ATOKA -- Services for longtime Atoka resident Darwin Hale Setliff, 87, Ardmore, will be at 11 a.m. Friday, March 16, 2001, at the Penn and A Street Church of Christ in Atoka. Gary Henson will officiate with Rick Popejoy and David Harendt assisting. Interment will be at Green Meadows Cemetery.
Mr. Setliff was born May 17, 1913, at Creta, Jackson County, Okla., one of 12 children born to Benjamin Smithers and Aletha Darwin Setliff. He passed away March 12, 2001, in Ardmore, at the age of 87 years, nine months and 25 days.
He graduated from Eldorado High School, Eldorado, Okla., attended Cameron College in Lawton and graduated from Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater with his bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry and education.
He and Rebecca Josephine Briscoe of Frederick, Okla., were married Dec. 22, 1939, in Oklahoma City.
A retired rancher and businessman, Darwin came to Atoka in November 1940 when he joined the Farm Security Administration. In 1948, the Setliffs purchased Walker's Grocery Store, and after re-selling the store to Mr. Walker, Mr. Setliff opened Setliff Implement Company in 1949, the first full service John Deere dealership in the Atoka area. The Setliffs and Wendell Hunt purchased Paul Kelley's Hardware and Furniture Store in 1958. In 1970 he sold his implement business to Joe Brecheen. In 1978, when the Setliffs acquired the Hunt's interest in the hardware and furniture business, Mr. Setliff relocated his business to a new building on South Mississippi in Atoka. Mr. Setliff sold the business to Bob and Myrna Olds in 1981.
Mr. Setliff was steadfast in his involvement with his family, church and community, serving as a deacon and elder for many years in the Penn and A Street Church of Christ. He also served on the City Council and school board and was past president of the Atoka Lions Club. He was a founding member of the Atoka County Industrial Authority and of the First National Bank were he served as director. In addition to his business and community interests, Mr. Setliff was actively involved in ranching throughout his life, enjoying many years of work on the family homeplace at Atoka.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine, of the home in Ardmore; two children; Rebecca J. Heatherly and husband, Glenn, of East Abilene, Texas, and Meredith C. Smartt and husband, Claude E., of Ardmore; grandchildren, Ronald G. Heatherly of Arlington, Texas, Phillip A. Heatherly of Euless, Texas, Rebecca A. Powell and husband, James, of Flower Mound, Texas, John C. Smartt and wife, Shelli, of Carrollton, Texas, David E. Smartt of Dallas, Robert M. Smartt of Springfield, Mo., and Rachael L. Martino and husband, Nicola, of Ardmore; great-grandchildren, Charles A. "Chase" Heatherly, Lacey R. Heatherly, Bethany L. Powell, Caleb J. Powell, Isaac W. Powell and Julie Meredith Powell; four brothers, Ennis Setliff, of Crowell, Texas, Ben S. Setliff and wife, Dorothy, of Amarillo, Texas, David E. Setliff and wife, Melba, of Lubbbock, Texas, Duane A. Setliff and wife, Margie, of Dallas; two sisters, Gladys A. Setliff of Hereford, Texas, and M. Ruth Johnston of Mesa, Ariz.; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins; other relatives, and many dear and loved friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Aletha Setliff; a son, Michael Darwin Setliff in 1980; a brother, Chester B. Setliff; and four sisters, Lochie Setliff, Bernice Tarter, Daisy I. Rowland and Eva Mae Earnhart.
Casket bearers will be grandsons, Ronald Heatherly, Phillip Heatherly, John Smartt, David Smartt, Robert Smartt, Jim Powell, Nicola Martino and Chase Heatherly. Honorary bearers are Jim Briggs, Clifford Brown, Morris Cochran, Ronnie Cochran, A.B. Elrod, Lee Evan, Ralph Fugate, Russell Fugate, Ray Harness, Jesse Knight, Tom Matlock, Charles McCall, Bill Stewart, Cap Stewart, Royce Thomas, Brown Wyrick and Bill Young.
Family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Brown's Funeral Service Chapel in Atoka.
DAVIS -- Services for Foster Hayes Thomas, 80, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Frank Duncan and Dr. David Eggenberg officiating. Interment will be at Green Hill Cemetery under the direction of Fox Funeral Home.
Thomas was born Feb. 22, 1921, at Davis, to Jesse D. and Dora C. Simms Thomas. He died March 15, 2001, in Ardmore.
He was a lifetime resident of Davis and manager of the Arbuckle Master Conservancy District. He and Margaret Hawkins were married June 6, 1940, in Davis.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a daughter, Thelma Holder, Davis; a son, Jim, Moore; a sister, Nona Russell; and brother, J.D., also of Davis; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, John D, in 1994; a sister, Nina Smith; and a great-grandson.
Bearers will be Delford Fox, Guy Waters, Randy Moore, Ed Nelms, Norvis Thompson and Edgar Lee. Honorary bearers will be members of the Arbuckle Mastery Conservative District Board.
MADILL -- Services for Geree Peck, 88, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Watts Memorial Chapel with Haskell England officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. at Sunny Lane Cemetery, Midwest City.
Born Aug. 1, 1912, in Ryan to Oak and Bessie Pennington Reynolds, she died March 9, 2001, at Madill. She married Zeke Blevins on May 25, 1930. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1960.
She was raised in Comanche County and later lived at Oklahoma City and Duncan between 1960 and 1980. She then moved to Madill where she lived the remainder of her life. She worked with her husband at their lumber yard and was involved in the oil and gas business. She was a member of Duncan Happy Travelers, Madill Square Dancers and the Church of Christ. She loved to travel, fish and play Skip-bo.
Survivors include one daughter, Wilene Miller, and her husband, Floyd, Madill; grandsons, Jeff and Johnnie Mundy, Duncan, and Eric Miller, Oklahoma City; and great-granddaughters, Erin Miller, Jamie Mundy and Jeri Beth Mundy.
Bearers are Phillip Gray, Toss Crow, Aaron Dry, David Elmore, Lloyd Sambo Eppler, Jerry Elmore and Don McCuddy.
Visitation is noon to 9 p.m. today.
Memorials may be made to Marshall Memorial Hospice.
Graveside services for Pauline V. Burris, 84, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Hershel Morgan officiating.
Mrs. Burris was born Jan. 19, 1917, at Springer to Albert Worth and Mollie McLain Terry. She died March 16, 2001, in the local hospital.
A resident of this area all her life, Mrs. Burris worked as a seamstress many years. She was also a homemaker and member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; and a sister.
She is survived by a son, Robert and his wife, DeeAnn, Burris of Ardmore; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home will direct services.
WILSON -- Graveside rites for Holmes Daniel McCurtain, 65, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Enville Cemetery with the Rev. Eugene Christian officiating.
Born Aug. 10, 1935, at Enville to Robert W. and Florence Etta Smith McCurtain, he died March 15, 2001, at an Oklahoma City hospital. He was preceded in death by one sister.
He married Teresa Bruggy. McCurtain worked as a tree trimmer for McCoys Tree Service. He was also a musician with The Country Wrangler Band.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Glenn McCurtain, Marietta, and Chris McCurtain, Greenville; two daughters, Gina Shackleford, Alfalfa, and Denise Skinner, Ardmore; two stepsons, Donald Poplin, Ardmore, and Mike Poplin, Dickson; one stepdaughter, Regina Forson, Ardmore; one brother, James McCurtain, Lone Grove; one half-brother, Lester Diemer, Lone Grove; two sisters, Evelyn Berry and LaVerne Johnson, both of Ardmore; three half-sisters, Rosetta Dobbs, Lois Shaver and Nina Love, all of Lone Grove; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
RAVIA -- Services for Joan Coffey, 63, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Rock Harbor Church with the Rev. Jonathan Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Ravia Cemetery.
Born Dec. 24, 1937, in Coleman, Texas, to Albert Lee and Alta Orange Dobbs, she died March 9, 2001, in the Ardmore hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Alana Jo.
She attended Coleman school. She served as a payroll clerk in the United States Army during the Korean War. She married Sam "Mick" Coffey on April 17, 1980, at Gainesville, Texas. She worked for more than 17 years at Johnston Memorial Hospital as a purchasing agent, retiring in 1995.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; one son, Bo Coffey, Ravia; one brother, Glenn Dobbs, England; three grandchildren, Alysha Jewell Coffey and Amanda Leigh Coffey, Davis, and J.C. Coffey, Dallas; other relatives and many friends.
Bearers are Wayne Swain, Harold Swain, Bernie Kite, Gary Kite, Stacy Kite, J.C. Coffey and Jason Kite.
Services are under the direction of Clark Funeral Home.
Graveside services for Irene Faye Whitmore, 90, were 2:30 p.m. March 17, 2001, at McAlister Cemetery with Major Wesley Short officiating.
Born Sept. 23, 1910, at Dallas to the late Calvin and Myrtle Sweat Cloar, she died March 16, 2001, at her residence.
She married Harry Whitmore April 18, 1933, at Ardmore. He preceded her in death Oct. 6, 1980. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Perry and Leroy Cloar; a sister, Marie Dunn Johnson; and infant twin sisters.
Mrs. Whitmore had been a resident of this area for most of her life. She was a graduate of Ardmore High School and had worked for both Daubes and S.H.Kress Company for many years. She was a member of the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary, Love County Demonstration Club and First Christian Church.
Survivors include her son, Thomas Whitmore, Ardmore; four grandchildren, Marilyn Ashcraft, Sam Whitmore, Christi Reeves and Shelly McGlocklin; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services were under the direction of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home.
BURNEYVILLE -- Services for Geneva Katherine Shankles, 79, were Saturday at Burneyville Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Gunnels officiating. Interment followed at Burneyville Cemetery.
Born Sept. 20, 1921, in Forestburg, Texas, to L.T. "Red" and Rosie Jane Monroe Kitchens, she died March 8, 2001, in the Marietta hospital. She married William Otis "Buster" Shankles on July 2, 1938, in Marietta. He preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1977. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, John Kitchens and L.T. Kitchens.
Mrs. Shankles had been a resident of Burneyville all of her life, attending school at Burneyville. She was a rancher and had been employed at Marietta Sportswear for 12 years and Little Brownie Bakery for 22 years. She was a member of Burneyville Baptist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Sonny Shankles and Charles Shankles, both Marietta, Don Shankles, Granbury, Texas, and Troy Shankles, Burneyville; three daughters, Sylvia Stewart, Ardmore, Linda Stewart, Burneyville and Vickie Shankles, Marietta; one brother, Claude Kitchens, Hawthorne, Calif.; one sister, Gladis Gibson, El Paso, Texas; 17 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Bearers were Tony Stewart, Bert Higgs, Kent Shankles, Kerry Don Shankles, William Shankles and Ryan Shankles. Honorary bearers were Rex Harrill, Marion Hicks, Johnny Hartman, Lance Shankles, Billy W. Shankles, Jerry Stewart, Jack Heffington and Corky Cartwright.
Services were under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home.
WEWOKA -- Graveside rites for Jimmy Ervin Potter Sr., 68, will be 10 a.m. Monday at Oakwood Cemetery.
Born March 13, 1932, in Holdenville to John and Lucille Myatt Potter, he died March 8, 2001, at his residence. He married Jeanene Robertson on May 24, 1955, in Wewoka. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Peters and an infant brother.
He had worked in the oil fields and did mechanic work. Potter had served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Survivors include children, Kirk Potter, Ardmore, Cindy Tolbert, Fort Worth, Texas, Jimmy E. Potter Jr., Midwest City, and Mitchell Potter, Wewoka; sisters, Patricia Montgomery and Jana Beth Hays, both Fort Worth, 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services are under the direction of Stout Funeral Home.
Services for Mary I. Hunt, 75, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ivy Henson officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery.
Born Aug. 10, 1925, at Springer to Harvey and Viola Mae Tally Blalock, she died March 30, 2001, at a local hospital. She married John Henry Hunt Aug. 1, 1959, at Marietta. He preceded her in death Oct. 25, 1976. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Jack.
She had lived in the Ardmore area all of her life. She started her nursing career at the Hardy Sanitarium. Mary was a licensed practical nurse with Memorial Hospital where she retired after working for more than 25 years.
Survivors include one sister, Margie Blalock, Oklahoma City; one stepson, Johnny Wayne Hunt; one stepdaughter, Jackie Hunt; several grandchildren; and a host of special friends.
Bearers are Truman Blanton, Obit Blanton, Mike Blanton, Cy Doggett, Larry Latimer and Dee Debord.
RINGLING -- Graveside services for Letha Rochell, 89, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cornish Cemetery with nephew Jay Thomas and Gary Labeth officiating.
Mrs. Rochell was born May 28, 1911, at Weatherford, Texas, to W.A. "Bill" and Lena A. Stroud Davis. She died March 8, 2001, in a local health care facility.
Reared at Mountain Home, she had lived in Ringling since 1964 and was a member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by a son, David Wayne Rochell on Nov. 18, 1999; her parents; two sisters; and six brothers.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Cathy Rochell; seven grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Spivey's Reser Funeral Home will direct services.
LEON -- Services for Juanita Alma Brintle, 84, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Leon Baptist Church with the Rev. David Shue officiating. Interment will be at Leon Cemetery.
Mrs. Brintle was born Dec. 29, 1916, at Rubottom, to W.C. and Anna M. Gatlin Stockton. She died March 8, 2001, in the Ardmore hospital.
A lifetime resident of the Rubottom-Leon area, she graduated from Courtney High School in 1934 and as a member of Leon Baptist church, taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school, sang in the choir and was active in WMU. She and L.A. "Nig" Brintle were married July 17, 1934, at Leon. He preceded her in death Dec. 16, 1978.
She is survived by a sister, Pearl Lowe, Gila Bend, Ariz.
Nephews will serve as bearers. Honorary bearers are Ott Ladner, Woodrow Kendall, Buddy Clark, Boog Taliaferro and Archelowe Terrill.

A celebration of the incredible life of Patty Virginia Saxon Norton will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, March 9, 2001, at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Ardmore, Okla. Elder Harvey Kornegay will officiate. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. at Pilot Point, Texas.
Patty Virginia Saxon Norton was born March 2, 1919, in Slidell, La., to Hallie E. and Andrew Saxon, the last of their six children. She passed from this earth March 5, 2001, at Mercy Memorial Health Center in Ardmore after a lengthy illness.
A lifetime resident of Oklahoma, she attended school in Ardmore and Mannsville and graduated from Murray State College in Tishomingo as a registered nurse in 1973.
On Dec. 23, 1935, at Madill, Okla., she married Henry W. "Buck" Norton of Mannsville, Okla. They had four children.
Patty was an active member of many civic and social organizations, including the Ardmore Seventh-day Adventist Church and the local and Bartlesville chapters of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Patty held various offices in these organizations during her lifetime.
An avid reader and history lover, she was also a published author of articles in historical and genealogical journals and poetry and had a regular column in The Daily Ardmoreite. She was a member of the Oklahoma Pen Women and American Pen Women.
In 1983, she and Dr. Layton Sutton, also of Ardmore, compiled and published "The Indian Territory and Carter County Pioneers" history book which is used as a reference book in libraries nationwide as well as in thousands of private homes.
A respected resource for historical and genealogical information, she received requests from people all over the country in search of their roots, and she taught adult education classes in genealogical research. In 1965, along with other local historians, she helped establish The Chickasaw Historical Society which later became the Carter County Historical Society, reorganized as the Historical and Genealogical Society of Carter County. This organization currently oversees The Greater Southwest Historical Museum, located in the old armory building in Ardmore, Okla. The museum presented her two awards The "Roll of Honor Award" and the "Hall of Fame Award," the latter being the museum's most prestigious honor recognizing her tireless efforts in preserving local history. She served as a charter board member of the museum until her death.
Patty retired from the Uniroyal Tire Company in Ardmore in the position as plant nurse after a lengthy nursing career in the Ardmore area. Beginning as an untrained practical nurse, her career in her beloved nursing profession ended with a part-time position at a local nursing home when she was 81-years-old after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
A True angel of mercy, she gave tirelessly of herself to her patients, family, friends and strangers in need.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, A.J. and Nish; sisters, Josephine Stewart, Kathleen St. Clair and Percy Jean Eggert; and her beloved eldest daughter, Virginia Pauline Mortensen of Phoenix, Ariz.
She is survived by Henry W. Norton Sr.; her three children, Wanda Whiteside, Guthrie, Okla., and Henry Jr. and David, both of Houston; nine grandchildren, Jodi, Walter, Terri Lynn, Brenda, Stacey, Brett, Lindsey, Jenna and Kelsey; nine great-grandchildren, Rogan, Cierra and Niki; and many, many dear friends who are all part of her family.
"Do not stand at my grave and weep. Until the Lord comes, I am just asleep."
Bearers will be Robert Chandler, Robert Gill, Bill Hamm, Ken Ruhl, Louie Remondino and Church Watterson. Honorary bearers are Joyce Franks, Leon Gleason, Bill Lewis, Robert Shaw, Aubrey Taylor and Haywood Vaughn.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home.
