Warkentin services set at 2:11 pm

Memorial services for H. Irwin (H.I.) Warkentin, age 92 of Corn, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Corn Mennonite Brethren Church with pastor Ken Gardner (and perhaps pastor Leonard Vogt) officiating.

Warkentin died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at Corn. He was born on Aug. 24, 1911 on the family farm north of Corn, the son of Henry J. (H.J.) and Anna (Leppke) Warkentin.

He attended Grandview School for the first eight grades before graduating from Corn Bible Academy.

Warkentin was a lifelong member of the Corn Mennonite Brethren Church, having been baptized at the age of 19.

He married the former Edna Janzen on Aug. 8, 1937, a union that lasted for 49½ years.

Warkentin was the oldest surviving member of “The Gospel Team” ministry that traveled around to churches in neighboring towns and to the Oklahoma City Rescue Mission.

He taught a variety of Sunday school classes and filled in at the nursing home for many years.

Warkentin was a farmer, raising wheat, cotton and dairy cattle until his retirement in 1975. He sold his farm equipment at age 82. For three years he lived in a retirement apartment at Weatherford prior to moving into Corn Heritage Village in 1999.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents and his wife, Edna, were three sons, Floyd, Wayne and Wendell, who died as toddlers; a brother, Gerald Roland; four sisters; and a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Warkentin.

Interment will be in a cemetery at Corn under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Survivors include daughters, Frances Gathright and her husband, Jack, of Oklahoma City, Rowena Rhodes and her husband, Carl, of Corn; sons, Richard Warkentin of Concord, Calif., Michael Warkentin and his wife, Georgia, of Norman; granddaughter, Brianna Auge and her husband, Ethan; great granddaughters, Elleanna Faye of Weatherford, Margaret Gathright of Oklahoma City; a grandson, Jeffrey Gathright and his wife, Shelli, of Oklahoma; three sisters, Martha Pass of Stillwater, Ruth Fourier nof Chico, Calif., Viola Huebert and her husband, Allen, of Reedley; and many nieces and nephews.

Rites slated for Williams at 2:10 pm
A come-and-go “Celebration of Life” service for Leland “Lee” Ray Williams, age 66 of Custer City, will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Custer City Lee Funeral Home.
Williams died just after noon on Friday, Aug. 13, at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born on Dec. 17, 1938 in Denver, Colo., the son of Merle and Lellian Williams.

Growing up in the Denver area, he moved to Custer
City in 1977 where he owned and operated his own auto
body shop.

He loved to play bass guitar and working at his shop.

Survivors include two daughters, Rhonda Cloud and Denna Hutson, both of Wichita, Kan.; two sons, Landon Williams of Wyoming, Robert Williams of Custer City; a sister, Lanna Williams of Salina, Kan.; a brother, Albert Williams of Denver, Colo.; six grandchildren; and a great grandchild.

Earney rites set at 1:36 pm

Funeral services for John Earney, age 68, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, in the cemetery at Canute.

Earney died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004. Arrangements are under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Rick Shepard services held at 1:35 pm
A memorial service for Richard “Rick” Shepard, age 70 of San Antonio, Texas was held Saturday, Aug. 7, at the Alamo Heights First Christian Church there.
Shepard died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004. He was born on Nov. 18, 1933 at a home near Custer City, the son of Glen and Doris Shepard.

He grew up on the family farm and attended the Custer City Schools where he graduated as valedictorian of his class in 1952.

Shepard became a member of the Christian Church in Custer City where his grandmother had been a charter member.

After graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. While serving in France and Germany he married Claire, and their union lasted for 46 years.

Shepard also served in Thailand and Korea during the Vietnam War. He retired after 20 years of service with the rank of master sergeant.

He then went to work installing and repairing medical equipment in hospitals, retiring from this work after 22 years.

Over the years, Shephard helped to build two houses for Habitat for Humanity. He was an active member of the Alamo Heights Christian Church since 1974 and served faithfully as a deacon for many years.

Recently, the church conferred on him the honor of Deacon Emeritus.

His mother preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Claire; his children, Johnny Vanags and his wife, Bobbie, Cora Pitmon and her husband, Steve, all of San Antonio, Texas, and “Kiki” Yanez and her husband, Jerry, and their children, Chad and Austin, of Raleigh, N.C.; his father, Glen Shjepard and his wife Mary and his sister, Clo Ann Hutchinson and her husband, Gene, of Custer City; and a brother, Gene Shepard and his wife, Edel, of Burneyville.

Laura Swift's rites Monday at 1:35 pm
Funeral services for Laura M. Swift, age 84 of Cordell, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, at the Fourth and College Church of Christ in Cordell.
Swift, who was executive secretary for the American Red Cross for 38 years, died Thursday morning, Aug. 12, 2004, at Integris Clinton Regional Hospital.

Burial will be in the Lawnview Cemetery at Cordell under the direction of the Jack Loftiss Funeral Home in Cordell.

Services set for Hamman at 1:41 pm

Funeral services for Thelma Hamman, age 99 of Covington, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Covingrton.

Hamman died early Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, at the United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton. She was born on Aug. 17, 1904 in Branson, Mo. and was one week away from her 100th birthday. She was the daughter of Frank and Katherine Powell.

Hamman grew up in the Blair and Lugert area, graduating from high school there.

She moved to Enid with her family and earned a nursing degree in 1924 from the Enid Springs Sanitarium.

Serving as a nurse until she was 75 she continued to work as a private nurse until she was 90.

On Dec. 24, 1924 she married William “Bill” Hamman in Watonga. She was active in the Enid community, serving as a volunteer in the S.H.A.R.E. program until her 99th birthday.

Preceding her in death, in addition to her husband, were a daughter, Joyce Ayers; three sisters, Opal Pippinger, Eva Kennedy, Betty Shields; and four brothers, Orville, Ralph, Albert and Alfred Powell.

Burial will conclude in the Covington Cemetery under

the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in
Clinton.

Survivors include a brother, Wayne Powell and his wife, Rosemary, of Clinton; a sister, Dorothy Reed and her husband, Ward, of Bella Vista, Ark.; a special friend, Leona Lohse of Covington; and a host of nieces and nephews.

J.C. Sullivan rites Friday at 1:29 pm

Funeral services for J.C. Sullivan, age 77 of Burns Flat, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church at Burns Flat with pastor Loyd Hall and pastor Swane Mearns officiating.

Sullivon died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at the Integris Clinton Regional Hospital. He was born on March 19, 1927 in Clinton, the son of Frank L. and Lotus McDonald Sullivan.

He graduated from Foss High School, served in the U.S. Army, and was a member of the Elk City Roundup Club, Masons and Eastern Star.

He also was a charter member of the Southwestern Oklahoma Peace Officers Association.

He served as chief of police in Burns Flat for 31 years and was a longtime farmer and rancher.

Preceding him in death were his son, Marty Kent Sullivan; his parents; maternal grandparents, John and Lillian McDonald; and paternal grandparents, William and Agnes Sullivan.

Burial will follow in the Clinton Cemetery under the direction of the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Survivors include his wife, Delores, of the home; a brother, Frank Sullivan, Jr. and his wife, Hannie, of Vacaville, Calif.; and two nephews, Charley Sullivan of Fairfeld, Calif., Mike and Cheryl Sullivan of Davis, Calif.

Frank Shephard rites Saturday at 1:29 pm

A celebration of the life of Frankie “Frank” Shephard, Jr., age 70, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Arapaho Community Center.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery, Lane B.

Shephard died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004.

Survivors include his wife, Retta Shephard; daughters, Paula Beasley and Kristy Weda; sons-in-law, Kris Beasley, John Weda; grandchildren, J.P. and Brock Hamilton, Taylor and Bailey Weda; brothers, Robert, Buck and Bill Shephard; sister, JoAnn Barrick; and many nieces and nephews.

Sullivan dies at 1:56 pm

Funeral services for J.C. Sullivan of Burns Flat will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Burns Flat.

A full obituary is planned for release by the Kiesau-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton on Wednesday.

Donna Mann services set at 1:57 pm

Funeral services for Donna M. Mann, age 80 of Clinton, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the Meacham Memorial Chapel of the First Baptist Church in Clinton with Rev. Doug Lewis officiating.

Mann died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton. She was born on July 26, 1924 in Cherokee, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Bertha (Tatroe) Hagan.

She spent her early years in Omaha, Neb., graduating from high school there.

On June 2, 1945, she married Donald L. Mann in Omaha. He was employed with the Civil Service, and the couple traveled the world with his work.

When he retired in 1983, they settled in Clinton to be near their family. He preceded her in death in 1985.

Very active in such volunteer activities as the Hospital Auxiliary and Meals on Wheels, she was a member of the First Baptist Church where she sang in the Just Older Youth (J.O.Y.) and Adult Choirs.

Also preceding her in death were a daughter, Jacqueline Waltrip; a brother, Donald Hagan; and a sister, Imogene Peterson.

Burial will conclude in the Arapaho Cemetery under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Survivors include a granddaughter, Yvette Johnson and her husband, James, of Clinton; a son-in-law, Jerry Waltrip and his wife, Sharla, of Arapaho; two sisters, Mariann Sheldon and Lois Curtis, both of Omaha, Neb.; and a brother, Ronald Hagan of Cove, Ore.

Carmichael dies at 100 at 2:31 pm
Funeral services for Rubie Helen Carmichael, age 100 of Clinton and formerly of Clovis, N.M., will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 8, in the Central Baptist Church at Clovis with Rev. Terrill Mitchell and Rev. Shayne Childers officiating.

Carmichael died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at Integris Clinton Regional Hospital. She was born on Nov. 12, 1903 in Rush Springs, the second oldest of 10 children born to Joe and Elizabeth (Sanders) Beevers.

The family moved to Quay County, N.M. in 1907 and homesteaded in the Forrest community.

She attended school there and in Clovis before graduating from Portales High School in 1923 as the valedictorian of her class.

On Oct. 28, 1922 she married Oliver Carmichael in Farwell, Texas.

After earning a degree from New Mexico Highlands in 1940 she became a teacher. She went on to do graduate work at Eastern New Mexico University. Carmichael taught for 37 years in Field, Floyd and Melrose before retiring in 1967.

During her career, Carmichael was named Teacher of the Year and to the National Education Association Southeastern District Hall of Fame and to the New Mexico State Hall of Fame.

Her son, Doug, had a distinguished career in World War II in the Army as a member of the 509th Bomber Squadron, tragically losing his life in 1947.

Her husband, Oliver, preceded her in death in 1965.

She attended University Baptist Church in Portales, N.M. She was a charter member of the Zeta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

Preceding her in death, along with her parents, husband and son, were sisters, Pauline Beevers, Myrtle Brown, Thelma Pruitt; and brothers, Glen Beevers, Bill Beevers, Jake Beevers, Ardis Beevers and Harold Beevers.

Local arrangements are under the direction of the Kiesau-Marler Funeral Home in Clinton. The family will have lunch and receive guests at the Central Baptist Church in Clovis, N.M. at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Survivors include a daughter, Chloe Mitchell and her husband, Terrill, of Clinton; grandchildren, Marla Childers and her husband, Shayne, of Clovis, N.M., Terra Greer and her husband, Eric, of Portales, N.M., Shantel Mitchell of Shawnee, Alissa Mitchell and KyLeigh Mitchell, both of Clinton; great grandchildren, Blayne Childers, RyLeigh Greer; brothers, Carol Beevers of Logan, N.M., Gene Beevers and his wife, Jennie, of Farmington, N.M.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests that those who desire may make memorial contributions in her honor to the building fund of the First Baptist Church in Clinton.

Bob Gilbert services set at 2:34 pm

Funeral services for Bobby “Bob” T. Gilbert, age 73 of Clinton, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Christ at 2601 Custer Ave. with Doyle Kinney officiating.

Bobby Thomas Gilbert was born on Nov. 19, 1930, the son of Johnny and Maureen (Gilpatrick) Gilbert, and died Thursday morning, Aug. 5, 2004, at his Clinton home.

Reared in Altus, he attended school there until he moved with his family to Sayre during his junior year.

He graduated from Sayre High School in 1948, having excelled in athletics and being selected as an All-Stater in football his senior year.

He continued his education at the University of Arkansas on a football scholarship, completing two years of college before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950.

He served two years during the Korean War before returning to Southwestern State College after his honorable discharge. He played football for the Southwestern Bulldogs and received his degree in physical education and industrial arts.

On June 5, 1954 he married Miss BobE Melvin at Wheeler, Texas. The young couple made their home in Amarillo, Texas where he worked as a jet mechanic.

They returned to Oklahoma, settling in Clinton in 1959. Gilbert worked for Jantzen Sporting Goods, Dunlop Sporting Goods of Oklahoma City and Larry Black Sporting Goods of Enid. He was employed by Bill Scoreboard Sporting Goods of Lawton at the time of his death.

Gilbert was a member of the Church of Christ, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Burial will conclude in the Clinton Cemetery under the direction of the Stanley-Lee Funeral Home in Clinton.

Survivors include his wife, BobE, of the home; two sons, Steve Gilbert and his wife and Brad Gilbert and his wife, all of Canute; four grandchildren, Randy Gilbert of Checotah and his mother, Kathy Nichols of Cordell, Jessica Gilbert of Edmond, Jenny Gilbert and Rowdy Gilbert, both of Weatherford, and their mother, Brenda Lumpkin of Weatherford; a niece, Patty Vermillion and her husband, Larry, of Elk City; and a nephew, Danny Haggard of Elk City.
