DURING THIS WEEK IN 1950, at least 1,000 high school seniors were expected at Senior Day at Southwestern college; Postmaster Raymond Frizzell said Weatherford mail deliveries in the residential area were to be reduced to one per day; and Weatherford FFA poultry judging team, Donald Amen, Delbert Amen and Leon Schapansky, placed first in the district contest. DURING THIS WEEK IN 1980, Barry Toma won first place medal in the 89er Free Style Wrestling Tournament in Mustang; Brian Adler was named the winner of the Chester H. Westfall memorial journalism scholarship at the University of Oklahoma; and Joe Merchant and Ken Holstrom took office, as city commissioners in Wards 2 and 4, after running uncontested for the seats. DURING THIS WEEK IN 1996, Weatherford Middle School students Amanda Brashears, Jacqie Dancer and Krystal Sauer were named winners in the OCTE writing contest; Southwestern beat Northwestern, 7-2, in a men’s tennis dual in Alva; and Emily Price, daughter of Tony and Paula Price of Weatherford, danced the lead role in the Western Oklahoma Ballet Theatre’s Spring Gala. Tuesday December 9, 1997 DURING THIS WEEK in 1949, Claude Foreman, owner operator of the Foreman cleaners, was appointed as a member of the board for the State Cleaners and Dyers association; Weatherford was designated as the voting place for districts F, G, M and N in the cotton marketing quota referendum; and Miss Bess Means entertained members of the LaHoma club and one special guest. DURING THIS WEEK in 1979, Diane Miller was the Personnel of the Week at West Elementary; Mrs. Mary Ralls, Weatherford Librarian, announced her retirement after being the Librarian since the opening in April of 1966; and Mr. and Mrs. David Warkentin of Colony announced the birth of their daughter Hilary Marie. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Christen Carman, East Elementary second grader, placed first in the Deer Creek Conservation District poster contest; Roxie Camden made 14 points as the freshman Lady Eagles won a championship semifinal 50-19 over Carnegie; and Clinton claimed the 4A crown in football over the Weatherford Eagles. Sunday December 7, 1997 DURING THIS WEEK in 1950, Mrs. Raymond Frizzell announced the sale of Owl Photo Company to Lon Hoffman the high for the past seven days was a hot 77 degrees, and hostesses for the Weatherford Parent-Teacher Association meeting were Mrs. Wilbur Hays, Mrs. Leo Newman, Mrs. Letha Spann and Mrs. Paul Verhines. DURING THIS WEEK in 1980, James and Donna Moore announced the birth of their son James Allen; J.M. Krocher celebrated his 90th birthday; and Oliver Davis was elected chairman of the Community Improvement Council during an organizational meeting of the group. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, WHS Football Player of the Week for Offense was Eric Wright; Ed Crall, Thomas area Farmer, was selected to participate in Class VII of the Oklahoma Agriculture Leadership Program; and 8-year-old Krysten Thiessen provided entertainment during Christmas in Weatherford activities downtown. Wednesday January 14, 1998 DURING THIS WEEK in 1946, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Meeks opened the Weatherford Studio on North Custer; Paul Cunningham returned home as a civilian after more than two years of service in the Army; and L. F. Dawson was elected president of the Custer-Washita Bankers Association. DURING THIS WEEK in 1948, Edward Bartolina became the southwestern division manager for Consolidated Gas Utilities Corporation; the Proberien and the Mothers Study club sponsored the March of Dimes campaign; and St. James Chapel was dedicated. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Timmy Ray made 36 points to lead Weatherford to an 82-71 win over Oklahoma Christian in the Clinton Shootout consolation championship game; Chad Roberts at 189 was one of six Weatherford High School placers at the Watonga Invitational Wrestling Tournament; and the Noon Lions Club Students of the Month for January were WHS seniors Nathan Hawkins and Rita Jones. Tuesday January 13, 1998 DURING THIS WEEK in 1942, a countywide farm meeting was called to outline the war program for farmers; NYA began a radio drive for the boys in the service; and the movie "The Land of the Free" was shown at the Rotary Club meeting. DURING THIS WEEK in 1944, the Ministerial Alliance sponsored a drive for old clothes for war relief; W. L. Haynes was installed as president of the chamber of commerce; and Gypsy Orchestra performed at the college auditorium. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Josh Eldredge, Matt Ward, A. J. Sawatzky, Carson Brian and Mark Tannehill were recognized for selling more than $1,000 in popcorn for the Last Frontier Council and Pack 355; Weatherford Board of Education members rehired Pat Morrison as director of special programs; and George Howard won a go-cart given away by O’Reilly’s Auto Parts with the store’s grand opening. Sunday January 11, 1998 DURING THIS WEEK in 1938, the Weatherford high school vocal groups presented the operetta, "Bells of Capistrano; Melva Carol Bratcher was awarded a cash premium by Dr. N. E. Ruhl and the Nichols drug company for being the first 1938 baby; and R. B. Horton was chosen as the new Water Commissioner. DURING THIS WEEK in 1940, a mad-dog scare swept Weatherford after the state health department reported that a dog which had attacked several local residents showed definite symptoms of rabies; R.M. Randle was appointed the adult training supervisor for WOA; and a fire destroyed a new church building in Cordell just 2 hours before dedication. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, winners in the National Geographic sponsored National Geography Bee are West Elementary students were Walter Esjornsen, Patrick Redder and Sam Villines; Whitney Miller hit five three-pointers to help the Lady Eagles to a 58-32 victory over Clinton; and Shane Harris and Daria Powers announced thier engagement and impending marriage. Sunday January 31, 1999 DURING THIS WEEK in 1946, Harry M. Burce was second alternate candidate for West Point; Harvey Richert was employed by the chamber of commerce; and county delegation groups toured irrigation projects. DURING THIS WEEK in 1954, the Rev. William A. Lutker was named the new Baptist minister; and the Boy Scouts had a scrap-paper collection. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Traci Thiessen was named the winner of the 1998 Hugh O’Brian Youth award; Chad Roberts was the WHS wrestler of the Week; West Elementary had their Pancake Supper. Tuesday September 21, 1999 DURING THIS WEEK in 1951, Jake Wright of Weatherford was elected vice president of U.S. 66 Association of Oklahoma; the Eagle pep squad sold balloons to raise funds to entertain the football squad at a banquet; and men’s Buckhide overalls sold for $2.79 a pair at Anthony’s. DURING THIS WEEK IN 1959, heavy one day rain total of 5.13 inches caused 50 rural bridges and culverts to wash out and Highway 66 was blocked for eight hours by flood waters; and Father J.P. Page, pastor of St. James Church, announced plans to build a new catholic church memorial to the late Bishop Eugene J. McGuinness. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Kyle and Amy Albert celebrated an anniversary; Corn Bible Academy opened a new athletic complex; and Serena Helene Loewenkamp and Casey Alan Moore announced the events of their May 16th wedding. Sunday September 19, 1999 DURING THIS WEEK in 1949, Eugene Howe, president of Custer County Federal Savings and Loan, was nominated for a place on the board of directors of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka, Kan.; the couples class of First Baptist Church, taught by Grant Hendrix, met in the city park for a wiener roast; and Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Cox announced the birth of their son, Jerry Lynn. DURING THIS WEEK IN 1957, Police Chief George Miller announced that Greyhound buses would no longer be allowed to load or unload on Main Street but instead would move to North Broadway St.; Rita Estes Duncan was crowned Southwestern’s homecoming queen; and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Moore announced the birth of their daughter, Mitsi Lyn. Tuesday October 5, 1999 DURING THIS WEEK in 1951, the junior high football game with Cordell was called off because the Cordell schools had been out for the cotton harvest; college band director E.E. Mason announced that 14 bands would perform in the homecoming parade; and Mr. and Mrs. John Arney announced the birth of their son, Brian Kevin. DURING THIS WEEK IN 1959, Carroll Young established a tax service with an office at 115 S. Broadway; Pamela Steiner was crowned the junior high football queen by Pat Hodges; and Zane Bergen, science instructor at Weatherford High School, spoke to the Rotary Club about civil defense in the event of an atomic attack. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, SWOSU President Joe Anna Hibler was a finalist for the 17th Annual Journal Record Woman of the Year Award; Hall Technology held their ribbon cutting at 115 E. Main; and Bill Bendure, president of Bendure and Associates, returned from Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he was a trainer at the National Conference of Home Care Magazine. Sunday October 3, 1999 DURING THIS WEEK in 1949, somehow the street numbers in some residential sections got mixed up when they were assigned, so Mayor Ed Berrong suggested that anyone not sure of his present address to check with the city clerk; and U.S. Congressman Victor Wickersham addressed the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Clinton. DURING THIS WEEK IN 1957, an all-school variety program was held to raise money to pay for the new curtains in the high school auditorium; Dr. Nicholas Nyaradi, former minister of finance of Hungary, addressed the CCW Knife and Fork Club; and a pound of bananas sold for 12 cents. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, Dewayne Haas of Weatherford was the top youth walker in the Oklahoma Chapter for WalkAmerica 1998; Floyd Foster was recognized as the Employee of the Third Quarter at the Cornell Corrections, Inc./Great Plains Correctional Facility’s General Staff Meeting; and the Southern Gospel quartet, Mizpah, performed at the Weatherford Gospel Jubilee at the Pioneer Center. Sunday October 10, 1999 DURING THIS WEEK in 1949, Mr. And Mrs. Steele Hutto bought Smith Dry Goods located at 206 W. Main Street; music for the homecoming dance held in the armory was furnished by Eddie Ward’s orchestra of Oklahoma City; and at the junior high Future Homemaker’s of America meeting held in the home economics cottage, Yvonne Conder performed a vocal solo. DURING THIS WEEK IN 1957, the Rev. W.D. Welburn, pastor of the Federated Church, was named president of Friends Inc. for Oklahoma; Gale Witcher was named the 1957 Weatherford Golf Club champion; and Tany Talbot was elected pharmacy queen at Southwestern State College. DURING THIS WEEK LAST YEAR, the Weatherford Fire Department fire clowns entertained local elementary and preschool students when they visited Burcham Elementary for Fire Prevention Week; a monument honoring aborted babies was dedicated at St. Eugene’s Catholic Church - the granite monument was donated by the Matthews family in memory of the late Barbara Matthews, Ph.D., a pro-life advocate who was an active member of St. Eugene’s. |
