Helen Gholston, Clinton’s reigning Citizen of the Year and a major benefactor to city and school projects, died this morning at her home. She was 98.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under direction of the Kiesau Marler Funeral Home.
Mrs. Gholston’s late husband, Mark, was a former Clinton mayor.
In recent years she had made major donations to jump-start construction of the children’s playground at Acme Brick Park and purchase of the Centennial mini-train that now runs through the park. She also made a significant contribution to the Clinton Public Schools Foundation.
All together, her donations to the three entities totaled $425,000.
But as civic leader David Berrong said in presenting her the 2003 Citizen of the Year Award last October, her contributions were more than gifts. They were “challenges that brought out the best” in the rest of the community.
All her donations were contingent on the community contributing something as well, either in matching funds or labor.
In the case of the Public Schools Foundation, her $50,000 was matched by nearly $100,000 from other donors, so that almost $150,000 was added to the foundation’s coffers as a result of her largesse.
Seventeen months ago, she contributed $50,000 to help buy the mini-train for the park; and she put an additional $200,000 in escrow, to also be donated if the rest of the community would raise an equal amount to build a 1.1-mile track for the train to run on. The matching money was raised in less than 45 days.
Berrong said the total of $250,000 that Mrs. Gholston contributed toward the train was the largest single gift from an individual in Clinton’s now-100-year history.
Earlier, in 1998, it had been Gholston money that really got Acme Park rolling. She first contributed $25,000 anonymously, then gave another $100,000 with the stipulation that it be used to build a youth activity center. With her consent, the City Council eventually decided to use the money to finance construction of the children’s playground on condition that other citizens would furnish “sweat equity” and do the actual work.
Again the goal was accomplished, with 714 volunteers braving rain and mud to build the playground in five days and nights. It was subsequently named the M.T. and Helen Gholston Children’s Playground.
“I like to put my money where it will do some good,” Mrs. Gholston said in September of 1998, when she made the $100,000 donation. “We need something for the kids to do so they won’t be on the streets causing trouble. Boys are kind of like mules. If they aren’t busy, they get into trouble.
“I like kids. They are a lot more important than money to me. I just want to do this for the good it will do.”
Mrs. Gholston had lived in Clinton for more than 55 years. In 1912, as a small girl, she had moved with her parents to a farm 10 miles west of Custer City.
Her husband raised cattle and horses on more than 5,000 acres of ranch land and was also a master woodworker.
“Mark loved being mayor, and he loved building things,” she once said of him. “He served as mayor until his doctor told him he couldn’t do it anymore because of health reasons.”
Complete biographical information about Mrs. Gholston was not available today. It will be contained in a formal obituary to be published Friday.
