Ruth Elizabeth Sanford (nee Baer)
Ruth Elizabeth Sanford (nee Baer), age 93, of Centerville, Ohio, passed away Saturday, June 13, 1998, at Manor Care. She was born in Warren, Ohio and raised in New Castle, Pa. Ruth graduated from Hood College, taught school and worked at Kent State University. She resided in Delray Beach, Fla., for 30 years. Preceded in death by her husband, Rowland Leroy Sanford, in 1973, she is survived by stepdaughters and their husbands, Joan Cynthia and Jay Berry of Tallmadge, Diane (Dulie) and David Greer of Dayton, and Patricia Vanderpool of Rochester, N.Y.; grandchidlren, Cathy Riter and husband Tony, and Neil Berry and wife Karen, all of Stow, Michael Berry and wife Judy of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Becky Herman of Hilton Head, S.C., Richard Herman and wife Muffy of Springboro, and Susie Herman of Boulder, Colo.; great-grandchildren, Jamie Riter Cook and husband Jason, Jennifer Riter and Tony Riter, all of Stow; and great-great-grandson, Jason C. June Helen Saurer
June Helen Saurer, 76, died Saturday, May 30, 1998. ``Dee Dee,'' as she was known to family and friends, was originally from Bellevue, Ohio. She resided in Orrville for 20 years, Germany for seven years, and Las Vegas for 26 years, and was a member of the O.E.S. for over 50 years. A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, June was preceded in death by her husband, Robert B.; and is survived by her children, Robert B. (Shareen) Saurer Jr. of Las Vegas and Shirley (Steve) Catalano of Copley; brother, George (Nancy) Neuman of Bellevue; sisters-in-law, Arlene Saurer of Akron and Frances Saurer of Texas; grandchildren, Amy (Rich) Siebert, Regina (Chris) Cain, Stephen and Robert Catalano, Tara (Joey) Loya, Jennifer (Roger) Hansen, Michael Saurer, and Robert B. Saurer III; five great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Jenny Westover. She was truly a loving and integral part of all of our lives. The family would especially like to thank the staff of the Hospice Care Center in Copley, Ohio, for the kindness, support, happiness, and love they brought to June's life, and the compassion that was shown in her final days. Alice J. (Carney) Sauter
Alice J. (Carney) Sauter died May 30, 1998, in Port Charlotte, Fla. Lovingly remembered by her husband, Ken, as the ``nicest little Irish girl.'' Mrs. Sauter was the daughter of Arthur and Martha Carney of Akron. She was a 1928 graduate of North High School and attended The University of Akron. She lived in Peoria, Ill., from 1936-1946 and Sheboygan, Wis., from 1946-1966. Alice was a member of Pine Hills Country Club and actively participated in a dance club. Alice will be remembered for her love for animals, fishing, playing bridge, and a great sense of humor. She was preceded in death by two brothers and a twin sister. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth of Port Charlotte, Fla.; son, Dr. Robert McCord of Orlando, Fla.; stepdaughter, Kay Mohler of Port Charlotte, Fla.; five grandchildren; and brother, Don Carney of Denver, Colo. Service will be held 1 p.m. THURSDAY at the Billow FALLS Chapel, Twenty-Third St. at Falls Ave., with Rev. David Klein officiating. Interment at Chestnut Hill Memorial Park. Dolores A. Sawan
Dolores Ameena Sawan, of Akron, died May 30, 1998. Dolores was a very loving and loved wife and mother. She deeply valued her friends and was valued by them. Dolores was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Melkite Church, enjoyed music and art, and was an avid antique collector. Dennis George Schaefer
Dennis George Schaefer, 52, of Randolph, died Sunday. Born Sept. 10, 1945, in Canton, the son of George and Nora (Moledor) Schaefer, he had lived in Randolph most of his life. Mr. Schaefer was a member of the St. Joseph Church of Randolph and the Knights of Columbus. He was a pipefitter for General Motors in Lordstown, where he had been employed for 29 years. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; sons, Michael Schaefer and fiancee, Patty Buchanan, of Cuyahoga Falls, and George Schaefer of Randolph; daughter, Susan Schaefer of Randolph; parents, George and Nora Schaefer of Randolph; brother, Daniel (Lynn) Schaefer of Rootstown; sisters, Rita (Don) Hohman of Randolph, Rose Ellen (Tom) Farnsworth of Hartville, and Mary Linda (Charles) Wells of Hartville; and many close friends and relatives. Friends will be received from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Wood-Kortright Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel. John M. Schafer
John M. Schafer, 80, went to be with the Lord on June 5, 1998 after fighting courageously during a long extended illness. He was born February 12, 1918 and lived his life in Akron, Ohio. He retired from Goodyear Tire after 39 years of service. He was a veteran of the Navy serving during World War II. He was a member of St. Francis DeSales Parish and Coventry AARP. Mr. Schafer was a devoted husband to his loving wife of 43 years, Isabel M. (Shipe) Schafer. He leaves his son, John F. of Pennsylvania; and three grandchildren, Barbara, Wendy and John, Jr. Mr. Schafer was a loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews. He also leaves his brothers, Ray (Jerry) and Norman (Patricia) of Akron; and sister-in-law, Rosalie. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Francis DeSales Parish in Portage Lakes with Reverand Father Sean J. Donnelly as celebrant. Kenneth Scheatzle
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Kenneth Scheatzle, 48, of San Francisco, Calif., formerly of Akron, died Saturday, May 30, 1998. Kenneth was born in Akron on July 31, 1949. He was a network controller for the Union Pacific Railroad in San Francisco. He graduated from Hoban High School and the Heald Institute of Technology. He also had an interest in the piano. Preceded in death by his father, Edgar and brother, Stephen J., he is survived by his son, Matthew Scheatzle of San Francisco; mother, Dorothy Scheatzle of Akron; brothers, John (Carol) of Akron and Thomas (Marta) of Columbia, S.C. He is also survived by a nieece and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, 9:30 a.m. at St. Vincent's Catholic Church. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Henry D. Schreiner
Henry D. ``Hank'' Schreiner, 74, passed away Thursday, June 11, 1998, after a short illness. Mr. Schreiner was an area native and a longstanding member of St. Martha's Parish in north Akron. A professional mechanical engineer, he had retired from Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. after 43 years of service. He and his wife, Grace, were winter residents of Stuart, Fla., where he served on the board of directors of Leisure Village. He is fondly remembered there for his lively wit, story-telling, and overall willingness to volunteer and entertain. He was an honorary member of the St. Philomena Study Club, president of the Akron Shuffleboard Club, where he was an avid player with a professional rating, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army. His survivors include wife, Grace M. (Brady); children, Beth (Ron) Ashley, Bernie (Gail) Schreiner, Tom (Margaret) Schreiner, Joanne Schreiner (Michael Coyle), Meg (Ron) Jones, Amy (John) Verlaney, and Danny Schreiner; grandchildren, Scott, Sarah, and Julia Ashley, Nicholas and Kristen Schreiner, Matthew and Kathryn Schreiner, Jessica, Nora, and Patrick Coyle, Jennifer and Emily Jones, Hannah, Sarah, and Laura Verlaney; brothers, Paul and Harold; sister, Edna; and numerous other family members and friends who loved him dearly. Marie E. ``Maw Maw'' (King) Scott, 80, passed away June 11, 1998. Born in Akron, she retired from the M. O'Neil Co. and also had worked for J.C. Penney. Mrs. Scott was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church. Preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Augustus Haberkost, son, Edward King, and many brothers and sisters, she is survived by her husband of over 20 years of marriage, Wendell; son, James L. King of South Carolina; daughter, Carol Zink of Akron; grandchildren, Tonya Zink of Akron, Sandra Coon of Michigan, Elizabeth King of South Carolina and Thomas Zink of Akron; three great-grandchildren; sister, Betty Wonnel; and many nieces and nephews. Marie Ellen (Moore) Scott
On this beautiful Sunday morning, May 31, 1998, God gently called His child Marie to come home and walk with Him in His garden while the dew lay fresh on the roses . . . Our wife, our mother, our grandmother was truly loved and will forever live on in our hearts. She was born near Dover, Ohio, on May 14, 1912. She was employed at Springfield Township High School, retiring to Bonita Springs, Fla., where she enjoyed the sunshine and flowers, and recently returned to Ohio to spend her remaining years near her family. Preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Moore; and sisters, Lillian Dunn, Harriet Patton, and Jane Maxwell, she is survived by husband, James T. Scott; son, Thomas J. Scott (Geneva); daughter, Elizabeth (Betty) Zidan (Garry); grandchildren, Keith Scott, Daniel Newcome (Debbie), Donald Newcome (Lori), Janice Schwarzinger (John), John Zidan (Tina), James Zidan (Lori); 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter. She also leaves behind a very special friend, ``Willie,'' and countless memories of a beautiful sweet lady. Rosie Ruby Lee Scott, 50, passed away June 1, 1998, at St. Thomas Hospital. Born in Red Springs, N. C., she lived in this community 28 years. She is survived by sons, William A. Kennedy, David C. (Thelma) Kennedy, both of Akron; mother, Lucille Jennings of Marysville, Ohio; father, Levester McNeil of Akron; sisters, Katie (Rev. Ron), Julie, Mary, Carolyn, Mamie, and JoAnne; brothers, Levon and James; four grandchildren, a host of other relatives and friends. Sara ``Sally'' B. Seanor
Sara ``Sally'' B. Seanor, 85, died June 26, 1998. Mrs. Seanor was born in Bridgeport, Ohio and had lived in the Akron area since 1946. A member of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, she had been a volunteer for both the Blood Bank and the Kate Walter Barrett Board. She was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, Rex C. Seanor of Akron; son, Jeffrey (Karen) Seanor of Alliance, Ohio; nephew, James (Joyce) Beck of Willard, Ohio; nieces, Judy (John) Nemity of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Carol (Robert) Wilson of Martins Ferry, Ohio, and Kay (Art) Parry of Adena, Ohio. Mark G. Sears, 46, passed away May 31, 1998, in Honolulu, Hawaii, after a courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by wife, Janice; daughter, Melissa (Kenny) Gallegos of Mead, Colo.; mother, Betty (Richard) Bennett of Lakeland, Fla.; father, Gilbert (Judi) Sears Jr. of Tallmadge; brother, Dennis (Karen) Sears of Lakewood, Ohio; sister, Linda (Robert) Kory of Tallmadge; three grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Joseph J. Seibel ``Joe''
Joseph J. Seibel ``Joe,'' 73, of Mesa, Ariz., died May 31, 1998. Born in Akron, he served in the U. S. Army, during World War II. He was the owner of a restaurant and bar in Mesa and was retired. Survivors include wife, Josephine, ``Jo''; many nieces and nephews; sisters, Mary Durbin, Catherine Garske, and Rosemary Lotze; brothers, Jacob and Michael. Visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at Mt. View Memorial Gardens Mortuary Chapel, with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Services at 2 p.m. Friday, June 5, 1998, at Queen of Peace Church, 141 N. Florence B. Serfass (nee Huffman)
WADSWORTH -- Florence B. Serfass (nee Huffman), 88, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, after a brief illness. Mrs. Serfass was born in Wadsworth, where she was a lifelong resident and a member of the First Christian Church and Chapter 102 O.E.S. She was also a Red Cross volunteer, and enjoyed sewing and knitting. Mrs. Serfass was the wife of the late Kenneth, and is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Alice of Wadsworth; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Joe Williams of Wadsworth; grandchildren, Cindy Fraley, Kevin and Keith Serfass, Scott and Mike Williams; six great-grandchildren; brother, Wilbur Huffman of Wadsworth. Warner B. Shears
Warner B. Shears, 64, of Tallmadge, died Thursday, June 4, 1998. Mr. Shears was born in Tallmadge on April 1, 1934, and had been a resident of Tallmadge all of his life. He retired in 1990 from the RCA Rubber Co. after 37 years. He was a past coach for the Tallmadge Pee Wee Football League, a volunteer Tallmadge fireman for many years, and a Tallmadge school bus driver. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minda Faye, and is survived by his daughter, Theresa Kight of Suffield; sons, Douglas (Judy) Gatewood of Tallmadge, Richard Shears of Tallmadge, Daniel (Sue) Shears of Edinburg, Ohio, Mike (Debbie) Shears of Akron; 15 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and sister, Carol Semler of Akron. Natalie A. Shepherd
Natalie A. Shepherd, 58, died June 6, 1998. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she had worked as an accountant for the M. O'Neil Company for almost 10 years. She was also a principal and owner of the Shepherd Roofing Company for a number of years. Preceded in death by her husband, Frank E. ``Buzz'' Shepherd in 1996; she is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Marilyn Stock of Copley Twp.; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Beau Cross of Portage Lakes; grandchildren, Beau Willy Cross, Elliott, and Alex Stock; sisters, Jackie Winters, and Peggy Gulka and families; brothers, Jim and Pat McVay. Constance Mae Shook
Constance Mae Shook, 71, died peacefully on May 29, 1998. Born in Beaver Falls, Pa., Connie grew up and married in Akron, Ohio. In 1961, she and her family moved to New York. Connie and her husband, Jerry Shook, moved back to Ohio in 1988, settling in New Albany. She is survived by her husband of 51 years; her children, Sue, Marilyn, Nancy and David; sisters, Joanne Liddle and Sue Caprio; and 10 grandchildren. Connie loved animals and was a caring, generous spirit who will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her. Those who wish may contribute in her memory to the American Diabetes Association or to their local animal welfare organization.

M. Virginia Shue
WADSWORTH -- M. Virginia Shue, 79, died Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at Akron City Hospital, after a lengthy illness. Miss Shue was born in Copley and resided in Wadsworth most of her life. She was a teller and bookkeeper at Huntington National Bank, retiring in 1982 with 27 years service. She was a member of the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, and enjoyed sewing and crafts. Miss Shue is survived by brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Gene Shue of Wadsworth Township; sisters-in-law, Esther, Dorothy, Betty, and Helen Shue; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers, Clyde, Paul, Luther, Donald, Roy ``Duke'', Lloyd, and James Shue; sisters, Ethel, Ruth, Edith, and Janet Shue. The family will receive friends Sunday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Hilliard Cox Mullaney Funeral Home, 174 N. Lyman St., Wadsworth, where funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m., Rev. Valetta Shimer Slaby, 80, of 183 31st St. N.W., Barberton, died Saturday at her residence. Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Chapel, with the Rev. Slaby Sr. on June 17, 1985; he survives. She had been a homemaker who loved her family very much, and had attended the Clinton Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are daughter, Mrs. Dewyane (Janice) Stutler of Barberton; son and daughter-in-law, Richard H. and Marcia Shimer of Wadsworth; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; brother, Dennis Pepper of Vidor, Texas; sister, Mrs. Emma Belt of Ravenswood, W. Va. She was preceded in death by sisters, Osa Morrison, Evelyn Naylor, and Dorma Frame; brothers, Harry Pepper and Silas Pepper.
