GAINESVILLE, Texas -- Memorial services for former Ardmore resident Sherma Lee Simmons will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home chapel.
Mrs. Simmons died May 27, 1998, in the local hospital. She was born May 4, 1930, in Oklahoma City, to Charles and Minnie Melton Horton.
She graduated from Ardmore High School in 1948 and married Freddy L. Simmons there Aug. 14, 1953. She had lived in Gainesville since 1963.
She is survived by her husband, of the home; and a son Brad, Sherman, Texas.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mary Hoosier
Services for Mary A. Hoosier, 74, are pending from Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home. She died May 27, 1998, in the local hospital.
Albert 'Keith' Shafford
Graveside rites for Albert "Keith" Shafford will be 11 a.m. Monday at Hillcrest Memorial Park with Dr. Lloyd McArthur officiating.
Born April 9, 1917, at Liberal, Kan., to Albert D. and Alpha O. Davis Shafford, he died May 29, 1998, at a local health care facility.
He married Dorothy Gardner on April 16, 1941, at Los Angeles. Shafford had been a resident of Ardmore since 1978, moving here from Enid. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 13th Airborne as a paratrooper. Shafford was a retired civil service employee from Vance Air Force Base at Enid. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; five daughters, Carol Ann Baldwin and Susan Eagan, both Ardmore, Peggy Kirkpatrick, Clarksville, Tenn., Vicki Orluc, southern France, Pamela McConville, Pittsburgh, Penn.; one sister, Dollie Clodfelter, Liberal; three brothers, Phillip and A.D., both Enid, and Donald, Lago Vista, Texas; and 10 grandchildren.
Services are under the direction of Craddock Funeral Home.
Christine Cook
Services for Christine Cook will be 10 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Alton Fannin officiating. Interment will be at 3 p.m. at Fairlawn Cemetery, Chickasha, with Clarence "Pete" Spradlin officiating at the graveside service.
Born Jan. 8, 1927, at Anadarko to Clarence L. and Malinda Ballard Spradlin, she died May 29, 1998, at an Ardmore hospital following an extended illness.
She married Jesse Cook on Jan. 13, 1950, at Lawton. She was a resident of Chickasha from 1945 to 1969, when she moved to Ardmore. Mrs. Cook was a retired employee of Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club and an active member of the First Baptist Church, where she had served as church cook and Falls Creek camp cook.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; two sons, David, Ardmore, and Howard, Chickasha; two sisters, Juanita Price, Oklahoma City, and Mary Shafer, Wichita, Kan.; three brothers, Charles Spradlin, Healdton, Clarence "Pete" Spradlin, Chickasha, and Harold Spradlin, Oklahoma City; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Bearers are Erl Harmon, Hugh Christian, Alvin BAker, Gene Cravatt, Gene Johnson and John Hart.
Services are under the direction of Craddock Funeral Home.
Burniss Buford 'Speck' Holder
STILLWATER -- Services for Burniss Buford "Speck" Holder, 82, will be 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church with Dr. James P. Gragg officiating.
Born Dec. 9, 1915, at Sulphur Springs, Texas, to J.T. and Minnie E. Patrick Holder, he died May 27, 1998 at a Stillwater hospital. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kelly and Rufus; three sisters, Myrtle Lee Hargrove, Gay Emery and Addy Berry.
He married Virginia Riley on Nov. 16, 1940, at Midland, Texas. Holder served in the United States Navy Air Corps during World War II. His position with Gulf Oil Company had his family relocated many times, including to Ardmore. He moved to Stillwater in 1992. He served as marshal of the Karsten Creek Golf Course from its opening in May 1994 until his death. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; one son, Mike; one sister, Elvita Cunningham; and a granddaughter.
Services are under the direction of Strode Funeral Home.
Jeramy Ray Pickens
TISHOMINGO -- Services for Jeramy Ray Pickens, 18, were 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Nazarene with David Bucher and Joey Landsdale officiating. Interment followed at Tishomingo Cemetery.
Born May 25, 1980, at Fresno, Calif., he died May 18, 1998, at his residence. He was preceded in death by a grandmother, Naomi Pickens.
He moved with his parents to Oklahoma in 1988. Pickens had recently completed the 11th grade at Tishomingo High School.
Survivors include his mother, Renee Elain Pickens, father, Kenneth R. Pickens, one brother, Joshua, and one sister, Amber, all of Tishomingo; grandparents, Ralph and Mary Yeats, Tishomingo; great-grandmother, Sis Pickens, Madill.
Bearers were Gary Denton, Daniel Layton, Jeramy Updegraff, Allen Mayes, Ricky Nanney, Jason Studdard, Philip Deaton, T.G. Orr and Korey Whitt. Honorary bearer was the Tishomingo High School Class of 1999.
Services were under the direction of Watts Funeral Home.
Brian 'Boron' Thacker
HEALDTON -- Services for Brian "Boron" Thacker, 40, Countyline are pending with Reser Funeral Home.
Thacker died May 30, 1998, after a sudden illness.
Survivors include his wife, Sandy, of the home; two sons, Chris and Brice, Graham; one stepdaughter, Jo Ann Thomas, Duncan; two stepsons, Bryan Christian and Gene Thomas, both Duncan; mother, Sue Walker, Fox; father Clinton Thacker, Loco; one sister, Debbie Hines, Duncan; two brothers, Alan, Countyline, and Terry, Velma; his grandmother, Jessie Lasenberry, Countyline.
W.B. 'Jimmy' Morgan
EASTMAN -- Services for W.B. "Jimmy" Morgan, 91, will be 2 p.m. Monday, June 1, 1998, at Eastman Baptist Church with the Rev. David Colaw officiating. Interment will follow at Morgan Rest Cemetery in Simon.
Born Oct. 16, 1906, at Santo, Texas, to Alexander L. and Altha N. Irvin Morgan, he died May 29, 1998, at an Ardmore hospital. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jean Morgan, on Feb. 8, 1936; one sister, Eunice Frazier; and two brothers, Cloy and Erskin Morgan.
Morgan moved to Simon in a covered wagon with his family at age 7, and remained in the area where he farmed until the time of his death. Morgan married Mary I. Loving on Nov. 1, 1929, at Orr. He served in the United States Army during World War II, in the 61st Signal Battalion, seeing service in France, England and Germany. Morgan was a member of the Eastman Baptist Church and American Legion Post No. 136 of Marietta.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years; sons and daughters-in-law, Glenn and Paula Morgan, Fort Worth, Texas, Finley and Sharon Morgan, Simon; daughters and sons-in-law, Jessie Mae McGill, Cleveland, Texas, Winnie Hood and the late Marvin Hood, Fort Worth, Jo Ella and Robert Thompson, Falconhead, Polly and Jerry Colburn, Fort Worth, Jill and Robert Anderson, Fort Worth, Mary Ellen and Tim Johnston, Jimtown; sisters, Lorrel Taylor, Malin, Ore., Lucy Mae Sexton and Linis McMillan, both Simon, Grace Tucker, Oswalt, and Anna Belle Shaw, Gainesville, Texas; one brothers, A.L. Morgan, Simon; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Cleatus Vaughan
ROANOKE, Va. -- Services for Cleatus Vaughan were 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Louis M. Strickler officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Burial Park.
Born July 7, 1916, at Love's Valley to John L. and Mary L. Monroe Vaughan, he died May 26, 1998, at his home. He was preceded in death by brothers Theron, Edison and Joseph; and sisters Lallie, Vivian, Lucille, and an infant sister.
Vaughan served in the United States Navy before and during World War II in the Pacific and Atlantic Theatres. After the war he attended Roanoke College at Salem, Va., and graduated from the University of Oklahoma School of Pharmacy. He was retired from the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Salem. Vaughan was a charter member of Northview United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Pitts Vaughan, of the home; sons, David A., Lynchburg, Va., and Gary M., Lexington, Va. one sister, Velma V. Whitfill, Ardmore; and two grandsons.

Jerald D. Sampson
Services for Jerald Donald Sampson were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Craddock Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Steven Walls officiating. Interment will be at Nelda Cemetery.
Sampson died May 31, 1998, in the Ada hospital. He was born Jan. 22, 1947, at Talihina, to Jim and Lucy Sampson. He had lived in the Ardmore area most of his life.
He is survived by two brothers, Charles, Ardmore, and Gary, Okeechobee, Fla.; and two sisters, Francis Roberts, Ardmore, and Jean Parker, Dallas. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Bearers are John Tunnel, Ricky Davis, Curtis Ned, Darrel Sampson, Aaron Thomas and Danny Sampson. Honorary bearers are Eddie Sampson and Paul Wallace.
D.C. Cagle
SULPHUR -- Services for D.C. Cagle, 85, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Clagg Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. James Swain officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery.
Cagle died June 2, 1998, in Sulphur. He was born Sept. 15, 1912, at Davis, to Lee and Maudie Smith Cagle.
A lifetime resident of this area, he attended Davis schools and worked in construction and building for OG&E for many years. He and Gladys Magby were married Dec. 21, 1938, at Sulphur. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a daughter, Charlotte McGowan, Tulsa; three sons, Jerry, Lewisville, Texas, David, Carrollton, Texas, and Dan, Tulsa; a brother, Delbert, Davis; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, J.C.; and sister, Hazel Autry.
Bearers will be Herbert Magby, Darrel Roberson, Mike McGowan, Andy, Greg and Jeff Cagle.
Emery J. Stephenson
Services for Emery J. Stephenson will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Interment will follow at Clearview Cemetery under the direction of Ragsdale-Grant and Sons Mortuary.
Stephenson was born Aug. 22, 1952, in Ardmore to Tom and Rosie Stephenson. He died May 31, 1998, in the local hospital.
Survivors include his mother, Rosie Favors; two sisters, Wanda Stevenson, Ardmore, and Ira Roberts, Gene Autry; three brothers, Charles, Jerry and Thomas, all of Ardmore.
Vida Belle Keith
Services for Vida Belle Keith, 69, are pending from Griffin-Kennedy-Watts Funeral Home. Mrs. Keith died June 4, 1998, in an Oklahoma City hospital.
She is survived by her husband, James, of the home; a son, Ken; and daughter, Donna Lyles, Ardmore; two sisters, Faye Beavers, Wilson, and Viola Barton, Lebanon; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Lydia 'Granny Girl' Ayres
TISHOMINGO -- Services for Lydia M. "Granny Girl" Ayres, 98, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Corbin Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Perry Crisp and Charles Cook officiating. Interment will be at Tishomingo Cemetery.
Mrs. Ayres died June 3, 1998, in Tishomingo. She was born March 3, 1900, at Athens, Texas, to John S. and Gertrude Bulger Ross.
Educated in San Angelo, Texas, she had lived in Johnston County much of her life and was a cook at the Tishomingo grade school many years. She was married to Edward Elonzo "Lonnie" Ayres in September of 1919 at West Ford, Ark. She was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers; a sister; and granddaughter.
Survivors include two daughters, Nell Bennett, Ravia, and Lema Glenn Branum, Tishomingo; a sister, Ruth Pile, Pueblo, Colo.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
Nell Gregory
SULPHUR -- Services for Nell Gregory, 61, will be at 10 a.m. Friday At Clagg Funeral chapel with the Rev. Brad Ransom officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery.
Mrs. Gregory died June 2, 1998, in Sulphur where she was born July 16, 1936, to Ezra and Edna E. Hector Goldsberry.
Reared in Sulphur, she lived in Tulsa and worked as a clerk typist before returning to Sulphur a few years ago. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Shaver, Catossa; her father, Ezra Goldsberry, Sulphur; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Phillip.
