Hattie was born Sept. 18, 1910, in Cherokee County, near Tahlequah, OK the daughter of Reuben Maynard and Amanda (Lokey) Maynard and died Monday, Dec. 17, 2007, at The Commons.
She married John Leroy “Roy” Sparks Sept. 8, 1926 in Tahlequah. They moved to Enid in 1927. He preceded her in death Oct. 21, 1989.
Hattie worked as a saleslady for a few years but was a homemaker most of her life. For many years, she took in elderly women boarders and cared for them. During the depression years, they shared what little they had with neighbors and friends because Roy was one of the lucky ones who had a job at Champlin Refinery. She was a generous, faith-filled, loving person who will be dearly missed. Hattie enjoyed quilting, embroidering, and crocheting and giving her handmade items as gifts to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
She was a member of First Assembly of God Church for many years and served as Sunday school and Bible School teacher. Her children and grandchildren loved to hear her reminisce about times long ago and the changes she had seen in her life-time. She amazed us right up to the end with her memory of many stories from her life and how she could recall details and names of who lived where in her neighborhood on the east side.
She is survived by two daughters, Mildred Frank of Cresswell, Ore., and Sue Garis and her husband Don of Enid; three sons, Leroy Sparks of Enid, John Sparks and his wife Sandra of Enid, and Kenneth Sparks and his wife Alice of Enid; two sons-in-law, David Tribble and Ralph Cornish, both of Enid; 23 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Leroy Sparks; two daughters, Arduth Tribble and Joyce Cornish; a daughter-in-law, Ruby Sparks; a son-in-law, Murvel Frank; one great-grandson, Michael Wellman; seven sisters; and eight brothers.
