Owen Lytle

Mr. Owen Shelby Lytle was born Aug. 28, 1920 in Bixby, Okla. to parents Harvey Allen and Orpha Mae (Van Osdal) Lytle.

He attended school in St. Louis, Okla. and Ray City, Okla.

He passed on to be with his Heavenly Father on May 3, 2014 at his home in Maud, Okla.; he was 93.

Mr. Lytle was an exceptional man, true to his word, kind to all, always loving and supportive of his family and friends.

He loved this country and volunteered for service to the U.S. Army on Jan. 9, 1942; serving her well during World War II as a staff sergeant in Normandy, Rhineland, Northern France Central Europe and Germany.

He felt honored to have received the Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Medal, an EAME Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and a Silver Service Star.

Owen worked 20 years for Halliburton as a Division Welder and later for the Santa Fe Railroad from 1972 to 1985 as a Track Inspector.

During these years he served his church as a choir director, a teacher, and as a member of the Financial Board in the Church of God in Abilene, Tex.

Moving back to this area, he lived many years in Maud with his wife, Jean (Armstrong) Lytle.

They married on Feb. 15, 1947 in Shawnee, Okla. and recently celebrated their 67th anniversary.

He raised two fine sons and was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

He was known as Pepa, the best Pepa ever and as Uncle Owen.

Owen’s service to others, his family, his friends, and even strangers gave his family much pride in the individual he was.

Always helping others in his love for his fellow man; one such incident was the Dripping Springs Cemetery.

As a forgotten and un-kept place with no name to mark the cemetery, no flag pole, and many unmarked graves, it saddened Owen to see something so meaningful in preserving our heritage being forgotten.

So he alone began to restore this much forgotten place.

Others joined and soon things in Dripping Springs Cemetery were set right because of one man’s special gifts of service and love.

Owen is survived by his wife, Jean, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny Lytle and his wife Janell of La Port, Tex., Gary Lytle and his wife Karen of Healdton, Okla.; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Charlie Lytle and his wife Sue of Midland, Tex., Dewey Lytle and his wife Sharon of Beaumont, Tex. and Vernon Lytle of Tulsa, Okla.; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Naomi (Lytle) Jones; and five brothers, Eldon Lytle, David Lytle, Roland Lytle, Lewis Lytle and Gerald Lytle.

The family will receive family and friends at a special visitation, Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 8, 2014 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Shawnee. Sid Freeman and William L. Sims will officiate at the services.

Wanda Machalek

Wanda Jean (Heffley) Machalek, 79, longtime Seminole resident died, Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Wanda was born July 3, 1935 in Seminole, Okla. to Laura (Loudermilk) and Daniel Matthew Heffley.

Wanda grew up in Seminole and attended Seminole Public Schools.

Most of her life was spent living in Seminole, however she lived in Temple, Tex. for 20 years.

Wanda was a longtime Wal-Mart employee and was retired from Wal-Mart at the time of her death.

Wanda loved sewing, knitting, watching sewing shows on Saturday morning, playing bingo and spending time with her family.

Wanda leaves to cherish her memories her brothers, Joe Heffley and his wife Dale of Seminole, Okla., Ronnie Heffley and his wife Jean of Midwest City, Okla., Kenneth Heffley and his wife Debbie of Kentucky, and Jim Heffley and his wife Judy of Eufaula, Okla.; sisters, Louise Moore and her husband Archie of Broken Bow, Okla. and Bertha Pokrefkey of Seminole, Okla. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husbands, Bob Heard who died in 1981 and Bill Machalek who died in 2004.

Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m., Monday, Sept. 15, 2014 at Little Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Billy Marquis

Billy G. Marquis, 86, longtime Seminole resident died, Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 at Avonela Cottage in Seminole, Okla.

Billy was born April 5, 1927 in Seminole, to Eunice (Bramlett) Marquis and Jess Marquis.

Billy grew up in Seminole, attended and graduated from Strother High School and entered the U. S. Navy during the end of his senior year.

Billy served in U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. Arkansas during World War II as a Seaman 2nd Class. His ship was stationed in the Marshall Islands during the testing of the Atomic Bomb.

Billy worked for Montgomery Wards for over 25 years in Dallas, Tex. and retired as Department manager for plumbing and roofing materials.

During his younger years, he worked for the Mercury Oil Refinery in Seminole.

Billy was a longtime member of the Church of Christ in Seminole, a member of the Masonic lodge and was an avid coon hunter.

Billy married Margaret Joan "Jo" Nelon on April 23, 1948 in Seminole and sadly Jo preceded him in death on Aug. 29, 2013.

Billy is survived by his three daughters, Brenda Lozano of Lindale, Tex., Linda Silvey of Mineola, Tex. and Cindy Chambers of Midland, Tex.; two sisters, Reba Duncan of Norman, Okla. and Claudette Brock of Tulsa, Okla.; one brother, Bobby Jo Marquis of Cromwell, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Mark Hennen officiating. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery. U.S. Naval Honors will be presented at the Funeral Home Chapel.

The family will receive family and friends at a visitation on Tuesday evening, Feb. 18, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Casket bearers will be Michael Lozano, Alan McCracken, Luke Chambers, Tucker Phelps, Jeff Duncan, Terry Silvey, Bobby Marquis and Anthony Campus.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Chris Marshall

Chris Marshall, 67, of Pawhuska, Okla., passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2014 in Tulsa, Okla.

He was born Aug. 20, 1947 to Cleveland Thurman and Isabel Helen (Gap) Marshall in Concho, Okla.

Chris was raised in a military family and lived in many places during his childhood including Shawnee and Maud, where he attended Maud High School.

He later lived in Seminole for many years.

During his work career, he worked as a journeyman bricklayer, at Bodkins Furniture Store and at Combs Heat & Air.

He was an all-around good handyman.

Chris loved sports and was a proud OU fan, liked watching the OKC Thunder, was a good pool and domino player and always looked after his elders.

He was preceded in death by his father Cleveland Marshall; and sister, Regina Combs.

Chris is survived by his wife, Daisy Mae Marshall of Tulsa, Okla.; four children Rebecca Horsechief of Pawnee, Okla., Chrisandra Marshall of Broken Arrow, Okla., Jesse "Coesse" Marshall of Moberly, Mo., Katie Marshall of Tulsa, Okla; four grandchildren: Natasha, Emanuel, and Anthony Ahaisse, Tristan Marshall, and Quinton Davis; Six great-grandchildren: Brianna Durant, Yulianna Ahaisse, Trey Roderrick Ragsdale III, Bradley Ahaisse and Jayceon Ragsdale; mother Isabel H. Gyongyossy of Wichita, Kans.; sister, Diana Buchanan of Escondido, Cali.; special niece, Valerie Combs of Seminole, Okla.; special nephew, Rick Combs of Seminole, Okla.; numerous other nieces and nephews, and other extended family.

Wake service will be 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2014 at Horseshoe Bend.

Service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday Nov. 20, 2014 at Horseshoe Bend with Houston Tiger officiating.

Burial will follow at Coker Family Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.

Joyce Martin

Joyce Martin, 83, died Friday, March 7, 2014 in Midwest City, Okla.

She was born on March 13, 1930 in Arcadia, Okla. to Charlie and Mildred (Holcomb) Burrow.

She attended school in Arcadia.

She married Marvin Ed Martin in 1947 in Arcadia, Okla.

Preceding her death are her husband; parents; siblings Melvin Burrow, Fritz Burrow and Elizabeth Kuminsky.

Survivors include her daughter, Lora Cellars of Wellston, three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother Max Burrow of Tyron.

A funeral service has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Cromwell. Rev. Manuel Kishketon, Sr. will officiate.

Pallbearers will be John Want, Mark Cellars, Steven Cellars, Brian Cellars, Rick Martin, and Clark Campbell.

Honorary bearer will be Tom Moss.

Interment will follow at the Holdenville Cemetery in Holdenville.

Services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home in Holdenville.

Myrtle Martin

Myrtle Hope Marie (Becks) Martin, 95, longtime Seminole resident died Thursday, June 26, 2014 at her home in Seminole.

Myrtle was born Dec. 17, 1918 in Picher, Okla. to Mary Nancy (Stamper) and William Earl Becks.

Myrtle moved to the Seminole area at an early age from Quapaw, Okla.

Myrtle was a former member of the Ladies Home Demonstration Group-Butner School in the 1950’s.

She loved cooking, sewing, and gardening.

Myrtle was a member of the Church of Christ in Seminole.

She was an Audio-Visural Aid /Title 1 at Roosevelt School in Seminole and retired in 1978.

Myrtle is survived by two sons, Don Martin of Seminole, Okla. and Wade Martin of Wichita, Kans.; her grandchildren, Mary Elizibeth Richter, Martin David Kyle, Rosie Youngblood, Michelle K. Toilolo and Paula Eileen Eka; eleven great grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Paul Martin, on Aug. 13, 1970.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at the Church of Christ on Hwy 99N, in Seminole, Okla. with Chris Stinnett officiating, assisted by Palmer Smith. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Kal Toilolo, Tony Eka, James Lee Martin-Toilolo, Winford Lemons, Steve Johnson, David Kyle and Kenny Brewer.

Honorary bearers will be Cecil Sullivan, Syd Morgan, Arpoika Daniels, Dan Reynolds, Ryan Christ, Steve Lashley, Jack Cadenhead, Bill McDonald and Clint Jackson.

The family would like to say a special thank you to her church family at the Church of Christ in Seminole, Medical personnel of Seminole Integris Hospital, Midwest City Regional Hospital, Colonial Estates Nursing Home, Shawnee, Okla., St. Anthony’s Hospital in Shawnee, Okla., Seminole Family Medical Clinic, Butner High School Alumni Association and Loving Care Home Health and Hospice Care.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.
