Lillian J. Carroll (nee Abbott)
A very lovely, personable lady left our midst April 24, 1998, after a long illness following open-heart surgery. To all her friends she was known simply as Doll. And that she was.
Lillian J. Carroll, an Akron native, and world traveler, lost her battle with pneumonia following open-heart surgery performed at St. Joseph's Hospital in Savannah, Ga.
Doll spent her whole life befriending people here and abroad. Doing little things that meant so much to everyone with whom she came in contact. A newspaper clipping here to a budding athlete; a poem there to a sick person. And a kind word to everyone she met, regardless of social status. She was one of a kind in that respect. Nothing she did for others was done with personal gain in mind.
Doll grew up in the shadows of the Goodyear clock tower. She graduated from East High. Her grandfather, Russ Slocum, was superintendent of Goodyear Hall for years. Her father, Royal Abbott, was one of Goodyear's original creators of Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade balloons. Her husband of 56 years, Paul Carroll, was marketing director for Goodyear International Corp.
Until she married, she worked as a hair stylist for an exclusive beauty salon in downtown Akron. Her clientele consisted mainly of fashionable west Akron women.
Although a white-knuckle flier, by her own definition, she traveled overseas extensively. Along with her many trips abroad to the Caribbean and Latin America were 25 trips to Europe. For a number of years she and her husband lived in their villa in Neuva Andalucia, Spain. During the past 15 years she wintered at Shelter Cove, Hilton Head Island.
She is survived by her husband; children, Lynn Carroll of Ortonville, Mich., Jan Hunt of Akron, and Michael Carroll of Rye, N. Y. She leaves grandsons, James and Sean Hunt of Akron, and Michael Carroll of Grosse Point Park, Mich.
As many of her closest friends remembered her, ``She was a person of simple tastes, first class!''
She will be missed by her many friends.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. TODAY at Dunn-Quigley, Ciriello & Carr Fairlawn Chapel, 39 S. Miller Rd. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday at St. Hilary Catholic Church. Entombment at Rose Hill Burial Park. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
