Joyce Harber

Joyce Frances (Allen) Harber of Tulsa, Okla. passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at her home in Tulsa. At the time of her death she was 74 years old.

Born Sept. 3, 1939 in Seminole, Okla., Joyce was one of four children of parents, Joseph "Joe" E. Allen and Norine (Jones) Allen.

She graduated from Seminole High School. She was also a graduate of Draughon's Business School.

She worked as an Executive Assistant and Office Manager during her career.

She was a Christian.

Joyce was married to and divorced from Charles C. Harber who preceded her in death on May 31, 2012.

In addition to her parents Joyce was preceded in death by brother, Clyde Edward Allen.

She is survived by her son, Eric Harber and wife, Alyson of Seattle; son, Daren Harber of Dallas; brothers, Carmon "Lee" Allen and wife, Gloria of Oklahoma City; Arnold Ray Allen and wife, Nancy of Ada; three grandchildren, Ryan Harber, Serena Harber, Joanna "Jojo" Harber.

She will be buried in West Lawn Cemetery in Henryetta. There will be a graveside service Monday, Aug. 4 at 12:00 noon.

J.D. Hardin

Services for J. D. "Jake" Hardin, 85, of Ada, are 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Reaper Baptist Church, Rev. Clyde Cochran will officiate.

Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Stonewall.

Mr. Hardin died Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at a local nursing home.

He was born May 10, 1929 at Lima, Okla. to Ola and Hattie Hill Hardin.

He married L. V. Wright. She preceded him in death on February 10, 1994.

Mr. Hardin had been employed at May’s Lumber and retired from the service department at Service Chevrolet in Ada.

He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his children, Vernita Richardson of Ada, Gregg Hardin of Bristow, and Earnest Wright, Stanley Richardson and Evelyn Cushenberry, all of Ada; 10 grandchildren, Shyilah Hardin, Maliyah Hardin, Theron Richardson whom he helped raise, Terrance Richardson, Colton Richardson, Natasha Nowlin, Elvia Mitchell whom he helped raise, Donnell McDowell, Jasmine Daniels and Chaz Daniels; numerous great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; a niece he helped rear, Oletha Futrel and his cousins that he helped raise include Brenda, Sharon, Bruce, Wendell, and Pat, a niece, Dorothy, a great niece, Felicia; and a brother-in-law, Willie Lee Brown.

J. D. was known for his love and passion for Gospel music in which he has been in Gospel singing groups playing his guitar all his life.

J. D. also loved basketball. He coached hundreds of players at New Lima and in Ada.

His passion spilled over on his son, Gregg Hardin who played ball in Okla. and Mo. and now is the head coach at Bristow High School.

J. D. will be remembered for all these things but none more important than being a great father/mentor and a man of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, L. V. Hardin; three sisters, Clarena Shelton, Huella Brown and Buelena Johnson; and two brothers, Buford Hardin and Emory Hardin.

Melvin Hargis

Melvin Eugene Hargis, 81, lifelong Seminole resident died, Saturday, March 15, 2014 at his home in Seminole.

Melvin was born on July 2, 1932 in Seminole, Okla. to Mamie Louise (Close) Hargis and Clarence Otis Hargis.

Melvin grew up in Seminole, attended Seminole Public Schools and graduated from Seminole High School in the class of 1952.

Melvin served his country in the U. S. Army and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Tecumseh, Okla. and was formerly a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Seminole, in which he helped build the church in his younger years.

Melvin was a carpenter, a well-known cabinetmaker, and worked with his father, Clarence Hargis, in the Hargis Cabinet Shop on Strother Street, in Seminole for many years.

Melvin retired in 1992.

Melvin was a loving and devoted father and grandfather.

Melvin loved tool collecting and was a member of the Midwest and Southwest Tool Collectors Association.

Melvin married Nancy Etta (Littlejohn) Hargis on Dec. 20, 1957 in Seminole. Mrs. Hargis preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 1993.

Melvin is survived by his son, David Hargis of Seminole; his two daughters, Jeanette Tiger of Seminole and Martha Howard and her husband Kirk of Allen, Tex.; his brother, Charles Leslie Hargis, of Georgia; two sisters, Virginia Abbott of New Braunsfel, Tex. and Nettie Zella Van Alstine of Kentucky.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kursten Maye of Seminole, Nancy Ellen Maye of Seminole, Leah Nicole Howard and Adam McCarran Howard of Allen, Tex.

Melvin is also survived by Kent Maye, the father of his grandchildren; his sister-in-law Elizabeth Gunter of Seminole; his special caregiver, Sarah Clark; and special friends, Thomas Jackson and Lee Ann Sysk.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, John C. Hargis; and a sister, Mamie Louise Norris.

Funeral services are planned for 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Rev. Phyllis Stutzman officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens, east of Seminole.

Casket bearers will be Robert Leatherman, Thomas Jackson, Chuck Moose, Kirk Howard, J.P. " Doc" Duval and William Clinkenbeard.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Rudolph Hargrave

Rudolph Hargrave was born on Feb. 15, 1925 in Shawnee, Okla. to John Hubert Hargrave and Daisy (Holmes) Hargrave.

Rudolph passed away on April 1, 2014 in Ada, Okla.

After his retirement in 2010, Rudolph began his life of relaxation by traveling with Madeline, visiting the children and grandchildren, and continued his love of singing in the church choir.

He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

Rudolph will always be remembered for his sweet smile, wonderful sense of humor and his devotion to his family and community.

Rudolph attended schools in Wewoka, Okla. He continued to make his home in Wewoka with the love of his life for over 60 years, Madeline (Shipley) Hargrave, where they also chose to raise their three children, Cindy, John, and Jana.

Rudolph attended the University of Oklahoma where he received his law degree in 1949.

He began his private practice of law in Wewoka until 1964.

Afterward he became the County Judge for Seminole County, Okla. from 1964 to 1967.

From 1967-1969, Rudolph was Seminole County Superior Court Judge and was Seminole County District Judge from 1969-1978.

He was named Distinguished Alumnus from East Central University in 1989.

In 1978, he was appointed to the Oklahoma Supreme Court by Governor David L. Boren.

Justice Hargrave was elected Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the State of Oklahoma on Jan. 1, 1989.

While serving as Chief Justice he was elected by the National Conference of Chief Justices as Vice-President of the conference, the only Oklahoma Supreme Court Justice to ever serve in that position.

He is also a member of the Seminole County Bar Association, Oklahoma Bar Association, American Bar Association and the Oklahoma Judicial Conference.

He continued his service to Oklahoma on the Supreme Court until his retirement in 2010.

Justice Hargrave was honored by the namesake "Hargrave Prize" award, first given in 2013 as an annual recognition of the best three faculty papers of the Sovereignty Symposium.

Ruldolph was a 32nd degree Mason and member of the United Methodist Men’s group.

Rudolph is preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Mickey Herron.

Survivors include his wife, Madeline of the home; children, Cindy Keefer and husband Paul of Ada, John Hargrave and wife Kay of Ada, and Jana Howard and husband Mike of Ardmore; grandchildren, Jeff Hargrave, Robert Hargrave, Lora Alexander, Melissa Raymond, Kirby Bolitho, Evan Keefer, Kaycee Rider, Robin Freer, and Clayton Howard; ten great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Friday, April 4, 2014 at the Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka. Rev. Susan Rice will officiate.

Honorary casket bearers will be Michael Howard, Paul Keefer, Jeff Hargrave, Robert Hargrave, Evan Keefer, and Clayton Howard.

In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Seminole Nation Museum, First United Methodist Church of Wewoka, or the East Central University Foundation.

Services are under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home in Wewoka.

Edmond Harjo

Edmond Andrew Harjo, 96, Maud resident died, Monday March 31, 2014 in Ada, Okla. at Mercy Hospital.

Edmond was born on Nov. 24, 1917 in Maud, Okla. to Yanna (Grant) and Tony Harjo.

Mr. Harjo had lived in the Maud and Seminole areas all his life.

He was a longtime member of the Achena Presbyterian Church in Maud, where he was a church elder and officer.

He was a schoolteacher most of his life and taught at Maud Schools, Justice Schools and Pickett Center.

Mr. Harjo was also a concert pianist.

Mr. Harjo served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II; he was a private first class and a Seminole Nation Code Talker, during the war, for which he received a Good Conduct Medal, EAME service Ribbon with one Silver Service Star, his unit was Battery "A" 195th Field Artillery Battalion.

His nephew, Richard Harjo of Maud and several other nieces and nephews survive him.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m., Friday, April 4, 2014 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Rev. Dr. Eugene Wilson officiating and elders Frank Sewell, Lewis Fife and Rick Harjo assisting with the service. Burial will follow at Seminole Nation Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Seminole.

There will be a wake service on Thursday, April 3, 2014 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole.

Casket bearers will be Frank Sewell, Charles Sewell, Eric Thocco, Kendall Roberts, Gary Roybal, Ferrall Smith and Shawn Harjo.

Honorary bearers will be Ed Jojola, Ben Sewell, Chuck Sewell, Aaron Coker, Allen Aldridge, Joe Bruner, Marion Jones and Kelly Tiger, Jr.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.
