The funeral for James “Jim” G. Helterbrake “Hildy” Sr., 89, of Enid will be 2 p.m. Saturday in Oakwood Christian Church. Dr. Joe Wilson will officiate. Byron Bishop and Len Coulter will assist. Burial will be in Good Hope Cemetery, Helena. Arrange-ments are by Hen-ninger-Allen Funeral Home.
He was born June 6, 1918, in Curtis, Ohio, to Orma and Lena Kutcher Helterbrake and died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, in St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Enid.
He attended Catholic schools in Oregon and Ohio and graduated from Gibson-burg, Ohio, high school in 1936. He began work as a truck driver and a baker at a young age. He was drafted into the Army at the start of World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater. He married Jeneva Horner in 1942 in Fort Sill. He was honorably discharged as a master sergeant in 1945. He returned to Ohio, where he was a carpenter. He moved to Chester where he farmed and worked for Major County. In 1965, he was a nursing home administrator in Helena. He married Winnie Krob July 30, 1971, in Helena. They lived in Enid where he worked for C.R. Anthony’s for 17 years until retirement.
Surviving are his wife, Winnie, of the home; four daughters, Helen Hickman of Vici, Connie Price of Chester, Myna Pendleton of Enid and Paula Helterbrake of Chester; two sons, Jim Helterbrake Jr., of Enid and Jeff Helterbrake of Chester; three stepchildren, Len Coulter of Aline, Loretta Coulter of Enid and Myron Coulter of Aline; two sisters, Marcelle Hille and Blanche Schimming, of Genoa, Ohio; one brother, Harv of Toledo, Ohio; 26 grandchildren; and 44 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the charity of one’s choice.
The funeral for Bart Vincent Appleton, 58, of Buffalo will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Buffalo. The Revs. Jerry Hodges and Mike Barton will officiate. Burial will be in High Point Cemetery, Buffalo. Arrange-ments are by Myatt Funeral Home, Buffalo. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He was born Aug. 22, 1949, at Harrodsburg, Ky., to Vincent Braly and Olive Margaret Powell Appleton and died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center.
He graduated from Kingfisher High School in 1967 and received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Oklahoma, Norman . He was a member of First Baptist Church, Buffalo, Sierra Club and Buffalo Senior Citizens.
Surviving are his mother, Olive Margaret Appleton of Buffalo; one brother, Marty Weaver Appleton of Alva; and one sister, Margaret Ann Barger of Kansas City, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his father, Vincent Braly Appleton.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home, Box 749, Buffalo, OK 73834, to Buffalo Ministerial Alliance.
A memorial service for John Patrick “Pat” Cook, 67, of Woodward will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Nichol-Zwanziger Chapel, Wood-ward. Phil Kenny will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.
He was born May 4, 1940, to John J. and Irene G. Jenson Cook in Russell, Kan., and died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2008, at Woodward Regional Hospital, Wood-ward.
He lived in McPherson, Kan., in the 1930s and moved often while his father worked for different oil-related companies. He attended school in several Kansas towns, graduating from Kiowa High School in 1958.
He married Sharon Miller in 1960. He was active in community affairs and belonged to Jaycees, Kiwanis, Legion of the Moose and Petroleum Institute. He was a parts manager and service manager for Ford and John Deere dealers in Kansas and Oklahoma, and field supervisor for Hawkeye Inspection Co. He worked the last 19 years at Weatherford International ALS, Wood-ward. He married Willa June Peard, Feb. 25, 1985.
Surviving are his wife, Willa June, of the home; two sons, Michael Cook of Palm City, Fla., and Chad Cook of Tampa, Fla.; one stepdaughter, Carol Jacks of Woodward; one stepson, David Jacks of Goddard, Kan; and two grandchildren.
A graveside service for Rena Jo Hurst Bruning, 74, will be 1 p.m. Saturday, in the Garber Cemetery. Steve Littrell, pastor will officiate. Arrangements are by Dugger funeral Home, Garber.
She was born Feb. 14, 1933, to Floyd and Rena Barnes Hurst and died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at Phillips County Hospital, Phillipsburg, Kan.
The Hurst family lived in Garber and moved to Phillipsburg, Kan., in 1938, where she attended schools. She married Charles Bruning and they made their home in Cambridge, Neb., where they raised racing horses.
After her husband died, she returned to Phillipsburg and worked at Phillips County Retirement Center 17 years. She worked at Cottonwood Inn and Long Term Care as a housekeeper and laundry aide. She also worked for Ken Lipprand Janitorial Service.
Surviving are her sister, Phyllis Keim of Glade, Kan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.
The funeral for Mae E. Reeves, 91, of Kingfisher will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sanders Funeral Service Chapel, Kingfisher. Burial will be in Kingfisher Cemetery.
She was born Feb. 11, 1916, in Van Wart, Iowa, to Artful A. and Abbie L. Hax and died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, Enid.
She married Charles W. Reeves Feb. 25, 1937, in Oklahoma City. She was a member of First Southern Baptist Church, Kingfisher, and Busy Bee Club.
Surviving are three grandchildren.
Besides her husband, Charles, she was preceded in death by one son.
A graveside service for Marla Alane Preston, 47, of Enid will be at a later date at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Goltry. She was cremated at her family’s request. Arrangements are by Henninger-Allen Funeral Home.
She was born Aug. 29, 1960, in Enid to Charles A. “Bud” and Bertha Ann Severin Preston and died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center.
She made her home at NORCE.
Surviving are her father and stepmother, Bud and Karen Preston of North Enid; two sisters, Marsha Marquis and Marcia Vickers, both of Ft. Worth, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her mother and one sister.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.
The funeral service for James Howard Gungoll, 70, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at the Enid Mennonite Brethren Church. The Rev. Garvie Schmidt will officiate with Father Kevin Ratterman in attendance. Burial will be in the Enid Mennonite Brethren Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
James was born on May 28, 1937, to Henry and Thelma Gungoll in Enid, Oklahoma, and died Jan. 16, 2008, in Oklahoma City. He attended Enid public schools before graduating from high school at the Oklahoma Military Academy (OMA) in Claremore, Oklahoma, in 1955. He received a bachelor degree from Oklahoma State University in 1960, a bachelor of divinity from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific in 1969, and a law degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1972. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity.
He was a local businessman and attorney. Up until the time of his death, he was the managing partner of Henry Gungoll Associates LLC, oil and natural gas producers. He served previously as an Oklahoma state legislator from 1962-1964 and as an Oklahoma highway commissioner from 1975-1980. He was a member of the Oklahoma Bar Association (OBA).
His community activities included being a member of Gideons International. He previously served on the boards of First National Bank of Enid (1979-84) and St. Mary’s Hospital (1980-1984), and as president of the Great Salt Plains Boy Scout Council (1978-80). He was a member of the Enid Mennonite Brethren Church.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Aggas Gungoll; two sons, Steven Howard Gungoll, of Santa Barbara, California, and Timothy James Gungoll and his wife, Deborah Bill Gungoll, of Enid; his daughter, Christina Gungoll Lepore and her husband, John Lepore, of Brussels, Belgium; three grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth, Rebekah and Andrew Gungoll, of Enid; one sister, Catherine Gungoll Hughes and her husband, James Hughes, of Broken Arrow; his brother-in-law, James Finnegan and his wife, Claudia Finnegan, of Enid; a niece, Stephanie Moore, of Tulsa; and four nephews, Phil Finnegan of Tulsa, Mike Finnegan and his wife, Krista Finnegan, of Dallas, Doug Finnegan and his wife, Amy Finnegan, of Enid, and Brian Moore, of Tulsa.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Robert Gungoll; and his sister, Brenda Gungoll Finnegan.
Memorials may be made to Gideons International, the Cimarron Council Boy Scouts of America or the Enid Mennonite Brethren Church with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home as custodian of the funds.
Mildred Lavon Jackson Lisle, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend, went to be with the Lord on January 16, 2008, surrounded by her family in Edmond, Oklahoma. Mildred was 81. Mildred and her husband, Kenneth E. Lisle, were residents of Edmond, Oklahoma.
Mildred, known to her friends as “Millie” and her family as “MeMe,” was born in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, on December 6, 1926, to Lon Tyler and Inez Graham Jackson. She grew up in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, and graduated from Sapulpa High School in 1944. She graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in business administration in 1948. During her college years, she was president of Alpha Phi Sorority. It was at OU that she met her future husband Kenneth. Mildred and Kenneth were married in Sapulpa, Oklahoma, on January 25, 1948, when they were both seniors at OU. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on January 25th of this year. Kenneth and Mildred lived in Enid, Oklahoma, for 50 years and raised their family there. They were long-time, devoted members of the First Presbyterian Church in Enid, where Mildred spent many hours in volunteer work. Mildred, who her family describes as the “ideal mom,” enjoyed being a part of all of her children’s activities and creating a wonderful home for her family. She worked part-time for 15 years at C.M. Miller Gift Shop in Enid.
She was a long-time member and past president of Chapter Q PEO in Enid. During their years in Enid, Kenneth and Mildred developed many lifelong and cherished friends. In 2004, Kenneth and Mildred moved to Edmond, Oklahoma, to be closer to their children and grandchildren. They became members of the First Presbyterian Church in Edmond. Mildred transferred her PEO membership to Chapter FH in Edmond, and made many wonderful new friends. Mildred enjoyed spending her time in Bible study, playing bridge and reading. Her favorite activity, above all, was spending time with her family.
Mildred will be greeted in heaven by her father, Lon Tyler Jackson; her mother, Inez Graham Jackson; and her sisters, Reba Jackson Hinderer and Wilma Jackson Davidson. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Eugene Lisle, of the home; and their sons, Ken and his wife, Laurie; Mark and his wife, Candy; and Todd and his wife, Donna, all of Edmond. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Kelli and Coby Wilson, Chad and Angela Lisle, Tyler and Darin Kent, Stuart Lisle, Maddie Lisle, Jackson Lisle, Connor Lisle, Peter Schmidt, Maria Schmidt, Madeleine Schmidt, Jennie Davis, Courtney Garton; and great-grandchildren, Briley Wilson, Addison Wilson and Ryan Kent. Mildred leaves behind many loving friends as well.
Mildred was a woman who exuded kindness, warmth and class. Throughout her illness, she inspired her family and friends with her optimism, lack of complaint and selfless concern for others. She was genuinely interested in her family and friends, and always made each one feel special, loved and treasured. Her hallmark was her ability to listen and demonstrate how much she cared about each and every detail of the lives of her family, friends and acquaintances. She intuitively knew what others’ needs were and how to best serve them. Her non-judgmental spirit, loving disposition and acceptance of others was evidence of her godliness and Christian life.
Mildred will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. We are all comforted by Mildred’s faith and God’s assurance that Mildred is in heaven with Jesus, where we will all reunite someday.
Formal visitation with the family will be held today, January 18, from 6-8 p.m. at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond, Oklahoma.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Edmond, 1001 South Rankin, under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home. Burial services will follow at 3 p.m. in Enid at Memorial Park Cemetery in Enid, Oklahoma.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Edmond Building Fund, 1001 South Rankin, Edmond, Oklahoma 73034.
Calvin Houston, 83, retired oil field worker, and formerly of Valley Center, Kan., passed away Sunday, January 13, at Kansas Soldiers’ Home in Fort Dodge, Kan. He served and was a veteran of the U.S. Army and World War II.
He was born in Merrick, Oklahoma, to Lewis Houston and Lea Churchill Houston, who precede him.
He is preceded in death by his brothers, Lynn and Clifford Houston; and sister, Alice.
He is survived by his sons, Wayne and Beverly Houston, of Valley Center; step-son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Linda Fowble, of Ringwood, OK; grandchildren, Clayton Houston of Wichita, Jenny and Nate Sailer of Goddard; great-grandchild, Holden Sailer; former wife, Alberta Houston; sisters, Nellie and Jessie Neitman of Stillwater, OK, Ada Ruth Shaffer of Perkins, OK, Mildred Price of Tecumseh, OK, Velta Rummier of Yukon, OK; brothers, Glen Houston of Stillwater, OK, Lonnie Houston, of Perkins, OK.
Graveside will be in Iowa Chapel Cemetery, Perkins, Oklahoma, at 11 a.m. today. Pastor Merle Kinser officiating. Baker Funeral Home, Valley Center, (316) 755-2731.
The funeral for Julie Kaye Cade, 36, of Cleo Springs, will be 2 p.m. Sunday at United Methodist Church, Carmen. John Smith, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Carmen City Cemetery. Arrangements are by Went-worth’s Mortuary LLC, Carmen. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She was born April 10, 1971, in Enid to Lawrence Roy and Norma Marie Naugle and died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, in Enid.
She graduated from Carmen High School and later attended beauty school. She married Melvin Cade in December, 2004. She worked as a waitress and sheet metal worker. She worked the last few years at the Cleaning Closet. She lived in Alva before moving to Cleo Springs. She was a member of Alva Wesleyan Church.
Surviving are her husband, Melvin, of Alva; three children, LaTelle Graves, Henry Washing-ton and Henryetta Washington, all of Cleo Springs; her mother, Norma Naugle, of Cleo Springs; one brother, Kyle Naugle, of Enid; three sisters, Shelly Miller of Alva, Traci Naugle of Oklahoma City and Patricia Sorrentino of Fairview.
Memorials may be made through the funeral home to a trust for her children or for funeral expenses.
A memorial service for George Richard Wall, 61, of Enid, will be 2 p.m. Monday at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Don Johnson will officiate.
He was born July 5, 1946, in Enid to George W. and Jennie Wall and died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008, near Perry.
He graduated from Enid High School and later joined the Navy, serving two tours in Vietnam. He returned to Enid and worked in the oil field and later became a truck driver. The past few years he owned his own truck and worked contract hauling. He also worked for Advanced Food Company driving a truck. He was a member of Veterans of Foriegn Wars, Enid.
Surviving are his children, Scott Wall of Norman, Jennifer Wall of Enid and Terri Wall; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister.
