Beulah M. Dick, 73
BRADY LAKE - Beulah M. Dick, 73, died unexpectedly Friday, Sept. 22, 2000. Born Sept. 4, 1927, in Alexandria, Ohio, she was the daughter of Carl and Florence (Kent) Bacon. She had lived in Brady Lake for 55 years. Mrs. Dick worked for the Ohio Department of Transportation. She was a member of the Brady Lake Women's Club. Survivors include her son, James of Kent; daughter, Deborah Nicholson of Brimfield; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Her husband, William, died in 1987. A brother, Carl Bacon Jr., died previously. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Kent Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Meduri officiating. Burial will be in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent.

Glen E. Gougler, 79
RANDOLPH - Glen E. Gougler, 79, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Manor Care in Canton. Born April 8, 1921, in Springfield, Ohio, he was the son of Charles and Hazel (Featherolf) Gougler. He had lived in Randolph most of his life. Mr. Gougler retired from the Wean United Steel Co. in Youngstown where he was a machinist. Survivors include his son, David of Randolph; daughter, Glenna (Dale) Everhart of North Canton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters, Ethel Jean Knapp of Colorado and Ruth Neading of Tennessee; and riend, Ruth Moore of Ravenna. His wife, Anna May, and brother, Earl, died previously. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until services at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wood-Kortright Funeral Home in Ravenna. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Randolph.

Richard H. Cox, 47
Former Kent resident Richard Henry Cox, 47, of West Palm Beach, Fla., died Saturday, Sept. 16, 2000. Born Nov. 9, 1952, in Ravenna, he was a son of Rachel and James Cox. He lived most of his life in Kent before moving to Florida. He was a graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent. Survivors include his daughter, Shawna of Mogadore; brothers, Robert Elliott of North Carolina, Vance of Akron, and David of Kent; sisters, Lydia Blair of Akron and Louvina of Kent. His parents; brother, James Elliott; and grandmother, Ruth Zatio, and aunt, Rebecca Mack, died previously. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family. Christopher R. Dillon
Christopher Richard Dillon, 38, of Akron, a former Rootstown resident, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000, at Akron City Hospital after a motorcycle accident Wednesday in Akron. Born May 15, 1962, in Ravenna, he was a son of Richard and Marjorie (Aberegg) Dillon. Reared in Rootstown, he was a 1980 graduate of Rootstown High School. He had lived in Akron for 12 years. Mr. Dillon was a delivery driver for Wonder Bread in Akron. He was a member of the Cuyahoga Falls Eagles Club. Survivors include his wife Coreen (Klein), whom he married in 1993; father, Richard of Florida; and brother, Randall of Cuyahoga Falls. His mother died in 1980. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel (www.legacy.com), where services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the Rev. Ruth Chartier officiating. Melvin W. Wilson, 78
GARRETTSVILLE - Melvin W. Wilson Jr., 78, died Friday, Sept. 22, 2000, at Longmeadow Care Center in Ravenna after a long illness. Born April 23, 1922, in Garrettsville, he was a son of Melvin L. and Edith (Kaser) Wilson Sr. He was a life resident of Garrettsville. Mr. Wilson was a repairman for Cook Heating in Garrettsville. He enjoyed farming, bingo and his family. Survivors include his son, Dennis (Sandy) of Garrettsville; two grandchildren; and sister, Gladys Hrobak of Kent. His wife, Norma Jean (White), whom he married July 11, 1945, died Dec. 4, 1999. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until services at noon Monday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville (www.legacy.com), with the Rev. Fred Bell officiating. Justus Harrington, 85
Justus K. Harrington, 85, of South Chestnut Street, Kent, died Sunday, Sept. 24, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Jan. 22, 1915, in Columbus, he was the son of Earl E. and Helen Kirk (Justus) Harrington. Mr. Harrington retired as an assistant to the comptroller in 1985 from Kent State University, where he had worked for 25 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kent. Survivors include his wife, Betty (Miller), whom he married April 4, 1942; sons, Kirk of Cuyahoga Falls and Gary (Judy) of Kent; five grandchildren; half-brother, Earl H. Harrington of Emmitsburg, Md., and half-sister, Rita Magee of Damascus, Md. His sister, Julia Fisher, died in 1996. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent. Mary Bethel, 82
NEWTON FALLS - Mary (Jane) Bethel, 82, of 342 E. Broad St., died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Laurie Ann Nursing Home in Newton Falls of natural causes. Born Dec. 29, 1917, in Somerset, Pa., she was the daughter of Harry Shumaker and Daryl Fisher. She had lived in Newton Falls since 1942. Mrs. Bethel was a receptionist for Trumball Memorial Hospital for six years. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Newton Falls and was the first lady deacon at the church. She was also a member of the Newton Falls Pythian Sisters, as well as the Newton Falls Rebekka Lodge No. 311 and the American Legion in Newton Falls. She enjoyed working with children, and was active with the Girl Scouts and the Campfire Girls. Survivors include daughters, Mrs. Robert (Betty) Force of Newton Falls, Mrs. Steve (Daryl) Shelly Bobby of Newton Falls and Mrs. Ron (Carol) Statti of Chilhowie, Va.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Mrs. Harry (Nora) Suder and Mrs. Susan Stahl, both of Somerset, Pa. Her husband, Eugene, brother, Robert Shumaker, and sister, Ruth Foust, all died previously. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m., at the First Christian Church in Newton Falls. Burial will be in Crown Hill Memorial Park.

Betty Welker, 73
DEERFIELD - Betty B. Welker, 73, died Saturday, Sept. 23, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna, following a period of declining health. Born Nov. 30, 1926, in Atwater, she was the daughter of Howard and Nellie (Mangus) Duvall. She lived in Deerfield for 50 years, but spent her winters in the St. Cloud and Orlando, Fla. areas. Mrs. Welker and her husband owned the Welker Hardware Store in Deerfield. She was a member of OES, Palmy chapter and the Deerfield American Legion. She attended the Deerfield Evangelical Friends Church and was a Brownie/Girl Scout leader. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Clair; son Gerald (Sabrina) of Deerfield; daughters, Barbara (William) Stutler of Homeworth, Susan (Steven) Fleming of Charlestown and Laura (Gary) Schering of Manchester; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Ed of Akron and Howard of Deerfield; sisters, Alice Everitt of Alliance and Sally Kristoff of Ocean Side, Calif. Son, Larry, died previously. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where OES services will follow. Services will be held at the funeral home Wednesday at 1 p.m., with Pastor Jody Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Atwater Cemetery.

Lela VanVoorhis, 88
Lela K. VanVoorhis, 88, died Thursday, Sept. 21, 2000. Mrs. VanVoorhis was born in Canton and was a life-long resident of the area. She formerly was employed at Stern & Mann's. Survivors include her sons, Dale (Bonnie) of Hiram and Larry (Karen) of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter, Rita (Robert) Schlemmer of Stow; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Her husband, Wilbur, died in 1960. Calling hours will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Redmon Funeral Home in Stow, where services will be held at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Alvin Boehlke officiating. Jack J. Schafer, 77
Services will be held Saturday for Jack Junior Schafer, 79, who died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000 at St. Thomas Hospital in Akron following complications from a fall he had suffered earlier in the month. A longtime leader in the Ravenna industrial community, he served on the board of directors of the A.C. Williams Co. for 25 years after joining the company as treasurer in 1952. He also was vice president/treasurer and a director of Trexler Rubber Co. from its founding in 1953 until he retired in 1996. Born Dec. 13, 1920, in Ravenna, he was a son of Eli O. and Mable Ruth (Long) Schafer. He was graduated from Ravenna High School in 1938. He lived in Ravenna until 1984, when he and his wife, Neva (Trexler), moved to Aurora. His college education at Kent State University, from which he graduated in 1948, was interrupted by World War II. He became a member of the U.S. Eighth Air Force 92nd Bombardment Group, serving as a waist gunner and radar man on a B-17. In that capacity participated in 25 missions over Europe including the Battle of the Bulge, one of the largest aerial attacks ever mounted by the Allies during the war. Mr. Schafer survived that battle and other missions, but in March 1945, less than two months before Germany's surrender, the B-17 on which he was serving was seriously hit on a mission over Berlin. Unable to return to base, the crippled plane managed to land safely by flying to neutral Sweden, where the crew sat out the remaining weeks of the war. Reported missing in action, it was more than six weeks before his family and hometown knew he was alive. Following the war, heworked in the accounting department of Oak Rubber Co. in Ravenna. In addition to his work in industry, Mr. Schafer participated in volunteer and civic organizations. He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Canton Consistory and a 40-year member of the Ravenna Rotary. He served as treasurer of the Portage County Chapter of the American Red Cross and he was active in the United Way of Portage County. In the 1950s, he was the Ward 3 representative of Ravenna City Council. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ravenna. In addition to his wife, Neva (Trexler), to whom he was married 54 years, survivors include his son, Jack William Trexler of Ravenna; daughter, Patricia Harper of Long Beach, Calif.; and one grandchild. His sister, Mary Pauline, and brother, Paul H., died previously. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until services at noon Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Dr. Judith Wozniak will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Memorials may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ravenna.

Helen D. Esposito, 87
Former Portage County resident Helen D. Esposito, 87, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000 at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Mich. Born March 14, 1913, in Akron, she was the daughter of Henry and Ann (Sanner) Zinkand. Mrs. Esposito worked as a quality control inspector at I.P.M. in Kent and at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna, had been a member of the Ravenna Band Patrons and the Ravenna Schools PTA and wasactive with the Portage County Democratic Party. For many years, she would personally take food to people who needed it. Survivors include her daughters, Loretta Grice of Brady Lake, Carol Ann Troy of Brookpark and Rosemary Kukan of Sterling Heights, Mich.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brother, Joseph Zinkand of Akron; and sister, Rosemary Kinder of Indianapolis, Ind. Her husband, Guy, and sister, Eleanor Danes, died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Mausoleum in Ravenna.

George M. Colp, 56
George McKee Colpo, Jr., 56, of Ravenna Township, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000, at the Cleveland Clinic. Born Feb. 29, 1944, in Washington, Pa., he was the son of George and Kathryn (Murphy) Colpo Sr. He was reared in Burgettstown, Pa. before moving to Ravenna 48 years ago. Mr. Colpo was a conductor for the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of the First Church of God in Ravenna and the Akron Eagles No. 555. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Lynn (Hysell), to whom he was married for 38 years; sons, Ken of Rootstown and Marc of North Carolina; daughter, Lisa Slechta of Ravenna; mother, Kathryn Colpo of Ravenna; six grandchildren; and sister, Linda Gombeda of Ravenna. A brother, Daniel, and nephew, Michael Gombeda, died previously. There will be no calling hours. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Church of God in Ravenna with the Rev. Phillip Miller officiating. Private burial will take place. Arrangements are being handled by the Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna chapel. Moynelle J. Behnke, 71
Moynelle Jean Behnke, 71, of Ravenna, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000 at the Cleveland Clinic. Born June 5, 1929, in Kent, she was the daughter of Fred C. and Lois (Kearce) Fahrny. She had lived in Stow, Auburn Township and Kent before moving to Ravenna in 1998. Mrs. Behnke was an accounting clerk for Alltel in Hudson. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kent and attended Auburn Community Church for 23 years. She was a member of the Grange for 50 years and a member of Kappa Phi since 1948. Survivors include her brother, Walter Fahrny of Rootstown. Her husband, Carl, died in 1978. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church of Kent, Wesley Chapel, with Dr. David Palmer and the Rev. Kay Dunlap officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Chagrin Falls. Arrangements are being handled by Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Memorials may be made to Parkinson's Research at Ohio State University.

Jarid M. Mason, 26
Jarid Matthew Mason, 26, of 4900 Spencer, Newton Falls, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2000 at Northside Medical Center in Youngstown. The Mahoning County coroner is investigating the cause of death. Born Sept. 17, 1974, in Warren, he was the son of Albert F. and Dorothy (Starkey) Mason. He had lived in Newton Falls and Windham. Mr. Mason was a welder for Plasteck. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and playing his guitar. Survivors include his father and stepmother, Albert and Sandy Mason of Newton Falls; mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Wilif Senft of Alberta, Canada; stepbrother, Michael Cybak of Newton Falls; half-sister, Lora Mason of Newton Falls; stepgrandparents, Elio and Louise Carocci of Newton Falls; and friend, Paula Holestine of Windham. Calling hours will be held from 9 a.m. until services at 11 a.m. Monday at James Funeral Home in Newton Falls. Burial will be in Newton Falls Cemetery.
