USA High School Yearbooks by State and County

Orville Tobias
Orville Dewey Tobias of Xenia died on Friday, April 4, at Greene
Memorial Hospital. He was 78.
He was born June 13, 1924, in Beavercreek Township, the son of Elmer
F. and Anna Catherine Zimmer Tobias.
He served in the 38th Division, 341st Infantry Battalion of the U.S.
Army, in the South Pacific, during World War II. He received the
Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon, three bronze battle
stars, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Overseas Service Bars and good
conduct medal.
He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church of Yellow Springs, Xenia
Masonic Lodge No. 49 and Xenia Chapter No. 36, R.A.M. He was also an
active member of the Old Timer’s Club.
He retired from the Frigidaire-Division of General Motors, later
Harrison Radiator, after 42 years of service. He enjoyed spending time
with family and friends, especially his grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elwood “Pete”
Tobias and Samuel Tobias; and three sisters, Elsie Ankeney, Alberta
Lakes and Joanna Stahley.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rita M. (Corrigan) Tobias,
whom he married June 27, 1953; two sons and a daughter-in-law, John P.
Tobias and Michael A. and Karen Tobias, all of Xenia; daughter and
son-in-law, Rebecca M. and Ted Bahns of Xenia; one grandson, Nicholas
Bahns; four sisters, Gladys Brannon of Columbus, Laverna Nichols of
Dayton, Ruby Everding of Vandalia and Evelyn Hiser of Dayton; and
several nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial was held Monday, April 7, at St. Paul
Catholic Church, with burial following in St. Brigid Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the “Love Cupboard” Old Timers
Club or to a favorite charity.

Cecil E. Stevens
Cecil E. Stevens of Cedarville died Tuesday, April 8, at his home. He was 84.
He was born in Elliott County, Ky., May 5, 1918, the son of Ben and
Nanny (Griffith) Stevens.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. A farmer,
he owned and operated Stevens Market for many years.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grocie Donn Stevens; his
second wife, Betty Young; son Keith Stevens; and brothers, Bert, Dewey
and Ralph Stevens.
He is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Gladys and James
Wheeler of Jamestown; two daughters and a son-in-law, Frances and
Clarence Starling of Chillicothe and Rhonda Thiel of Jamestown; two
sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Barb Stevens of Yellow Springs,
and Randy and Mary Stevens of Cedarville; 11 grandchildren; 12
great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and a host of
cousins, nieces, nephews.
Services will be held Friday, April 11, 10:30 a.m., at the Powers
Funeral Home in Jamestown, where friends may call Thursday, April 10,
6–8 p.m. He will be buried in Silvercreek Cemetery.

Raymond ‘Buster’ Shoemaker
Raymond Elias “Buster” Shoemaker died unexpectedly on Monday, March
31. He was 49.
He was born July 13, 1953, in Xenia. He worked at Detroit Tire for
many years. Mr. Shoemaker enjoyed fishing and being with family and
friends, especially with his grandchildren and his pal, Maggie-Mae.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elias Raymond Shoemaker of
Springfield and Betty Jane (Cope) Payton of Yellow Springs; brother
Roger Cope of Xenia; and sister Diana Puckett of Jamestown.
He is survived by two daughters, Brandy Shoemaker of Springfield and
Robin Shoemaker of Kentucky; sister Joanna Edwards and brother Tom
Gossard, both of Florida; four grandchildren, Raymond and Michael
Kettlehake of Springfield and Dustin and Jared Freeman of Kentucky;
several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Jackson Lytle & Ingling Williams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Elisabeth “Bettie” Belanger Egart
Elisabeth “Bettie” Belanger Egart died a peaceful and gentle death on
Monday, April 14.
She was born in 1912 in Detroit, where she grew up with her sister,
Mimi, under the care of her mother, aunt and grandmother following her
father’s early death, when Bettie was 10.
She attended the Sacred Heart Convent School in Grosse Pointe, Mich.,
where she was a member of a delegation of girls sent to the Vatican in
1923 for the canonization of Sister Sophia Barat, the founder of the
Sacred Heart Order. They sailed to Europe and traveled for a month in
several countries. It was always one of her favorite childhood
memories.
In 1942, while attending an Officer’s Club dance in Detroit, she met
Army Lieutenant George Egart of Atlanta, who was temporarily stationed
in Detroit. Six months later they married, eventually settling in
Chicago where they raised their five children, Liz, Michael, John,
Katie and Peter.
Their happy life was centered on family, friends and their children’s
activities, especially sports. They took a special delight in
participating in their grandchildren’s lives. They were active members
of St. Paul of the Cross parish in Park Ridge, Ill.
After 49 years of marriage, George died in 1992.
In 2000, Mrs. Egart moved to Yellow Springs to be near her daughter
Katie. Mrs. Egart was one of the first residents of the Friends
Assisted Living Center shortly after it opened. She quickly made good
friends with other residents, staff and Yellow Springs residents,
enjoying weekly bridge games with Willa Dallas, fellow resident Betty
Sackett and others. She delighted in the natural surroundings here,
the trees, wildflowers, the bikepath, the Glen. She also thoroughly
enjoyed people-watching in downtown Yellow Springs. She attended St.
Paul Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband George and her first
grandson, Kevin McDougal.
She is survived by her sister, Mimi Brenton; a niece, Stephanie
Montoya of Albuquerque, N.M.; and her five children, a son-in-law, two
daughters-in-law and grandchildren, Liz and Pat McDougal of Nashville,
and their three children and spouses, Sean and Liz McDougal, Dan
McDougal and Heather and Kris Bomar; Mike Egart of Chicago and his
children, Mary Frances, Timothy, Patrick and Michael; John and Patty
Egart of Minneapolis and their three children, Christy, Ben and Allie;
Katie Egart of Yellow Springs; and Peter and Mary Egart of Brookings,
S.D., and their two children, Emily and Katie.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow (Friday), 10:30 a.m., at St.
Paul Catholic Church. A memorial reception and lunch will also be held
tomorrow, at noon, at Friends Assisted Living Center.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Friends Assisted
Living Landscape Fund, 170 East Herman Street, Yellow Springs, Ohio
45387.

Lynn Bond Brown
Lynn Bond Brown of Springfield died Friday, April 11, in Community
Hospital. She was 50.
Born on July 17, 1952, in Springfield, she was the daughter of Charles
Levi and Juanita (Richendollar) Bond.
Ms. Brown was a waitress for the Hickory Inn for 17 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
She is survived by her husband, Timothy K. Brown; sister and
brother-in-law, Sonja Bond-Clark and John Wall Clark of Yellow
Springs; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Harold and Kay Brown of
Urbana; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David and Kim Brown of
Urbana; her uncle and aunt Buddy and Dixie Richendollar of Springfield
and many other aunts, uncles and cousins that she was close to.
Funeral services were held Monday, April 14, in the Littleton and Rue
Funeral Home. Burial was in the Rose Hill Burial Park.
Dennis Andrews
Dennis Ray Andrews of Xenia died suddenly on Tuesday, April 8, at
home. He was 51.
Born in Xenia, he was the son of Dean and Mary Ann (Benefield) Andrews.
Mr. Andrews was employed at Vernay Laboratory. He married Katherine J.
Shanks on July 25, 1970.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his wife; his mother, Mary Ann of Xenia; his son and
daughter-in-law, Chad and Kristen Andrews of Xenia; grandchildren,
Dillon and Cheyenne Andrews of Xenia; brothers and sisters-in-law,
Gary and Kathy Andrews of Xenia, Larry and Judy Andrews of Mason and
Bob and Bess Andrews of Georgia; sisters, Susan Hoel of Indiana and
Pat Miller of Dayton; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Friday, April 11, at Dayton Avenue
Baptist Church in Xenia, with interment in Woodland Cemetery in Xenia.
Memorial donations may be made to Xenia Firefighters Local 698, 225
East Main Street, Xenia, Ohio 45385. McColaugh Funeral Home is in
charge of arrangements.

Lenna Christine Straight
Lenna Christine Straight, formerly of Springfield, and a resident of
Pleasant Hill Manor, Piketon, died on Wednesday, April 16. She was 83.
She was born in Yellow Springs, Nov. 25, 1919, the daughter of Frank
and Senorita Rose Adeline (Blakely) Brakeall.
She married Charles Albert Straight on July 24, 1935, and they were
married forty-four years until his death on Nov. 23, 1979.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two children, Roy Rogers
Straight and Cynthia Kay Straight; two brothers, Harley and Clarence
Brakeall; and five sisters, Nora, Alberta, Clara Mae, Ida and Sarah.
She is survived by ten children: Charles D. (Christine) Straight, Mary
A. (Jerry) Palmer, Ronald E. (Julia) Straight, Norma J. (Fred)
Johnson, Allen D. “Duby” (Annalisa) Straight, Lenna C. “Sue” (Graydon)
Green, Beverly A. Folden, Karen C. (Darvin) Green, Diane L. (Randy)
Vermillion, Melanie J. (Steve) Standley; thirty-five grandchildren,
seventy-six great grandchildren; three brothers, Frank, George and
Jimmy Brakeall, and a sister, Dorothy Allen; and many nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 19, and burial was in
Clifton Cemetery.

Joan S. Anderson
Joan S. Anderson of Granville died Tuesday, April 15, at the Selma
Markowitz Care Center. She was 71.
She was born Sept. 9, 1931, in Jackson County, to Clara M. (Halterman)
Stancliff of Yellow Springs and the late Harmon H. Stancliff. She was
a 1949 graduate of Bryan High School in Yellow Springs.
She was business manager of Jersey Mike’s Subs in Heath and
Pickerington, and retired as the office manager for Dr. E.O. Jenkinson
and Dr. D. Dachenbach, both in Granville.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Richard P.
Anderson; son, Richard C. Anderson and his wife, Kate, of Newark;
daughters, Rebecca Anderson Zeller and her husband, Clay, Melissa
Anderson, Amy Anderson Neu and her husband, Blake, all of Newark;
grandchildren, Adam Zeller, Abigail Anderson Zeller, Nicholas Lange,
Nathan Lange, Emily Anderson, and Jonathan Neu, all of Newark;
brother, Harold Stancliff and his wife, Virginia, of Yellow Springs;
and, sisters-in-law, Patty Bittner and her husband, Jack, and Linda
Shook and her husband, Howard (Bud), all of Yellow Springs; and many
nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held on Friday, April 18, in Granville, with
burial following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be
made to the American Cancer Society, 151 Lake Street, Lancaster, Ohio
43130-2589 or the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, 386 Park Avenue
South, 17th Floor, New York, N.Y., 10016.

Lester Paxson
Lester Leroy Paxson died on Tuesday, Aug. 5, in Community Hospital in
Springfield. He was 92.
He was born on Jan. 16, 1911, in Clark County, the son of John Martin
and Jennie Mae (McFarland) Paxson.
He was a lifelong resident of Greene County. He was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church of Yellow Springs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy (Rine)
Paxson in October 1991; his brother, Howard Paxson; and two sisters,
Florence Jane Grey and Lois Donahoe.
He is survived by many good friends.
Friends may visit on Friday, Aug. 8, from noon until the time of
service at 1 p.m. in the Jackson Lytle & Ingling Williams Funeral Home
in Yellow Springs. Interment will follow in Byron Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church,
314 Xenia Avenue, Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387, or to a charity of one’s
choice.

Wesley Henrikson Sr.
Wesley R. Henrikson Sr., formerly of Shelby, died Saturday morning,
Aug. 2, at Friends Care Community. He was 92.
Mr. Henrikson was born April 26, 1911, in Belleville, N.J., the son of
the late Wesley Emanuel and Karin Regina (Eklof) Henrikson.
He retired as a manufacturer’s representative for the Alabama Pipe
Company. He was a charter member of the East Millstone Rescue Squad in
East Millstone, N.J. He was a former member of the American Society of
Sanitary Engineers, Shelby A.A.R.P., where he was an officer, and the
Shelby Country Club. He was active with the Junior Achievement program
in Shelby for many years.
During his retirement years, Mr. Henrickson worked at Shelby Senior
High School as a teacher’s aide and in the athletic department. He
attended Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. He was an avid
golfer.
Mr. Henrikson was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Dyleski
Henrikson, in March 1994; a brother, Leroy; and a sister, Margaret.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gerry and Jim Coen of
Fairborn; a son and daughter-in-law, Wesley R. Jr. and Sally Henrikson
of Northville, Mich.; grandchildren, Andy Coen of Fairborn, Carrie and
Chris Sullivan of Jersey City, N.J., Holly and Denis Hayes of
Lewisville, Texas, and Suzi and Albert Tapia of Oak Park, Mich.; two
great grandchildren, Jack Hayes and Abby Hayes.
Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 5, at the
Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Shelby, with burial in the
parish cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s
Association, 3797 Summit Glen Drive, Dayton, Ohio 45449, or to Hospice
of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45420.

Memorial service for Jean Olds
A memorial service will be held for Jean C. Olds on Saturday, Aug. 16,
3–6 p.m., at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meetinghouse, 2884
U.S. 68.
Jean died at her home on Feb. 15 of an apparent heart attack. She was 76.
She was born in Watertown, S.D., on Nov. 4, 1926. In 1950 she moved to
Yellow Springs. For many years she worked in Olive’s Beauty Shop, then
bought the shop and named it Jeannie’s Beauty Shop.

Memorial celebration for Phillips Ruopp
A memorial celebrating the life of Phillips B. Ruopp will be held on
Saturday, Sept. 13, 2–3:30 p.m., at the Glen Helen Building.
Mr. Ruopp died of advanced heart disease on Thursday, June 19, in Tucson, Ariz.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Frankie Ritter Ruopp, a former
teacher, now residing in Tucson; four children, Rebecca of Tucson,
Charles of Newton, Mass., Douglas of Tucson and Julia of Yellow
Springs; and five grandchildren.

Frank R. Lewis
Frank R. Lewis of Yellow Springs died Tuesday, Nov. 25, following a
lengthy illness. He was 48.
He was the son of Lou A. McNary of Yellow Springs. He was a 1973
graduate of Yellow Springs High School and remained in the village
after graduation.
He was a very active coach and volunteer with the Yellow Springs
Little League for many years and also assisted with the youth soccer
program. Mr. Lewis starred in tennis while in high school and remained
active with the sport, teaching and coaching area adults and youth
until his health declined in recent years. He also assisted the Yellow
Springs High School basketball team during its recent successful
tournament run. He will be remembered for his avid love of sports. He
was a lifetime Cleveland Browns and Indiana Hoosiers fan, and
local sports fans will miss his constant commentary regarding his
favorite teams.
He is survived by his loving mother, Lou, who is a resident at the
Friends Care Community; a host of cousins in Ohio, Indiana and
Michigan; a long list of friends, former teammates and players who
will miss him.
A memorial gathering of friends and family was held on Saturday, Nov.
29, as sports and music were mixed with warm memories and smiles. A
tree, with a memorial plaque, will be planted in Mr. Lewis’s memory
either at Ellis Park or near the Little League field on a yet to be
determined date.

Fred J. Anderson
Fred J. Anderson of Xenia died on Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Greenwood
Manor, one week before his 99th birthday.
He was born on Dec. 6, 1904, in Nelsonville, the son of William Arthur
and Agnes (Hitchings) Anderson.
He retired from Morris Bean & Company and later worked at K-Mart in
Xenia. He was an avid gardener and was proud of his tomato and green
pepper plants. He was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist
Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Nellie Mae
(Merriman) Anderson, who died on Dec. 24, 1995; his parents; a son,
Richard E. Anderson; two brothers, Arthur and John Anderson; and three
sisters, Ruth Richards, Katherine Novielle and Irene Raybold.
He is survived by a daughter, Bonnie Soward of Xenia; sons and
daughters-in-law, Raymond W. and Ruth L. Anderson of Xenia and Bill
and Oleatha Anderson of Xenia; three sisters, Evelyn Turner, Betty
Bonham and Hazel Edwards; two brothers, Wilford Anderson, and Clarence
Anderson; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 2, at the McColaugh Funeral
Home in Xenia, with burial in the Valley View Memorial Gardens.
