William E. Sagedy
William E. Sagedy, 78, passed away Thursday, April 2, 1998. Born in Paw Paw, W. Va., he retired from the Akron Beacon Journal in 1989 with 25 years service. He was a member of V.F.W. Post 3383, F.O.E. 190, and Graphic Commercial International Union. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in World War II, where he received a Purple Heart and one Oak Leaf Cluster. Mr. Sagedy is survived by wife, Elizabeth; son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Betty of Roanoke, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Monday, 11 a.m., at the Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Funeral Home, 95 W. Waterloo Rd., Rev. Howard Powell officiating. Interment at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Lawrence Frederick Sams
Lawrence Frederick Sams, 83, of Louisville, Ky., died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at Westminster Terrace in Louisville, Ky. He was born Sept. 21, 1914, in Cleveland, son of James D. Sams and Bertha V. (Jordan) Sams, both deceased. He retired as an engineer for B. F. Goodrich in Akron. He was a 70-year Boy Scout leader; he was on the Akron Boy Scout Council for 65 years and was on the Lincoln Heritage Council in Louisville, Ky. Survivors include his wife, Margaret (Moore) Sams of Louisville, Ky.; daughter, Shirley Carnes of Newark, Ohio; stepson, DeWayne Anderson of Newark, Ohio; stepdaughters, Janet Riggio of Toledo, Ohio, and Carmen Ellington of Louisville, Ky.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services Thursday, April 9, 1998, at 7 p.m., at the Criss-Kirkpatrick Funeral Chapel, 179 Granville St., Newark, Ohio; also, graveside services Friday, April 10, 1998, at 1 p.m., at Rose Hill Cemetery in Akron, where interment will take place. Karljon Savage
Karljon Savage died Sunday, April 5, 1998, due to complications from a brain tumor. A lifelong resident of Akron, he was born Aug. 2, 1944. Karl loved taking pictures of his family and friends, and had worked as a freelance photographer. He was preceded in death by his father, Ben Savage Sr.; and grandmother, Mary Radjes, and will be dearly missed by his mother, Mary; brother, Ben Savage Jr.; sister and brother-in-law, Sandy and Jim Conti; nephews, Benny III and Bobby; nieces, Kristen, Kerry, Katie, and Alicia (each was his favorite); constant companion, Abby; and many dear friends. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, April 15, at 7 p.m., at the Kucko-Anthony-Kertesz Funeral Home, Rev. Mr. Robin Adair officiating. Cremation has taken place. Mary E. Sbory
BARBERTON -- Mary E. Sbory, age 89, passed away April 10, 1998. She was born Nov. 15, 1908 in Barberton, and was a member of St. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church. Preceded in death by husband, Jack Sbory in 1992. Survived by sons, Joseph N. (Mary) Sbory of Florida, John M. (Norma) Sbory of Barberton; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-granddaughter; brother, George (Ellen) Plehn of Kenmore; numerous nieces and nephews. Mary E. (DeSario) Schlaker
Mary E. (Desario) Schlaker, 90, passed away April 1, 1998. She was born in Cleveland and was a lifelong resident of Akron. She was a member of St. Martha's Catholic Church and the Retirees & Widows of Akron Police Department Chapter 25, District 1. Preceded in death by husband, James E. Sr., she is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Lorene C. and Paul Capriulo of Akron; son and daughter-in-law, James E. Jr. and Ruth Schlaker of South Carolina; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Lucille Piazza of Connecticut; brother, Roxie DeSario of Akron; and many loving nieces, nephews, and friends. She left a legacy of unabiding love for all her friends and family. We grieve our loss, but rejoice that she has been lifted into eternal life and joy with God, Our Lord Jesus, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the many loved ones who are now embracing this wonderful woman. BARBERTON--Anna Schultheis, 83, died April 3, 1998 at her residence. She was born in Barberton where she was a life resident. She was employed with the Seiberling Latex Company and Gray Drug Store with 24 years service as a clerk in the pharmacy department, retiring 21 years ago. She was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, the Rosary Society, and The Greater Beneficial Union #361. She was preceded in death by husband, Frank C., she is survived by daughter, Mary Georgalis of Barberton; sister, Julia Rose of Barberton; nephew, Mike (Nancy) Firtha of Mogadore; niece, Amelia Scavone of Glendale, Calif.; great-nieces and nephews. Michael Sciortino, 74, died April 4. Doyle J. Frederick Scott
MUNROE FALLS -- Doyle J. Frederick Scott, 60, born Dec. 7, 1937, in Cullman, Ala., passed away after a long battle with bone cancer. He was a very compassionate and caring person, always striving for honesty and fairness. A 1955 graduate of Central Hower High School, he attended Akron University. He was self-employed with the Fred Scott Insurance Agency for 33 years and was racing director and instructor for the Akron Quarter Midget Racing Club. Mr. Scott was also a member and flight instructor for Corsair Model Airplane Club and was involved throughout the years with Little League. Preceded in death by mother, Nelly Winfred Scott, he is survived by his wife of 41 years, Monya; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy S. and Robert O. Myers of Stow; son, F. Kenneth James Selders, 51 of Mogadore passed away Tuesday, April 8, 1998 at Akron City Hospital. Mr. Selders was born Feb. 13, 1947 in Akron. He was employed by Lockheed-Martin with 30 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corp. Survivors include his loving wife of 30 years, Karen; daughter and son-in-law, Marla and Scott Flannagan; sons, Kenneth, Gary, Scott and Daniel Selders and Cathy Strater; sisters and brother-in-law, Bonnie Selders, Lawanna and Eugene Kosa; grandchildren, Ashley, Tamara and Timothy Selders, Victoria and Brent Flannagan. Harold L. Selman
Harold L. Selman, 74, passed away Monday, April 1, 1998. Mr. Selman retired from Mohawk Rubber. He was in the U. S. Navy during World War II and awarded the Bronze Star in 1944, on the SS Frederick C. Howe, and was a member of Canal Fulton V.F.W. Post 9795. He is survived by his wife, Anna; sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Linda Selman of Georgetown, Texas, Jeffrey and Vicky Selman of Canal Fulton; grandchildren, Nathan and Samantha Selman; sisters, Esther of St. Petersburg, Fla., Imogene of Grayson, La., Eileen of Georgia, Cecile of Concord, Ohio, and Margaret of Indiana. Mary R. Semer
Mary R. Semer, 77, of Akron died peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, April 4, 1998. She spend her life in service, raising nine children and working as a social worker for the Diocese of Cleveland. She was for many years the Director of Admissions for St. Edwards' Home in Fairlawn. Preceded in death by her husband, Charles Richard Sr., she is survived by children, Charles R. IV, George Craig, John Christof, Mark Joseph, Susan Buss, Mary C. Semer, Stephen, Anne Murphy, and Judith Gillick; sisters, Elizabeth Shumway of San Francisco, Calif., and Martha Bailey of Shreveport, La.; 15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mary O. ``Molly'' (Krill) Semonin, 87 years, of Akron, died March 30, 1998, at Akron General Medical Center after a long illness. Molly was a longtime member of St. Bernard Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a graduate of Akron City Hospital School of Nursing in 1932. Preceded in death by husband, Lloyd and granddaughter, Melissa, she is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Paul R. and Joyce of Wasilla, Alaska, Rev. Fr. James R. of Parma, William E. of Ft. Isaac Austin Serva, stillborn infant of John Michael and Jessica Lynn (Myrla) Serva, was born Saturday at the Alliance Community Hospital. Joyce A. Severance (Hill), 58, of Ellet, passed away March 28, 1998, at Hospice Care Center, after an eight-month battle with cancer. She was retired from Ohio Edison after 28 years service. William H. Shears, 54, died April 7, 1998. He was a life resident of the Barberton area, retired from Babcock & Wilcox, was a member of Eagles Lodge 555, and attended New Hope Chapel. Lillian Sheridan

Roy J. Shields
Roy J. Shields, 81, of Dunkirk, Md., died March 25 at Washington Hospital Center of a heart attack. Roy Shields was born in Lone Oak, Ky. The Shields family moved to Akron in 1926, where Roy was raised. He graduated from East High School in 1935 and worked at the Goodyear Rubber Co. In 1938, Roy moved to Annapolis, Md., where his twin brother, Ray, was working as a lifeguard at the Annapolis Roads Country Club. The brothers worked their way up to become co-managers of Annapolis Roads. Their plans to buy the club were interrupted by World War II. Roy Shields served in the Pacific as a supply sergeant with the 5th Air Force 2nd Air Service Squadron. After the war, the Shields brothers returned to Annapolis Roads to find the club in disrepair; within a short time they had Annapolis Roads in operation again. The Shields brothers operated Annapolis Roads Club from 1947 to 1962 and Glenn Dale Golf Club from 1958 to 1981. In 1969, Roy and Ray opened Twin Shields Golf Club on an old tobacco farm in Dunkirk, Md. Twin Shields was billed as a club for the average golfer. Mr. Shields was a member of the American Legion, the Elks, and the Maryland Republican Committee. He was also active in the 2nd Air Service Squadron, attending and contributing to trips and reunions. The widower of Lavina Wilson Shields, Roy is survived by daughters, Diane S. Smith of Davidsonville, Md., and Karen S. Keen of Dunkirk, Md.; son, Roy J. ``Jim'' Shields Jr. of New Orleans, La.; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of Margueritte Roarty of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Laneva Lessley of Akron.

Dr. R. Bruce Shriber
Dr. R. Bruce Shriber, retired dentist, 75, of Lithonia, Ga., died April 2, 1998, in Columbus, Ga., of pneumonia. Born in Akron, he graduated from Ohio State. He enjoyed bridge and was an avid golfer. Preceded in death by parents, Dr. Ralph E. (Doreen) Shriber; and daughter, Cindy, he is survived by wife, Louise; son, Burton (Lynne) Shriber; sisters, Betty Bramlett of Doylestown and Winnie (Milo) Wilson of Simeonton, Texas; brother, Ralph E. (Marilyn) Shriber Jr.; cousin, Dr. William (Rena) Shriber; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. A memorial service will be held later in Georgia. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Richard C. Simon
Richard C. Simon, 48, died peacefully Thursday, April 2, 1998, after a six-month courageous battle with cancer, at the Hospice at Riverside and Grant in Columbus. Formerly of Akron, Rick was a systems product engineer at Ingersoll-Dresser Pump Company in Memphis, Tenn. He is survived by children, Stacey and Emily Shepard, and Amanda and Christopher Simon; and by siblings, Jim (Nancy) Simon, Kimberly (Mark) Belzer, Sheree (Dale) Taylor, and Michael Simon; as well as good friend, Craig Schreiner; many loving nieces and a nephew, and many other relatives and friends. A memorial service is being planned at First Grace United Church of Christ, 350 S. Portage Path, on Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Jeff Rider will preside at the service. CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Robert G. Skidmore, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, went home to be with the Lord on March 27, 1998. Harold ``Jack'' Sowers
Harold ``Jack'' Sowers, 69, died Sunday, April 12, 1998. Born April 13, 1928, Jack was a lifetime resident of Akron. He worked in the service department at McIntyre Chevrolet and later retired as mechanic at Toth Buick. An auto racing enthusiast, in 1997 he was named a Life Member of the Ohio Modified Drivers Association. He had been a member of the Mission Church of Christ. Preceded in death by his first wife, Betty; and brother, James, he is survived by wife, Ruby; children, Laura Kroah, Jackie Riffle, and Linda Oxley, all of Akron, Carol Cole of Nevada, and Virginia Mook and Kenneth Oxley, both of Louisiana; sisters, Betty Nieman of West Virginia and Winifred Miljak of Akron; brother, Thomas of Medina; nine grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Dunn-Quigley Ciriello & Carr Fairlawn Chapel (39 S. Miller Rd.), where Pastor James Harding will officiate at services at 11 a.m. Thursday. Percy A. Spruill
Percy A. Spruill, 60, passed away April 11, 1998, at Akron General Medical Center, after a short illness. Born in Hines County, Miss., he had lived in this community for 20 years. He was employed as a truck driver for 10 years, retiring in 1985. He also was employed by Amco Parking System Morley Health Center. He is survived by his wife, Valerie; daughters, Vardrey Spruill of Taylor, S. C., and Valje (Elton) McDaniel of Akron; mother, Helen Carter; sister, Marland Sabree, both of Akron; grandchildren, Antavious Dendy of Taylor, S. C., and Adrianna Evans of Akron; stepsons, Lamont Evans of Dayton and Christopher Smith of Doylestown; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends. Lee Stalnaker
Lee Stalnaker, 68, passed away April 1, 1998. Mr. Stalnaker was born in Glenville, W. Va., on Dec. 23, 1929. He was a partner of D&L Construction and was a member of Manchester Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clark and Ruth Stalnaker; and brother, Glen; and is survived by his wife of 45 years, Eulalia; daughter, Evon (Bud) Reaume of Riverside, Calif.; son, Scott (Vickie) Stalnaker; sisters, Juanita (Robert) Bartschy and Eileen (Dale) Gaston; brother, William (Shirley) Stalnaker; sister-in-law, Pearl Stalnaker; seven grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; many loving nieces, nephews and friends. Kevin R. Starcher
WADSWORTH -- Kevin R. Starcher, 14, went home to be with the Lord after a courageous battle with leukemia. Kevin was born in Akron and was a lifelong resident of Wadsworth. He loved sports and fishing. Kevin is survived by parents, Kim and Jodi (nee LoParo); brothers, Adam of Great Lakes, Ill., Matthew of the residence; sister, Kimberly of the residence; grandmothers, Lorene ``Larry'' LoParo and Joan Starcher, both of Wadsworth; great-grandmother, Wanda Clark Miklos of Wadsworth. Rosemary A. Staubs, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away April 23, 1998. Rosemary was a lifelong resident of Akron. Rosemary is survived by her husband of 47 years, Omer; sister, Louise Teodosio; daughter, Beverly of Bradenton, Fla.; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Sara of Akron; son, James of Dallas, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Frank Leban of Columbia, Md.; seven grandchildren, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Delbert Cecil Stevens
Delbert Cecil Stevens, 74, of Cleveland, Ohio, died Wednesday, March 25, 1998, after an extended illness. He was born June 5, 1923, the son of the late Solomon and Frances Betts Stevens. His wife, Iwana Black Stevens, whom he married on Sept. 1, 1947, survives. Also surviving are daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Stanley Wick, Shelley and Richard Palmer, and Sharlene and David Miller; granddaughters, Sherry Chancey and Kristin Palmer; great-grandson, Steven Chancey; stepgrandchildren, Dawn Lake and Kurt Wick; and four stepgreat-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sister, Mrs. Olive Crawford. Mr. Stevens was a veteran of World War II, landing on Utah Beach with the 3207 Quartermaster Corps on D-Day, June 6, 1944. He lived in Cleveland for the last 51 years, where he worked for the Cleveland Frog and Crossing Co. before retiring. He was a member of the Broadway United Methodist Church in Cleveland. Funeral services were held March 29, 1998, in Grantsville, W. Va.

Julia ``Judy'' Ann Stith
Julia ``Judy'' Ann Stith, 33, of Brownsville, Texas, but formerly of Akron, died on April 4, 1998, in Santa Fe, N. M. Born in Ft. Dix, N. J., on June 14, 1964, she was raised in Akron before moving to Brownsville in 1972. She was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church in Brownsville, and the Brownsville Elks Lodge No. 1032. She is survived by husband, John Neumann; parents, Donald Richard Stith and Mary Helen Weaver-Stith; and brothers, Donald Michael Stith and William Joseph Stith, all of Brownsville; sisters, Clare Marie Hulama of Ft. Worth, Texas, Margaret Ann Garcia of Brownsville, Virginia Marie Stith of Austin, and Patricia Joe Stith of Brownsville; several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Catholic Church in Brownsville, Texas. Burial at Roselawn Memorial Garden. Everett Olof Streid, 82, died April 10, 1998. Born in Jamestown, N.Y., he had been a resident of Akron since 1919, and had retired as the owner of Nesmith Lake Glass Shop. Preceded in death by his sister, Ranghild L. Mercer; he is survived by his wife of 54 years, Velma I.; son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Judy of Florida; three grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; niece, Gail Mercer; niece and nephew, Barbara and John Hopkins; nephews, Ralph and Robert Shelton; great-nieces, Sue (Larry) Rutledge, and Sherrie Matz; great-great-niece, Melissa Matz. Shurley E. Stump
Shurley E. Stump, 78, of Wilsie, Braxton County, W. Va., died April 4, 1998, at home. He owned and operated Superior Welding Co. in Barberton for 18 years, retiring as a welder from Babcock & Wilcox Co. in Barberton in 1976, after 30 years. He served in the Army during World War II. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Marilyn Jennings Stump; daughter, Barbara Ann Naumoff of Orrville; sisters, Della Estep of Akron and Betty Kemp of Wheeling, W. Robert D. Sturm, 71, passed away March 31, 1998 at his residence. He was born January 2, 1927 the son of Luther and Chloie Sturm in Belington, W. Va. Mr. Sturm was a member of Akron Baptist Temple and was employed for 21 years with Gougler Ind. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Wilma; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and George Gaugler, Karen and Bob Ingersoll, Janet and Rick Grissom; sons and daughter-in-law, Bob Sturm Jr., David and Traci Sturm; sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Ken Curtis; brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Betty Sturm; grandchildren, Amy and Rebecca Gaugler, Ann and Jim Ingersoll, Rick, Jay and Russ Grissom, Julie and Steve Sturm, and Kayla, Zack and Shane Sturm; several nieces and nephews. Ryan T. Suhay
Ryan T. Suhay, beloved son of Gary and Cheryl Suhay; brother of Regan and Paige; and grandson of Paul and Colette Suhay, and Bert Chlebisch, died Monday morning, April 13, 1998. He was a senior at Revere High School and was to attend Virginia Tech University in the fall to pursue an aeronautical engineering degree. Ryan will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him. He brought much joy to his family. His smile and attitude brightened our lives. We are so thankful for having Ryan for 18 years. We will miss him, but know Ryan will always be with us.
