Joseph C. Baglia Sr., 67, died June 15, 1998. Born in Akron, he had lived in the Hiram and Akron areas most of his life and was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Rosemarie Baglia of Houston, Texas, Donna Marie (Robert) Bolt of Arlington, Texas; sons, Joseph (Catherine) Baglia Jr. of Jupiter, Fla., David (Nancy) Baglia of Stow; grandchildren, Amber Marie D'Alessio, Brandon Alexander Baglia, Travis Allen Baglia, Angela Marie Baglia, Andrew August Baglia; and three sisters. Genevieve S. Barta, 80, a resident of Akron until 1992, passed away at Franklin Health Care Center in Virginia on May 30, 1998. Preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Charles Barta, she is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth Makinson of Henry, Va.; son, Charles Barta of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; grandchildren, Charlotte Quinn of Ferrum, Va., Cindy Apple of Asheville, N.C., Dick and Ken Makinson, both of Tucson, Ariz.; nine great-grandchildren. Elijah V. Bartee
Elijah Vickers Bartee ``Booty Green,'' 45, passed away May 26, 1998, at Akron General Medical Center. Born in Barberton, he had lived in the Akron area. Preceded in death by parents, Elie Vickers Sr. and Katie Bartee, he is survived by sons, Michael Jones, Daniel and Anthony Mayfield; daughter, Chandler Hall; three grandchildren; mother, Louise Vickers; 10 brothers, 12 sisters, a host of other relatives and friends. Maggie Bates, 96, went home to be with the Lord at Bridgepark Nursing Home. Born in Monroe, Louisiana, she lived in this community for over a year. She was a member of St. James Baptist Church in Shelby, Mississippi. Maggie is survived by devoted daughters, Jessie Clay of Akron, Ossie Tucker of Columbus, Ruthie Brittian of Shelby, Miss.; loving grandchildren, great-granchildren, great-great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends. Fletcher Roosevelt Battle
Fletcher Roosevelt Battle, 96, passed away May 31, 1998, at Ridge Place Nursing Home. Born in Union Springs, Ala., he had lived in this community since 1925. He was employed by B. F. Goodrich for 37 years, retiring in 1962. He was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church and Phoenix Lodge 112. Fletcher was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Hattie. Fletcher is survived by his brothers, Johnny Battle of Fairfield, Ala., and Silas (Loretta) Battle of Louisville, Ky.; a mulitude of cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives to the fourth generation; and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, Rev. William Bunton officiating. Interment at Mount Peace Cemetery. Howard E. Baughman
Howard E. Baughman, 73, formerly of Akron, went home to be with the Lord on June 10, 1998, in California, where he resided the last 20 years. Mr. Baughman retired from Firestone after 34 years service and served in the Coast Guard during World War II. He was a member of Goss Memorial Church and attended Faith Bible Fellowship in California. He is survived by his wife, Bette; sons, James Baughman and David Magenau; daughter, Kathleen Schmitt; brothers, Elmer, John and Tom Baughman; sister, Irene Benson; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ralph T. Bechter
Ralph T. Bechter, 68, passed away Saturday, June 27, 1998. He was born October 31, 1929, in Akron, Ohio. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and was a United States Army veteran. Mr. Bechter was an avid golfer, playing at most area golf courses. He retired from The Diamond Foundry after 30 years of service. Preceded in death by parents, Charles and Minnie Bechter and brothers, Robert and Charles Bechter, he is survived by his wife, Rose; son, Jeff of New Port Richey, Fla.; daughter, Diane and grandson, J.D. of Akron; sisters, Mary Harvey of Owings, Md., and Mildred Lerch of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Judith L. Beckwith
Judith L. Beckwith, 48, passed away after a long illness Sunday, June 28, 1998 at St. Thomas Hospital. Judi was born on July 22, 1949, the daughter of Stephen and Ruth Balko. She delivered her class invocation upon graduation from Akron School of Practical Nursing in 1993. Judi was a member of St. Martha Church. She is survived by her loving husband, Jerry Beckwith; daughter, Michelle Frame; sons and daughter-in-law, John Frame, Richard and Jennie Frame; brother and sister-in-law, Stephen and Pat Balko; five grandchildren. Donald Lee Beers, 57, of Akron, passed away June 8, 1998, at Akron City Hospital. He was born July 16, 1940, in Akron, the son of Clarence and Goldie Beers. Mr. Beers was a retired truck driver, and a member of Eagles Lodge 555. Survivors include his loving wife of 38 years, Joan; mother, Goldie Wise; daughter and son-in-law, Theresa and Michael Helmacy; sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Dennis Anderson; sister-in-law, Betty Beers; niece, Kim Kostelny; nephew, Eric and Lisa Smiley, and Alexis Smiley. Margaret Mary Beesing
Margaret Mary Beesing, 87, of Freeport, died Monday, June 8, 1998, at the home of her daughter, Mary B. Wynn of Memphis, Tenn. Born April 22, 1911, in Conneaut, she was a daughter of the late Charles C. Toomey and Cora R. Williams Toomey. She was a 1931 graduate of Conneaut High School. On Aug. 30, 1932, she married Donald W. Beesing. In 1971, they moved from Cuyahoga Falls to Piedmont, and then in 1989 moved to Freeport. Mr. Beesing died Sept. 24, 1994. She was also preceded in death by brother, Walter Toomey; sisters, Charlene Toomey and Mrs. Walter (Florence) Graham; and grandsons, Donald William Beesing II and Adam Lee Casey. Surviving are sons and daughters, Mrs. Roy (Mary) Wynn of Memphis, Tenn., Sister Maria Beesing, O.P., of Akron, Mrs. Gene (Joan) Serri of Cuyahoga Falls, Robert W. Beesing of Eagle River, Alaska, Charles L. Beesing of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., David R. Beesing of Stow, Mrs. Ray (Martha) Casey of Cuyahoga Falls, Mrs. Douglas (Judith) Rawlings of Farmington, Maine, Mrs. James (Monica) Daymon of Stow, and Mrs. Sigmund (Miriam) Lygre of St. Paul, Minn.; brother, Robert F. Toomey of Wilmington, Del., sister, Mrs. Lee (Regina) Pettit of Del Ray Beach, Fla., 40 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. Lily Reid Benedick went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 10, 1998. She was born in Dunnville, Ky., lived most of her life in the Akron area, and was a member of the Northwest Avenue Church of Christ in Tallmadge. Preceded in death by husband, Ross L., four sisters and one brother, she is survived by daughter, JoAnn McDaniel of Suffield; sons and daughter-in-law, William R. and Marilyn Bondurant of Akron, and Ronald R. Preceded in death by husband of 54 years, Fred John Beule, in 1984, she is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Harry T. and Carol Beule of North Canton; daughter, Donna Pinkston of Tallmadge; grandchildren, Martin Pinkston, Matthew Pinkston, Dr. Shannon Pinkston, John Beule, and David Beule; and six great-grandchildren. ATLANTA, Ga. -- Mr. Louis W. Bissell, of Atlanta, died June 4, 1998. Preceded in death by his father, Leroy Bissell, he is survived by his mother, Hazel M. Russell R. Bland, 76, passed away June 3, 1998, at Mercy Medical Center in Canton. He was born Aug. 5, 1921, in Reader, W. Va., the son of John and Austa Bland. Mr. Bland was a veteran of World War II in the U. S. Marine Corps. He loved and enjoyed being a carpenter, which was also his trade. He leaves his loving wife of 58 years, Gladys; loving daughter, Maisie Austin; grandchildren, Russell and Dana Austin, and Scott and Angi Austin; great-grandchildren, Brittani, Amanda, Taylor, and Andrew; many nieces and nephews. WADSWORTH -- Patricia R. Blough, 62, died unexpectedly Thursday, June 4, 1998, at Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital. Mrs. Blough was born in Dublin, Ireland, and resided in Wadsworth 38 years. She was a salesperson at Dillard's in Summit Mall, retiring two weeks ago with 25 years service, and a sales agent with Cutler-Marting Realty. She was a graduate of Loretta College in Dublin, and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Ohio Board of Realtors. Mrs. Blough is survived by daughters, Mary of North Canton and Elizabeth of Cleveland; sons, William of Tampa, Fla., and John of Fairlawn; brothers, Murtha Rooney II of Chicago, Ill., and Frederick Rooney of Wales. She was preceded in death by husband, William; and parents, Murtha and Elizabeth Rooney. Daniel Boggs, 61, passed away June 8, 1998, at Akron General Medical Center. He was born in Neon, Ky., was formerly of Chicago, and had lived in the Akron area most of his life. Mr. Boggs had been employed with Miller's Packing Co. from 1988 to 1992. He is survived by two children of Chicago; brothers, Milton Boggs and Randol Glover; sister, Bessie Mason; nephews, Milton Boggs II and Walter Carpenter; and niece, Charlene Host. William Theodore Brent
BARBERTON -- William Theodore Brent, 76, died June 13, 1998. A life resident of Barberton, he was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University, and Northern Illinois College of Optometry; he practiced optometry in Barberton for 43 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, National Lodge No. 568 F&AM, 32nd Degree, Valley of Cleveland, Tadmor Temple, and Barberton Elks Lodge No. 982. Preceded in death by son, William T. Jr., he is survived by wife, Kathleen; son, Richard (Terrie) of Norton; daughter, Deborah (Don) Booth of Doylestown; and son, James of Golden, Colo. TENNESSEE -- M. Alberta Payne Price Brock, formerly a resident of Cuyahoga Falls and Akron, passed away June 5, 1998, in Tullahoma, Tenn., after a fall in her Estill Springs, Tenn., home. Born Aug. 25, 1926, in Franklin County, Tenn., she was a former employee of Sun Rubber and Sears Chapel Hill. She also was a member of the Akron Chapter O.E.S. She is survived by her husband, Dow A. Brock of Estill Springs, Tenn.; son, Gary B. Price of Dallas, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Michael Redfern of Cuyahoga Falls; granddaughters, Manda and Sarah Redfern of Cuyahoga Falls; sisters, Mary Floyd and Ruth Blair of Decherd, Tenn., Naoma Hambrick of Prescott, Ariz.; brothers, Allen Garner Payne of Akron, Frank Payne and Lindsay Payne, both of Florida. Born in Brilliant, Ohio, Mr. Brooks lived most of his life in the Akron area, and was employed as an engineer with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in the Tire Technology Division for 34 years. He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, where he served as treasurer, deacon, and Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the Goodyear 25-Year Club and Ohio Genealogy Society. Preceded in death by his father, Raymond, in 1986, he is survived by his wife of 30 years, Karen (Westfall); son, Steven and fiancee, Amy Graber, of Uniontown; daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Clinton Young Jr. of Negley, Ohio; granddaughter, Rebecca Young of Negley, Ohio; mother, Wilma Brooks of Brilliant, Ohio; sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Malcolm Fellows of Brilliant, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. George L. Brown Jr.
George L. Brown Jr., 74, passed away June 1, 1998. Born in Akron, he was a lifetime resident of this community. He had been employed as a rubber worker for the B. F. Goodrich Co., retiring in 1988 after 43 years of service. He is survived by wife, Betty; daughter, Sharilyn (Keith) Kendrick; son, Dale Cook, all of Akron; three grandchildren; sister, Jewel (J. C.) Shirley Bryan
SALEM, S. C. -- Shirley Stough Bryan, 67, of Salem, S. C., died Sunday, May 31, 1998, at her residence, after a brief illness. Born in Greensboro, N. C., she was the daughter of the late Theodore and Mary Sherrill Stough, and had resided in Salem for the last nine years. Mrs. Bryan was a 1952 graduate of Meredith College in Raleigh, N. C., and married James C. Bryan in 1953. She resided in Akron from 1953 to 1989. Mr. Bryan was the manager of Corporate Plant Planning for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. She was the widow of the late James C. Bryan, and is survived by daughter, Deborah R. Bryan and her husband, John S. Auerbach of Johnson City, Tenn.; and sisters, Anne Upchurch of California and Martha Mulkey of Salem, S. C. No memorial service will be held. Jesse F. Burley
BARBERTON -- Jesse F. Burley, 78, died June 2, 1998. He was a 1949 graduate of Penn State, a resident of Barberton for 38 years, and retired from Babock & Wilcox after 32 years service. He was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II, a member of Knights of Columbus 1617 3rd Degree, Firestone V.F.W. 3383, past Exhalted Ruler of B.P.O.E. 982, and a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by son, Jesse W. Surviving are wife of 56 years, Elizabeth; sons, Daniel E. (Carol) and William J. (Laura); grandchildren, John, Michael, Matthew, Ian, Anna, Danette, Vincent, and Shannon; three great-grandchildren; and sisters, Betty Sadora and Louise Ornstein, both of New Jersey. James Everette Burns
James Everette Burns, 75, died Wednesday, June 10, 1998. Mr. Burns was born April 17, 1923, in Mt. Clare, W. Va., served with the U. S. Army during World War II and, prior to his retirement in 1985, was employed by the Brown Lumber Co. He is survived by his wife, Madeline; son, Roy Burns of Akron; sister, Maude Evanson of West Virginia; granddaughters, Stephenia, Laura, and Lisa Burns. No visitation or services.
