Shirley Brewer

Shirley Ann (Shiflett) Brewer, 76, passed away peacefully after a sudden brief illness on Nov. 7 in Salina, Kans. while traveling home to Arvada.

Shirley was born Aug. 6, 1937 in Wewoka, Okla. to Erbert and Velma Shiflett.

She graduated from Wewoka High School and attended Phillips University in Enid, Okla. She graduated with a degree in business.

She was married to Don Delano Brewer on Dec. 22, 1958.

Shirley was a loving mother and homemaker when her children were young.

Later she worked at H & R Block for more than ten years.

She continued using her love of numbers and helping others by preparing taxes until her passing.

An avid genealogist, Shirley spent hours researching and traveling to learn about her ancestry.

She was a registered member of the Cherokee Nation.

She was a life-long active member of her church, most recently attending the First United Church of Arvada (UCC) while also maintaining her membership at Central Christian Church in Denver.

She and Don loved to travel and especially enjoyed their many visits to Disneyland and Walt Disney World as well as visiting family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her husband of nearly 55 years, Don; and two children, Don Delano Brewer II and Deirdre Diane Brewer, both of Arvada.

She is also survived by one sister, Sharon, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A memorial service in celebration of Shirley’s life will be on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2:00 p.m. at Central Christian Church, 3690 Cherry Creek South Drive, Denver, Colo. 80209.

Shirley and Don shared a passion for caring for others, particularly children.

In lieu of flowers, Shirley requested donations be made to the Tennyson Center for Children, 2950 Tennyson Street, Denver, CO 80212 for the Shirley and Don Brewer Continuing Education Endowment Fund.

Vernie Brooks

Vernie B. (Brown) Brooks, 68, died Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at her home in Earlsboro.

She was born Aug. 13, 1944 in Shawnee, Okla. to Edward Brown and Arnetta (Lee) Brown.

She graduated from Earlsboro High School in 1962 and went on to earn her associates degree from Oklahoma School of Business and Technology.

On Dec. 11, 1975 she married Kenneth "Joe" Brooks in San Diego, Calif.

She worked in the banking industry at Security Pacific Bank and later as the manager of the Bank of America both located in San Diego

She worked for the Earlsboro Public School District until her retirement.

She is survived by her mother, Arnetta Jackson of Earlsboro; her husband, Kenneth "Joe" Brooks of the home; one son, Tommy C. Brown of Choctaw, Okla.; one daughter, Bridgett Brooks of Earlsboro; two sisters, Parthenia Burdine of Edmond, Okla., Deneisa Jackson of Edmond, Okla.; and one granddaughter.

She is preceded in death by her father, Edward Brown.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 25, 2013 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Rev. Grayson officiating. Interment will follow at Earlsboro Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Zelford M. Smith, Lee W. Hodges Sr., Lee W. Hodges Jr., Clarence Benard Jr. and Melvin Burdine.

The flower bearers will be the women of Ware Chapel C.M.E.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Okla.

Doyl Brown

Dec. 30, 1932 – Aug. 27, 2013

Doyl Jackson Brown, a Seminole county resident for 40 years, passed away at his home Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013 at the age of 80.

Doyl was born on Dec. 30, 1932 in Tribbey, Okla. to parents, George Frank Brown and Minnie Jewel (Lane) Brown.

After graduating from high school, Doyl attended college for two years and then joined the United States Army.

After 21 years of service he retired from the military with the rank of E7 and began a career as a Dairy Farmer and a truck driver for C & J Trucking.

He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Holdenville, Okla.

Doyl married Patsy Jean Welcher in Colorado Springs, Colo. on April 26, 1954.

Doyl is survived by his wife, Patsy Brown of the home; two sons, Johnie Brown of Sapulpa, Okla., Paul Brown of Seminole, Okla.; one daughter, Donna Borner of Menomonie, Wis.; two sisters, Vina Castro, of Jamestown, Calif. and Faye Brown of Chickasha, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Shaun Borner, Chris Borner, Ryan Borner, Greg Borner, Justin Brown, Cole Brown and Jaycie Bowman and 17 great grandchildren.

Doyl was preceded in death by his parents, George and Minnie Brown; three brothers; two sisters; and three great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Allen Lewis officiating. Burial will take place at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens of Seminole.

Casket bearers are grandchildren Shaun Borner, Chris Borner, Ryan Borner, Greg Borner, Justin Brown and Cole Brown.

Funeral Information: Sept. 3, 2013, 2:00 p.m.

John Brown

John M. Brown, 80, longtime Seminole County resident, died of a brief but hard battle with leukemia.

John passed in his sleep to be with his Lord on the morning of Aug. 6, 2013.

He was born May 1, 1933 in Coldwater, Michigan.

John served with honor in Korea as a sergeant in the Marine Corps.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion.

He worked for Allied Chemical in Los Angeles, Calif. where he met the love of his life, Edith Harper from Wewoka, Okla.

After both Edith and John retired from Allied Chemical they moved to Wewoka in the late 80's, the town where Edith was born and raised.

John later worked for 11 years at Moore's IGA in Wewoka until his health started to fail; he recently stated it was the best job he ever had.

John was a devoted Catholic and a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church Wewoka for 34 years until his death.

Preceding John in death are his parents, Oscar Brown and Rut Briggs; his wife, Edith Munger Brown; brother, Gary Brown; and nephew, David Shurley.

Survivors include nephews, David Brown and wife, Christine of St. Louis, Mo, , Randolph Stephenson of Wewoka, Robert Horton of McLoud, and Samuel Horton of Wewoka, Timothy Harper of Tulsa, and Terry Harper of Broken Arrow; three nieces Donna Bowers, Karen Shurley both of Wewoka, and Anna Harper of Edmond; three sisters-in-law Louise Horton of Wewoka, Florence Harper of Tulsa, and Lucille Gibson of Bartlesville and a host of other relatives and friends.

Pall bearers will be Dustin Horton, Jareo Horton, Jess Horton, Robert Horton, David Brown, and Samuel Horton.

Honorary Pall bearers will be the men of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

In lieu of flowers, please give to the charity of your choice for leukemia research.

Rosary will be 6:30 Thursday August 8, 2013 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 at St Joseph Catholic Church in Wewoka with Father Brandon officiating and burial will follow at the Harper family cemetery.

Arrangements are by Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Jessica Brummett

Jessica Erin Guinn Brummett, 35, Seminole resident died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013 in Seminole.

She was born Sept. 16, 1978 in Oklahoma City, Okla. to Connie Kay (Briscoe) Guinn and Estel James Guinn, Jr.

She was a self-employed business owner and had moved to Seminole two years ago from Stillwater, Okla.

She married Brian Brummett on April 15, 2011 in Pine Bluff, Ark.

She is survived by her husband, Brian Brummett of the home; two sons, Landon and Chase; one brother, Justin Guinn, and her mother Connie Kay (Briscoe) Guinn.

Graveside services are planned for 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2013 at the Non Cemetery south of Calvin, Okla.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Vidalia Bruner

Vidalia "Vi" Bruner went home to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, Jan. 14th, 2013 at the age of 90 years.

She was born Dec. 12th, 1922 in Sasakwa, Okla. to the late Lester and Molly (Cudjo) Lewis.

Vidalia married Nathen Bruner Sept. 24, 1941 in Seminole, Okla. He preceded her in death on Feb. 10, 1977.

Ms. Bruner was a cook for many years at Morgan Restaurant in Wewoka.

She moved to Wewoka about six years ago from Sasakwa.

Her passion while living in the country was raising a garden, canning, chickens, hogs, and goats.

She was a member of Old Middle Creek Baptist Church.

Preceding Vidalia in death are her grandmother, Fie Ceasar (age 105); grandfather, Pete Lewis; parents; step-son, Melvin Bruner; two sisters, Mabel Lewis and Liddy Foster; two brothers, Cephus and Cesar Lewis.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013 at New Life Church with Rev. C.L. Prevost and burial will follow at Thomas Town Cemetery in Sasakwa.

Arrangements are by Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Jack Bryant

Jack Warren Bryant, 68, passed away April 22, 2013.

The son of Jack and Dee Bryant, Jack was born Sept. 17, 1944 in Seminole, Okla.

On Sept 9, 1967, Jack married the love of his life, Joyce Kaye Brown and together they shared more than 45 years of marriage and raising a family.

He was the manager of Graham’s Central Station for many years.

In his spare time, Jack enjoyed golfing, riding motorcycles, but his most enjoyable moments were those he spent with his family, friends and dogs. He will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He leaves cherished memories with his wife of 45 years, Kaye Bryant; son, Tim Bryant; daughter, Gayle Hedrick and husband, Bryan; grandchildren, Josh Morris, Nevin Bryant, Collin Bryant, Paige Ely, Brennah Bryant, and Karleigh Bryant; and countless other loving family and friends.

Viewing will be at Vondel Smith & Son Mortuary from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday with the family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Wilmont Place Baptist Church (6440 S. Santa Fe, OKC).

Committal services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole, Okla.

Services are under the direction of Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary at South Lakes, 4000 SW 119th St. OKC, Okla.
