James Dodson

Graveside services for James Daniel "Jamey" Dodson will be held Monday, June 24, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bearden Cemetery in Bearden, Okla.

He was born Feb. 19, 1939 in Cromwell, Okla. to Johnny Roy Dodson and Algoma (Stevens) Dodson.

He died Tuesday, June 18, 2013 at his home in Cromwell at the age of 74.

He had been a resident of Cromwell, Okla. most of his life.

He served his country with the United States Army having been stationed in Germany as a tank driver.

He worked many years as a drywall finisher.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Johnny Dodson and Algoma and Henry Carpenter; his two sons, John and Daniel Dodson; two sisters, Alpha Lee McBeth and Geraldine Wallis and five brothers, AJ Dodson, Johnny Dodson, Boyce Dodson, Billy Dodson and Bill Dodson.

Survivors include two sisters, Irene Churchwell of Shawne and Loyce Brown of Phoenix, Ariz.; three brothers, Edward Dodson of Wewoka, Bobby Dodson of Sun City, Ariz. and Archie Dodson of Ariz.; a host of grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.

Viewing and visitation will be Thursday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. The Dodson family will be at the funeral home Sunday 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. to greet family and friends.

Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Rev. Larry Chesser.

Richard Shelton "Dick" Doolin

The Lord called home another brave Marine, loving husband, father, grandfather Richard Shelton "Dick" Doolin home Saturday, June 1, 2013 with his family surrounding him at his home after fighting a long illness.

Richard "Dick" Doolin was born Aug. 14, 1935 in Manassa Colo. to Wade and Leta Doolin Botwell.

He later graduated from High School in Kirkland N.M.

He later served in the Korean Conflict with the United States Marine Corps.

Dick Married his soulmate of 44 years on Oct. 18, 1969 in Las Vegas Nev. and moved to Wewoka, Okla. working in the oil fields.

Dick and Carmen later owned DD's Drive Inn and Brunch and Lunch in Wewoka.

Dick loved to cook and enjoyed feeding so many of his life long friends. He brought so much joy and laughter to all who knew him.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents, and one sister; Elaine Hitti, and one grandson; Timothy Hamblin.

He is survived by his wife, Carmen Doolin; eight children, Kristy Hope of Wewoka, Ricky and wife Leslie Boyles of Holdenville, Ralph and wife Margo Doolin, Rick and wife Barbara Doolin, Ray Doolin, Rodney and wife Bonnie Doolin, Russell and wife Doreen Doolin, and Misty and husband Mike Hamblin all of New Mexico; grandchildren, Jessica Johnson of Wewoka, Jeffery Hope of Wewoka, Camron Hope of Wewoka, Edmund Lewis of Holdenville, Corey Doolin, Jason Doolin, Adam Doolin, Jeremy Doolin, Rebecca Gass, Richard Mathew Doolin, Rhett Doolin, Robyn VanDuren, Randal Doolin, Aaron Doolin, Ashley Doolin, Kelsie Doolin, Benjamin doolin, Jacob Doolin, Kyle Doolin, Chase Doolin, Brandon Doolin, Tiffany Hamblin, Talon Hamblin; and 20 great grandchildren; two neices; Linda Duchaine of Virginia Beach Va., Nancy Hooper of Mesa Ariz. and numerous other relatives and friends.

Funeral Service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday June 5, 2013 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel and interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home, Wewoka, Okla.

Pallbearers are Jeffery Hope, Zakkery Hope, Camron Hope, Dedric Johnson, Treyton Johnson, Rhett Doolin, and Edmund Boyles.

Honorary Pallbearers in loving memory of the late Jack Davis, George Cook, George Hand, Ray Sheffield, Therman Conger, Floyd Conger, and Victor Watts.

Malvin Dorsey

Malvin E. Dorsey, 58, Oklahoma City resident and former Seminole County resident died Tuesday, July 23, 2013 in Oklahoma City.

He was born Sept. 7, 1954 in Tulsa, Okla. to William Dorsey, Sr. and Mary (Harjo) Dorsey.

He graduated from Williamsburg, Kansas High School.

He was also a proud member of the Muscogee Creek Nation.

He married Tammy Hobbs on Aug. 23, 2011 in Eureka Springs, Ark.

He worked for the Sonic Corporation’s Maintenance group until be became ill.

Survivors include his wife, Tammy (Hobbs) Dorsey of the home; his mother, Mary (Harjo) Dorsey-Wood of Shawnee, Okla.; two sons, Travis Dorsey of Lawton, Okla., Vincent Dorsey of Norman, Okla. and one step-son, Shane Hobbs of Ark.; two daughters, Tonya Luna of Oklahoma City, Sonja Carr of Oklahoma City; four brothers, Steve Dorsey of Shawnee, Donald Dorsey of Tecumseh, Okla., Anthony Slinker of Oklahoma City, Michael Wood of Shawnee; three sisters, Julia Ned of Shawnee, Karen Slinker of Tulsa, Teresa Riley of Shawnee; and 20 grandchildren.

A wake service will be held 7:00 p.m., Friday, July 26, 2013 at Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church in Wewoka.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 27, 2013 at Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church in Wewoka with Rev. Houston Tiger, Abe Jackson, Thomas Little and Michael Wood officiating the service. Interment will follow at the Hawkins Family Cemetery.

Casket Bearers will be Nathan Dorsey, Dillon Dorsey, Thavo Luna, Trey Dorsey, Sonny Dorsey and Anthony Eckles.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Geneva Douglas

Funeral services for Geneva Douglas will be held Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 at 10:00 am. at the First Baptist Church in Okemah. Interment will follow at the Douglas Family Cemetery north of Okemah.

She was born Feb. 14, 1941 in Konawa, Okla. to James McCosar and Wisey (Emarthle) McCosar.

She died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013 in Tulsa, Okla. at the age of 72.

She was a longtime resident of the Okemah area. She was a 1959 graduate of the Haskell Institute in Lawrence, Kansas.

She and Harry Douglas were married Aug. 18, 1961 in Dallas, Tex.

She retired after 24 years of employment as a Johnson O’Malley (JOM) coordinator for Mason and Okemah schools.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Eastman Harjo and Dave Walters.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Douglas of the home, two sons, Bruce Douglas of McAlester and Ernest McPerryman of Morris, Okla.; one daughter, Alisa Douglas of Muskogee, Okla.; two brothers, Frank Harjo of Konawa and Keno King of Big Cypress, Fla.; two sisters, Emma Jean Harjo of Konawa and Lucy Tiger of Tempe, Ariz.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Bro. Keno King and assisted by Dale Smart.

Active pallbearers will be Chris Harjo, Jeremy Alberson, Jared Johnson, Clint Guthrie, James Foreman, Michael Johnson, Travis Harjo, Brett Douglas and Michael Hudson.

Honorary bearers include Roy Roberts, Glen Jones, Carney Roberts, Reuben Johnson, Tommy Emarthle and Johne Hicks.

A wake service will be held Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 pm. at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Okemah.

Lurena Douglas

Lurena (Gaulding) Douglas, 95 year-old, Earlsboro, Okla. resident passed from this life on Valentine’s Day Feb. 14, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Shawnee, Okla.

She was born Sept. 4, 1917 in Pottawatomie County, Okla. to parents Charlie Gaulding and Louella (Reed) Gaulding.

She was the second of four children. They all preceded her in death.

Lurena united with the New Hope Baptist Church of Earlsboro in 1930 under the leadership of Rev. G.W. Lane.

She later joined Emmanuel Temple of Praise and Deliverance in the year of 1999 where she remained a faithful member until the Lord called her home.

Lurena attended Hatulka School near Harjo, Okla. and Dunbar High School in Shawnee.

She joined New Harmony singers in 1965 where she was a very loyal member.

Lurena was also past president of the Senior Mission of New Hope Church.

Lurena was the mother of two daughters, Jaennetta Reed and Alversa Hardiman.

Her parents, three husbands, one granddaughter, Robin Moore and one great-great grandson, Matthew Wytch, also preceded Lurena in death.

Lurena leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Jaennetta Reed (Tredell Reed), of Shawnee, Alversa Hardiman of Oklahoma City, Okla.; seven grandchildren, Russell Gaulding of Oklahoma City, Norma Wycth (Steve Wycth) of Oakland, Calif., Adrain Gaulding of San Francisco, Calif., Ruth Weatherspoon (Jerome Weatherspoon) of Shawnee, Alberta Burrows of Shawnee, Lurena Russell (Lenard Russell) of Oklahoma City, Clarence Conway Jr. (Ghemelle Conway) of Oklahoma City. Nineteen great-grandchildren and eighteen great great grandchildren as well as a host of other relatives and a host of friends also survive her.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, 2013 at the Emmanuel Temple of Praise and Deliverance located at 37406 Westech Road in Shawnee. Pastor Odell Hardeman will be officiating the service. Interment will follow at Earlsboro Cemetery in Earlsboro.

Services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Debra Lynn Downey

Debbie Lynn (Shaw) Downey was born June 14, 1953 in Ada, Okla., to Sanford and Alma (Addington) Shaw and joined her Heavenly Father Friday, September 27, 2013 in Muskogee, Okla., surrounded by her family. She grew up in Konawa, Okla., and graduated from Konawa High School.

Debbie married the love of her life Homer Downey on October 9, 1970 in Vamoosa, Okla., a marriage that lasted over 42 years. She and Homer moved to Fort Gibson soon after and a career as the Nutritional Supervisor began for Fort Gibson Public Schools.

Debbie was a member of the Busy Baker Association and quite the sports fan, making sure to be at every sporting event her kids and grandkids were involved in. She loved the Oklahoma State Cowboys and loved to shop, make crafts and camp. She always had an ice chest on the porch full of ice for a camping trip.

Debbie loved to bowl, but jet skiing was her passion, having to be towed back from the middle of the lake on numerous occasions because she ran out of gas. She was a member of Timothy Baptist Church and was quick to volunteer for anything that involved children, especially Vacation Bible School. Debbie and Homer’s time spent riding their motorcycle was one thing she loved most.

Debbie leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband; Homer of their home, five children; Sheresa Downey and partner Jennifer Johnson of Tulsa, Okla., Tony Downey and wife Tina of Fort Gibson, Okla., Sarah Downey-Adams and boyfriend Rube Blevins of Konawa, Okla., Timothy Downey and wife Leisha of Fort Gibson, Okla., and Sharla Downey Hepler and husband Matthew of Claremore, Okla., Charles Adams of Muskogee, Okla., ten grandchildren; Brandon Downey, Afton Adams, Shayla Adams, Trent Downey, Justice Johnson, Klaire Downey, Tate Hepler, C.J. Adams, Zane Hepler and Sveta Hepler, two sisters; Carla Dixon and Darla Kelley and husband Dean all of Konawa, Okla., in-laws; Evelyn March of Glencoe, Okla., Ruth Downey Duck and husband Roger of Konawa, Okla., Rex Downey and wife Janice of Chickasha, Okla., dearly beloved cousin; Marie Farris, other cousins, extended church and school family and many friends.

Debbie was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters; Sandra Shaw and Debbie Sue Wheeler, a nephew; Galand Kelley and in-laws Laura Marie Downey and Floyd Edward Downey.

A visitation will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2013 with the family receiving friends from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home in Fort Gibson.

A celebration of Debbie’s life will be held Thursday, October 3, 2013 at 10 A.M. at Timothy Baptist Church with Pastor Kelly Payne officiating. Interment will follow at Citizens Cemetery in Fort Gibson with Brandon Hyslope, Shane Hyslope, Colby Hyslope, Stephen Kuestersteffen, Trent Neffendorf and Matthew Franklin serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers are Tyrel Brown, Scott Holuby, Erik Holuby, Brett Holuby, Jimmy Duck, Billy Dixon, James Michael Shaw and Frank Kelley.

Helen Downing

Lifelong Seminole resident, Helen C. Downing, died Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at the age of 88, at the Seminole Care and Rehabilitation Center in Seminole.

Helen was born Nov. 4, 1924 in Wewoka, Okla. to Albert and Letha (Floyd) Slay.

Helen grew up in the Seminole area and attended Seminole Public Schools.

Helen was one of the first employees of Blue Bell (now Wrangler) where she worked for many years.

Helen also worked as a waitress at Granny Fern's and the Bus Station, along with owning/operating, for a short period of time, a restaurant with her husband on Main Street.

Helen was a member of the Church of God (now Heartland Family Church) in Seminole. She loved to sing hymns during her time at the Seminole Care and Rehabilitation Center and had many of the staff singing along with her.

She was formerly a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary where her husband served as commander for many years. During that time she began her love of playing bingo and would engage in a game of bridge with her friends before the bingo games began.

Helen loved watching television especially her soap operas and was an avid Braves fan, along with many other sports.

Helen married James M. Downing on Oct. 11, 1945 in Ada, Okla. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1997.

Helen is survived by four daughters, Nancy George and her husband Allen of Midwest City, Okla., Cecilia Coker and her husband Bill, Debbie Lewis and her husband Scott and Terry Poulter and her husband Richard all of Seminole, Okla.

She is also survived by daughter-in-law Melodie Osburn of Oklahoma City; six grandchildren, Greg Osburn, Todd George, Jason Lewis and wife Allison, Jamie Downing and wife Liz, William Coker, Jr. and Magan Coker and Jose Lopez. In addition six great grandchildren; Areonna Harjo, Dazia McCulley, Leah McCulley and Saorirse Downing all of Seminole Okla., Nathan Lewis and Taylor Lewis of Dallas, Tex.; and five step great grandchildren, Lilly Fox, Dakota Beaver, Jessica Beaver, Kyah Fox and Miracle Parrish. She is also survived by two brothers and sisters-in-laws, Jack and Virginia Slay of Perry, Okla. and Bobby and Opal Slay of Duncanville, Tex. and one sister, Glenda Von Elling of Seminole, Okla.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James Downing; son Glen Osburn on July 10, 2010; two brothers, James Slay and Leroy Slay; and step father, Noel Edney.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 12, 2013 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Dr. Doug Melton officiating. Burial will follow at the Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole, Okla.

Casket bearers will be her five grandsons and her nephew, Jeff Von Elling.

Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole
