SHREVEPORT, La. -- Graveside rites for Laverta Mae Simmons, 83, were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Hill Crest Memorial Park, Shreveport.
Mrs. Simmons died March 4, 1997, in Shreveport. She was born May 5, 1913, at Hickory Ridge, Ark., to Louis C. and Maudie L. Ball.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; two daughters, Rebecca Dodson, Mobile, Ala., and La Juana Dodd, Ardmore; two sons, Bill Lewis, Sparks, N.Y., and Jan Lewis, Oklahoma City; two sisters, Andy Ball, Lawton, and Bernice Smith, Broken Arrow; a brother, L.L. Ball, Tampa,. Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Hill Crest Funeral Home directed services.
RATLIFF CITY -- Services for Pleasant L. "Pete" Tivis, Countyline, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Ratliff City First Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Johnston and Dwight Hawkins officiating. Interment will be at Duncan Cemetery under the direction of Milburn Funeral Home.
Tivis died March 4, 1997, in Ardmore. He was born Jan. 17, 1923, at Tussy, to Joe and Mattie Tivis.
He had lived in the Countyline area all his life and was employed by Koch Oil Co. 40 years before he retired. He and Joyce Norton were married July 15, 1945, at Velma. She preceded him in death.
He is survived by two daughters, Judy Sullivan and Janet Sullivan, Ratliff City; a son, Jerry, Loco; two sisters, Ima Page, Countyline, and Susie Ritter, Duncan; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Bearers will be Dan Wright, Junior Riggle, Robert Butler, Allen Firestone, Connie Burton and Shelton Knutson.
COUNTYLINE -- Services for Sam Riley Staggs will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Free Will Baptist Church with the Rev. L.T. Woodall officiating. Interment will be at Poolville Cemetery under the direction of Milburn Funeral Home, Ratliff City.
Staggs died March 5, 1997, in Ardmore. He was born May 11, 1929, at Carnegie, to James and Bertha Staggs.
A lifelong resident of Countyline, he married Geraldine Ross Feb. 18, 1949, at Levelland, Texas, and was a retired oil field worker. He was a member of Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a daughter, Sharon Bingham, Marlow; son, Michael, Louisiana; thee sisters, Minnie Chandler, Countyline, Juanita Fuller, Fox, and Gladys Lusk, New Mexico; two brothers, Coy and Ed, Countyline; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, brother and grandson.
Bearers will be Johnny and Donny Bingham, Ronnie and Randy Lumbert, Walter Scifers and Jerry Hatton.
CONNERVILLE -- Services for Wendell Wayne "Little Man" Leader Sr. will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Seeley Chapel in Connerville with Charlie Carter officiating. Graveside rites will follow at Seeley Cemetery.
Leader died March 4, 1997, in Ada. He was born Oct. 14, 1950, in Pontotoc, to John and Maggie Culberson Leader.
He attended high school in Fittstown and worked as a laborer. He had lived in Johnston County all his life and was married to Toni Miller March 9, 1969.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Wendell Jr., Oklahoma City; three daughters, Tajuana Walton, Ardmore, Lucinda Bighair and Connie Leader, Tishomingo; three sisters, Marcella Cravatt, Pontotoc, Bonnie Culberson and Darlene Sealy, Connerville; a brother, John, Ada; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents. Bearers will be Kevin McWilliams, Anthony Whelchel, Marvin Sealy, Barney Spain and Stanley Factor. Corbin Funeral Home will direct services.
Memorial services for Marga Stroh will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Craddock Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Monty Baggett officiating.
Mrs. Stroh died March 6, 1997, in an Oklahoma City hospital. She was born Sept. 28, 1924, at Lange, Germany, to Heinrich and Helen Sittmann Rau.
She was the widow of Erwin Stroh who died in 1987.
She is survived by a daughter, Isabelle Vatter Worseldon of Germany; a sister, Brunhilde Rossman of Ardmore; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two nephews, Jeffrey Quinn and Michael Mueller.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 225 First Ave. SW, Ardmore 73401.
LONE GROVE -- Graveside rites for Herbertine Cummings Olson, 77, Burkburnett, Texas, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lone Grove Cemetery with the Rev. Ben Read officiating.
Mrs. Olson died March 5, 1997, in a Wichita Falls, Texas, hospital. She was born Feb. 20, 1920, at Lone Grove.
She graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University and taught school 30 years, many of them in Burkburnett. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Texas Gem and Mineral Society, Retired Teachers and Texas State Teachers associations. She and Raymond Olson were married May 1, 1952, in Wichita Falls.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; two sons, Charles, Wichita Falls, and Kermit, Fort Worth, Texas; and two grandchildren.
Owens-Brumley Funeral Home, Burkburnett, will direct services.
SULPHUR -- Services for Billy West Jr., 41, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Clagg Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James Swain officiating. Interment will be at Oaklawn Cemetery.
West died March 6, 1997, in Oklahoma City. He was born Oct. 28, 1955, in Frankfort, Germany.
Reared in Oklahoma and Colorado, he married Kay Messmer Nov. 20, 1980, in Midwest City, and was an oil field hot shot driver. He lived in Hawaii, Texas and Oklahoma City before moving to Sulphur a few years ago.
Survivors include his wife, of the home; two daughters, Casey Hall, Killeen, Texas, and Nicole West, Oklahoma City; a son, Joseph, Sulphur; his parents, Bill and Joyce West, Sulphur; a sister, Brenda Trueblood, Midwest City; and brother, Edwin, Oklahoma City. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wade.
RINGLING -- Services for Lucille Dover, 72, Fort Worth, Texas, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Community Fellowship Assembly of God Church with the Rev. John Merrell officiating. Interment will be at Dixie Cemetery.
Mrs. Dover died March 5, 1997, in a Fort Worth hospital. She was born Feb. 19, 1925, in Dixie, to Jesse and Lillie Shipman Skeen.
Reared in Loco, she moved to Abilene, Texas, in 1953 and married Lewis Dover Feb. 14, 1956, in Ardmore. They lived in Amarillo, Texas, before moving to Fort Worth 31 years ago. She had been a painting contractor U.S. Housing and Urban Development.
Survivors include her husband, of the home; a son, Marvin Fondren, Fort Worth; five daughters, Mary Anderson, Hurst, Texas, Susie Earley, Duncan, Julene Kilpatrick, Oklahoma City, Lillie Scott and Patricia Castleberry, Ardmore; four sisters, Estelle Boyd, Loco, Rene Sullivan, Healdton, Rosie Griffith and Lavada Mills, Pinto; three brothers, J.D. Skeen, Peoria, Ariz., Bill Skeen, Duncan, and Henry Skeen, Countyline; 14 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jesse R. Fondren; a daughter, Lavergie Fondren; two brothers, Edward and James Skeen; and two sisters, Flo Jackson and Nettie Sessums.
Bearers will Greg Griffith, Dana Earley, Stacey Castleberry, Terry, Donnie and James Anderson.
Reser Funeral Home will direct services.
HEALDTON -- Funeral service for Anita "Sissy" Dyer, 42, will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 8, 1997, at the Healdton Assembly of God Church. The Rev. John Harris and the Rev. Tony Thomas will officiate with interment in Mount Olive Cemetery.
Miss Dyer died early Thursday morning, March 6, 1997, in the Healdton hospital.
The daughter of Robert Eugene Dyer and Geneva Mizer Dyer, she was born July 17, 1954, in Kermit, Texas, and had lived most of her life in Healdton. She attended the Healdton Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include her parents, Gene and Shirley Dyer, Healdton; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Eddie and Darrelyn Dyer, Oklahoma City, Raymond and Kena Crumley and family, Oklahoma City, Bill Crumley, Healdton, and Doug Crumley, Oklahoma City; her nieces, Paige and Malorie Dyer, Oklahoma City; her grandparents, Buck and Iona Dyer, Drumright, Okla.; aunts and uncles, Bill and Opal Wilburn, Healdton, Bob and Janet Noltensmeyer, Cushing, Okla., and Odessa Dyer, Drumright; and a host of cousins, friends and caretakers. She was preceded in death by her mother, Geneva, on Sept. 17, 1970; by her grandparents, Noah and Ethel Mizer and Allie Dyer; and aunt, Mary Cox; and two uncles, Willis and Ray Dyer.
Bearers will be Eddie Dyer, Raymond Crumley, Bill Crumley and Doug Crumley.
Services will be directed by Reser Funeral Home.
MARIETTA -- Services for Geneva Freeman, 85, were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Kennedy Funeral Home with Gary Labeth officiating. Interment was at Lakeview Cemetery.
Mrs. Freeman died March 5, 1997, in an Ardmore health care facility. She was born June 28, 1911, in Dexter, Texas, to Oscar and Mary L. Butts Pratt.
A resident of Love County most of her life, she married Rube Freeman March 3, 1928, in Marietta, and was a member of the Marietta Church of Christ. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband Aug. 19, 1980; and two brothers, J.B. Pratt, July 25, 1994; and Austin Pratt in 1925.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Jo Sharp,, Plano, Texas, Brenda Minyard, Yukon, Debbie McAbee, Lewisville, Texas; two sisters, Carrie York and Mary Cheek, Ardmore; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Bearers will be Jeffrey McAbee, Ken Goode, Kevin Campbell, Scott Vinson, Mark Labeth and Gary Smith. Honorary bearers are Jack Langford and Richard "Dude" Gale.
RAVIA -- Services for Janet Lee Mathis, 48 were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Ravia Church of God with Duane Nance officiating. Interment was at Ravia Cemetery under the direction of Watts Funeral Home.
Mrs. Mathis died March 4, 1997, in the Tishomingo hospital. She was born to Jeff R. and Anna B. Loveday Mathis May 8, 1948, at Ravia, and had lived here all her life. She was employed by Texas Instruments in the electronic assembly division.
Survivors include a son, Michael, Holdenville; and three sisters, Linda Burton, Duncan, Janell Mills, Ravia, and Jacquline Cheadle, Norman. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy and Jimmy Mathis; and two sisters, Rheta Plumlee and Barbara Benge.
DUNCAN -- Services for L.D. Hollingsworth, 81, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grantham Funeral Home. Interment will be at Duncan Cemetery.
Hollingsworth died March 6, 1997, in the local hospital. He was born Oct. 9, 1915, in Havana, Ark., to Guy L. and Erin Askew Hollingsworth.
He had lived in Duncan since 1965 and retired from Jones Oil Co. in 1986 after 50 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, the former Kathlyn Bice, of the home; a daughter, Sue Walker, Fox; two sons, Ronald, Mableton, Ga., and Charles, Haysville, Kan.; two brothers, Woodrow, Fittstown, and Guy, Springdale, Ark.; a sister, Winnie Gabbard, Fayettville, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
DAVIS -- Services for Cora E. McGee, 92, will be at 3 p.m. Monday at Joy Baptist Church with the Rev. Finis Steelman officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery, Wynnewood.
Born Feb. 3, 1905, in Fayetteville, Tenn., to Isom and Hester Key Smith, she died March 7, 1997, in a Davis health care facility. She married Will McGee on Dec. 27, 1919. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her children, Helen, Ralph, Bill and an infant son; and three brothers, Hosea, Lynn and Ernest.
Survivors include one son, Wayne McGee, Davis; two daughters, Jewell Gregory, Wynnewood, and Alice Thorp, Carrollton, Texas; two sisters, Emily Howell and Eunice McAlister, both Fayetteville; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services are under the direction of Fox Funeral Home.
FILLMORE -- Services for Pauline John Fillmore, 70, were Saturday at Freedom Fellowship Church with the Rev. Nelson Baken and Jerry Imotichey officiating. Graveside services followed at Sandy Creek Cemetery.
Born Sept. 6, 1926, in Fillmore to Tecumseh and Sallie Wolfe John, she died March 6, 1997, at Tishomingo. She married Richmond Fillmore on Nov. 10, 1948, in Fillmore. He preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Aaron John.
Mrs. Fillmore lived most of her life in Johnston County. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include one daughter, Sally Yellowfish, Dallas; one brother, Jack John, Tishomingo; one sister, Mary James, Fillmore; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Bearers were Gary John, Stephen John, Aaron Keel, Earnest J. Green, Travis John and Jeffrey Alberson.
Services were under the direction of Corbin Funeral Home.
