GARRETTSVILLE - Dorcie (Harper) Cooper, 100, who had 250 living direct descendants, including 121 great-grandchildren, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, in Portage County Nursing Home in Shalersville. Survivors include her sons, Leon (Margaret) of Florida and Dale (Barbara) of Nelson; daughters, Doris Marsh of North Jackson, Grace Blair of Nelson, Marjorie (Dick) Channel of Rootstown and Jean (John) Doraski of Nelson; 35 grandchildren; 86 great-grandchildren; 121 great-great-grandchildren; and two great-great-great-grandchildren. Her sons, Curtiss (Mabel) and Gary; daughter, Hazel Spry; and brothers, Palmer "Tim" Harper and Cecil "Bus" Harper; and eight grandchildren died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home in Garrettsville (www.legacy.com), where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Barbara Williams, 80
MOGADORE - Barbara H. Williams, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000 at Copley Health Center in Copley Township following a brief illness. Born March 12, 1920, in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Joseph H. and Helen T. (Griffin) Scheeser. She had lived most of her life in Akron before moving to Mogadore in 1994. Mrs. Williams had been employed by Quaker Oats, Ace Mitchell's Bowler's Mart and several other jobs in retirement. She was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church in Akron and was an avid reader. Survivors include her son, David (Charlene) of Mogadore; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Helen T. Daum of Camp Hill, Pa. Her husband, Clarence, died in 1986. Seven brothers and two sisters also died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, Mogadore, where a parish vigil service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Matthew Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas McGovern officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Mogadore. Memorials may be made to the Mogadore Rescue Squad, 135 S. Cleveland Ave., Mogadore, 44260 or to St. Matthew Church.

Fay Stockman, 82
STOW - Fay N. Stockman, 82, died Nov. 23, 2000 at Cuyahoga Falls General Hospital after a short illness. Born in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Anna and Talmage Frizzell. She had been a resident of Stow for the past 38 years. Mrs. Stockman loved to play bridge with her bridge group in Tallmadge and at the Twin Lakes Country Club. She is survived by her husband, Richard; daughter Virginia (Gregory) Taylor; two grandchildren; and sister-in-law Eloise (Jim) Clark of Kent. Her sister, Gladys Spiller, died previously. Cremation has taken place. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Redmon Funeral Home, were services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday with the Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Betty Martin, 77
Betty Dunn Martin, 77, died Monday, Nov. 20, in Los Alamos, N.M., from complications of myelodysplasia. Mrs. Martin was a graduate of Mackenzie High School in Detroit, Mich., and attended Wayne State University in Detroit and Maryville College in Maryville, Tenn. Survivors include her son, Joseph of Salt Lake City, Utah; daughters, Linnea of Champaign, Ill., and Elizabeth (Giridhar) Martin Raichur; three grandchildren; and sisters, Lucille McDowell of Pompano Beach, Fla., and Lee Resner of Long Beach, Calif. Her husband, William, to whom she was married 50 years, died in 1996. years, A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Dec. 2 at the Hiram Christian Church. Visitors may greet the family prior to the service and are invited to a reception at the Martin home following the burial service at Fairview Cemetery in Hiram. E. Hale Chatfield
Services will be held Wednesday for E. Hale Chatfield, 64, who championed poetry as a Hiram College faculty member and poet-in-residence and was the author of 18 books. Mr. Chatfield, 64, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Geauga Regional Hospital following an apparent heart attack at his home in Huntsburg. Born March 26, 1936, in Passaic, N.J., he was the son of Wilson and Anne (Webster) Chatfield. He had lived in the area for 30 years. Mr. Chatfield joined the Hiram College English faculty in 1964. He served as dean of students from 1971 to 1974 and was dean of campus life from 1980 to 1982. He was granted emeritus status when he retired. He was the founder and editor of the Hiram Poetry Review, which first was published in 1967. The journal won the Ohioana Library Association's Award for Editorial Excellence in 1985. In 1993, Mr. Chatfield won the association's poetry award. As a member of Ohio's Poets in the Schools program, he visited public schools to promote the reading and writing of poetry. He also developed an innovative program which enabled students to explore composition of poetry through the use of computers. Mr. Chatfield was president of Chatfield Software Inc., which was formed in 1990 to design, produce and market educational software. He earned a bachelor's degree from Wesleyan University and a master's degree from Rutgers University. He received a poetry fellowship from the National Endowment of the Arts and a writing fellowship from the Ohio Arts Council. He also was the poet-in-residence at Yaddo, a prestigious artists' community in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., in 1975. He was a member of the American Association of University Professors and was its Hiram chapter president in 1997. He also belonged to the Ohio Poets, Cleveland League of Poets, National Organization of Women, American Civil Liberties Union and the Society for Science and Literature. He wrote 18 books, more than half of them poetry, and was published in many literary periodicals and anthologies. He enjoyed computer programming, fishing and playing poker. Survivors include his wife, Denise (Zadeik), whom he married June 22, 1957 in New York City; sons, Stephen of Rhode Island, Peter (Sallie) of Maryland and Alexander (Julie) of Florida; daughter, Jennifer (Robert) Wagner of Westlake; seven grandchildren; and brother, George (Anne) of Virginia. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Church Episcopal, 21 Aurora St., Hudson, with Stephen B. Smith officiating. Russell Funeral Service in Middlefield is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Christ Church new building fund or to the American Cancer Society.

William H. Rock
William H. Rock, 78, of Ravenna, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna. Born Sept. 15, 1922 in East Palestine, Ohio, he was a son of Edward and Minnie (Chill) Rock. He was a life resident of Ravenna. Mr. Rock was a self-employed carpenter. He attended Immaculate Conception Church in Ravenna. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Rita (Hanson) of Alaska; sons, James E. (Helen) and Michael, both of Alaska; and daughter, Linda, of Alaska; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Shorts Funeral Home in Ravenna, with Msgr. Robert Sabatino officiating. Private burial will take place.

Hercy F. Given Jr.
SUFFIELD - Hercy F. Given Jr., 49, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, after a long fight with cancer. Born in Richwood, W.Va., he had lived most of his life in Suffield. Mr. Given was employed by Omnova Solutions for 28 years. He was a member of Englebeck Lodge No. 751, Valley of Akron, and Mogadore United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Connie, to whom he was married 28 years; daughter Kristin (James) Smith of Toledo; mother, Leila; brother, Harry (Linda) Given of West Virginia; and sisters Kate (Bill) Crites and Barbara (Arnold) Ayers, both of West Virginia, and Betty Bailey of Warren. His father, Hercy Sr., died previously. Mary Louise (O'Hara) Baluck
Mary Louise (O'Hara) Baluck, 88, of Austintown, a former Kent resident, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Forum Northside Hospital in Youngstown. Born June 5, 1912 in Carbondale, Pa., she was the daughter of James and Genevieve (Linnen) O'Hara. Mrs. O'Hara-Baluck was a homemaker, a member of St. Joseph Church, the St. Joseph Church ladies guild and Golden Agers senior citizens group. She had been a member of the Youngstown Curia Legion of Mary for more than 40 years and had served as president. She was a member and former secretary of the Infant Jesus of Prague Guild in Kent. Survivors include her husband, Robert B. Baluck, to whom she married Oct. 26, 1963; brother, Edward O'Hara of Jacksonville, Fla. and sister Mariam Neary of Kent. Her brothers, James and Joseph O'Hara and sister, Mildred DuChai, died previously. Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home in Austintown, 4303 Mahoning Ave., Austintown where funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Thursday. Funeral services also will be held at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Austintown.

David Raymond Pudder
David Raymond Pudder, 61, of Hillsdale Drive, Lake Milton, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, at his residence of cancer. Born Jan. 10, 1939 in Ashtabula, he was the son of Okey Raymond and Agnes Frances (Knafel) Pudder. Formerly of Youngstown, he had lived in Lake Milton for past eight years. He was a steelworker for U.S. Steel. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of American Legion Post No. 737 in Lake Milton. He also was a member of Lake Milton Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, Darlene Cheryl (Cowell), whom he married Feb. 4, 1995; stepdaughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Dawn) Sallaz of Lake Milton; two grandchildren; brother, Paul of Kent; and half-sister, Marie Wett of Ravenna. A sister,Joyce Kahn, died previously. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday at Lake Milton PResbyterian Church. Arrangements were handled by James Funeral Home in Newton Falls.

Margaret Mary-Alice Carpenter
Margaret Mary-Alice Carpenter, 80, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in Thomasville, Ga. Born Dec. 19, 1919, in St. Louis, Mo., she was the daughter of Robert and Helen (Giese) Wiley. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of Madeira Beach Women's Club. Survivors include her son, Dr. Paul R. Jr. of Thomasville, Ga.; daughters, Susan Compton of Huntsville, Ala. and Peggy Goetti of Russikon, Switzerland; six grandchildren; and sister, Patricia O'Brian of St. Louis, Mo. Her husband, Dr. Paul R. "Bob," died in 1974. Funeral services were held Friday at All Saints Episcopal Church in Georgia. Burial was in Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. Charles J. "Jack" Maxwell Sr.
Charles J. "Jack" Maxwell Sr., 73, the father of Wanda (Charles) Foust of Mantua, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000, in Cape Coral, Fla. Born March 19, 1927, he was a son of Wendell Fowler and Martha C. Maxwell. Mr. Maxwell was a railroad engineer and also worked for many years in Hudson as a carpenter and an electric meter reader. In addition to his daughter in Mantua, survivors include his wife Evelyn (Dunham) of Cape Coral, Fla.; son Bruce of Cuyahoga Falls; daughters, Christine Maxwell of Cape Coral, Fla., and Martha Hasselbach of Granville, Ohio; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brothers Frank Wright of Zanesville and Sam Wright of Tennessee; and sister Ruth Richards of Delaware. A son, Charles Jr., and daughter, Jacqueline Maxwell, and brothers David and Jimmy died previously. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson-Romito Funeral Home, 19 E. Main St., Hudson, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be at Crown Hill Memorial park, Twinsburg.

Philip C. Jones
FREEDOM - Philip C. Jones, 48, died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2000, at Akron City Hospital. Born Aug. 20, 1952, he was the son of J. Philip and Norma (Collins) Jones. He lived in Ravenna before moving to Freedom 30 years ago. He had been a dairy farmer and most recently was an independent truck driver. Survivors include his wife, Gayle M. (Cooley); daughter, Alicia, at home; his parents of Arizona; and sisters, Kathleen Johnson of Illinois and Emily Kelly of Indiana. There will be no calling hours. Bettie K. Schultz
Bettie K. Schultz, 82, of Ravenna, died Tuesday Nov. 28, 2000, at Altercare in Ravenna. Born Jan. 15, 1918, in Wheeling, W.Va., she was the daughter of the William and Catherine Schultz. She had lived in Kent and Ravenna. Miss Schultz was a sergeant with the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific, serving as a registered nurse. The then worked as a nurse at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna for 34 years before she retired. She had no surviving relatives but she had many friends in Kent and Ravenna. Local arrangements are being handled by Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. Funeral arrangements are being provided by Rush Funeral Homes in Clarington, Ohio.

Edna Opal Terrill
Former Ravenna area resident Edna Opal Terrill, 93, of Akron, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000. Born Aug. 28, 1907, in Reader, W.Va., she was the daughter of the Rev. Charles and Lucy Gadd. She lived most of her life in Ravenna before moving to Rockynol Retirement Center in Akron 13 years ago. Mrs. Terrill was recognized for her work at Rockynol and at the Hattie Larlham Foundation, which her sister, Hattie Larlham founded. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ravenna. Survivors include her sister, Winnie Hayden, nieces and nephews. Her husband, Orville, whom she married in 1929, died previously. Her brothers, Ross, Oliver, Friend and Harry; and sisters, Hattie Larlham, Mae, Louisa, Ella and Gertrude, died previously. Visitation will be held from noon until services at 1 p.m. today at Ciriello Funeral Home, 3653 W. Market St., Akron, with the Rev. Harry Watson and the Rev. Tom Heinlien officiating. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Park in Ravenna.

Rodney Michael Kibler
Rodney Michael Kibler, 30, of St. Petersburg, Fla. a former Portage County resident, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, in St. Petersburg. Born May 16, 1970, in Barberton, he was the son of Arthur Kibler and Gerry (Kibler) Mahony. He was a 1988 Rootstown High School graduate and attended welding classes at Maplewood Joint Vocational School in Ravenna for two years. Mr. Kibler was a welder. Survivors include his wife, Melissa; daughters Holly, Danielle, and Sarah; mother and stepfather, Gerry and Mathew Mahony of Rootstown; father, Arthur Kibler of Nashville, Tenn.; brother, Mark Kibler of Rockwell N.C.; stepsisters, Sherry Hostetler and Christine Straher; and grandparents, Homer Kibler and Bernice Mahony. His grandparents, Robert and Bertha Adelman and Lucille Kibler, died previously. Cremation and burial were in St. Petersburg. Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 17 at St. Peter of the Fields Church in Rootstown.

Arline Roesel
BRIMFIELD - Arline Roesel, 68, died unexpectedly Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000. Born June 16, 1932 in Cleveland, she was the daughter of Kenneth and Margaret (O'Donnell) Ackerman. She was a longtime area resident and a 1950 graduate of North High School. Mrs. Roesel had worked as a payroll clerk at General Tire. Survivors include her husband, Walter, to whom she was married 47 years; daughters, Jeanette Marie of Cuyahoga Falls, Deborah (Frederick) Culver of Copley, Susan (Tim) Ball of Lutz, Fla., Diane (Joe) Sabo of Randolph, Donna of Copley, Kathleen (Blake) Langston of Rootstown; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren and sister Patricia Larisch. Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Dunn-Quigley, Ciriello & Carr Funeral Home, 811 Grant Street, Akron. Herman Fischer
Herman Fischer, 84, of Ravenna, died Friday, Nov. 24, 2000 at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren. Born Sept. 20, 1916, in Georgetown, Ill., he was the son of Albert and Henrietta (Matrisch) Fischer. He lived in Germany before moving to Ravenna in 1965. Mr. Fischer was a boiler operator at the Portage County Administration Building and Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna before retiring in 1993 after 35 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving for 24 years. He was a member of the Ravenna Eagles and Ravenna American Legion Post No. 331. Survivors include his sons, Frederick of Ravenna and Harry (Terry) of Dallas; daughter, Patricia (Ken) Maas of Braceville; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Fred of Gloversville, N.Y.; and sisters, Louise Marks of Ravenna and Dorothy Barry of Northville, N.Y. His wife, Hannelore "Lori," died in 1994. His son, Richard died in 1976. Three sisters also died previously. Services were held today at Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, with the Rev. Carl Holm officiating. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery in Ravenna. Memorials can be made to the Portage County Disabled American Veterans.

Marjorie Thompson, 84
Marjorie J. Thompson, 84, of Fairchild Avenue, Kent, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at the Kent Healthcare Center. Born Nov. 10, 1916, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of Clifton and Carolyn (Baer) Robinson. Mrs. Thompson was a retired engineering technician for the Bureau of Reclamation and recently worked for the Baha'i Faith Center in Haifa, Israel. She had been an active member of Baha'i Faith locally and internationally. Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Geisey of Kent and Toby Burke of Salem, Ore.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brothers, John Robinson of Libertyville, Ill. and Robert Robinson of Antioch, Ill. Her husband, A.L. "Tom" Thompson, died previously. There will be no calling hours. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent with the Spiritual Assembly of the Baha'i Faith of Kent officiating. Joseph Haas, 87
Joseph E. Haas, 87, of Cherry Street, Kent died Saturday, November, 11, 2000, at his home in Kent. Born July 7, 1913, in Kent, he was the son of Joseph Edward and Matilda (Kozaks) Haas. Mr. Haas worked as a machine operator for Lamson & Sessins. He was a member of St. Patrick Church in Kent, the Kent Veterans of Foreign Wars and he enjoyed music and fishing. He was a War II Army veteran. Survivors include his sons, Richard (Sally) of Kent, William (Judy) of Randolph and Stephen (Laurie) of Mogadore; daughters, Frances (Erwin) Heeter, Patricia Haas and Pamela Flynt, all of Kent and Matilda Haas of Wisconsin; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. His wife, Mary A. (Luzader), died in 1976. His brother, John and sisters, Thersea, Helen, Agnes, Mary, Anna, Emma, Martha, Louise and Pauline all died previously.
