Norman E. Proehl
Norman E. Proehl, 88, of Ravenna, died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna following a period of declining health. Born July 14, 1912, in Ravenna, he was the son of Earl and Nina (Unger) Proehl. A life resident of Ravenna, he was a 1931 Ravenna High School graduate. He attended Ohio State University Mr. Proehl and his father were home builders in the Ravenna area. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Ravenna and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Proehl also was a collector and restorer of antique cars. Survivors include his daughter, Linda (Gene) Vasquez of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His wife, Vida (Ernst), whom he married in 1938, died in 1991. Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, with the Rev. Dr. Russell Goldner officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna.

Phyllis Mae Nelson
SHALERSVILLE - Phyllis Mae Nelson, 72, of Shalersville died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Feb. 17, 1928, in Shalersville, she was the daughter of the late Elmer G. and Lucile (Moreland) Hill. She lived in New Mexico for two years and Camp, Ark., for seven years before moving back to Shalersville in July. She was a retired special education teacher in Mantua, Charleston, and Shalersville schools and Raush Intermediate School in Ravenna. She sang with the Ravenna Community Choir and belonged to the State of Ohio Teachers' Association. Survivors include her husband, Wyatt O.; foster son, Russell Hamric of Pennsylvania; foster daughter, Barbara Hamric of Ravenna; and brother John Hill of Cuyahoga Falls. Her brother, Calvin Hill, and foster son, Dennis Schaffer, preceded her in death. Calling hours will be held two hours prior to services Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel.

Clifton O. Easter
EDINBURG - Clifton O. Easter, 59, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Sept. 10, 1940, in Whetstone, Ky., he was a son of Hugh O. and Fannie (Booher) Easter. Formerly of Rootstown, he had lived in Edinburg since 1974. Mr. Easter was a millwright at American Steel in Alliance. He was a member of Charity Masonic Lodge No. 530 in Deerfield, a 32nd Degree Mason of the Valley of Canton and a member of Tadmor Temple Shriners. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Survivors include his wife, Karen (Starkey), whom he married in 1962; sons, Jack of Edinburg and Mike of South Carolina; two grandchildren; and brother, Huell (Karen) of Mentor. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with a Masonic Service at 7:30 p.m. and funeral services to follow with Chaplain William Bebb officiating. Beatrice Lucille Kuhar
Beatrice Lucille Kuhar, 88, of Glad Boulevard, Kent, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Jan. 28, 1912, in Kent, she was the daughter of Marco and Mary (Gesua) Argante. Mrs. Kuhar was a member of St. Patrick Church in Kent and attended the New Covenant Fellowship Church in Palm Bay, Fla. Survivors include her son, John (Rita) of Kent; daughter, Mary Ann (Sam) Allender of Palm Bay, Fla.; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, Pat Argante, of Riverside, Calif. and sister, Edith Martino, of Kent. Her husband, John A., died in 1947. Her grandson, Vincent Allender, brothers, Don Arganti and Nick Argante and sister, Vera Imperial, also died previously. James A. McManus
STREETSBORO - James A. McManus, 63, died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born July 26, 1937 in Uniontown, Pa., he was the son of Arthur and Dorothy (Trimbath) McManus. He lived in Streetsboro and Florida. Mr. McManus was a remelt operator for Land-O-Lakes in Kent before his retirement. He was a member of Streetsboro United Methodist Church, Ravenna Moose Lodge No. 1234, Streetsboro American Legion and Streetsboro Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a U.S. Army veteran. Survivors include his wife, Lillian (Buttry), to whom he was married 34 years; daughters, Judy (Jack) Evans of Streetsboro and Sherry (George) Tackla of Parma; two grandchildren; brother, Thomas of Uniontown, Ohio; and sister, Ruthie Palermo of Uniontown, Pa. There will be no calling hours. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Streetsboro United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Karen Graham officiating. Helen Bailey Bumbaugh
Services will be held Aug. 12 for Helen Bailey Bumbaugh, 83, of Euclid, who died Friday, July 28,2000, at Valley View Nursing Home in Akron. Survivors include her son, John (Betsy) Bailey of Atlanta, Ga.; daughter, Nancy Jackson (Ansel) Woldt of Kent; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and former husband, Glenn of Sarasota, Fla. Golden Ray Shaffer
Golden Ray Shaffer, 82, of Baughman Towers, Philippi, W.Va., the father of three Ravenna residents, died Wednesday, July 19, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va. Born June 29, 1918, in St. George, W. Va., he was the son of Willie and Harriet (Johnson) Shaffer. Mr. Shaffer was a welder for the Terex Division of General Motors in Hudson until he retired. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his son, Ralph (Glenda) of Portsmouth, Ohio; daughters, Juanita (Dennis) Cetrone of Akron, and Betty (Joseph) Rhinehart, Janet (Ron) Rhinehart and Patty (Dan) Hazelett, all of Ravenna; six grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and brother, Edison of Warren. Services were held in West Virginia.

Foster Armstrong
A memorial service for Foster Armstrong, 64, who died at his Kent home on April 16, 2000, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Church of the Covenant, 11205 Euclid Ave., Cleveland.

Garnett E. Tennant
Garnett E. Tennant, 84, of Braceville, died of respiratory failure Friday, August 4, 2000, at Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren. Born Feb. 18, 1916, in Alma, W. Va., she was the daughter of Austin and Ida (Tennant) Gaston. She had lived in Weirton, W. Va. before moving to Braceville in 1948. Mrs. Tennant was a homemaker. She was a member of the Braceville United Methodist Church and enjoyed flower arranging, gardening and playing cards. Survivors include her husband, Francis W. Tennant, Sr., whom she married Aug. 13, 1948; sons, Stanley Tustin of Alma, W. Va. and Francis (Butch) Tennant Jr. of Braceville; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Her brother, Randall Gaston, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at James Funeral Home in Newton Falls, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Braceville Cemetery.

Kenneth "Dutch" Reiss
Former Rootstown resident Kenneth "Dutch" Reiss, 75, died of colon cancer Sunday, July 2, 2000, at his home in Hemet, Ca. He was born in Roostown and was reared in the New Milford area. He moved to California in 1954. Mr. Reiss retired from Rohr Industries in 1986. Since then, he and his wife have traveled around the United States and Canada in their recreational vehicle. He served two years in the U.S. Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Elverda "Evie," to whom he was married for 51 years; sons, Randy of Paulden, Ariz. and Terry of Alpine, Calif.; daughter, Judith Baer of Torrance, Calif.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Dorothy Leetch of Pompano Beach, Fla. Some of his ashes will be scattered in Riverside National Cemetery and the rest will be scattered in the mountains. Memorials may be made to the City of Hope in Duarte, Calif.

Patricia Ann Killian
Patricia Ann Killian, 65, of Aurora, died Tuesday, July 18, 2000, after an extended illness. Born April 26, 1935, in Canton, she was the daughter of Clarence D. and Trecy M. (Marteney) Thompson. Mrs. Killian was a former employee of Diebold Inc. and Hoover Co., and for 24 years she had been an Avon representative. She was a member of the Daughters of America. Survivors include her husband, James, whom she married Sept. 20, 1959; son, Gregory Scott (Sherrie Killian) of Twinsburg; two grandchildren; and stepsister, Betty Blanchard of North Ft. Myers, Fla. Her stepbrother, Donald Hole, died previously. Services were held July 22 in Canton. The Reed Funeral Home in Canton made arrangements. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery in Minerva. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Diabetics Foundation.

Elmer Jagow
A memorial service will be scheduled and announced to take place at Hiram Christian Church for Elmer Jagow, the retired president and president emeritus of Hiram College, who died Monday, August 7, 2000, at Heather Hill Hospital, Health & Care Center in Chardon. Dr. Jagow, who was 78, died following a brief illness. The president of Hiram College from 1966 until 1985, he was the dean of Ohio College presidents when he retired and his administration led a number of initiatives that continue to benefit the college today. The administration building known as Hinsdale Hall and the art and music center known as Frohring Hall and the Kennedy Student Center were built during his presidency. The athletic complex, Bonney Castle and Pendleton House were renovated. The biological field station was established. Dr. Jagow was instrumental in the creation of the Weekend College, a then pioneering program since imitated by many colleges, which enables those in the world of work to return to college on weekends to complete their college education. He also oversaw the establishment of Hiram College's affiliation with John Cabot University in Rome, Italy. The Freshman Seminar, the Freshman Institute and a number of interdisciplinary courses were introduced during his presidency also. Born April 22, 1922, in West Bend, Wis., he was the son of Bernard and Florence (Kurth) Jagow. He held a master's degree in business administration from Northwestern University and was serving as vice president for finance and as treasurer for Knox College when he was tapped to lead Hiram. He held a bachelor's degree from Concordia University. An outgoing and articulate leader, Dr. Jagow maintained strong relations between the college and the Hiram community and played an active role in the wider community as well. In Portage County, he served as a trustee of Robinson Memorial Hospital from 1981 to 1993, a period of tremendous growth for the hospital. He also served as a Kent community director of Huntington National Bank. In Geauga County, he had served as a director of Heather Hill, Inc. Dr. Jagow also had been a director of Acceleration Corp. of Columbus, of the Cleveland Machine Controls, Inc. of The Common Fund of New York. At John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, he had served as a honorary trustee since 1996. He held numerous honorary degrees including doctorates of letters (LLD) from Ohio University, John Cabot University and the Christian Theology Seminary. In his spare time, Dr. Jagow was an avid golfer and bowler. He loved to travel in the United States and abroad and in recent years had enjoyed river cruises. His first wife, Ellen (Knief) Jagow, who preceded him in death after his retirement from Hiram, was a well regarded artist whose paintings and sculptures are exhibited in homes, galleries and museums. Following her death, in 1995, Dr. Jagow married Joan (Greensboro) Jagow of Hiram who survives him. He is also survived by daughters, Kathryn Jagow Mohrman of Colorado Springs, Col. and Allyson Jagow Weir of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Two grandchildren, David and Ellen Weir, also survive. Ada-Ann Webb
Ada-Ann Webb, 85, of Ravenna died unexpectedly Saturday, August 5, 2000, at her home. She was the widow of Dr. Walter B. Webb, a physician who during his career delivered many of the babies who became the citizens of Ravenna and Portage County. She came with her husband to Ravenna in 1946. In addition to raising five children and supporting her husband in his large medical practice, she contributed civically to the community. Born Feb. 10, 1915, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of James Griffin and Jesse Pearl (Spray) Crafts. Mrs. Webb was raised in Mantua and graduated from Mantua Village High School where she was an accomplished basketball player and valedictorian of her class. In 1936, she graduated from Hiram College as did her husband ,and both remained ardent supporters of the college. After teaching English in junior high school in Painesville schools and accompanying her husband in military service, she and her husband moved to Ravenna and eventually established their residence in a beautifully restored 19th century home north of the city where they raised their five children. Though family duties kept her busy, Mrs. Webb found time to volunteer at Robinson Memorial Hospital and she served on the Reed Memorial Library Board for many years. She was active in the Old Northwest Chapter of the D.A.R. and a member of several other clubs over the years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Ravenna. Possessed of an insatiable curiosity and enthusiasm for life, she and her husband traveled worldwide. Her sense of adventure was evident when she recalled at the time of her husband's death 10 years ago that the two of them had camped on their honeymoon in the late 1930s on the Gaspe Peninsula in Canada. She was a voracious reader and maintained an interest in education. She also was interested in responsible land use and, as Ravenna expanded north toward her home, had recently expressed concern about how land along S.R. 44 would be developed. Mrs. Webb is survived by sons, Richard (Susan) of Kinsman, Jeremiah (Cheryl) of Wilmington, Norman (Connie) of Hiram; daughters, Dr. Martha (Patrick) McGovern of Statesboro, Ga. and Jessica (Leslie) Bennett of Gambrills, Md.; nine grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. In addition to her husband of 51 years, her brothers, Dr. James S. and Claude H. Crafts and a sister, Dr. Virginia R. Crafts, died previously. Fred E. Mathis Sr.
Former Streetsboro resident, Fred E. Mathis Sr., 52, of Ravenna Township died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Akron City Hospital. Born April 14, 1948, in Logan County, W. Va., he was the son of Clifford and Forence (Williams) Mathis. He was a machine operator at Mantua Manufacturing. He moved to Ravenna Township from Streetsboro six years ago. Survivors include his wife of 31 years, Luella (Hamman); sons, Fred (Heidi) Jr. and Steve (Paula), both of Streetsboro; daughter, Tina (George) Ballard of Ravenna; eight grandchildren; his father, Clifford Mathis of Wayne County, W. Elmus W. Gann
STREETSBORO - Elmus W. Gann, 66, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Jan 31, 1934, in McMinneville, Tenn., he was a son of Howard and Opal (Hendrixson) Gann. He lived in Akron before moving to Streetsboro one year ago. Mr. Gann was a retired welder from the Chrysler Corp. in Twinsburg. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Jeanette (Segars) Woodford-Gann; stepson, Michael Woodford of Seattle; stepdaughters, Michele Culbertson of Green, and Becky Smith of Akron; and five grandchildren. George E. "Joe" Pasko
George E. "Joe" Pasko, 66, of Mantua died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at his home after a brief illness. Born Sept. 18, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was a son of Nicholas and Mary (Kovacs) Pasko. He lived in Mantua for 31 years. He was employed as a supervisor at Ethel-Nymold in Mantua for 32 years and then at Enjex in Twinsburg for five years. He was a past member of the Mantua Knights of Columbus and he was active for many years in the Mantua Boy Scout Troop 575. He enjoyed bowling and flying kites and spending time with his family. He was a U.S. Army Korean serving in Korea. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jean (Krepley) Pasko; five children including sons, John (Michelle) of Mooresville, N.C.; and James (Shelly) of Mantua; a daughter, Linda (Mark) McGinnis of Shalersville; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Steve and William Pasko of Pittsburgh; seven sisters, Ann Toth of Philadelphia and Mary Gaydas, Helen Britton, Julie Pasko, Jean Olson, Pauline Phillips and Marge Ireland, all of Pittsburgh. His parents and a brother, Michael, preceded him in death. Calling hours are 6-9 p.m. today at the Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. Services wll be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Garrettsville with Rev. Richard Pentelo officiating. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Fred J. Daum
Fred J. Daum, 51, of Bartlett, Texas, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, as a result of injuries sustained in a one-car crash near Georgetown, Texas. Born Nov. 12, 1948, in Seaman, he was the son of Fred and Myrl (Shupert) Daum. He had lived in Yorktown, Va. before moving to Bartlett. Mr. Daum attended Kent State University, the Florida Institute of Technology and the Naval War College. He retired in 1998 from the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Lt. Colonel. He served in Germany, Korea, Japan and Vietnam, earning two Army Commendation Medals, a Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. Mr. Daum was the owner of All Tune and Lube in Killeen, Tx., which he opened following his retirement from the military. Survivors include his wife, Janet (Peters), formerly of Hiram; twin children, Fred John II and Rachel Elizabeth, both of Bartlett, Texas; and his mother, of Williamsburg, Va. There will be no calling hours. A graveside funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at Fairview Cemetery in Hiram, with the Rev. Jeffery L. Densmore
Jeffery L. Densmore, 33, of Cuyahoga Falls died Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000, at his home of natural causes. He lived in Cuyahoga Falls for five years and is formerly of Indiana and Hudson. Born April 25, 1966, in Ravenna, he was the son of Lawrence and Barbara S. (Reid) Densmore. He worked in sales at the Mattress Warehouse in Fairlawn and formerly owned and operated a comic book store in Indiana. He is survived by his brother, Marke of Monroe Falls; a step-bother, Ron Staggers of Ravenna; a sister Laura Densmore of Canton; his father and step-mother, Larry and Mary Densmore of Streetsboro; and a grandfather, John Reid of Streetsboro. His mother preceded him in death. Calling hours are 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the Shorts Funeral Home, Streetsboro Chapel. The funeral is at 11 a.m. Saturday. Anna Geiger
Anna Geiger, 75, of Elliot, formerly of Randolph, died of cancer Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at St. Thomas Hospital in Cuyahoga Falls. She was born Apr. 15, 1925 in Czechoslavakia and came to the United States in 1960. She lived in Randolph for more than 30 years before moving to the Akron area several years ago. Mrs. Geiger was a homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Henry, to whom she was married for 39 years; brothers-in-law, Conrad and Phillip, both of Randolph and John of Ewington, Oh.; and sisters-in-law, Barbara of Randolph and Liz of Akron. Cremation has taken place. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the home of Conrad Geiger, 787 Hartville Road, Randolph.

Doris Earley
Doris Earley, 78, of Sun City Center, Fl., died Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000, at South Bay Hospital in Tampa. She was born in Cleveland and had worked as a librarian. Survivors include a son, Daniel of Hiram; a daughter, Debby of Sun City Center; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. John Bradford Holt
Former Portage County resident John Bradford Holt, 81, of South Bloomingville, Ohio, died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at his home. Born Jan, 21, 1919 in Cleveland, he was the son of John W. and Gertrude L. (Walton) Holt. He lived in Portage County for part of his life. Mr. Holt attended Cornell University and graduated from Case Western Reserve University in 1951 with a degree in engineering administration. Throughout his varied career, he maintained a love of trains. In the 1940s, he and a friend bought a narrow-gauge steam engine No. 8, which ran on the Bridgeton & Harrison Railroad in Maine. They sold the engine to the Edaville Railroad in Massachusetts, and it now sits in the Maine Narrow Gauge Museum in Portland. Mr. Holt was an active volunteer on the Hocking Scenic Railroad after he and his wife moved to Hocking Hill, Ohio, in 1986. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, He served in the 758th Railway Shop Battalion from 1943 to 1946, spending two of those years in India. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Logan, Ohio. Survivors include his wife, Barbara, to whom he was married 50 years; sons, Gregory (Marianne) of North Olmsted and Jonathan (Anna Marie) of Maple Heights; daughter, Mrs. Gary (Stephanie) Larson of Lyndhurst; and two grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church in Logan, Ohio. Visitation will follow in the Westminster House of the church. Margaret McCleary, 77
WINDHAM - Margaret "Peg" McCleary, 77, of 9921 S. Bradford St., died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at her home after a lengthy illness. Born Oct. 29, 1922, in Youngstown, she was the daughter of William and Louise (Mullen) O'Conner. She was an area resident for 50 years. She was a longtime member of Saint Michael Catholic Church in Windham. She enjoyed knitting and liked to play cards and bingo. Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Donald "Mac" McCleary; sons, Thomas of Cortland and Donald "Skip" Jr. of Newton Falls; daughter, Renee Ziska of Windham; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and sister, Catherine Sauce, of Columbus. Her son, James "Crunch" McCleary, brother, William O'Conner, and sisters, Mary Louise Burdick, Mildred Testa Davidson, and "Teddy" Grove, all died previously. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Saint Michael Catholic Church in Windham. Burial is in Windham Township Cemetery.

Robert McGarry, 56
STOW - Robert J. McGarry, 56, of Chatwood Drive, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at his home. Born May 5, 1944, in Ravenna, he was the son of Charles T. and Juanita J. (Miller) McGarry. He was an executive of global logistics planning for the Swagelok Co. in Solon. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He was an avid golfer and a sports fan. He traveled extensively. Survivors include his sons, Matthew and Scott, both of Stow; sister, Jan (Ron) Snowberger of Kent; his mother, Juanita J. (Miller) of Kent; and his former wife, Colleen McGarry, of Stow. His father, Charles T., died in 1985. There will be no calling hours and a private service will be held through Bissler & Sons Funeral Home. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.
