Haywood Griffis was born to Robertha (nee Phillips) and Houston Griffis on April 11, 1926 in Wewoka, Okla.
He was the oldest of three boys born to the couple.
An athletically gifted child, Haywood excelled in sports, particularly baseball.
He attended Douglas High School where he formed and maintained many lifelong relationships.
Instilled with a dry sense of humor and a quiet strength, Haywood was a hard worker who took great pride in his effort.
His exceptional work ethic was evident for over 34 years, working as a mechanic for the Ford Motor Company at both Seminole Motors and Jim Baxter Motors.
Long after most of us would have considered retirement, he opened his own car repair business where he expertly continued to serve his customers.
Haywood joined Saint Joseph Baptist Church in Wewoka, Okla. on April 19, 1953 where he was a dutiful member until his death. It was a rare Sunday morning that you could attend service at Saint Joseph and not see Haywood uplifting the Lord.
In addition to being a Sunday School Teacher, he was ordained as a deacon on Oct. 2, 1955 and served faithfully for 58 years.
Haywood is preceded in death by his parents; his two brothers, Freddie and Billy Joe; his first spouse; and two daughters.
To treasure his memory he leaves his loving wife of 55 years, Nargie Griffis; his daughters, Roshawn Thomas (Delbert), Gilda Kesee (Alvin), Frances Boone (Howard) and Jearline Williams (Eddie); eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a multitude of other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday May 20, 2014 at the Wewoka First Baptist Church and burial to follow at Westwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.
Lena Groover
Lena Mae (Sikes) Groover, 79, a resident of Konawa, Okla., died Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Seminole Care and Rehab Center in Seminole.
Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Vamoosa Cemetery. Jimmy Branscum will officiate under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa.
The family will greet visitors at the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m.; then, form a processional to the cemetery at 1:30.
She was born Aug. 7, 1934 in Prague, Okla. to Harvey Sikes and Lola D. (Watkins) Sikes.
She was the manager for Hilltop Café and for the Steakhouse Restaurant in Konawa.
She is survived by two sons, Kerman Raines of Ft. Worth, Tex., and Nelvin Hudson of Seminole; two daughters, Ann Havens of Waco, Tex. and Jawanna Moore of Konawa; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Lola Sikes; her husband, Jerry Groover; two sons, Frankie and Mike Raines; one grandson, Jacob Raines; three sisters, Geneva Dean, Eva Crosby, and Marie Thomas; and two brothers, Alton Sikes and Glen Sikes.
Judy Grotts
Judy Annette (Hiser) Grotts, 57, resident of Konawa, Okla., died Friday, July 11, 2014 at Jan Frances Care Center in Ada, Okla.
A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
Cremation is under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Konawa.
She was born May 14, 1957 in Purcell, Okla. to William Jack Hiser and Virginia Mildred (Freeman) Hiser.
She is survived by her father, Jack Hiser of Konawa; two sons, Donavon Grotts of Wichita, Kans. and Elliot Grotts of Ada, Okla.; one sister, Susan Hays of Konawa; and ten grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Hiser.
Randy Groves
Former Seminole resident Randall Boyd Groves was born in Garden Grove, Calif. on April 5, 1964 and passed away on Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.
Randy graduated from Seminole High School in 1982.
He served in the Oklahoma National Guard and worked for the Seminole Producer as a reporter before moving on to the Daily Oklahoman and other newspapers.
He later was employed by Congressman Gary Condit and relocated to the Washington D.C. area. At the time of his death he was employed with a historical society.
His parents were First Sergeant Donald E. Groves and Kaye Holson Groves, now Luettgens.
He was preceded in death by his father Donald E. Groves and one brother Donald E. Groves.
He leaves to cherish his memory: mother Kaye Luettgens; brothers Kevin Groves (Joyce), Gunner Luettgens and Douglas Groves.
Interment was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mark Gurley
Mark Allen Gurley, 54, former Seminole area resident, now of Ponca City, Okla. died Sunday May 4, 2014 at his home.
He was born Nov. 5, 1959 in Seminole, Okla. to Roy Evertt and Margaret LaDawn (Langston) Gurley.
He was a former roughneck in the area oilfields and lived in Seminole County most of his life.
He is survived by three brothers, Bill Gurley, David Gurley and Mike Gurley all of Ponca City, Okla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet; and his parents.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday May 7, 2014 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Little Cemetery.
Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.
Edward Hailey
Edward Lee Hailey, 80, went to be with the Lord at 3 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, 2014 as a result of a brain tumor. He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends.
He was born March 10, 1933 in Sasakwa, Okla. to Henry Edward Hailey and Helen M. Gaines.
Ed married Johnnie Snell in 1952 in Seminole, Okla. They were married for 62 years.
Ed was a member of Assembly of God and was an active sponsor of Saint Jude Children Home.
He enjoyed working, bowling, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
He was a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, and the National Rifle Association.
He spend his professional career working in the oilfield, he began his career with Midland Supply Company of Seminole for ten years as a field technician; he was an independent consultant for an International Supply Company for two years; after which he opened Hydrostatic Engineers in January 1965.
After a brief period of retirement he re-entered the professional arena to work as a consultant for Testers Inc.
He was an innovator in hydrostatic pressure testing; setting the standards now recognized by the industry. His efforts and ingenuity have greatly benefited the oilfield operations.
Ed is preceded in death by his parents, Henry Hailey and Helen Hailey Roulston and his brothers, Charles D. Hailey and Joe Roulston Jr.
Ed is survived by his wife, Johnnie of the home; two daughters, Patty Hallmark of Moore, Okla., and Judy Hailey of Tex.; two grandchildren, Melissa Crabtree and Todd Hallmark of Oklahoma City, Okla. one great granddaughter, Savannah H. Hallmark of Oklahoma City, Okla.; two brothers, Herbert E. Hailey of Del City, Okla. and Jay Roulston; one sister, Loretta Cole of Asher, Okla. and his many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and numerous friends and colleagues.
Services to celebrate his life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 at New Life Assembly, 1421 SE 59th Street, Oklahoma City, Okla. Burial will follow in Seminole at Maple Grove Cemetery.
The family will be greeting friends and relatives from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014 at John Ireland Funeral Home, 120 S. Broadway, Moore, Okla.
Johncy Hair
Former resident Johncy Dean Hair died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 in Pauls Valley, Okla.
She was born Nov. 19, 1929 at Atwood, Okla. to Carl Cotton and Annie Howell Cotton.
She was a graduate of Atwood High School in 1947.
She married Jack Murrell Hair Aug. 11, 1947.
She worked for First National Bank and Seminole County.
She loved cooking, watching Thunder Basketball, OU Football, and taking care of her grandchildren.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; brothers, Lake Leon Cotton, Gerald Wayne Cotton, Johnny Cotton and sister Eva Jean Smith.
Survivors include son Jon Hair of Pauls Valley, Okla.; sister Joan Whitehead, of Allen, Okla.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Honorary Pall Bearers will be Josh Hair, Allen McCrary, Darryl Keiser, Chuck Smith, Shawn Taylor, Ricky Hair, Paul Smith JR. Donny Hair, Danny Hair, and Dedric Johnson.
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014 at Oakwood Cemetery with Pastor Carl Whitfield officiating.

Juanita Hair
Juanita Jewel (Grissom) Hair, 71 year old Seminole resident passed from this life on Friday, October 24, 2014 in Wewoka, Okla.
She was born February 20, 1943 in Tuscumbia, Ala. to parents, Pearl (Hale) Grissom and Joe Grissom.
Juanita was a lifelong Seminole County resident who worked for Wewoka Public School Cafeteria for several years in the 1980’s and 1990’s.
She later worked as a nurse’s aid for ONHL care center in Wewoka until her retirement.
Juanita married Richard Hair on June 17, 1960 in Wewoka, Okla.
He preceded her in death in 2006.
Survivors include one son, Richard "Ricky" Hair, Jr. of Wewoka, Okla., two daughters, Jennifer Conn of Seminole, Okla. and Trina Dutton of Checotah, Okla.
She is also survived by one brother, Bob Grissom of Branson, Mo., eight grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and a host of other family and dear friends including her special companion, Kenneth Smith of Seminole, Okla.
Juanita is preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Richard Hair, by her mother, Pearl (Hale) Grissom, by her father, Joe Grissom. S
he is also preceded in death by six brothers, Walter, Pete, Bill, David, Howell and Powell Grissom and by two sisters, Peggy LaFever and Jean Grissom and by one great grandson, Kaden Johnson.
Memorial services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014 at Blessed Rock Church in Wewoka, Okla. with Sam Ketcher officiating the service.
