Elmer R. Bormuth, 74
Elmer R. Bormuth, 74, of Ravenna, a talented compositor at the Record-Courier who during his 42 years in the newspaper business it evolve from hot metal to computerized type, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital. Born May 16, 1926, in Ravenna, he was a son of Vernon D. and Eva Lena (Barkes) Bormuth. He was a lifelong Ravenna resident. Mr. Bormuth started at the Record Courier in 1942 when still in high school and eventually became a compositor. In that capacity he was a specialist in the production of advertisements placed by area businesses. Mr. Bormuth about half of his career composed those advertisements with a linotype machine. Lines of type having been produced by him on the machine, Mr. Bormuth would then place them in a metal frame called a chase and space the type with metal slugs to meet the specifications of layouts submitted by the Advertising Department. It was hot and at times exhausting work, but much of that changed in the mid-1960s when off-set printing was introduced at the Record-Courier and type began being produced photographically by computers that controlled light flashes on photographic paper. From that time on, scissors and a waxing machine were Mr. Bormuth's tools of the trade. Though the tasks involved less muscle and sweat, the hot metal days of his past evoked a kind of masculine pride in compositors like Mr. Bormuth. He would occasionally wax nostalgic about the past and note, "things just aren't like they used to be." Then Mr. Bormuth, always proud of his ability to produce, would get back to creating advertisements out of paper, scissors, and wax. "He witnessed some major changes in the production of newspapers and Elmer handled it all very professionally," Publisher David Dix said Saturday. "He was extremely dependable, the kind of person who contributed importantly behind the scenes and without whom the Record-Courier would not been as successful all these years," Dix said. When not working at the newspaper, Mr. Bormuth enjoyed being with his family. He also liked bowling. Handy with tools, he was an able do it yourselfer. That led, following his retirement from the Record-Courier in 1984, to his becoming a custodian at his church, the First United Methodist Church in Ravenna. Mr. Bormuth was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. The experience left him convinced of the importance of supporting American business and labor. "Buy a foreign car," he used to say, "and put five more Americans out of work." He was a member of the Ravenna Elks. He was a 1944 Ravenna High School graduate. His wife of 44 years, Doris (Dix), survives. Also surviving are his son, Alan (Erin) of Minerva; daughters, Crystal of Deerfield and Beverly of Ravenna; six grandchildren; and a brother, Earl of Kent. A brother, Lester died previously. Calling hours are 6-8 p.m. today at Shorts Funeral Home (www.legacy.com) Ravenna Chapel. The funeral is at 2 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Ravenna with Revs. Thomas Poremba and Vernon White officiating. Burial is in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Ravenna.
