BARBERTON -- Anna Makarenko, 102, died Feb. 20, 1998, at Manor Care of Barberton.
She was born in Ukrania and resided in Barberton for the last 50 years. She was a member of the Slovene Pensioners Club.
She is survived by daughters, Violet (Roy) Reynolds of Birmingham, Ala., Lili (Andy) Valovcik of Barberton; four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Barbara W. Mangino
Barbara W. Mangino, 79, died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Robinson Memorial Hospital, Ravenna, Ohio.
She lived in Streetsboro the past 40 years and retired as assistant librarian at North Branch Library in Akron.
Survivors include her husband, William Sr.; son, William Jr. of Streetsboro; sisters, Joann Kurlock of Jackson, Mich., and Maraway Lingenfelter of Brooklyn, Mich.

Sarah M. Markwood
Sarah M. Markwood, 87, died Feb. 26, 1998.
Mrs. Markwood retired in 1971 from the Ohio Bell Telephone Co. as a long-distance operator, with 25 years service. She was born in Belington, W. Va., lived in the Akron area since 1932, and was a member of the Firestone Park United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Loyal W.; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley A. and Jack Gron of Tallmadge; son and daughter-in-law, Daniel L. and Andrea Markwood of Akron; grandchildren, Kim Carlson, Mike Gron, Erika and Brian Thornburg, and Victoria Markwood; and great-grandchildren, Nichole and David Carlson.

Ruth May Marrott
SILVER LAKE -- Ruth May Marrott, 97, died Feb. 19, 1998.
Mrs. Marrott was born in Akron and was a longtime resident of Silver Lake and Cuyahoga Falls. She had worked as a legal secretary for Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, and was a life member of American Legion Charles Faust Post 281 Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Harold Sr., and is survived by her son, C. Harold Jr., and nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at the Northlawn Memorial Gardens Chapel, Rev. Judith Christensen officiating.

William C. Martell
William C. Martell, 63, of North Canton, passed away Wednesday afternoon at Akron General Hospital, after a truly courageous battle with cancer.
He graduated from Tallmadge High School in 1952 and attended Kent State University. He had owned Tower Terrace Retirement Village in North Canton for 26 years. Bill was also the past owner of Martell Trailer Sales and Ellet Heights in Akron, past multi-year president of Ohio Manufactured Housing Association, and president of his Bob-O-Link golf league. He was also a member of the North Canton Elks 2029, and he attended Community Christian Church.
He is survived by his adored wife of 43 years (Lois) Jeanne (Brady) of the home; his much-loved children and grandchildren, daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Dave Skaggs of North Canton, Missy and Denny Simon of Canton; son and daughter-in-law, Marla and Mike Martell of North Canton; grandchildren, Jennifer and Amanda Skaggs, and Billy Martell, all of North Canton; brothers, Ronald of Akron, Donald of Kent, and Floyd of Naples, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents, Verne and Elizabeth; and brother, Mike.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Karlo & Sons Funeral Home, with Rev. Ronald Irons officiating. Burial will be at North Lawn Cemetery. His family thanks him for the lifetime of wonderful memories. Bill made every day beautiful for us and he will be missed dearly.

Ralph D. Mathias
Ralph D. Mathias, 65, passed away in Mesa, Ariz., on Feb. 15, 1998.
Ralph was born in Akron, the son of Russell and Mary Jane Mathias. Mr. Mathias was a veteran of the Korean War in the U. S. Navy. He retired from the N.S. Railroad after 33 years of service. He was active in many clubs, the Open Road Camping Club, Metal Detecting Club, Wadsworth Hunt Club, and was also an avid wood carver.
Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Penny; sons and daughter-in-law, Russ Mathias, and Bob and Debbie Mathias; grandchildren, Billy Williamson, Rachel Mathias, and Renee Mathias; sister, Lois Warjon. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the FARLEY FUNERAL HOME, 131 N. Canton Rd. at Gilchrist Road. Virginia E. Maynord, of Norton, passed away at Barberton Skilled Nursing Home after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Queen Shoales, West Virginia and had lived in the Akron, Barberton and Norton area since 1943.
She leaves her daughter, Linda Osborne of Clendenin, West Virginia; sister, Corrinne Bates of Akron, Lynette Campanale of Norwalk, California, Christine Lee and Rosemary (Norm) Moore of Barberton; brothers, William C. (Ruth) Carter of Tazwell, Virginia and Irwin (Jean) Carter of Barberton.

Edna M. Messersmith
Edna M. Messersmith, 86, formerly of Wolcott Avenue and Silver Oaks, died Thursday at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna.
She was born March 8, 1911, in Kent, to Glenn and Gertrude (Kruger) Moyer. She had been a resident of Colonial Gardens Nursing Home for the last four years.
She led a very active life. She had headed the Mothers March on Polio, and was a member of the Portage County Board of Mental Retardation of Happy Day School, T.B. Association of Portage County, the Mother's Singers of Kent, the Women's Club, where she had been past president and had just received her 50-year pin, the PTA for Depeyster School, Central School, and Kent Roosevelt High School, and president of PTAs. She and her husband were one of the five founding families of Faith Lutheran Church, where she still is a member and a member of the Guild.
Survivors include her son, Robert (Geri) of Riverside, Calif.; daughters, Donna (Joe) Creary of Kent and Judith (David) Kunka of Brimfield; daughter-in-law, Betty June Messersmith of Akron; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Mary Messersmith of Columbiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, in 1988; by son, Richard Messersmith, in 1997; and by brother, James E. Moyer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Faith Lutheran Church, with Paster George W. Gaiser, Pastor Arthur Ziegler, and Pastor Rudy Sandmann officiating. Emil ``Doc'' Meyer
Emil ``Doc'' Meyer, 71, of Freeport, formerly of Akron died at his home Thursday, Feb. 26, 1998.
Born in Nebraska on October 17, 1926, he was a son of Alice Dennison of Salt Lake City, Utah.
In 1966 he retired after serving 22 years with the United States Navy. He retired in 1989 from Co-op Optical, Akron where he was an optician for 23 years.
Surviving are his wife, Arlene Tillett Meyer; four daughters, Viki Meyer of Canal Fulton, Renee Overholt of Massillon, Michelle Meyer of Nashville, Tenn., and Lori Stanley of Piedmont; a son, Vaughn Meyer of McKeesport, Pa.; a sister; three brothers; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son and a brother.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, March 2, 1998 in Smyrna United Methodist Church. Burial and military services will follow in Greenmont Union Cemetery, Freeport. There will be viewing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church prior to the service.

Eleanor Hutson Miller
NORTON -- Eleanor Hutson Miller, 78, died Feb. 16, 1998, at her residence.
She was born in Barberton and was a life resident of the Barberton-Norton area, and employed with the P.P.G. Chemical Co. She was a member of Lakeview United Methodist Church of Barberton, Chi Omega Sorority of Ohio University, was a lifetime member of the Akron Woman's City Club, Tuesday Musical Club, and was a volunteer with United Cerebral Palsy Services.
She is survived by husband, Robert L.; son and daughter-in-law, Robert Miller Jr. and Victoria Choy of Washington, D.C.; and granddaughter, Alexis Miller.

John P. Miller
LAKEMORE -- John P. Miller, 76, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 19, 1998.
Born in Holly Grove, W. Va., he was a life resident of the Akron area. Mr. Miller retired from the Springfield Local School District in 1983 after 16 years of service. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II, and was an avid outdoorsman. A loving husband and devoted father and grandfather, he will be sadly missed by all, especially by his grandchildren who knew him as ``Bald.''
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Martha; sons and daughters-in-law, John K. and Geraldine of Herndon, Va., Carl Ralph and Betty of Buckhannon, W. Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie and Steve Goodspeed of Lakemore; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; stepmother, Doris Lough; brother, Gary Lee Miller; sisters, Patty June Sutton, Pearl Ruth Gillum, Norma Jean Groves, Anna Rose McAllister, and Mayme Whitehair; and many other family members.
