Willie Gabriel Gable
Willie Gabriel Gable, 72, passed away May 6, 1998, at Hospice Care Center, after a long illness. Born in Parkin, Ark., he had lived in this community 54 years. He had been employed as a rubber worker at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., last working in 1979. He was a member of Peoples Baptist Church, serving on the Usher Board. He is survived by wife; Ada Gable; sons; James (Mary) Hicks, Dennis, Willie Jr., Robert, Joseph, Donnell Gable; devoted daughter, Brenda Gable, all of Akron; 22 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; aunt, Gussie May Taylor of Atville, Ala.; a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 1998, at Peoples Baptist Church, with Rev. George Goodman officiating. Interment at Glendale Cemetery. Steven A. Gardner
Steven A. Gardner, 38, died unexpectedly April 28, 1998. An area resident all his life, he graduated from Kenmore High School in 1978, and owned Steve Gardner Construction Co. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Purple Heart Hunting and Fishing Club. He is survived by parents, Bill and Pauline Gardner; sister, Judy (Jim) Gardner-Gifford of Akron; brothers, Mark (Penny), Dave of Akron, and Jeff (Judy) of Brimfield; soulmate, Sherrie Lee Cox and Jake; nieces and nephews. Cliff D. Gasbarro, 18, died Friday, May 1, 1998. A graduate of De Sales High School, he attended DeVry. He was a member of St. James The Less. John J. Gasbarro
John J. Gasbarro, 77, of Cuyahoga Falls, passed away suddenly Thursday, April 30, 1998. Mr. Gasbarro was born in Akron on June 20, 1920. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army Air Corps. His memberships included the Castel DiSangro Society, Paradise Club, Senior All-star Travel, and numerous bowling leagues in the past. He retired in 1981 from Goodyear Aerospace Corp. in the maintenance department, after 30 years. John was such a thoughtful and caring person to his family and the many, many friendships he made through the years. He was a buddy to all who knew him. John will be dearly missed by all his family and friends, and many will remember him as ``Johnny Cakes.'' John's biggest enjoyment in life was being involved in sports, particularly baseball, and especially bowling. He was an avid and high-game bowler, even on the day he became ill. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Antonietta; brother, Louie; brother-in-law, Frank Antonino; and niece, Mary Leonard. He is survived by his sisters, Delia Antonino of Akron, Lucy (Steve) Flasco of Akron, Mary (Phil) Campanale of Brimfield, Gloria (Richard) Leonard of Akron; sister-in-law, Alice Gasbarro of Hudson; brother, Alfred Jr. (Dorothy) Gasbarro of Cuyahoga Falls; also many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday, May 4, 1998, at 9:30 a.m., at the Hennessy-Bagnoli Funeral Home, 936 N. Main St., Akron. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Frank Gerstheimer, 85, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 1998. He retired with 31 years of service with Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. He is survived by his wife, Erna; daughters, Betty (Larry) Larison, Dorothy (Bill) Atkinson, all of Arizona; sisters, Katherine (Donald) Cordy of Uniontown, Helen (Chet) King of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Dempsey V. Golden, Sr.
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Dempsey V. Golden, Sr., 71, died May 1, 1998. Mr. Golden was born in Buckhannon, W. Va., and resided in Cuyahoga Falls since 1943, moving there from W. Virginia. He had worked as a tool and die maker for Colonial Machine and Hunt Machine Co., and was a vetearn of World War II serving with the U.s. Navy. He is survived by several children, grandchildren and siblings; his loving companion of 25 years, Ruth Russell and special niece, Gloria Harr. Richard L. Goldsmith
Richard L. Goldsmith, 82, died May 14, 1998. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna; and his brother, Robert. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Linda Goldsmith; grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Nash (Jason), Jill and Rick of Fairlawn; daughter, Diane Goldsmith of San Antonio, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Tina Goldsmith; grandchildren, Aaron, Meagan, and Emily of Canton, Mich.; and daughter and son-in-law, Dede and Steve Moreck; grandchildren, Keith and Kristin of Eugene, Ore. Dick was president of the J. Koch Co., a quality men's clothing store, and operated it with his brother, Robert, until it was sold in 1972. Born in Akron, he attended Akron University, and worked as a warehouse foreman at B. F. Goodrich before graduating from Kent State University in 1938. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II. After the war, he worked at Koch's and became an active member of Rotary, the Akron Merchants Association, Akron City Club, and the Silver Lake Country Club. While he could not reconcile himself to life's injustices, he did enjoy life to the fullest as an avid golfer and poker and bridge player, and truly appreciated being around his friends and family. There will be no calling hours or open services. He directs you to enjoy and appreciate your life. Marvin Grant, 65, passed away April 27, 1998, in Oglethorpe, Ga. Betty Lou Gray
Betty Lou Gray, age 64, of Akron, died Sunday, May 10, 1998. She was born Nov. 21, 1933, to the late Ralph ``Skinny'' and Margaret (Allison) Elliott. She worked for Ohio Bell, retiring in 1996. Surviving are an uncle, several cousins and many close friends. Graveside service will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Oak Hill Cemetery in Millersburg, Ohio, with Rev. Karl Stonebraker officiating. Jane M. Green
Jane M. Green, 81 years, of Akron, died May 17, 1998 at her residence after a short illness. Born in Akron, she was an area resident most of her life. Jane was a graduate of St. Vincent High School, a former member of St. Vincent Church and presently a member of St. Matthews Church. She and her late husband, F. G. (Joe) Green were former owners of Maca Swim Park in Tallmadge. Survivors include her daughters and their spouses, Lynne and John Loewing of Shakopee, Minn., Nancy Hiner of Portage Lakes, Valerie Taylor of Greenville, S.C., and Mary Ellen and Tim Neitz of Cuyahoga Falls; sister, Mary Murty of Akron; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. NORTON -- Edith Belle (Webb) Griffin, 81, passed away May 12, 1998, at the Hospice Care Center in Akron. Edith was born in Rush, W. Va., on Sept. 22, 1916. She was a member of Rittman Baptist Church, Twinbrook Garden Club, and the Norton Democratic Club. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Rex; sons, Roland Griffin of Olive Branch, Miss., Gary (Cynthia) Griffin of Dousman, Wis.; daughter, Diane (Daniel) Shook of Potomac, Md.; brothers, Orliss (Helen) Webb, Harold (Mildred) Webb; sisters, Orva Miller and Hester Starcher; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Milton G. Griffin (Ace), 50, passed away May 10, 1998, at the residence. He was born in Akron and had lived in this community all of his life. He was an interior/exterior painter, a member of Elks Lodge Pride of Rubbertown, and an Army veteran. Martha Jane Griffiths (nee Holm)
CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Martha Jane Griffiths (nee Holm), 78, passed away April 30, 1998. Mrs. Griffiths was born in Akron and had resided in Cuyahoga Falls most of her life. She had been a school teacher for the Cuyahoga Falls Board of Education, retiring in 1990, spending most of her career teaching at Lincoln Elementary. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Cuyahoga Falls, its Wesley Sunday School Class, and the Wesleyan Circle. She was a January 1938 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School, a graduate of Kent State University, and a member of Kappa Kappa Iota Professional Teachers Sorority. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack F. and sister, Julia Lowe, and is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Alan and Gretchen of Wooster, John and Margaret of Rochester, N.Y., Charles and Diane of Cuyahoga Falls; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Wayne Schuman of Forest City, Ark.; grandchildren, Edward (Lisa), Jeffrey (Taema), Julia, Tracy and Matthew; sister and brother-in-law, Alice and Doran Hammack of Cuyahoga Falls; sister, Miriam Smetts of Stow; and brother-in-law, Eugene Lowe of Jefferson, Ohio. SHARON TWP. -- Irene Mae Bird Grindle, born June 4, 1916, died May 1, 1998, of cancer, at Copley Health Center, after a two-month illness. Mrs. Grindle graduated from Sharon School and the University of Akron in education. She taught school at Isham in Wadsworth, Highland in Sharon, and later at Sherman School District in Norton before retiring. She was an active member of Fairlawn Lutheran Women's Guild, Braille Work Center no. 191, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, and Tuesday Bible Class. Mrs. Grindle was preceded in death by parents, Edward and Hazel Nimon Bird; husband, Albert; and grandson, James Albert Hazen. Miss Kathryn Gurella (nee Gurella)
WARREN, ATWATER TWP. -- Miss Kathryn Gurella, age 81, of Atwater, died Thursday, April 30, 1998, at Autumn Hills Nursing Home, Niles, Ohio, after a short illness. She was born March 22, 1917, in Akron, to the late John Gurella and Mary Buchak Gurella, and was a resident of Warren since 1993. She was employed by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. in Akron for 37 years. Survivors include sister, Josephine J. Clagett of Niles, Ohio, two nieces, two nephews, 10 great-nieces and -nephews. She was preceded in death by sister, Mrs. Mary Gardner. Funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, May 1 at the Robert H. Roberts-Clark Memorial Home, Warren. Interment at East Akron Cemetery, May 1, 1998.
