treasurer of Leisure Lads and Lassies Club and chairman of Monday Night Bingo in Deerfield. He and his wife were crowned King Arthur and Queen Catherine at the Portage County Fair in 1995. Survivors include his wife, Catherine (Geiger), whom he married Sept. 8, 1972; sons, Charles and David, of Bridgeport, West Va., and Gregory, of Munroe Falls; stepsons, Timothy, of Colorado, and Gregory, John and Steven, all of Florida; stepdaughters, Shellie and Jessie Uncapher, both of Akron; 28 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ines Sandy, of Bridgeport. A daughter, Patricia Washington, died previously. Florence Bane, 86 ATWATER - Florence M. Bane, 86, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Community Care Center in Alliance. Born May 24, 1913, in Pine Grove, West Va., she was the daughter of Levi and Ruth (Stackpole) George. She lived in the area since 1971. Mrs. Bane was a homemaker. Survivors include a son, Robert (Penni) Bane, of Atwater; daughters, Mary (Charles) Russell, of Suffield, and Linda (Ralph) Dreher of Atwater; seven grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Campbell, of Macedon, N.Y. Her husband, Curtis, died in 1989; and an infant daughter, Christina Louise, died in 1951. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Cecil Harris officiating.
