John R. Vance Sr.
STOW -- John R. Vance Sr., 60, died Monday, April 20, 1998. Born in Richlands, Va., he was retired from the Painters Union Local 841. He was preceded in death by his mother, Lydia, and is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters and sons-in-law, Kim Ayers (Ted) of Medina, Shelly Patterson (Tom) of Cuyahoga Falls, Joanne Keaton (Bill) of Kentucky, Roni Elliott (Jack) of Wadsworth; son, John Jr.; stepdaughter, Pam Shumway of Kent; 10 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; father, Charles Whited; and very dear friends, Andy and Lynn Karamas. Lois M. Van Deventer
DOYLESTOWN -- Lois M. Van Deventer, 83, died April 18, 1998, at Hospice Care Center. She was a resident of Doylestown since 1946, a 50-year member of the Doylestown United Methodist Church, and served as chairman for many years of the Missionary Committee. She attended the University of Syracuse, was a graduate of The University of Akron, and a member of Delta Gamma sorority. She was a retired teacher from the Chippewa Local Schools with 20 years service, and was a member of O.R.T.A., the Book Club, a 50-year member of the Fellowship Forum Club, and a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She loved gardening, music, camping, golf, swimming, and the outdoors. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Robert E.; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Elaine of Placentia, Calif., Jim and Joan of Norton, and Bruce and Kathy of Santee, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Charles Castello of Doylestown, and Vickie and Wes Snyder of Missoula, Mont.; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernice Williams of Syracuse, N.Y., Marion Smith of Delaware, Ohio, and Floss Best of Tiffin. Funeral service Wednesday, 11 a.m. at the Zak-Monbarren Funeral Home in Doylestown, Dr. David Tenant officiating. Burial at Chestnut Hill Cemetery. Elizabeth Vaughn
Elizabeth Vaughn, 78, passed away April 19, 1998, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was born in Pike County, Ga., and had lived as a resident of Cleveland for 16 years. She is survived by two daughters, five sons, one sister, one brother, 17 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends. Robert F. Waggoner
Robert F. Waggoner, 78, passed away April 14, 1998, at Hospice Care Center. Bob was a member of Pilgrim United Church of Christ, Henry Perkins Lodge, and Yusef Khan Grotto. He graduated from Buchtel High School, Akron University, and earned his masters degree in social work at Case Western Reserve. Bob served in World War II as a flight navigation instructor. He was manager of Acme Billiard & Bowling Supply at Midway Lanes--after retiring twice, he continued to work part time until a glioblastoma forced him to go on sick leave, eventually being the cause of his death. Preceded in death by his parents, John Waggoner and Marion Bair Waggoner; and his wife, Kathryn Kriegbaum Waggoner, Bob is survived by his beloved, Audrey Crain; daughters and son-in-law, Dr. Patricia and Brian Woodside; and grandchildren, Megan, Daniel, and Matthew Hungerman, Susan Clements and Sam Clements, and grandchildren, Nicholas, Zachary, and Kathryn Clements. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 1998, at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Stephanie Beidler-Bikel officiating. Donald G. Walder
STERLING -- Donald G. Walder, 73, died April 18, 1998, at Wooster Community Hospital. He was born in Cissna Park, Ill., and lived in Sterling since 1954. He owned and operated the W. G. Dairy Supply in Creston since 1964. He was a member of the Wayne County Farm Bureau, and the Rittman Apostolic Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, Martha; daughters, Sharon Rupp of Seville, Marian Stoller and Donna Gasser of Rittman, Lois Gasser and Joanne Stoller of Creston, and Arliss Pamer of Norton; 25 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter; brothers, Melvin, Lester, Dale, and Robert, all of Illinois; sisters, Deloris Maibach of Rittman and Lillian Maibach of Wooster. Services Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. at the Rittman Apostolic Christian Church, with burial at the Apostolic Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday at Gillman Funeral Home in Rittman, and one hour before service at the church. Kenneth W. Walters
Kenneth W. Walters, 40, of Craig Beach Village, passed away Monday, April 13. He was employed at Tech-Link and was on assignment at Danielli-Wean in Austintown, Ohio. He was the husband of Victoria ``Vickey'' (Klink); son of Clifford and Lois of Kent; father of Ross, Joseph, and William; and brother of Mary Kay of Florida. Friends will be received Thursday, 7 to 9 p.m., at the Shorts Funeral Home, Ravenna Chapel, where services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. Private burial will be held at a later date. Sophie Warner
Sophie Warner, 92, passed away March 31 in Bradenton, Fla. She was born March 5, 1906, in Latrobe, Pa. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Frank M. Warner of Barberton; sister, Ann Nast of Absecon, N. J.; brothers, Michael Curtis of North Hollywood, Calif., and D. Cvetich of Backa Palanka, Yugoslavia. She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Valerie and Robert English of Richardson, Texas; son, Robert Warner of Clinton; nephew, Nick Hannison (Eleanor) of Warren; and other nieces and nephews. Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at St. Mary's Church, 122 21st St., Barberton, on Saturday, April 25, at 9:30 a.m.

Henry Weiler Jr.
FLORIDA -- Henry Weiler Jr., 81, of Delray Beach, Fla., born April 13, 1917, in Akron, died April 15, 1998, in Sunrise, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Janice, four children and a sister, Betty Olinger of Uniontown, and was preceded in death by sister, Kate Hoffman, also of Uniontown. A memorial service was held at his church in Delray Beach, Fla.

Naomi Delvina Westerberg
Naomi Delvina Westerberg, a 60-year resident of Akron, departed to heaven on Feb. 17 in North Richland Hills, Texas. ``Gigi,'' as she was affectionately called, celebrated her 100th birthday in June 1997 in Keller, Texas, surrounded by family and friends. She received a congratulatory letter from President and Mrs. Clinton. Over her lifetime, she belonged to the D of A, the Army & Navy Union, Moose, Eagles, etc. She was a soloist in Akron for many years. Preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Oscar F. Westerberg; daughters, Delores and Lillian; son, Robert; grandsons, Robert Charles Westerberg and Dante Cotrufo; she is survived by her beloved daughter, Jeanne Cotrufo; granddaughters, Dianne (James) Reder and Patty (Robert) Ackles; great-granddaughters, Kim Carpenter and Jennifer Bromley, Lori Cotrufo, Lindsey and Kelly Ackles; grandson, Nick V. Cotrufo; great-grandsons, Chris Reder, Brian Reder, Michael Cotrufo, and Nicky Cotrufo Jr.; great-great-grandsons, Jeffrey A. Carpenter Jr. and Ian R. Bromley; sister, Faye Burns; many nieces, nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 2, at 7 p.m., at Springfield Baptist Church on Krumroy Road for all those who would like to attend. In lieu of flowers, tributes may be sent to the church in her memory.

Martha A. Whitehair
Martha A. Whitehair, 74, of Elizabeth, W. Va., died Friday, April 24, from a long illness. She was born in Harrison County, the daughter of the late Thomas Doyle and Eliza Jane Smith Ash. She was a member of the Big Island Run Methodist Church. Surviving are son, Johnny Whitehair of Clinton; brother, Elvin Ash of Kingwood, W. Va.; sisters, Betty Goff and Hazel Hutchinson of Elizabeth, W. Va., Vonda Nichols, Sylvia Sabol, Freda Delucia, all of Rochester, Pa., Wilma Jean Maze of Akron, Audra Dewitt of Coraopolis, Pa.; grandchildren, Michelle Horton, Kimberly Wallace, Michael Whitehair, Denton Bell, and Kayla Bell; great-grandchildren, Elysa Horton and Julia Horton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Whitehair; son, Raymond; stepdaughter, Wendi Bell; sisters, Laura Porto and Bertha Joy; brothers, Alfred Ash and Archie Ash. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Matheny Pomroy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dean Ash officiating. Burial will be at the Pine Twist Cemetery. Quitman White
TENNESSEE -- Quitman White, born Jan. 30, 1921, died April 11, 1998, in Nashville, Tenn. He had been employed for many years by Goodwill in Akron. Preceded in death by wife, Julia, he leaves nephews, Ronald (Debbie) Martin, Ralph Martin, both of Akron, and Coy White of Nashville; nieces, Betty (Arthur) Hastings and Gladys Montgomery. Funeral services have taken place.

Thomas B. P. Williams
Thomas B. P. Williams, 97, died April 14, 1998. Preceded in death by his wife, Eugenie, he is survived by his son, William of Akron. A private graveside service will be held Friday. Clara A. Winland passed away April 26, 1998. Born in Belmont County, Ohio, she is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and great-great-nieces and -nephews. James D. Wood
James D. Wood, 65, died April 28, 1998 after a brief illness. Born in New Brighton, Pa. He lived most of his life in Hudson. He attended Penn State University and was a graduate of the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. He served in the army during the Korean Conflict. He retired as Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Alsco Anaconda. At the time of his death he was a Manufacturers Representative with Parco Sales. He was a Mason, Past Officer of the National Association of the Remodelers Industry, member of the Homebuilders Association of Akron, the Elks Club, American Legion and was active in the Hudson Boosters. Preceded in death by his father, Stewart Wood of New Brighton, he is survived by his wife of 40 years, Maureen (Hart) Wood; daughter and son-in-law, John and Colleen Norris of Chicago; son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Kim Wood of Hudson, son and daughter-in-law, Patrick and Karen Wood of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren, Tyler, Erin and Travis Wood of Hudson, Marieke and Courtney Wood of Charlotte; his mother, Evelyn Wood of New Brighton; sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Rick Zinser of New Brighton; brother, Jerry Wood of Florida; and aunt, Marian Joy of New Brighton, Pa., as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Memorial services will be held Friday, May 1, 1998 at 11 a.m. at The Evangelical Covenant Church of Hudson, 190 W. Streetsboro Road, Hudson, Ohio. Olive Florence Darrah Wyckoff (Bearden, Chaboudy, Kubicek)
A longtime resident of Monroe Falls and Peninsula, Olive Darrah lived a full life as wife, mother, and restaurant owner. Born in Suffield Township on Oct. 20, 1907, to Harry Edison Darrah and Florence Mary Hale Darrah of Mogadore, she raised for children and was widowed three times in the ensuing 90 years. Olive was a member of the Eastern Star, a descendant of the Mayflower forefathers, Daughters of the American Revolution, and was active in local bowling leagues in and around the Hudson-Peninsula area. With her husband, the late Joseph Kubicek, she owned the Virginia Kendall Restaurant in the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. Most recently, Olive lived at Rest Haven Life Center near her son in Louisiana until her death on Dec. 3, 1997. She is survived by sons, Dr. Norman Gene Bearden of Jackson, Ala., Robert Bernard Chaboudy of Franklinton, La., and U. S. Army LTC (Ret.) Carl Harry (Butch) Chaboudy of Herndon, Va. She was predeceased by her daughter, Mrs. Barbara Ann Coram. Other surviving relatives include nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. On April 25, 1998, her ashes will be interred during a graveside service to be held at Rose Hill Cemetery in Akron at 10:30 a.m., and followed by family and friends gathering at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls. Steve Yurko Jr.
BARBERTON -- Steve Yurko Jr., 70, died April 28, 1998, at Barberton Citizens Hospital. He was born in Barberton, where he was a life resident. Steve was employed by the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., retiring in 1990 after 43 years of service. He was a life member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, also treasurer of Holy Name Society, Knights of Columbus Council 1617, Independent Order of Foresters, and Army-Navy 102. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving with the U. S. Army. Preceded in death by parents, Steve Sr. and Katherine, he is survived by wife, Helen; daughter, Paula Jean Yurko of Seattle, Wash.; sister-in-law, Catherine Stacey; brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Patricia Shemuga, Daniel and Stephanie Shemuga; numerous nieces and nephews. Steve will be sadly missed by his family, friends, and church which he so avidly supported. Funeral services will be Friday, 9:30 a.m., at the Hahn Funeral Home, with Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Msgr. Robert Yarnovitz, celebrant, Fr. Bernard Danber, con-celebrant. Interment at St. Nicholas Cemetery. Joan Zimmer
Joan Zimmer, 67, of West Salem, died April 24, 1998, at the Cleveland Clinic. She was born in Pleasant Hill, Tenn., on Jan. 5, 1931, to Stanley and Mabel (Dixon) Elmore Foutty. She was owner and operator of Joan's Beauty Shop in Akron. She is survived by her husband, Frank Zimmer, whom she married in 1946; daughter, Judy Zimmer of California; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Eileen Foutty of Canal Fulton; stepsister, Donna Myers of Canal Fulton; and many friends, nieces and nephews.
