Peter Ernst Riedel was born in Halle, Germany in 1905, the son of a Lutheran minister and one of four children.
Always an excellent student, Peter graduated from the Technical University in Darmstadt with a degree in aeronautical engineering.
In the summer of 1920, Peter fulfilled a youthful dream. He joined a group of young people who shared a common goal -- to build and fly motorless airplanes. From that time on, he joined with glider enthusiasts from all walks of life at the Wasserkuppe in the Rhoen Mountains and, thanks to the efforts of these talented young men, soaring beame a practical reality as we know it today. At age 14, Peter designed and built his own glider and emerged as one of a handful of world class soaring pilots, winning some of the highest honors a soaring pilot could achieve, including the Rhoen Soaring Contest in 1933, the Hindenburg Cup in 1934, the 8th International Soaring Contest at Elmira, N.Y., and the duPont Trophy in 1938.
It was during these early years that Peter flew as a pilot for Lufthansa, the German Airline. However, with the onset of World War II, he was commissioned a captain in the German Air Force and served as Military Attache at the German Embassy in Washington D.C. and Stockholm, Sweden. While in Washington he met and married Helen Klug, a young art teacher from Indiana.
In 1944, while at the German Embassy in Sweden, he resigned his commission rather than obey an illegal order from his superiors. He received permission to remain in Sweden, but fearing he would be sent back to Germany, he escaped to Casablanca and eventually made his way to South America. His dream was to return to the United States and eventually he fulfilled his goal and became a United States citizen in 1959.
During this period in the U.S., Peter worked for TWA and later Pan American World Airways as an aeronautical engineer. After retiring from Pan Am, his yearning to travel remained and before finally settling in Ardmore, he and Helen moved to East Africa, where he worked as a volunteer pilot ferrying medical doctors to and from remote areas of Kenya and Tanzania.
In the late 1970s, Peter accepted a job in Ardmore assisting a local manufacturer of military aircraft ejection seats. Because of decline in military orders, the company ceased operation but Peter and Helen elected to remain and make Ardmore their home.
During his retirement years, Peter remained active in pursuing new projects and activities. He taught soaring in Rockwall, Texas, and authored a trilogy on the History of Soaring, lectured and presented various papers at technical seminars both in the US and Europe, and worked on his memoirs.
His enthusiasm for life never waned and his interest in helping less fortunate ones and making this a better world remained undiminished.
