Shirley (Shiril) Cairns
Shirley (Shiril) Cairns, 48, of Winthrop, Wash., died Jan. 28, 1998, after a five-month battle with liver cancer.
Born May 1, 1949, in Des Moines, Iowa, she resided in Akron from 1952 until she moved to the state of Washington in 1978 after graduating from Penn Hall in Chambersburg, Pa. Shirley established Rocking Horse Recreation (RHR), a riding stable and campground in Winthrop, and operated it as owner and manager for nearly 20 years.
Preceded in death by older brothers, Alan and Douglas Cairns, she is survived by daughters, Jessica and Meghan Sullivan; grandchildren, Steven and Allyse Sullivan of Winthrop, Wash.; parents, Joseph and Olive Cairns of Akron; brother, Donald Cairns of Milwaukee, Wis.; sister, Corinne Hodgson of Madison, Wis.; nieces and nephews in Madison, Wis.

Edwin J. Cantleberry
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Edwin J. Cantleberry, 75, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 18, 1998.
Born in Killbuck, Ohio, Mr. Cantleberry was a teacher with the Akron Public School system for over 30 years, mostly teaching at Glover Elementary School. He served with the Air Force during World War II, and was a longtime member of the Cuyahoga Falls Baptist Church.
Preceded in death by his wife, Lillian, in 1992, he is survived by daughter, Janet Mark of Cuyahoga Falls; son, James Edwin of Huron; grandchildren, Amy, Jacob, Nathan, and Aaron; sister, Vivian Gindlesberger of Wooster; brothers, William of Wooster and Lee of Brooklyn, Ohio.

Pasquale F. Capaccio
Pasquale F. Capaccio, 72, of Bath, died Feb. 26, 1998.
Mr. Capaccio was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., and served in the United States Army during World War II in both the European and Pacific theatres. For 16 years he was on the staff of the Brooklyn State Hospital.
An area resident since 1976, he leaves his son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Teresa of Bath; grandchildren, Christopher, Jennifer, and Daniel Patrick.

Mary Capan, 96, of Akron, passed away Feb. 26, 1998.
She was born in Kamenica, Croatia, and resided in this area most of her life. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society, and the Legion of Mary.
Preceded in death by husband, John, she is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Mary and John Turkal of Massillon; son and daughter-in-law, John and Patricia Capan of Akron; eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

He was born in Manchester and was a life resident of Barberton. He was employed with the B. F. Goodrich Co. with 34 years service, retiring 18 years ago, and was a World War II Army Air Force veteran.
Preceded in death by wife, Susanne, he is survived by sons, Robert of Fresno, Calif., David (Jeannie) of Augusta, Ga., Timothy (Cindy) of Barberton; daughter, Kathy (David) Egan of Stow; seven grandchildren; brothers, John, Harry, and Bruce, all of Manchester, Bill of Wadsworth; sister, Jane Hudkins of Mogadore.

LAKEMORE -- Richard M. Cliver, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 16, 1998.
Born in Jackson, Ohio, he lived most of his life in Lakemore, where he was a member of Lakemore United Methodist Church. Mr. Cliver was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, and retired from R.E.A. Express in 1978 after 40 years of service.
Preceded in death by his wife, Helen, in 1993, he is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Cathy of Lakemore; daughter and son-in-law, Lana and Skip Morrison of Lakemore; daughter, Carol Nye of Huntington Beach, Calif.; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Leanna Wideman of Florida; sister and brother-in-law, Lila and Don Goodspeed of Cincinnati; and sisters-in-law, June Hinton and Margaret Neilsen, both of Lakemore, and Lillian Eckberg of Ellet.

Stephen Arthur Coffey
Stephen Arthur Coffey, 31, passed away peacefully Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, from cystic fibrosis, a medical condition that he lived with since birth. Despite his disease, Stephen left this world having lived a remarkable rich, brilliant, and accomplished life. Stephen was a true inspiration; his philosophical decision was to put cystic fibrosis in his shadows rather than permitting this difficult illness to lead his life.
Stephen graduated from Jackson High School and the Akron University, where he received a baccalaureate in nursing. He was formerly employed as a Registered Nurse in the critical care unit at Barberton Citizens Hospital, followed by Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital, where he was nursing supervisor, and finally at Mercy Medical Center in Canton for the last five years. At Mercy Medical Center, he was nursing manager of the Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care Unit, then nursing manager of the Acute and Chronic Dialysis units, and most recently as a nursing supervisor. In addition, he had been employed by Malone College as a clinical nursing instructor.
Stephen was certified in Adult Critical Care Nursing and certified in Nephrology Nursing. In addition, he was, until the time of his death, a full-time graduate student of Akron University, College of Nursing Anesthesia. He also held a seat on the board of directors for the American Red Cross and as a member of the Ryan White Consortium.
Stephen passed away Wednesday morning in the loving arms of his family. His wit, sense of humor, intelligence, and charm will be deeply missed by those who survive him. He is survived by his parents, Fred and Joy Coffey of Massillon; his sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Bob Jones; nephews, Jason and Bradley Jones. He is survived by Jerry, Adam, and Jarrod Rizor. He will be sadly missed by his extended families at Barberton Citizens Hospital, Wadsworth Rittman Hospital, Mercy Medical Center (especially Nursing Administration and the Dialysis Unit), and his fellow classmates enrolled in the Akron University anesthesia program.
The funeral will be held at Heitgers Jackson Chapel on Saturday, Feb. 28, 1998, at 2 p.m., Rev. Doug Patton officiating. Burial will take place Feb. 28, 1998, at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens in North Canton, Ohio 44720. Visitation will be Friday, 6 to 9 p.m., at Heitger Jackson Chapel. Stephen's family requests that friends celebrate life by making contributions in loving memory of Stephen to the Cystic Fibrosis Care Fund at Children's Hospital in Akron.

Joseph F. Cook
Joseph F. Cook, died Feb. 22, 1998.
Joe was born on June 9, 1926 in Akron, the son of Theodore L. and Alma E. Cook. Mr. Cook attended Akron Public Schools, graduating from Buchtel High School in 1944. Following graduation, he served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1946. Joe attended the University of Akron and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1950. He then attended Case Western Reserve University Law School, graduating in 1952 and practiced law as a partner in the Akron law firm of Amer Cunningham Brennan Co., LPA.
During his years at the University of Akron, Joe was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and served as Chapter President in 1949. In 1958, he served as President of the University of Akron Alumni Association. He is a Past President of the University Club of Akron, a member of the Hilltoppers and was the 1994 recipient of the University of Akron Alumni honor award. He was also a member of Wendell L. Wilkie Post 19 of the American Legion.
Throughout his years of legal practice, he has actively served his profession as a member of the Akron, Ohio State and the American Bar Associations. In 1978 and 1979, he was President of the Akron Bar Association and in 1987 and 1988, served the Ohio State Bar Association as it's President. In 1991 he was the recipient of the prestigious Sir Thomas Moore Award.
Long active in Masonry, Mr. Cook was a member of Akron Lodge No. 83, Washington Chapter No. 25, Akron Council No. 80, Bethany Commandery No. 72 and the Valley of Akron Scottish Rite where he served as Commander-in-Chief in 1969. In 1978, he was honored by being made a 33 degree Mason. He was a Past Monarch of Yusef-Khan Grotto and was a member of Tadmor Temple Shrine, the Royal Order of Jesters and has been awarded the DeMolay Legion of Honor.
Mr. Cook is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joyce; daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Walt Keith of Akron, Susan and Jeffrey Dinitz of Hinesburg, Vt.; son and daughter-in-law, Joseph F. Jr. and Karen Cook of Wadsworth; grandchildren, Katie Keith, Michael, Amy and Tommy Dinitz and Carolyn Cook; brother and sister-in-law,
William and Natalie Cook; mother-in-law, Anne Chalfant; brother-in-law, Richard (Marjorie) Chalfant; cousin, Jim (Carol) Cook.

Margaret K. Costello, 77, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998.
She was born in Akron. She retired from Frantz Insurance and Realty in 1981, with 25 years service. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Costello was preceded in death by husbands, Harry V. Shoman in 1957 and Bernard M. Costello in 1975. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Lisa Shoman of Akron; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and David Alexander of Akron; brothers, Henry Liebmann of Pittsburgh, Pa., Joseph Liebmann of South Carolina; sister, Frieda Schoonover of Akron; and grandchildren, Brian Shoman and Katharine Alexander. Margaret was a vibrant, artistic woman whose talents took her many places. She believed that when you combined imagination, a willingness to try, determination, and hard work, you could accomplish almost anything. She devoted her life to her children and grandchildren and, until her recent illness, never missed a school or athletic function. She lived her life with dignity and grace in spite of adversity. She will be deeply missed by her family.

Joan (Clarke) Downing died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, in the loving presence of her entire family, after a long battle with cancer.
She was born in Cleveland on May 29, 1935, and had resided in Richfield and Akron over the past 27 years. She graduated from Cleveland Garfield High School in 1953 and earned a bachelor's degree in education from Bowling Green State University in 1957. She taught elementary school in Florida, then later in Garfield Heights, Ohio, and was very involved in the community and Faith Lutheran Church.
Joan is survived by husband, Bill Downing; daughters, Karen Gallaher and Diane Carano; son, Bill Downing Jr. She is also survived by her parents, John and Helen Clarke; brother, Dr. John F. Clarke Jr., all of Richfield, and leaves behind beloved grandchildren, Sarah and Brian Carano, and Megan Gallaher.

Robert M. Elias, 69, died Friday, February 27, 1998.
He was born in Barberton and was a businessman in the Akron, Barberton and Portage Lakes areas for 45 years. He was a member of St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church and the F.O.P.A. Mr. Elias was a veteran of the United States Armed Forces serving during the Korean Conflict. He was an avid sportsman who especially enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Preceded in death by mother and father, Rose and Leo (Eli) Elias, and sister, Betty Jacob, he is survived by wife of 44 years, Dolores of Akron; son, Robert G. of Akron; daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela and John Grabowsky and Susan and Allan Mellan, all of Akron; brothers, George and Norman both of Akron; sisters, Jerrie Elias of California and Eileen Hanna of Akron; and grandchildren, Jace and Laine Grabowsky.
