Ruby Sullenger
It is with deep sorrow that we announce that our husband, father, grandfather, and brother, Rudy Sullenger, passed away on Jan. 3, 2014 at the age of 88 from cardiac complications.
Dad (also called Pappa by his grandchildren) was born on Oct. 2, 1925 in Seminole, Okla. to Tom and Agnes Sullenger.
He is survived by five sisters, Bessie, Vera, Verna, Geri, and Ima, and two brothers, Levi and Jimmy.
Dad joined the military at 17 and was deployed to fight in WWII the moment he turned 18.
As a member of the 27th tank battalion in the Army, he was part of the first Allied unit to roll through the gates at Dachau concentration camp.
They faced resistance from SS troops, but ultimately secured the camp and liberated the prisoners.
Although he rarely spoke about his military experiences, they affected and shaped him deeply.
Following the war, Dad moved to California's Salinas Valley, then relocated to Ventura County in 1958.
He worked for CalPine Containers for more than 30 years, and started his own company, GARD Trucking, Inc., in 1970.
He expanded the business to GARD Trucking and Container, Inc., in 1982.
He made many longtime friends in the ranching and produce community, who will remember him for his stellar reputation, old-fashioned values and his willingness to mentor and help launch others in their careers.
Dad was the quintessential southern gentleman in both his personal and professional lives.
He loved to spend his free time puttering in the yard, caring for his flowers, vegetables and chickens.
He was an avid sports fan as both a spectator and a participant and loved to spend "a good day at work" playing golf.
He freely bestowed nicknames on everyone he met; he never called anyone by their real name-and this was true for family, friends, waitresses.
Dad had many favorite sayings (most of them inappropriate for print) but one he used often was, "Take your time leaving but hurry like the dickens coming back."
Dad is survived by his loving wife of nearly 44 years, Arlene; and seven children, Viki (Allen), Valeri (Earl), Rick (Cheryl), Buzz (Patty), Brent (Maria), Tevis (Bobbi), and Lori (John).
Dad was also blessed with 17 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Beverly; his brother, Cecil; and his son, Scott.
