COUGHLIN, JOHN - IR? Jan. 16, 1909
John COUGHLIN, an aged Civil War veteran and one of the most respected
residents of the south side, passed away about 9:30 this morning after an
illness which lasted but a brief period. Last Thursday the deceased, while
endeavoring to make some repairs on a sofa in the home of his daughter, Mary
Jane, with whom he resided, scratched the back of one of his hands and in
spite of medical aid, the injury developed into blood poisoning which
resulted in his death this morning. The deceased was a man of many noble
characteristics, chief of which was his gallant work in the Civil war, he
serving throughout that stirring conflict with great ability as a member of
the Second WV Cav. Although not a member of the G.A.R., the deceased was
most proud of his record and achievement in the line of the G.A.R. work. The
deceased was born Mar. 4, 1845 and was therefore about 67 years of age. His
birthplace was PA, his parents emigrating there from Ireland. After the
Civil war, the veteran settled in Ironton and while in Ironton had had
explicit trust placed in him as a citizen and a Christian gentleman, he
being a consistent member of the St. Lawrence church in this city. It is
needless to state the value and worth of such a man as Mr. COUGHLIN, for his
life as he believed it should be led, speaks for itself. While in Ironton
and up until the mills were taken from this city, Mr. COUGHLIN was employed
as a puddler and iron worker. The deceased is survived by one brother,
Morris and one child, Miss Mary Jane with whom he made his home. His wife
passed away years ago. Tom and Dick BARON of this city are half-brothers of
the deceased. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been decided upon.
