Charles Mathey III, 40
Charles Eugene Mathey III, 40, of 911 Milton Blvd., Newton Falls, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at 4520 Prospect St. in Newton Falls. Born Feb. 20, 1960 in Warren, he was the son of Charles Eugene and Linda (Jewell) Mathey II. He had lived in Newton Falls for most of his life. Mr. Mathey was a truck driver with R & J Trucking in Boardman for 15 years. He attended Lake Milton Baptist Church. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking and spending time with his grandson. Survivors include his wife, Karen (Brown) Mathey III, whom he had married Dec. 15, 1979; son, Jason of Newton Falls; daughter, Jennifer, at home; one grandchild; parents, Charles II and Linda Mathey; grandmother, Frances Jewell of Newton Falls; brother, Ronald of Newton Falls; and sisters, Susan Mathey and Treva Cren, both of Newton Falls. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until services at 11 a.m.Tuesday at Borowski Funeral Home in Newton Falls, with the Rev. Stephen Spurlock officiating. Burial will be in Braceville Township Cemetery.

Raymond Bergoine, 59
AURORA - Raymond W. Bergoine, 59, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna after suffering with cancer. Born June 2, 1941, he was the son of Raymond and Violet Bergoine. He had been an Aurora resident since he was in ninth grade. Mr. Bergoine was a salesman with many different companies. Most recently, he sold novelty items. He enjoyed stock car racing, Indians baseball and Elvis. In addition to his mother, survivors include his son, John (Tari) of Aurora; daughters, Renee (Chris) Reiter of Cuyahoga Falls and Kim (Sean) Miller of Parkersburg, W. Va.; and five grandchildren. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Kindrich-McHugh-Steinbauer Funeral Home, 33375 Bainbridge Road, Solon, where services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Highland Drive Cemetery in Brecksville. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or The Gathering Place.

Kathryn M. Dean, 80
SHALERSVILLE - Kathryn Mae Dean, 80, died Monday, June 26, 2000 at her home. Born Jan 5. 1920 in Nutterfort W.Va., she was the daughter of William W. and Grace Eva (Wilson) Wetzel. She previously lived in Brimfield before moving to Shalersville. Mrs. Dean worked as a dry cleaner at various dry cleaning and laundry services. Survivors include her daughter, Sylvia Anderson of Streetsboro; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and brother, Hensley Wetzel of Sardis, W.Va. Her husband, Delphia, died in 1977. Two sisters died previously. Visitation will be held from 1:30 p.m. until services at 2:30 p.m.Thursday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. The Rev. Karen Sue Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Shalersville.

Stephen M. Lasko Jr., 67
Stephen M. Lasko, Jr., 67, of 4341 Hallock-Young Road, Newton Falls, died June 25, 2000 in Zephyrhills, Fla. after a long illness. Born Dec. 1, 1932 to Stephen Sr. and Madaline (Takas) Lasko, he lived in Newton Falls. He was a former Akron resident. Mr. Lasko was a tool and die maker at General Motors in Lordstown. He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls, past grand knight of Newton Falls Knights of Columbus Council No. 3350 and past grand knight of Knights of Columbus Northeast Council No. 3329 of Akron, Ohio. He enjoyed playing his trumpet and horseracing. Survivors include his wife Sandra J. (Septrick), whom he married in 1960; sons, Stephen of St. Charles, Mo., Joseph of New Weston, Ohio and Georgeof Lebanon, Ohio; daughters, Theresa Coyle of Wassilla, Alaska, Julia Ballas of Warren and Katherine of San Francisco, Calif.; nine grandchildren; brother, Paul of Akron; and sisters, Charlotte Origlio and Irene Crites, both of Akron, and Rosemary Gambachinni of Tallmadge. A brother, Michael, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Borowski Memorial Home in Newton Falls, where Knights of Columbus services will be held at 5:45 p.m. Thursday. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church in Newton Falls. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Antonine Sisters Adult Day Care Center, 2675 N. Lipkey Road, North Jackson, Ohio, 44451.

Harriet C. Maurer
Harriet C. Maurer, 72, of Ravenna, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at her home. Born July 7, 1927 in Niles, she was the daughter of Howard and Catherine McElhaney. She had lived in Ravenna since 1953. Mrs. Maurer was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Edgar, whom she married in 1953; sons, David, Brad and Richard, all of Ravenna; daughters, Patricia Groves of Ravenna and Darlene Harris of Kent; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, John and Bud McElhaney of Niles; and sister, Margaret Evinsky of Warren. Her sisters, Fern Busse and Amy Wrataric, died previously. There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Maple Grove Cemetery Chapel in Ravenna. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Elizabeth I. Ervin
STREETSBORO - Elizabeth I. Ervin, 73, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born May 10, 1927 in Shelby, N.C., she was the daughter of Charles and Mae (Blaton) Jackson. She had lived in Streetsboro since 1959. Mrs. Ervin was a factory worker at Bird Electronics in Solon until she retired. Survivors include her sons, George of Parma, James of West Virginia and Wayne of Florida; daughters, Thelma Abbott of Streetsboro and Rebecca Quercioli of Chardon; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Her husband, Thomas, and daughter, Betty, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today at Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. Dr. Mel Grubaugh officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Streetsboro.

Thaddeus S. Shaffron
Thaddeus S. Shaffron, 90, of 65 East Broad St., Newton Falls, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000 at St. Joseph Health Center after a short illness. Born March 24, 1910 in Chicopee Falls, Mass., he was the son of Stanley and Mary (Wujcik) Shaffron. He had lived in Newton Falls for 65 years. Mr. Shaffron had been a night watchman at Nordlie of Newton Falls. Survivors include his wife, Isabel (Vaughn), whom he married Aug. 17, 1938; a daughter, Marie Ostrek of Newton Falls; one grandchild; one great-grandchild; and sister, Nellie Slys of Cleveland. His brothers, Matthew and Stanley, and sisters, Helen Frenchie and Bertha Shaffron, all died previously. There will be no calling hours or services. Cremation will take place. Arrangements were made by Borowski Memorial Funeral Home in Newton Falls.

James Russ, 71
SHALERSVILLE - James P. Russ, 71, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born June 7, 1921, in Akron, he was the son of Steve and Mary (Marta) Russ. He had lived in Charlestown Township before moving to Shalersville in 1948. Mr. Russ was a member of the Civil Service for 23 years, working as a troubleshooter at the Ravenna Army Ammunition Plant. He was previously employed as a printer for Robinson Memorial Hospital. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Air Corps. He was a member of the Garrettsville Masonic Lodge & AM No. 246 and the Mantua OES No. 32. Survivors include daughter, LeAnn Martindale of Shalersville; and one grandson. His wife, Eleanor, died in 1989. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with Masonic Services at 7:45 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Everett Schleef officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

Martha Schmucker, 73
Martha Schmucker, 73, of Mesopotamia Township, died of cancer Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Trumbull Forum Health in Warren. Born Aug. 27, 1926, in Troy Township, she was the daughter of Joe and Susan Schmucker and was a lifelong area resident. Ms. Schmucker was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and crocheting. She was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Survivors include son, Robert (Emma Kuhns) of Warren; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sisters, Mary Hershberger of LaGrange, Ind., and Emma Patterson and Elma Kempf, both of Middlefield. Brothers, Ervin and Joe, sister, Elizabeth Perks, and two grandchildren, died previously. Calling hours will be held at the residence anytime until funeral services at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Russell Golden Rule Funeral Service, 5195 Kinsman Road, Middlefield, with Bishop Albert Mast officiating. Burial will be in Wilcox Road Cemetery in Mesopotamia Township.

BRIMFIELD - Services will be held Tuesday for Frank R. Booth, 72, who died Thursday, June 15, 2000 at his home. Born April 18, 1928, in East Rainell, W.Va., he was the son of Earnest E. and Madeline (McIntire) Booth. Calling hours will be held from 5 to 8 tonight at the Eckard-Baldwin Funeral Home, 760 E. Market St. in Akron and from noon until 1 p.m. services Tuesday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 106 Howe Road in Tallmadge, with the Elder Paul Hardy officiating. Entombment will be in Hillside Mausoleum in Akron, where the Firestone Post 3383 will conduct military services.
