James McWhorter

James Theodore McWhorter of Ardmore died Friday, Jan. 4, 2013 in Veteran’s Center in Ardmore at the age of 66.

He was born March 4, 1946 in Chickasha, Okla. to parents, Jet McWhorter and Velma Opal (Swagtery) McWhorter.

He served in the United States Marine Corp. He was a life long member of the VFW and a retired barber.

He is survived by two sons, Robert Ray of Moore, Okla. and Michael McWhorter of Louisiana; two brothers, Louis Burl Davis of McComb, Okla., and Uylus Welch of Catoosa, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jet McWhorter; mother, Velma Opal McWhorter Davis; step father, Louis Ira Davis; sister, Betty Morris; and brother, Orvile Welch.

Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 at Rush Springs Cemetery in Rush Springs, Okla. Rev. Bill Chesser will officiate the service.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Maxine Melton

Maxine Ann Melton, a Wewoka resident, died in the Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City on Friday, May 10, 2013.

She was born to Wade and Mollie Gentry on Oct. 27, 1941 in Centrahoma, Okla.

Survivors include her husband, Arnold Melton of the home; two brothers, Ray and Roy Gentry; and one sister, Pauline Nowlin.

She was preceded in death by four siblings, Christine, Kelly, Doug, and Ilene.

Services will be held on Wednesday, 10:00 a.m. at the Bethel Pentecostal Church. Burial will be held at the Tinker AFB Cemetery in Oklahoma City, Okla. Rev. Martin and Donna Gustin will officiate.

Rachel Mendenhall

Rachel E. Mendenhall, 99, longtime Seminole resident died Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2013 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

She was born Nov. 5, 1913 in Glenco, Okla. to Leo W. and Agnes Octavia (Young) Adams.

She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her three sons, Robert Mendenhall of St. Louis, Mo., Kenneth Mendenhall of Seminole, and Joe Keith Mendenhall of Yale, Okla.; three daughters, Earlene Virginia Whitehead of Mannford, Okla., Carolyn Faye Copeland of Crescent, Okla. and Rita Ruth Sneed of Yale, Okla.; one sister, Nila Dawn Kolinske of Cooks, Mich.; 89 grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and 28 step grandchildren and great grand-children

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl Mendenhall; her son, Jerry Gene Mendenhall; a daughter, Maxine Naomi; two sisters; three brothers; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, Aug. 9, 2013 at the First Baptist Church in Seminole with Rev. Marvin Kehl officiating. Burial will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Gardens in Seminole.

Pallbearers will be Robert Mendenhall, Larry Bair, Sam Mendenhall, Terry Estes, Jonathan Mendenhall and Richard Buntin.

Honorary pallbearers will be Andrew Sneed and Joel Mendenhall.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Charles Merritt

Charles Ray Merritt, age 66 years died Oct. 2, 2013 at Select Speciality Hospital in Oklahoma City.

He was born June 24, 1947 to Cora (Lena) Green and Wesley Green Sr.

He graduated from Sequoyah Boarding School in May 1967.

He worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for years after relocating back to Seminole, he began working for the Seminole Nation Mysstic Winds Casino before retiring.

He married Myrna Tiger on Oct. 21, 1970.

Survivors include his wife, Myrna; son, Michael Merritt of Seminole; two daughters, Lee Ann McPerryman of Seminole, Brittany Merritt of Konawa; nine grandchildren; three brothers, Oscar Bunner, Billy Merritt, both of Seminole and Wesley Green Jr. of Wewoka; five sisters, Mary Woods of Maud, Linda Martin of Seminole, Kizzie Wildcat of Wetumka, Oshe Merritt and Vanessa Green of Wewoka.

Pallbearers will be Mose Meritt, Mel Lena, Gary Lena, Henson Lena, Roy Carpitcher and Bennie Tiger.

Honorary bearers will be Mvskoke Yargee, Tommy Culberson Sr, Jimmy Tiger, Junior Tiger and Francis Miller.

Wake services will be 6:00 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 5, 2013 at Stout-Phillips Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Billy Merritt.

Wake service will be Sunday Oct. 6, 2013 at Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Monday, Oct. 7, 2013 at Sand Creek Eufaula Baptist Church in Wewoka with Rev. Houston Tiger and Rev. Billy Merritt officiating and burial at Tiger Family Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Winford Millican

Winford "Doyle" Millican, 85, a former resident of Konawa, Okla. died Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at Ballard’s Nursing Center in Ada, Okla.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 30th at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Konawa. Mary Ann Dillon will officiate, and burial will be at Vamoosa Cemetery.

He was born April 7, 1927 in Milburn, Okla. to Louada Millican.

He served our country in the army and later worked as a truck driver in the agricultural industry.

He is survived by one brother, Edd Henson of Noble, Okla. and one sister, Celia Heath of Bethel Acres, Okla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Bobby Millican, one sister, Billie Millican, and his wife, Scharlotte.

Linda Minner

Linda Kay (Colbert) Minner was born Dec. 8, 1956 in Seminole, Okla. to Earl and Pearlena Colbert.

She was a student at Seminole High School, graduating in 1976.

she received an Early Childhood Education Associates Degree from Seminole State College. She also attended UCO in Edmond, Okla. and ECU in Ada, Okla.

She was employed as lead cook and buffet preparer at Western Sizzlin Restaurant.

She is survived by fiancé, Morris Thomas of Seminole; one daughter, Erica Burnett of Seminole; two sons, Brandon Minner of Seminole and Jonathan Minner of Seminole; one sister, Edna Wilson of Seminole; and seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Pearlena Colbert; three brothers, James Colbert, Charles Colbert and William Colbert; one sister, Carolyn Smith.

She died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013 in Midwest City, Okla.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013 at Ebenezer Baptist Church of Seminole with Bro. J.C. Simpson officiating. The church is located at 301 Gale Street in Seminole.

Cremation services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

David Mishler

David Monroe Mishler, Seminole resident passed away Jan. 5, 2013 at his home, at the age of 90.

He was born to Marion Frances and Eulalia Adeline (Ford) Mishler on July 24, 1922 in Birmingham, Iowa.

He grew up and attended school in Iowa.

He served in the United States Army during WWII.

He married the love of his life, Doris Marie Mishler on Aug. 7, 1943 and have celebrated 69 years of marriage.

David worked for the Department of Interior National Park Service for over 30 years, living in numerous locations before moving to Seminole 22 years ago after retirement.

He loved to quilt and play the organ at home and at church.

He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, April Eddy Tucker; brothers, Robert Mishler, Glen Mishler, and Donald Mishler; and sister, Cleta Vanslyke.

He is survived by his wife, Doris Marie Mishler of the home; his five children, David Mishler Jr. of West Cliffe, Colo., Darwin Mishler of Seminole, Dayle (Terry) Davies of Leesburg, Va., Diana (Mark) Eddy of Visalia, Calif., and Donella Mahoney of Seminole; seven grandchildren, Kevin Lock, Keith Lock, Melissa (David) Bekedam, Allison (Preston) Smith, Trissy (Keith) Wright, and Lisa (Will) Shaw; 15 great-grandchildren, Keana Lock, Kia Lock, Naysia Lock, Grant Isaac, Mark Tucker, Madison Tucker, Kenny Bekedam, Daniel Bekedam, Leah Bekedam, Alesha Wright, Eric (Lindsay) Lefthand, Dustin Lefthand, Zachary Lefthand, Kobe Mahoney Shaw, and K’Lee Shaw; two great-great-grandchildren, Bray’lee Lefthand, and Bryce’son Lefthand; and one sister, Dorothy Grace Black.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m., Friday Jan. 11, 2013 at Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee.

Maxine Mitchell

Maxine Sterling Mitchell was born Oct. 30, 1923 in Eldorado, Kans. to Hugh Harold and Irene Josephine Sterling.

She lived 86 or her 89 years in Seminole, Okla., graduating, from Seminole High School in 1941.

She attended Seminole Junior College and Business School.

Professionally, she worked as a bookkeeper including Pierce Equipment for 18 years and the last 35 years for United Truck Service.

Maxine was a life long member of First United Methodist Church of Seminole, Okla.

She was active in the Wesleyan Service Guild and later the United Methodist Women.

She taught kindergarten Sunday School for 25 years and held many offices at various times including serving as Chairperson of the Trustees, a member of the Pastor-Parish Relations Committee and a member of the Administrative Board.

Maxine particularly enjoyed cooking and serving at the Wednesday Night Dinners at church.

The pride of her life was her daughter, Jolynn and her grandchildren, Nathan Lowry and Sarah Lowry Meek. She was blessed with the birth of a great granddaughter, Grace Jean Meek, in March of this year.

Maxine is survived by her daughter, Jolynn Darland Lowry and her husband, Bishop Mike Lowry of Fort Worth, Tex.; her grandson, Nathan Lowry and his fiancé, Abigail Gabrielse of Lexington, Mass.; granddaughter, Sarah Meek and her husband, Steven Meek and great- granddaughter, Grace Jean Meek of Falls Church, Va.; cousin, Clara Jane Jones and her husband, Roscoe Jones of Monroe, La. and their three children and families, sister-in—law, Dolly Sterling of Westfield Center, Ohio and her three children and families.

Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Seminole, Okla. on Friday, July 19, 2013 at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Gary Wilburn and Bishop Mike Lowry officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the children’s ministry at the First United Methodist Church or the United Community Center of Ft. Worth, Tex. www.unitedcommunitycenters.org

Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

Julia Montin

Julia Ann (Bryant) Montin, 71, a former Seminole, Okla. resident died Saturday, May 18, 2013 at her home in Cushing.

She was born Nov. 3, 1941 in Seminole to Virgie Ruth (Carroll) Bryant and Charles Clayton "Duke" Bryant.

Following High School she attended East Central University in Ada, Okla. where she earned Bachelors of Science degree in education on May 14, 1971. She went on to earn her Masters of Science degree in education on July 30, 1975.

She was an educator at Earlsboro Public Schools in 1972. Then in 1973 she went on to teach at Cushing Public Schools until her retirement in 1997.

Survivors include her mother, Virgie Bryant of Seminole, Okla.; one son, Bill Montin of Cushing, Okla.; three daughters, Susan Jo Anderson of Drumright, Okla., Robin J. Tyer of Wyoming, Katherine Ruth Ward of Wagoner, Okla.; one brother, Frank Bryant of Shawnee, Okla.; two sisters, Carol Lee Hendricks of Cushing, Okla., Dorothy M. Eversole of Seminole, Okla.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren with one on the way.

She is preceded in death by her father, Charles Clayton Bryant; one grandson, Joshua J. Anderson.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Little Cemetery Chapel located in Little Cemetery. Rev. Carl Whitfield will officiate the service. Interment will follow at Little Cemetery.

Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Okla.

Texoma Moore

Texoma Moore, age 94, died on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013 in Sulphur, Okla.

She was a homemaker.

Graveside services will be held at the Resthaven Memorial Park in Shawnee at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 28, 2013.

Visitation will be Sunday, Jan. 27, at the Resthaven Funeral Home in Shawnee from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
