Vera Dacus

Vera Lucille ‘Lucy’ Dacus went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Oct. 6, 2013, just fourteen months after her beloved Foy.

She was living in Colorado Springs, Colo. with her daugher, Janie.

Lucy was born May 22, 1914, in Cauthon, Ark. to Emmett and Elzora Williams Johnson. Her family soon moved to Ada, Okla.

Lucy completed high school at the age of 17 and continued her education at East Central College. She completed her degree with a double major in music and education.

After graduation, she taught in Bowlegs and Mason, where she met her dear friends, Hazel, Esther, and Margie.

Lucy moved to Seminole to teach. She always taught in the primary grades and was an excellent teacher.

Lyle Boren arranged a blind date for her with a handsome young man named Foy Dacus.

He became the love of her life! They celebrated their 75th anniversary together Jan. 31, 2012. It is impossible to tell Lucy’s story without Foy.

World War II began and Foy knew that he had to enlist. Lucy worked for the commander of the base in Liberal, Kans. until Foy received orders to go overseas.

She moved back to Seminole. It was the most difficult time of their life.

Foy came back to Seminole and was offered the opportunity to go into the insurance business.

He and Lucy went to insurance school in Baltimore, Md., where they both graduated although Lucy never worked a day in the insurance office.

After the war, they bought a home in Seminole and Lucy taught school.

She and Foy had a baby boy, Foy Neil, who died very tragically at birth. This was another difficult time in their lives.

About 18 months later, Jane Carol ‘Janie’ was born. Lucy stopped teaching to be the mom she had always wanted to be. She loved to call her family the ‘Three D’s." She was an incredible mother in every way.

Lucy faced several health issues but conquered each of them.

After Janie went to college, Foy and Lucy brought their foster daughter, Connie, into their home. What a delightful experience!

Foy and Lucy were long-time members of First United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school for years in the primary department.

They were a part of the wedding ring class and their Christian faith was the most important thing in their life.

Lucy began the Tuesday Morning Ladies Bible study, teaching until she was 95 years old. She loved each of her ‘girls’ with all her heart.

She played the piano at many church events. Lucy loved the Wesleyan Service guild.

Lucy went to Camps Farthest Out in the mid-1960’s and it changed her life. She and Foy were integral parts of Rivergate where Lucy would help in the kitchen or enjoy retreat time with the ladies.

Lucy had an extensive library and read and studied her books daily early in the morning. She was a devout student of the Bible.

Lucy and Janie enjoyed a trip to Israel in 1973.

Foy and Lucy bought a place on Lake Eufaula. Her family and many friends had very special times there. They would host large groups of friends, especially Janie’s friends.

They made friends and were a part of the First United Methodist Church in Eufaula during the summer months. Foy, Lucy and Janie so loved their cottage on the lake.

Lucy was given the opportunity to return to teaching. She taught music and third grade at Pleasant Grove.

After retirement, they bought a motor home and toured the United States. Lucy was the navigator, keeping detailed notes on the places they visited.

They spent six weeks every summer in Lake City, Colo. at Henson Creek Park with other dear Seminole friends.

In 1981, Blake Dacus was born and in 1986, Sarah Ruth arrived. How they loved their grandchildren.

Lucy would read to them for hours on end and teach math facts. She cherished her time with Blake and Sarah until the day she died.

She and Foy were able to know and love their great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Raelea and ‘Little Foy.’ They had a very special relationship with ‘the children.’ Barbara Pritchard became a ‘special friend’ and a very important part of Lucy and Foy’s life. Lucy loved her family and friends.

Lucy was preceded in death by her dear husband, Foy; her infant son, Foy Neil; her parents; her step-father, Dr. E.H. Nelson; her brothers, Fred and Emmett Hal; her sister, Gelene Gay; and her niece, Sue Johnson.

She is survived by her daughter, Janie; grandchildren, Blake Dacus and Sarah Ruth; great grandchildren, Elizabeth, Ayden, Raelea and Foy; two nephews, Bill Johnson and Richard Johnson and two nieces, Gayle Harris and Kristen Johnson Wilding; and her dear sister-in-law, Pauline Johnson.

Lucy was a faithful member of P.E.O. She belonged to Garden Club too. Years ago, Foy and Lucy enjoyed a couples Bridge club.

Lucy touched everyone she met. She truly loved and cared about the people God put in her life.

At the age of 97, it became necessary to move closer to Janie. Though leaving Seminole was difficult for both of them, they remarked after just two weeks in Colorado with their family – "if we had known this would have been this good, we would have done it five years ago!"

We made the most of every day we had with them. Foy and Lucy Dacus will be missed but we know they are holding hands and seeing friends while worshipping Jesus face to face.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced soon.

Memorials may be sent to the Jasmine Moran Children’s Museum in Lucy’s name.
