Isla Mae Phillips, 91, longtime Seminole resident, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2014 in Seminole, Okla.
She was born on March 9, 1923 in Caddo County, Oklahoma to Flora (Hughes) and B.J. Hennington, Sr.
The family moved to Seminole when Isla Mae was ten years old.
Isla Mae grew up in the Seminole area and attended and graduated from Varnum High School.
Over the years she also took classes and attended Seminole State College and Oklahoma Baptist University.
She married Noah Jefferson Phillips on Aug. 22, 1941 in Ada, Okla. and when he passed away in 2013, they had been married for 72 years.
Isla Mae primarily was a homemaker, taking very good care of her family, but also was the family accountant for the family businesses.
She is remembered as an excellent cook, her dinner rolls and desserts, a faithful wife, mother, loving grandmother, and the best mother-in-law one could ask for.
She also loved her dogs, and had a love for all animals, including feeding raccoon’s and neighborhood cats and dogs.
She attended the First Presbyterian Church for many years and was the church organist there. She also played the organ to help other churches in Seminole and Wewoka, including the First Methodist Church in Seminole, where she later attended.
She was a member of the American Guild of Organists’ for over 40 years.
Isla Mae was a member of "Selectones Singing Group" and traveled around the state where they performed at different functions.
She was also an accomplished artist as seen in her many paintings.
Isla Mae was also a longtime member of P.E.O. in Seminole.
Philllips is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Noah Jefferson (Jay) Phillips III and his wife Laurie Phillips of Seminole; one brother, B.J. Hennington, Jr. of Birmingham, Ala.
She is also survived by her eight grandchildren, Connie (Phillips) King and her husband Donny King, Kerry Causey and his wife Lynn Causey, Kevin Causey, Debbie Causey and Deanna (Causey) Morrison and her husband Jerry Morrison; twelve great grandchildren, Austin King, Darah King, Matthew Causey and his wife Nicole Causey, Mackenzie (Causey) Barrett and her husband Micha Barrett, Cody Causey, Jordan Kerr, Jay Randal (Boomer) Pierce, Caden Pierce, Josh Causey, Nick Causey, Jerry Ray Morrison, Ryan Morrison and Garrett Stuteville; great- great grandchildren, Treyson Kerr and Malacli Barrett and Lyla Morrison; nephews and nieces, Pat Molloy of Seminole, Okla., Terry Don Phillips, Casey Phillips of Seminole and Linda Crumbliss, B. J. Hennington, III; great nephew, B.J. Hennington IV, and by very special friends, Shannon Duchanne; her caregiver, Tonya Rollin, Melvin and Jasmine Moran, all of Seminole.
Isla Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband N.J. Phillips, Jr.; and one grandson, Jay Carl Phillips.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2014, at the Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Okla. with Rev. Sanford Griggs. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole.
Casket bearers will be Kerry Causey, Donny King, Austin King, Jerry Morrison, Boomer Pierce, Josh Causey, Nick Causey, Ryan Morrison and Cody Causey.
Honorary bearers will be Melvin Moran, Cecil Sullivan, B.J. Hennington, Jr. and Pat Malloy.
The family will have a reception at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Phillips, after the funeral and burial services, located on North/South 3600, approximately 4 miles north of the Old Breedlove’s Store, off Highway # 9.
Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.
Marshall Phillips
Funeral services for Marshall Phillips will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Carl Whitfield officiating.
Serving as casket bearers will be Matt Myrick, Brandon Scott, Henry Wells, Jr., Kevin Anderson, Wesley Phillips and Keith Phillips.
Burial will follow at Little Cemetery.
Mr. Phillips passed away Saturday, October 11, 2014 at Solara Hospital in Shawnee at the age of 83.
He was born April 9, 1931 in Seminole, Okla. to John Calvin and Emma Lee (Redding) Phillips.
He married Norma Jean (Melton) on January 19, 1952 in Seminole, Okla.
Marshall was a truck driver and worked in the greater area oil fields for most of his life.
He was a handyman, collector of "merchandise" and could fix almost anything.
He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Norma Jean of the home; one son, Ronald Phillips and his wife Cindy of Seminole; one daughter, Karen Scott and husband Roy of Laurel, Md.; one brother, Robert Phillips and his wife Elva of Seminole; one sister, Loretta Smith of Seminole; grandchildren, Shanna and Henry Wells, Ashlee Allen, Brenna and Kevin Anderson, Corey Scott, Wesley and Destiny Phillips, Hollee and Matt Myrick and Brandon Scott; great grandchildren, Alex, Lance, Quentin, Kolby, Jaxson, Angel, Emalee, Kaydee, Bryce, Lillian and Austin and a host of other family and friends.
Marshall was preceded in death by his parents, John and Emma Phillips; one daughter, Kathy Ryan; three brothers, Clifton, Wayne and Jackie Phillips; two sisters, Betty Belshe and Lena Estep and an infant brother.
Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home.
Nancy Phillips
Nancy Lee (Chaney) Phillips died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, in Norman.
She was born Aug. 4, 1937 in Wewoka to Emory Lee and Hazel Marie (Williams) Chaney.
In her early life Nancy worked in her father’s drug store, Chaney Drug. Selling cosmetics, photography equipment and even being the "soda jerk" were her part-time and summer jobs.
In high school she worked at the Wewoka Times.
After graduating Wewoka High School, Nancy went to the then all-girls Lindenwood University before transferring to the University of Oklahoma.
At OU Nancy worked as a reporter on the student newspaper The Oklahoma Daily.
She was very proud when her grandson Cody Phillips became the news editor of the same paper this year.
At OU she met her future husband Ted Phillips on a blind date. They married in 1957 and made their home in Seminole.
Nancy was active in the Democratic Party. She campaigned for Stevenson, Hubert Humphrey and was a delegate at the 1968 Democratic convention in Chicago.
Nancy worked part time in her family’s newspaper, The Seminole Producer, filling in for staff vacations, doing bookkeeping and writing a social column called "Nancy’s Notebook" for many years.
She was also a very active volunteer.
Nancy served seven years on the Oklahoma Foundation for Humanities and one term as its chairperson.
She was the former chair of the Seminole Public Library Trust.
In 1995 she spearheaded a project to publish the book "Memories Shared, " which gathered local stories about the history of Seminole. All of the proceeds went to the Seminole Library Trust.
She also was a member of the Seminole Chamber of Commerce, Oklahoma Press Association, Modern Literature Club of Seminole, Oklahoma Cultural Plan and other various groups.
Nancy enjoyed traveling and visited several countries in Europe when she was in college and on family vacations after she was married.
Besides her family, one of the highlights of her life was her retirement years.
She and Ted moved a houseboat to the head of the Mississippi River and took several months to float back to Oklahoma ending the trip near Sallisaw.
Later they moved the boat to Lake Eufaula where they lived in the summer months, often hosting friends and family for a day at the lake.
Eventually they purchased a condo near Padre Island in Port Aransas, Texas.
Nancy lived there full time after the loss of her husband.
In Port Aransas she volunteered at The University of Texas Marine Science Institute and the local museum. In 2013 she moved into a nursing home in Norman, Okla.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband Theodore Morton "Ted" Phillips on July 18, 2004.
She is survived by her two sons, Ted Steven Phillips and his wife Fran of Reston, Va., and Stu Phillips and his wife Cheryl of Seminole; three grandsons, Cody Phillips of Oklahoma City, Steve and John Phillips of Reston, Va.; three granddaughters, Shirlene Cofer and Katie Feken of Seminole, and Darlene Carbitcher of Norman; and five great-grandchildren.
Private family services are planned with Swearingen Funeral Home.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Seminole Public Library Trust.
Phyllis Phillips
Phyllis Jean (Collinsworth) Phillips, age 62 and a resident of Sasakwa, Okla., passed away from this life on Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at her home.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 17th at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Konawa, Okla.
Ed George will officiate, and burial will follow at Vamoosa Cemetery.
Pallbearers are Mark Payne, Mitchell Payne, Monty Payne, Gary Elliott, Jerrod Collinsworth, and Matt Abel. Honorary Pallbearers are Zack Collinsworth, Erik Todd, and Sonny Collinsworth.
Jean was born on May 26, 1952 in Seminole, Okla. to Jerry Collinsworth and Johnnie (Tollett) Collinsworth.
She graduated from Sasakwa High School and married Terry Phillips May 8, 1976 in Byng, Okla.
She was a homemaker who enjoyed crocheting, baking cookies, making candy, and spending time with her children and grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of thirty-eight years, Terry Phillips of the home; two sons, Jeremy Phillips and wife, Kristy of Sasakwa, and Josh Phillips also of Sasakwa; one brother, Brad Collinsworth and wife, Brenda of Sasakwa; three sisters, Sharlene Phillips and husband, Bobby of Seminole, Linda Payne and husband, Kenneth of Konawa, and Carlotta Travels of Sasakwa; and five grandchildren, Colton Phillips, Jonathan Dominic, Alexis Dominic, Hayden Phillips, and Waylon Phillips.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jerry and Johnnie Collinsworth; one brother, Leon Collinsworth; and one sister, Shirley Collinsworth.
Marion Pippin
She made her way into this world March 14, 1925 as Marion Jenelle Crawford and departed June 7, 2014 as Marion C. Pippin at age 89.
She had been residing at Seminole Care and Rehab for almost a year.
Born in Ranger, Tex. to Homer David (Bob) Crawford and Myrtle Walker Crawford, Marion moved at the age of eight with her family to Seminole, where her father could earn a living for his family of five during the Depression years.
She never wanted to live anywhere else.
As a teen she worked at the 5 and 10 Cent Store and in her early 20's at the Seminole Producer.
Many people will remember her from her 25 years at First Federal Savings and Loan where she retired as a Loan Officer.
Now she is reunited with the love of her life, her husband of 66 years, Ralph A. Pippin, who preceded her in death in 2012.
They were active members of the Seminole Church of Christ for over 50 years.
She is also preceded by her parents; and brothers, Robert Crawford and James Crawford.
Surviving family include a son, Richard David Pippin of St. Robert, Mo.; a daughter, Linda Pippin Griffin Puckett of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; five grandchidren; six great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.
Corrected Memorial Service will be Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole.
