TYLER, Texas -- The remarkable life of Maxine Williams Wilkerson will be celebrated at noon today, July 22, 1998, at the Tyler Unity Center with the Rev. Sandra Benson officiating and Lloyd James Funeral Home directing. A private interment ceremony in the family plot in Rose Hill Cemetery in Ardmore, Okla. is planned Thursday under the direction of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home in Ardmore.
Ms. Wilkerson, age 75, died Friday, July 17, 1998, in a Tyler hospital as a result of chronic pulmonary disease. She approached her infirmity with grace and resisted until the very end the impediments that illness placed upon her independence.
The youngest of seven children, she was born Sept. 16, 1922, on the family farm in Fox, Okla., to the late C.D. and Mattie E. Williams. The family relocated to Ardmore within a few years, and she graduated from Ardmore High School and attended Massey Business College. She had been a resident of Tyler since 1961, and had previously lived in Dallas, El Paso and Alpine, Texas, Lake Charles, La., Oklahoma City, Stillwater and Shawnee, Okla.
Ms. Wilkerson acquired from her parents the passions that persisted throughout her life; a thirst for knowledge, a fondness of travel, a delight in children of all ages, a talent for fishing and an absolute confidence in the virtues of honesty and fairness. She loved her children and extended family with unfathomable depth, and she affectionately welcomed others to share her circle of light and laughter.
In her early adult years, she assisted with her father's oil and gas business interests, then was employed by several department stores and furriers. Upon her marriage and the birth of her children, she became a "professional mother," and devoted her attention to their education and activities, managing her business affairs from an office in her home. When the children grew older, she embarked on several decades of travel, both domestic and foreign, generally accompanied by family members. In her most recent years, she became a member of Tyler Unity Center and participated in Better Breather's Club activities at Trinity Mother Frances.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Curtiss D. Williams; sisters, Virgie Williams Kirkpatrick and Leola Williams Todd; brothers-in-law, Joe B. Kirkpatrick, Joe H. Todd and O.C. Reeves; and sister-in-law, Kathryn Stanley Williams, all native Oklahomans.
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, C. David and Patricia Peck Wilkerson, Denver, Colo.; daughter, D. Karen Wilkerson, Tyler; daughter in spirit, Donna J. Shinn, Tyler; special child by choice, Brandon L. S. Warren, Tyler; brother, J.R. Williams, Prescott, Ariz.; sisters, Opal Williams Reeves, Texarkana, Ark., and Edith Williams Carruth, Shawnee, Okla.; sister-in-law, Paulyne Fountain Williams, Ardmore; and 16 nieces and nephews. She will be sorely missed and fondly remembered by many more who knew her well.
Honorary pallbearers are her beloved health care aides, Carolyn J. Holmes, Pamala J. Williams, Wynell D. Glover, Tammy L. Bush and Beverly J. Starr; her trusted physicians, David J. Sloan, M.D. and J. David Johnson, M.D., whose constant support and gentle care extended and enriched her final years beyond measure.
It was her express wish to benefit certain disadvantaged groups in society. Therefore, the family requests that memorials be made to the East Texas Crisis Center or the Tyler Salvation Army.
