Graveside rites for Ada James, 95, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Donny Custer officiating.
Born Feb. 4, 1903 at Honey Grove, Texas to William and Margaret LaNora Hindman Prescott, She died Sept. 4, 1998 at Fort Worth, Texas following an extended illness. She married William "Bill" James on Aug. 8, 1919 at Atoka. He preceded her in death May 19, 1973. She was also preceded in death by a son, Billy James Jr., March 14, 1990; and two grandchildren, Dennis and DeJuana James.
A resident of Ardmore most of her life, Mrs. James was a homemaker and a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Lequita Eason, Fort Worth; one brother, E.L. Prescott, Indianola; two grandsons; and three great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4-7 p.m. today.
Services are under the direction of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home.
SULPHUR -- Graveside rites for Leonard Byron Sommers, 77, will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oaklawn Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Leveridge officiating.
Born to Adolph and Sally Doney Sommers on Feb. 6, 1921, in Hanover, N.M., Mr. Sommers died Saturday in Sulphur. He worked as a miner in New Mexico before moving to Oklahoma 50 years ago where he was a construction worker. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was affiliated with the Methodist church.
He is survived by Sharon Cornforth, a niece living in Drummond, Okla. A brother, William, preceded him in death.
Services are under the direction of Clagg Funeral Home.
SPERRY -- Funeral services for former Ardmore resident Emma Janie Clowdus will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Don Queen officiating. Interment will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Rose Hill Cemetery in Ardmore.
Born to Robert E. and Garriet Gatlin on Oct. 5, 1901, at Tecumseh, she died Saturday in Sperry.
Survivors include a son, W.H. Clowdus, Turley; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Her husband, W.C., three brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
MARIETTA -- Services for Veda Bea Lawson, 83, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Gardner officiating. Interment will be at Woodberry-Forest Cemetery in Madill.
Mrs. Lawson died Sept. 8, 1998, in an Oklahoma City hospital. She was born Nov. 21, 1914, at Milo, to Levi and Hattie Sims Scott.
She had lived in Love County since 1969 and was a seamstress at Glen Oaks for 31 years before she retired. She was member of Eastside Baptist Church. She and J.B. Lawson were married in November 1974 at Sulphur.
Survivors include her husbnd, of the home; a son, Albert Hunter, Enid; a daughter, Yvonne Martin, Ardmore; a sister, Hazel Kelly, Modesto, Calif.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Bearers will be Ray Blades, Cory Hunter, Wayne Rains, Wes Hickman, Bob Colston, Brad Hunter and Claude Brannan.
Kennedy Funeral Home will direct services.
HEALDTON -- Graveside rites for Fred L. Roberson, 70, will be at 3 p.m. today at Mount Olive Cemetery with Alan Eck officiating.
Roberson died Sept. 7, 1998 in the Oklahoma Veterans Center in Ardmore. He was born Nov. 8, 1927, at Wirt, to Mann and Myrtle Davis Roberson.
A lifetime resident of this area, he served in the Army and was a retired bus driver and barber. He was a member of Ardmore DAV.
He is survived by a brother, Bill, DeLeon, Texas.
Reser Funeral Home will direct services.
NORMAN -- Services for Stacie Olene Shipman, 18, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with Dr. Lavonn Brown officiating.
Miss Shipman died Sept. 6, 1998, at Lake Texhoma. She was born July 5, 1980, in Oklahoma City.
A senior at Norman High School North, she was a member of DECA and a volunteer and coach with the Norman Special Olympics.
Survivors include her parents, Larry and Donna Shipman; and brother, Dillon, all of the home; a sister, Kristen Laney, San Antonio, Texas; grandparents, Floyd and Wyna Shipman, Sulphur, and Paul and Liz Cook, Ardmore; and great-grandmother, Lillie Mae Dillon, Ardmore.
Bearers will be Justin Sanger, Matt Vanderburg, Brian Story, Jake Leba, Cody Tomlinson and Charlie Kusiak. Honorary bearers are all Norman Special Olympics athletes.
Memorials may be made to the Norman Special Olympics or University of Oklahoma baseball team.
Primrose Funeral Home will direct services.
WAURIKA -- Services for Terry Don Allen, 56, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church with Bobby Langston, Noel Curington and the Rev. Tim Bowen officiating. Interment will be at Ryan Cemetery, Ryan.
Allen died Sept. 7, 1998, at his home in Waurika after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 24, 1941, at Ryan, to A.J. and Marie Allen. He was married to Gwen Helms on Dec. 23, 1961, at Waurika.
Reared in Ryan, he had been a farmer and rancher the past 32 years and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Sheila Posey, Iowa Park, Texas, and Sonya Watkins, Sherman, Texas; his mother, Marie Allen, Ryan; three sisters, Frances Menasco, Abilene, Texas, Margie Pruitt, Fort Worth, Texas, and Norma Allen, New Orleans; a brother, Armon, Lone Grove; and three grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Worley and Sons Funeral Home.
SULPHUR -- Services for LaVina Idell Harris, 87, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Sulphur United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vernon Lawrence officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery, Wynnewood.
Mrs. Harris died Sept. 7, 1998, in Sulphur. She was born Aug. 21, 1931, at Kaw City, to Guy W. and Pearl Shiver Johnson.
A lifetime resident of this area, she graduated from Hickory High School and East Central University and was a youth guidance counselor at the Oklahoma School for the Deaf before she retired. She and Tom R. Harris were married April 18, 1952, at Roff. She was a member of Sulphur United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband; and two daughters, LaFaina Harris and Kathy Gallegos, all of Sulphur; a brother, Lathon "Corky" Johnson, Oklahoma City; two sisters, LaDema Kimbrell, Oklahoma City, and LaVone Rivera, Sulphur; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Bearers will be Ron Little, Joe Campbell, Ben Jones, Keith Smith, Bill Bray, Barclay Martin and Dr. G.T. Easley.
KINGSTON -- Services for Theodore Fred "Doe" Henson, 92, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Watts Funeral Home chapel in Kingston with Guy Scott officiating. Interment will be at Willis Cemetery.
Henson died Sept. 7, 1998, in a Durant health care facility. He was born Aug. 17, 1906, at Willis.
A lifetime resident of Willis, he was a farmer and rancher and member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church. He and Amelia Hayes were married in January 1925, at Lebanon. She preceded him in death Dec. 5, 1989.
Survivors include two sons, Elmer, Kingston, and Ivy, Ardmore; two daughters, Neva Hodge, Calera, and Lena R. Stout, Diamond Springs, Calif.; Lucille Pierce, Bogalusa, La., and Alline Tierce, Sandy Hook, Miss.; 14 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Nadine Jeffery; and son, Wayne.
Bearers will be Larry and Leon Lee, Tom Adams, Ray McGahey, Lavon, David and Terry Henson.
WILSON -- Graveside rites for Joe Ike Kennedy, 66, will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hewitt Cemetery with the Rev. Ken Campbell officiating.
Kennedy died Sept. 7, 1998, in an Oklahoma City hospital. He was born May 1, 1932, at Lone Grove, to Carter W. and Dince Pierce Kennedy.
Reared in the Lone Grove-Ardmore area, he served with the Navy in the Korean War then moved to Yuma, Ariz., where he married Helen Louise Hearron June 26, 1958. They returned to Oklahoma in 1968.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Leland, Yukon; two daughters, Cherl Kennedy, of the home, and Mary Cox, Atoka; two sisters, Edna Latham, Springer, and Letha Golden, Illinois; seven brothers, Bud, Midwest City, Delbert, Texas, Willie "Bunk," Noble, Jack, Wilson, Carter Jr., Springer, Roy, Davis, and Bobby, Lindsay; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Bearers will be Junior, Jack, Bob, Roy, Jimmy and Willie "Bunk" Kennedy.
Alexander Funeral Home will direct services.
LONE GROVE -- Services for Leonard Roy Duvak, 84, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Faith Tabernacle Church with the Rev. Leo Potts officiating. Interment will be at Lone Grove Cemetery under the direction of Craddock Funeral Home.
Duvak died Sept. 9, 1998, in a local health care facility. He was born Aug. 3, 1914, at Bennington, to Jimmy J. and Lillie M. Rose Duvak.
He was a lifelong area resident, working in the oil fields and in ranching. He and Leona McGahan were married July 14, 1940, at Newport. She preceded him in death Aug. 14, 1996.
Survivors include two sons, Don, Newport, and Alvin, Lone Grove; three sisters, Onie, Donie and Alphie Sharber, all of Amarillo, Texas; three brothers, Elson, Morton, Texas, Walter and Tommy, Amarillo; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was also preceded by a son, Roy Dean, in 1958.
Bearers will be Jay Hoskins, Marty Everett, Boyd Haydock, Joshua Barbour, Larry Magee and Russell Duvak. David Fuller is honorary bearer.
HEALDTON -- Services for Bob Wilson are pending from Reser Funeral Home. He died Sept. 9, 1998, at his home south of Healdton.
Survivors include his wife, Rose, of the home.
FOX -- Services for Marie Dunn Johnson, 77, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Fox Baptist Church with the Revs. Bob Keck and Roy Lucas officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Ardmore.
Born Feb. 2, 1921, at Love County to George C. Jr., and Lallie Sweat Cloar, she died Sept. 11, 1998, at an Oklahoma City hospital. She married Oklahoma Lee Dunn June 16, 1940, at Ardmore. He preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1974. She then married George E. Johnson on Aug. 11, 1985, at Navasota, Texas.
She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Anthony Wayne Dunn, Sept. 17, 1971.
She was reared in Ardmore and graduated from Ardmore High School in 1938. She also graduated from business college. She worked in the law offices of E.W. Schenk at Ardmore before her first marriage. She lived in Oklahoma City before World War II, working at Tinker Air Force Base. She moved to Fox in 1948, where she owned and operated a hamburger and hot dog stand. She also owned and operated the Fox Accounting Service for 51 years.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Fox Baptist Church, serving as church secretary and also playing the piano and accordion. She was president of the Southwest Region of Oklahoma Society of Public Accountants, National Association of Tax Preparers, National Royalty Owners Association and National Rural Water Association. She was the past director of Western Carter County Water and Sewage. She was a lifetime member of the Fox-Graham Volunteer Fire Department, due to her fund-raising efforts and support. She helped raise funds for the first duplex built by a vocational carpentry class in the nation. She established trust funds for Pooleville and Alma Cemeteries. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 8611.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; one son, Dan A. Dunn, Fox; one daughter, Debora I. Mears, Talco, Texas; on sister, Faye Whitemore, Overbrook; one brother, Calvin Cloar, Fox; two granddaughters and two step-grandchildren.
Bearers are members of the Fishermen Sunday School Class, Kenneth Gordon, Mike Harper, Troy Dixon, Larry Fore, Don Henderson and Kenneth Seals. Honorary bearers are M.E. Smith, Wes Watkins, Ira Broshears, Larry Perdue, and member of the Fox-Graham Volunteer Fire Department.
