Margaret Marquis

Margaret Joan "Jo" Marquis long time Seminole resident died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013 in Seminole, Okla. at the age of 82.

She was born April 10, 1931 in Bowlegs, Okla. to Thomas Franklin Nelon and Cora Bell (Brown) Nelon.

She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and taught in Van, Tex. for five years.

She married Billy G. Marquis on April 23, 1948 in Seminole.

She is survived by her husband, Billy Marquis; three daughters, Brenda Lozano of Lindale, Tex., Linda Silvey of Mineola, Tex. and Cindy Chambers of Midland, Tex.; one brother Cecil Nelon of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one sister, Peggy Jackson, of Seminole, seven grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Cora Bell Nelon; one brother, Dale Nelon and three sisters, Gladys Farmer, Elena Tuttle and Polly Patterson.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at the Church of Christ of Seminole with Chris Stinnett officiating. Burial took place at Little Cemetery, Seminole County, Oklahoma.

Casket bearers were Michael Lozano, Alan McCracken, Luke Chambers, Anthony Campos, Terry Silvey and Jason Phelps.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

Tom Marshall Jr.

Tom Marshall, Jr., 49, Wewoka resident died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013 in Wewoka, Okla.

He was born July 30, 1964 in Shawnee, Okla. to Rose M. (Stapp) and Tom O. Marshall, Sr.

He worked as a ground maintenance man at the Ada Country Club and Shawnee Country Club for many years.

He is survived by his parents, Tom and Rose Marshall, Sr. of Meeker, Okla.; three daughters, Jenny Marshall of Midwest City, Tiffany Marshall of Claremont, Fla. and Hannah Marshall of Seminole; two sons, Tommy Marshall of Claremont, Fla. and Troyce Marshall of Seminole; five brothers, Curtis Marshall and Stoney Marshall of Meeker, Terry Marshall of Midwest City, Ron Harris of Norman, and Ray Harris of Tishomingo; and a sister Ann Marshall of Midwest City; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Margaret Wright, PK Stapp, George Marshall and Mamie Marshall.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole. Rev. Derryck Phillips will officiate, and burial will follow at the Harjo Family Cemetery East of Bowlegs.

Wake services will be held 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 19, 2013 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel, with Sam Johnson and Edwin Marshall officiating.

Casket bearers will be Troyce Marshall, Ramey Harrison, Ron Harris, Ray Harris, Terry Marshall, Stoney Marshall and Curtis Marshall.

Honorary bearers will be Edwin Marshall, Brock Carman, JD Marshall, Jr., Tommy Marshall and Donnie Marshall.

Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Bettie Marshall

Bettie Ann (Cherry) Marshall, long time Seminole County resident died Friday, March 8, 2013 in Seminole, Okla. at the age of 70.

She was born July 9, 1942 in Coleman, Tex. to Ralph Homer Cherry and Bonnie (Jennings) Cherry.

She was a waitress most of her life.

She married James Marshall in Seminole, Okla. on Jan. 5, 1981.

She is survived by her husband, James Marshall of the home and one daughter, Sherri Wade of Detroit, Mich.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Bonnie Cherry; two sons, Terry Marshall, and Jerry Marshall; and one daughter, Debbie Catrell.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, 2013 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Rev. Allen Wood officiating. Burial will take place at Little Cemetery, Little, Okla.

Casket bearers will be Jerry Atkinson, James Bradley Marshall, Casey Joe Wildcat, Jerod Marshall, Michael Wade and Jamie Hughes.

Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

Catherine Mason

Catherine Ann Mason, 51, longtime Seminole County resident died Sunday, Oct. 6, 2013 at Prague Community Hospital.

She was born June 26, 1962 in Alva, Okla.

She was a homemaker.

She married John Ray Mason on April 21, 1979 in Seminole.

Survivors include her husband, John Mason of the home; one son, Jonathon Mason of the home; two daughters, Kathleen Madron of Shawnee, Monica Harrelson of Chandler; two brothers, Mike Temple of Collinsville, Okla., Chuck Temple of Tulsa; five sisters, Cindy Kearns of Tulsa, Shirley Rowley of Tulsa, Sandra Foutch of Wendell, N.C., Carol Jo Vance of Wewoka, Cheyenne Chroup of Grove; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Ethelda Lou Temple; one sister, Elyssa Monday; and by one son, Johnny Ray Mason.

Memorial services are scheduled for 4:00 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11, 2013 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole.

Cremation services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Paul Mathews

Longtime Seminole County public servant and philanthropist Paul Mathews, 86 years old, died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013 at Midwest City Regional Hospital.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Friday, Dec. 27, 2013 at Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Okla. with Pastor Marvin Kehl and Greg Walker officiating the service. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013 at Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Mathews was born July 14, 1927 at Ninnekah, Okla., to parents, Leonard A. and Daisy (Casey) Mathews.

The family moved to Bowlegs when Mathews was five years old, and later to Seminole.

He left school early, working to support his family after his father died.

He attended school at Independent and Mountain View schools.

As a boy, he sold vegetables, picked peanuts, mowed and bailed hay.

His first real job was at the Seminole Bakery, where he worked up from sweeping floors and greasing pans to making bread and buns.

At 16, he worked at Rogers Lumber Yard, and at 19 went to work for Oklahoma Tire and Supply (Otasco).

It was at that time that he married Jane (Joyner) Matthews, who survives him of the home, after 65 years of marriage.

His jobs included Standard Motor Supply, Smith Tire and Seminole Ford, before he went on the road selling parts for parts stores.

In 1957 he ran for Seminole City Council and continued in that position until he ran for county assessor.

He served as assessor from 1959 to 1979.

He was named president of the state assessors’ association, and later was president of the county officers’ association.

After leaving county politics, Mathews went into real estate.

He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Realtors’ Association and organized the Seminole County Board of Realtors, on which he served as president for two years.

Mathews was responsible for financing dozens of homes for people who couldn’t get regular loans, often giving them a start in life.

In the meantime, the man who only finished eighth grade became a self-made millionaire, buying properties all over Seminole County.

Mathews was baptized into Carr City Baptist Church, and moved to the First Baptist Church Seminole in 1948.

He has been a member of the Lions Club and the Chamber’s Ag Committee.

He ran the Seminole Little League for several years in the 1960’s and helped build the ballpark behind the armory, the second field in the Municipal Park and renovated Oiler Park.

He also helped Wewoka build a ballpark by the golf course.

Mathews supported New Lima Schools in many ways, including the recent gift of a school bus.

In 1962, he was able to buy his beloved Mountain View School building, where he lived until his death.

Paul and Jane Mathews have one daughter, Latresa who is married to Greg Walker, and lives near Seminole; Paul has two grandchildren, Tina Walker who lives near Seminole and Timmy Walker, a student at Oklahoma State University.

Paul has a three year-old great-grandson, Eddie Haworth.

He is also survived by nephews, Tim Mathews, Leonard Mathews, Tommy Mathews and Rick Mathews. One niece, Peggy Howard, and a host of other family and dear friends.

Paul and Jane Mathews took in 12 children and supported them through school and college, and helped many of them get a start in life with homes and careers.

He also helped his five nephews when his brother, Roy, was drowned in Ohio in 1962.

He was also preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, Willie Francis, who died in 1928 at the age of one year.

Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Mamie Mathis

Mamie Jean Mathis of Holdenville, Okla. passed away in her home on Oct. 10, 2013.

She was born on March 7, 1930 to Charlie Amos and Beulla Bell (Lee) Williamson in Frances, Okla.

On Nov. 18, 1949 Mamie married Douglas H. Sipes in Mountain View, Okla. and together they started their family.

Throughout the years Mamie worked as a Nurses Aid and later retired.

Mamie is preceded in death by her parents, Charlie and Beulla (Lee) Williamson; her husband, Douglas H. Sipes; her son, Calvin Eugene Sipes; her sisters, Rosa Hawkins, Casamae Cross, Betty McAlester; her brother, Percy Williamson; her sister-in-law, Mable Williamson; her brother-in-law, Billy Sipes; her daughter-in-law, Cathy Sipes; her granddaughter, Lisa Sipes; her great grandson, Dylan Sipes; her nephew, Bobby Dean Sipes; and her great nephew, Donnie Sipes.

Mamie is survived by her sons, Douglas T. Sipes and wife Linda of Holdenville and Jimmy Ray Sipes of Wewoka; her grandchildren, Teddy Sipes and family, Justin Sipes and family, Clint Sipes, Jimmy Sipes and family, Danny Sipes and family, Amos Sipes and family, Brandi Sipes and her children, Jaimie Raff and family, Jennifer Sipes and her child, Jessica Richardson and family, Austin Sipes and his child; her siblings, Johnny Williamson, Loeva Sipes, Clara McIntire and husband Hughlan, Melvin Ray Williamson and wife Brenda; and many loved nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Memorial services for Mamie will be at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 at the Church of the Nazarene in Holdenville, with Pastor Dane Robinson Officiating.

Funeral services are under the direction of Hudson-Phillips Funeral Home in Holdenville.
