Bobby Gene Hays, long time Seminole county resident passed away Friday, May 17, 2013 in Okemah, Okla. at the age of 80.
Bobby was born April 3, 1933 in Hughes County to parents, Bedford Hays and Opal (Smith) Hays.
Bobby served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956 where he earned the rank of Sergeant First Class and later he joined the National Guard Unit in Wewoka, Okla.
Bobby graduated for Yeager High School, moved to Seminole in October of 1962 from Holdenville, Okla.
He was a member of the Episcopal Church, a charter member of the Elks Lodge, he was a union steward for the Teamsters Truckers Union and met with union officials during all contract negotiations.
He also loved playing golf.
Bobby was employed with Wonder Bread for 33 years. He started as a route salesman, where he was promoted to branch manger and then retired in 1995 as a district supervisor.
Bobby married Juanita Carlton on Oct. 12, 1966 in Holdenville, Okla.
Bobby is survived by his wife, Juanita Hays; one son, Jonathan Hays and his wife Tonya of Alma, Ark.; three brothers, Tommy Hays, Jerry Hays both of Oklahoma City, Okla. and David Hays of Denton, Tex.; two sisters, Jewel Babiak of Hennessey, Okla. and Darlene Hays of Carrolton, Tex.; one daughter-in-law, Elisha Hays of Seminole, Okla.; four grandchildren, Justin Hays and his wife Suzanne of Alma, Ark., Zachary Hays of Alma, Ark., Tanner Hays of Seminole, Okla. and Matthew Hays of Seminole, Okla.
Bobby was preceded in death by son, Timothy Carlton Hays.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at the Strothers Historic Chapel inside Maple Grove Cemetery.
Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Okla. is in charge of arrangements.
Luster Heffley
Luster Lee Heffley, 84 year-old, Maud, Oklahoma resident passed from this life on Monday, Oct. 14, 2013 at his home in Maud.
He was born Aug. 15, 1929 in Seminole, Okla. to parents Rancie Charley "Rance" Heffley and Neather Ethel (Mitchell) Heffley.
Luster graduated from Harjo High School in 1948 and went on to join the United States Army.
He married Joyce Ruth Renfro on April 6, 1950 in Chandler, Okla.
Luster went on to earn his Associates degree in Business from Seminole State College.
Sadly his wife Joyce preceded him in death on Sept. 26, 2012 after 62 years of marriage.
Following his service to our country Luster worked as a ground safety specialist at Tinker Air Force Base in Midwest City, Okla. until his retirement in 1987.
Luster had also served on the Maud Public School Board of Education for many years.
He later worked as a bus driver for Maud Public Schools for several years.
Luster had served as the Mayor of Maud and was also a charter member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served the Lord in many capacities including, serving as a Deacon and as the Church Treasurer.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Lance Heffley and his wife Teresa of McLoud, Okla.; two daughters and son-in-law, Susan Williams and her husband Frank of Maud, Lisa Prince of Maud; three brothers, Marvin Heffley of Maud, Robert Heffley of Tishomingo, Okla., Donnie Heffley of Shawnee, Okla.; two sisters, Fern Mayo of Lawton, Okla., Martha Lewis of Tex.; seven grandchildren, Cody Williams, Jessie Williams, Darin Heffley, Eddie Heffley, Chris Edwards, Jason Wolf, and Ashley Parris; five great-grandchildren, Gavin Williams, Jaxon Williams, Jesslyn Williams, Lyric Wolf, Liberty Wolf and on great-grandchild is on the way.
Luster was prededed in death by his parents; his wife Joyce Heffley; one brother, Chester Heffley; and two sisters, Revenia Vance and Shirley Coon.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 at Trinity Baptist Church in Maud. Glen Williams will officiate the service.
Casket bearers will be Cody Williams, Jessie Williams, Darin Heffley, Jason Wolf, Caleb Parris and Eddie Heffley.
Honorary bearers will be Frank Williams, Gavin Williams and Chris Edwards.
Services are under the direction of Knight-Swearingen Funeral Home in Maud.
Betsy Hewitt
Funeral services for Betsy Sue Hewitt will be held Monday, March 11, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at the Greenleaf Baptist Church in Okemah. Interment will follow at the Little Quarsity Cemetery in Seminole County.
Wake services will be held Sunday, March 10, 2103 from 7:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Parks Brothers Funeral Home Chapel in Okemah.
Betsy was born Aug. 10, 1942 in Seminole County, Okla. to Billy Hale and Lucy (Coker) Hale.
She died Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at her home in Okemah at the age of 70.
She was a longtime resident of the Okemah area and was a former home health care worker.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband Melford Hewitt; one sister, Mary Randall and two brothers, Anderson and Jacob Hale.
Survivors include her two daughters, Betsy Varner of Okemah and Candice Cheatwood of Okemah; one step-daughter, Delores Early of Okemah; three brothers, Donald, David and Jasper Hale all of Okemah; four sisters, Joyce Hale of Okemah, Maggie Coon of Cromwell, Carolyn Tucker of Okemah and Marie Berryhill of Okemah; and one grandson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Franklin and Nathan Lowe, Dustin Tucker, Willie Hale, Kuskvna Deere and Victor Berryhill.
Honorary bearers include Joe Cheatwood, Cunnar Varner, Manuel Coon and Phillip Deere.
Services will be under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home, Okemah and officiated by Rev. Fred Lindsey.
Viewing and Visitation will be Saturday, 12:00 until 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 until 8:00 p.m.
Gary Hicks
Gary Hicks, publisher of The Lone Grove Ledger, died March 23, 2013. He was 68.
Hicks was born on June 28, 1944, in Jimtown, Okla.
He earned his Bachelor of Business from North Texas State University in Denton, Tex. And did master’s work in journalism at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Okla.
A Vietnam veteran, he served in Saigon.
He married his wife of 38 years, Linda Sue Batchelor in Dallas, Tex., on Dec. 28, 1974. The couple moved to Marietta in 1976 to open the first of three pizzerias.
On March 16, 1980, the Hicks moved to Lone Grove and on Jan. 5, 1983, they established and published their first edition of The Lone Grove Ledger.
In 1985, they added Quality Printing and Graphic Design to their publishing company.
Gary was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club of Lone Grove, and a founder of the Lone Grove Chamber of Commerce.
He is survived by his wife, Linda; two granddaughters, Kristin Hicks Underwood of Seminole and Bethany Hicks of Tecumseh; a grandson, Tyler Hicks of the home in Lone Grove; a great-granddaughter; sister, Maxine Reed of Ardmore; and brother, Glyn Edward Hicks of Marietta.
Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, 16773 U.S. Highway 70, in Lone Grove.
Dave ‘Roman’ Hill
One Seminole resident will leave a hole in the lives of many, many people as he leaves this earth to enter his eternal life.
Dave "Roman" Hill, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2013 at Integris Baptist Hospital in Oklahoma City; he was 66 years old.
He will be joining his wife, Dora "Tootsie" May (Carbitcher) Hill, who preceded him in death October 3, 2009. Loving, devoted parents, now angels in heaven, will be watching over and protecting the family they have left behind.
Hill was a loving husband, supportive father, brother, uncle, devoted grandfather, and dear friend.
A man with a constant smile on his face and a devilish twinkle in his eyes, Hill would always have a few minutes to speak to anyone or everyone who came around him.
He was an outgoing guy who took the time to help others and loved so many, never asking for anything in return.
Hill loved teasing and joking with his family and those closest to him.
Along with his huge smile, endless hugs and boisterous laughter, he was the leader of his family and they respected that position.
"He was a really great guy, " said Seminole Police Lieutenant Tommy Mackey. "I never saw him without a smile on his face."
Born Dec. 18, 1946 in Hanna, Okla. to Jack Isaac and Mary (Proctor) Hill, he called the Seminole area home for over 40 years.
Hill not only cared for his family, he served his country for over 20 years in the military. Enlisted in the Army and the National Guard, he retired as a Sergeant,
He served in Vietnam and Desert Storm, during his military career.
Hill was a member of Trenton Baptist Church and also attended Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church in Wewoka.
As a man of many talents, he liked to keep to the old Indian traditions of the Muskogee/Creek tribe. He also belonged to the Tallahassee Wvkokaye Ceremonial Ground.
Hill loved to attend the Indian pastimes of the stomp dance and pow-wows. He also enjoyed making the women’s turtle shells for the dances as well as the traditional balls used in stick ball games.
But a big part of his love and life was playing with his grandchildren, whom he enjoyed having around him. He loved spending time with his children and attending ballgames.
Hill was a major OU football fan and a big Thunder Basketball fan. He would good-naturedly rib anyone who thought otherwise.
On Nov. 12, 1971 Hill married "Tootsie" in Bowlegs, OK; together they raised seven children and helped raise grandchildren.
"Those little ones are our blessings, " he would say.
Those left behind to mourn the loss of a wonderful man are: four sons, Michael "Rabbit" Hill and Bea Fry of Dewar, Okla., Jack Hill of Seminole, Isaac Hill of Ada, OK and Davy "Buffalo" Hill, Jr. and Audrey McCall of Glenpool, OK; three daughters, Sally "Tooter" and Jason Browning, Natasha "Tasha" Hill, and Kristy Hill all of Seminole, five brothers, Jacob and Marcie Hill of Dewar, OK, Josie Hill of Sulphur, OK, Billy and Maria Hill and Unice Hill both of Okmulgee, OK, and Chapman Hill of Bristow, OK, three sisters, Lillie Hill of Checotah, OK, Amy Hill of Okemah, OK, and Maxine Hill of Weleetka, OK; twenty-one grandchildren, Wynter "Mockingbird", Summer "Mes’ke", Marion "Chebon" Wind and Christian "Hoktuce" Wind-Brauning, Gavin and Jared Hill, Alesha Hill, and Jon-Jon "Possum" Arredondo, all of Seminole; Eman Fry of Dewar, OK, Lindsey Nicole Dennison of Sapulpa, OK, Elijah "Sioux", Dominic "Winnie", Hannah "Triple H", Isaac Jack "Old Man Hill all of Ada, OK, Matthew Kobe Hill of Wewoka, Daven "Chunda" Darrin "Chubby", Dallon Hill all of Fort Hodd, TX, Ryleigh "Abella", Chloie "Clara" Hill both of Paden, OK, Davy Roman "Lil Buff" Hill III of Glenpool, OK; two great grandchildren, Gracelynn May Hill and Aaliyah Raghoebar, both of Seminole.
Other survivors include brother-in-laws Freeland "Rusty" Carbitcher of Shawnee, Jimpsey "Bogi" Carbitcher, Seminole, and Cooky "Toby" Carbitcher, of Lawton; sister-in-laws, Pat Larney of Shawnee, Betty Jean "Tina" and Gene Wahweah of El Reno, Marina "Tollie" and Roger Butler of Bowlegs, Serena "DoeDo" and Dewayne Scott; Nettie "B-girl" and David W. Haney Sr. all of Seminole, as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Hill was preceded in death by his wife, Dora May "Tootsie" Hill; his parents, Jack Isaac and Mary Hill; two brothers, Benji Hill and Dave Sonny Hill; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jimpsey and Nancy Mae Carbitcher; and brother-in-law Younger "Sonny" Carbitcher.
Visitors are encouraged to lift up the family in prayers as well as join in the traditional Indian customs of visitation.
Hill will be taken to his daughter’s home at 11475 NS 3510 #201 in Earlsboro at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 10.
He will remain there until Friday at 4 p.m. He will then be moved to the Sandcreek Eufaula Baptist Church in Wewoka.
Traditional Indian customs will be ongoing throughout the week. Wake services will begin Friday evening, April 12 at Sandcreek.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Sandcreek Eufaula Baptist Church with burial to follow at Jimmy Carbitcher Family Cemetery in Bowlegs.
Military honors will be followed to respect the years and devotion he gave to his country.
Rev. Jimsey Harjo and Rev. Houston Tiger will officiate.
Brandon "Huba" Harjo, Rylan "Goo" Mack, Benny Tiger, J.C. Simpson, Ruben Proctor and Jimmy Tiger will serve as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers are B.J. Hill, Sherman Hill, Saul Hill, Steve Hill, Shawn Hill, Jeff Hill and Joe Sulphur.
