Memorial services for Laura Geraldine Massey Hemphill, 81, were combined with church services for her brother-in-law Odell Williams, at 10 a.m. Saturday at Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Wood officiating. Burney Cope and Leslie Forrest Massey assisted.
A longtime Carter County resident, Mrs. Hemphill was born Feb. 5, 1916, at Mesa, Ariz., to Ira Allen and Bertha Haney Massey. She died March 28, 1997, at a local hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Alton Irwin; her second husband, Col. James Hemphill, United States Army ret., and her two sons, MSgt. Van Allen Irwin and Johnnie Maurice Irwin.
Survivors include two stepchildren, Jerry Hemphill, Colorado, and Becky Courtney, Texas; and a sister, Norma Massey Williams, Ardmore.
Memorials may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Science and Research.
Services were under the direction of Craddock Funeral Home.
Services for retired Colonel Odell "O.D." Williams were combined with his sister-in-law's memorial service held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Wood and the Rev. Burney Cope officiating. Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Craddock Funeral Home.
Born May 23, 1917, near Wilson to Larkin Eugene "Pete" and Carrie Reeves Williams, he died March 26, 1997, at a local hospital at the age of 79 years, 10 months and three days. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Eugene and Billy Ray Williams.
Williams had been a resident of the Ardmore area most of his life. He served in the United States Army from 1940 to 1961, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Prisoner of War in Germany during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, World War II National Defense Medal, Oak Leaf Cluster and the World War II Victory Medal. While in the Korean Conflict, he received the Korean Service Medal and the Korean National Defense Medal.
He married Norma Massey on Sept. 16, 1941, at Berwyn. As a military couple, they lived throughout the world including such places as Trinidad, France, Virginia, Kansas, Washington, Missouri and California. They moved back to Ardmore in 1969 and lived on their farm.
Survivors include his wife, Norma, of the home; two sons, Col. Ronald N. Williams, Edwardsville, Ill, and Gerald R. Williams, San Antonio; two sisters, Wanda Barnum, Albuquerque, N.M., and Melba Wallace, Ardmore; four brothers, Ardell, Bakersfield, Calif., James, Tampa, Fla., Bobby Joe, Ardmore; and Doyle Williams, Fort Worth, Texas; two grandsons, Cadet Edward O. Williams, West Point, and Matthew G. Williams, Northwestern University, Ill.
FOLSOM -- Services for Robert Krebbs, 90, will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Freewill Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Johnson and Jerry Brown officiating. Interment will follow at Centerhill Cemetery near Coleman.
Born March 6, 1907, to John William and Provie Lee Nelson Krebbs, he died March 28, 1997. He married Ruth Hartwick on Aug. 14, 1928, at Durant. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by three sons, Verlan Dewayne Krebbs, 1970; Denver Arnold Krebbs, 1989; and Boyd Lynn Krebbs, 1992.
Krebbs was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Brown, Folsom, and Lucille Mauldin, Grand Prairie, Texas; three brothers, Mathew Krebbs, Stonewall, Hiawatha Krebbs and Luther Krebbs, both Shawnee; two sisters, Dessie Leoma Claborn and Fannie Miller, both Durant; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services are under the direction of Corbin Funeral Home, Tishomingo.
HOLDENVILLE -- Services for Thomas Nelson Chancellor, 80, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Holdenville Cemetery.
Born Sept. 13, 1916, at Fairview to Edmond Franklin and Lida Elizabeth Adkins Chancellor, he died March 29, 1997, at a Holdenville hospital. He married Rubye Jewel Morris on Nov. 14, 1936, at Holdenville. She preceded him in death on Jan. 26, 1997. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Lou, in 1953.
Chancellor was reared in Fairview and Yeager and attended Fairview schools. He began farming as a young man and in his later years worked in the oil fields and then in ranching. He attended The Church of God of Prophecy.
Survivors include three sons, Tommy Chancellor, Horntown, Jackie Lee Chancellor, Wewoka, and Terry Ray Chancellor, Healdton; one daughter, Sue Babb, Holdenville; one sister, Mertie Martin, California; two brothers, James Chancellor, Payette, Idaho, and Albert "Spec" Chancellor, Bakersfield, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
WILSON -- Graveside rites for Evelyn Jeanette Lindsay, 77, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hewitt Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Gillum officiating.
Born Feb. 6, 1920, at Elmira, N.Y., to Edwin P. and Vivian A. Klock Buckley, she died March 29, 1997, at the Ardmore hospital.
Mrs. Lindsay was reared in Duncan. She moved to the Wilson area in the early 1950s.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Burris, Wilson; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Bearers are Wayne Russell, Steve Cox and Claude and Jimmy Burris.
Services are under the direction of Alexander Funeral Home.
Graveside services for Alene Butler, 85, will be Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. in Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Smith officiating.
The daughter of the late Martin and Mary Oda Hawkins Allgood, she was born Aug. 24, 1911, in Little Rock, Ark., and passed away March 29, 1997, in a local nursing facility following an extended illness.
Reared in Ardmore, she attended Jefferson Elementary School and Ardmore High School She married James Ira Butler June 28, 1931, in Ardmore. He preceded her in death March 9, 1974. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by a son and his wife, Don and Marilyn Butler of Pampa, Texas; a brother, V.J. "Bud" Allgood of Stanton, Calif.; a sister, Wynema Brown of Tulsa, Okla.; two grandsons, Mike, and his wife, Teresa Butler, of Broken Arrow, and Randy Evers of Oklahoma City; and two great-grandsons, Christopher and James Butler. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kay Evers, Oct. 29, 1979.
Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels or a favorite charity.
Services will be under the direction of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home.
Private funeral services for Guss Wheeler, 103, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Kirk Chapel. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles under the direction of Conner-Johnson Funeral Home.
Wheeler was born Jan. 29, 1894, in Hempville, Texas. He died March 28, 1997, in the local hospital.
He moved to Ardmore from California with his daughter in 1988.
He is survived by a daughter, Amanda Bomar, Ardmore; 13 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 23 great-great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife and five children.
Kirk-Dawson-Dillard Funeral Home will direct local services.
FOX -- Services for Esther O'Dell Dixon, 95, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fox Baptist Church with the Rev. Bob Keck officiating. Interment will be at Dixie Cemetery, north of Ringling.
Mrs. Dixon died March 30, 1997, in an Oklahoma City health care facility. She was born Sept. 4, 1901, at Springfield, Mo., to Robert L. and Sarah Warden O'Dell.
She came to Carter County with her family in 1905 and attended school at Buckhorn, Chagris and Rock Springs. She married Jerry P. Dixon Nov. 23, 1919, in Chagris after he served in World War I, and they lived in Seminole several years before moving back to the Healdton area in 1962. She was preceded in death by her husband April 18, 1978. She was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Survivors include four sons, P.J., Casper, Wyo., Troy, Healdton, Bob, Tuttle, and James, Muskogee; three daughters, Eullah Jeffers, Borger, Texas, Nancy Gilbreath, Oklahoma City, and Sue Jackson, Houston; two half sisters, Jurlie Stewart, Healdton, and Ruby O'Dell, Ringling; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carmelita Miller; half sister, Nellie O'Dell; and three granddaughters.
Bearers will be grandsons, Dennis, Jerry, Mark and Scott Dixon, Bill Jeffers, David and Kent Miller.
Reser Funeral Home will direct services.
RAVIA -- Services for Opal Vay Hurst, 84, were scheduled for 2 p.m. today at the Ravia Church of God with J.E. Freeman officiating. Interment was at Ravia Cemetery under the direction of Watts Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hurst died March 30, 1997, at her home in Ravia after a short illness. She was born Nov. 5, 1912, at Bromide.
She had lived in Johnston County all her life and was a member of Ravia Church of God. She and William Pink Hurst were married Jan. 19, 1935. He preceded her in death Jan. 24, 1994.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, among them, Mary Don Parks and Pam Walton, Ravia, and Wynona Gower, Marlow.
Bearers were Danny McGhee, Dickie Hartman, Jack Maxwell, Dan Shaffer, James Gastineau and Bill Box. Honorary bearers were Fletcher Wheeler, Keith Chessman and David Scarberry.
VELMA -- Services for Patsy J. Maxwell were held at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, April 1, 1997, at the Countryside Freewill Baptist Church in Velma with the Rev. Carroll Milner officiating. Burial was at the new Velma Cemetery under the direction of Milburn Funeral Home, Ratliff City.
Patsy Jean Maxwell, 50, of Velma, Okla., lost her 12-year battle with cancer on Sunday, March 30, 1997, at her home.
She was born Aug. 23, 1946, in Siloam Springs, Ark., to Claudia B. Reed and the late Clarence M. "Jack" Crowder.
She graduated from Gentry High School, Gentry, Ark., class of 1964. She also attended Ozark Bible College in Joplin, Mo. She married Charles F. Maxwell Jr. on Dec. 24, 1974. They moved to Ratliff City in 1975. Pat worked at several area restaurants ad owned and operated the Country Kitchen Cafe in Ratliff City, the Village Inn and J & P's Cafe in Velma. It was through her line of work that she met so many wonderful and caring friends. Charles is the manager of Gordon White Lumber Co., in Ratliff City, and the mayor of Velma.
Pat loved to spend her time working with arts and crafts, fishing area lakes, and playing card games. She also enjoyed holidays and family reunions. Pat contributed to her community and the church and was a member of the Countryside Free Will Baptist Church. Pat was admired by those that knew and loved her for her openness, honesty, kindness, hard work and dedication to her family. She will be forever loved and missed.
Survivors include her husband, Charles F. Maxwell Jr.; and her two daughters and their families, Mrs. Gina Renee Maxwell Henry and her husband Bill, daughter, Braylee, and son, Justin, of Lindsay, Okla.; Mrs. Valerie Lee Maxwell Richardson and husband DeWayne, and daughter, Jayden, of Velma, Okla.; her parents, Ellis and Claudia Reed of Gentry, Ark.; her sisters, Iris Sutherland of Tulsa, and Violet Wheeler of Cleveland, Okla. She is also survived by a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother, Billy J. Crowder.
Bearers were Chad Williams, Bill Carter, Charlie Weeaks, Bruce Lynn, Doyne Wofford and Harold Love.
VERNON, Texas -- Graveside rites for former Ardmore resident Harry Jesse Jeffus will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at East View Cemetery in Vernon, Texas.
Jeffus died March 30, 1997, in Midland, Texas. He was born June 22, 1911, in Beaver County, to Jesse and Eunice Jeffus.
He married Eva Mae Sparks May 25, 1931, in Oklahoma, and served with the Army Air Corps as a B-17 gunner during World War II. He was an auto mechanic and had lived in Midland since 1995.
Survivors are two daughters, Mary A. Tempero, Capitola, Calif., and Juanita Wollaston, Midland; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, April 16, 1996, and a son, Lynn Ray.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to charity.
Ellis Funeral Home will direct services.
Funeral services for Della V. Sigler will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 3, 1997, in McClure Chapel at First United Methodist Church. Dr. Wade Paschall and the Rev. Dan Patman will officiate. Interment will be at Rose Hill Cemetery under the direction of Craddock Funeral Home.
Mrs. Sigler was born Oct. 3, 1922, at Brock, to George and Josie Stafford Porter. She died March 31, 1997, in Mercy Memorial Hospital following a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of the Ardmore area, she was married to John J. Sigler here on Nov. 15, 1940. He preceded her in death on Sept. 13, 1979. She retired from Memorial Hospital as a ward clerk after 20 years of service. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Methodist Women's Club, Cora Carlock Sunday school class and Care Corp.
Survivors include a son, Guy H. "Buddy" Sigler II, and his wife, Linda Sigler, Ardmore; a daughter, Sharon Knowles, and her husband, the Rev. Jim Knowles, Seminole; two sisters, Millie Mapp, Fort Worth, Texas, and Georgia Estes, Burleson, Texas; and three grandchildren, Heather Knowles, Seminole, Matthew Sigler and John J. "J.J." Sigler, Ardmore. She was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Pall bearers will be Avon Barber, Ray Knight, Frank Schaaf, Bill Mullinex, Buddy Morton and Andy Monson.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church building fund or memorial fund.
Graveside rites for William Henry Lakey, Tulsa, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Memorial Park with the Rev. LeRoy Holman officiating.
Lakey died March 29, 1997, in a Tulsa health care center. He was born Sept. 5, 1913, in Oklahoma, to William and Mittie Lakey.
He was a retired carpenter and of the Church of Christ faith.
He is survived by a son, Tommy, Lewisvile, Texas; daughter, Nancy Chambers, Conroe, Texas; brother, John; and sister, Muriel Arnold, Oklahoma City; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
