Shirley Nichols, 78
Oct. 1, 1934 – Feb. 22, 2013

Shirley Nichols, 78 year-old, Seminole, Okla. resident, peacefully passed from this life on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2013, in Seminole.

She was born Oct. 1, 1934, in Salem, Ill.

She has been reunited with her Lord, her father "Linden" Kenneth Reese, her mother Kathryn May (Rhoades) Reese Barber, her beloved stepfather, T.M. Barber, her brother Michael, and a baby boy who was still born at birth.

Left to mourn her loss are her brother, James Reese and his wife Carolyn of Boise Ida., her children, Patrick Elifritz of Panama, Okla., Catherine Moncada and her husband Tomas of Cottonwood Calif., Kelly Marshall and her husband Carson of Choctaw, and John Elifritz of Seminole, Okla.

Grandchildren include Philip and his wife Sarah Harrington, Michael Harrington, Kelly Estrada, Cammie Martinusen, Tina Marshall, Carson Marshall III and his wife Tiffany, Amber Frey and her husband David.

Great grandchildren include Logan and Brooke Harrington, Joey, Olivia and Landon Estrada, Zechariah Ruben, Bella and Carson IV, Blake Marshall and Colby Frey.

Shirley is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and other dear family and friends.

Ms. Nichols worked for the Seminole Producer; she worked her way up from writing book reviews and obituaries to Society Editor.

She was proud of her opportunity to interview David Carradine and Arlo Guthrie before "Bound for Glory" was filmed.

She also interviewed Dr. Christian Barnard, the world's first successful artificial heart transplant doctor.

Another notable interview was with Governor Henry Bellman.

Shirley was also a freelance writer with articles published in Redbook, Women's Day, and book reviews in the New York Times.

Law enforcement was the love of her professional life.

Ms. Nichols graduated from one of the first reserve schools held for the Seminole Police Department finding the work so fascinating she later applied and was hired.

She held certifications in fingerprinting and dispatching and attended college level classes related to interviewing victims of sex crimes.

Ms. Nichols retired from the Seminole Police Department in 1997 to care for her mother.

At the time of her retirement, she was the executive secretary to the chief. She had held positions within the police department as dispatcher, jailer, and communications supervisor prior to her promotion.

Shirley was a member of the Business and Professional Women organization and was named Woman of the Year in 1991.

She also enjoyed being a member of a local sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, which helped in the restoration of the historic Strother Chapel in Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole.

At one time Ms. Nichols sat on the board for the Oklahoma Oil Museum in Seminole.

She also volunteered at Interfaith, which provides food to families in need in Seminole County.

Her wishes were to be cremated with her ashes to be spread in Bryan Memorial Park in her beloved Salem, Ill.

A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 3, 2013, at the historic Strother Chapel located in Maple Grove Cemetery in Seminole, Okla. Chaplain Don Duncan of the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Department will officiate the service.

In lieu of floral arrangements, her wishes are for donations to be made to one of the following organizations: Seminole Humane Society, P.O. Box 88 Seminole, Oklahoma 74818-0088; The Jesus House, P.O. Box 60369, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73146; or please donate a book or monetary gift to the Oklahoma Oil Museum located at 1800 Wrangler Blvd., Hwy 9 West, Seminole, Okla., all in memory of Shirley Nichols.

Memorial services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole, Okla.

James Nicholson

James "Jim" Walter Nicholson was born Oct. 21, 1942 in Seminole, Okla. to Randle and Vina Nicholson.

He died Oct. 1, 2013.

He graduated from Seminole High School and served in the United States Air Force.

He married Rosanne on April 16, 1965.

He worked with Southwestern Bell which later became AT&T before retiring after a 30-year career.

He was preceded in death by his father, Randle; and brother, Bill.

He is survived by his wife, Rosanne of Yukon; his mother, Vina of Seminole; his son, Keith of Edmond, Bart of Yukon and daughter, Kara Seidel of Mustang; and two grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Guthrie Scottish Temple Restoration, PO Box 70, Guthrie, OK 73044.

Services to celebrate his life were at 2:00 p.m. Friday, Oct. 4 at Smith and Turner Funeral Home in Yukon.

Phyllis Nicholson

Phyllis Ann Nicholson, 62, longtime Seminole resident died, Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 in Seminole.

She was born June 18, 1950 in Oklahoma City, Okla. to Vernon Lloyd and Florence Edna (Thompson) Perry.

Phyllis graduated from Seminole High School in 1969 and married Lowell Thomas "Tommy" Nicholson on Oct. 3, 1970 in Seminole.

Phyllis worked for many years at Nichols Bestyet Grocery and also for Century 21.

She is survived by her husband, Tommy Nicholson of Seminole; one son, Jonathan Thomas Nicholson and his wife Laura serving in the U.S. Air Force; one daughter, Jennifer La Dawn Towler and her husband Tommy G. Towler of Norman, Okla.; one brother, Loyd E. Perry and his wife Doris of Pink, Okla., and a brother-in-law, John W. Nicholson Jr. and his wife Glenda of Seminole; two sisters-in-law, Barbara Crain and her husband Gary of Prague, Okla. and Jeanette Humphrey and husband Dwayne Thomas of Ft. Worth, Tex.; four grandchildren, Damian Thomas Nicholson, Brandon James Nicholson, Dustin Levi Nicholson and Tristan Grant Towler.

She was preceded in death by one son, Travis Dean Nicholson and her parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Chris Lee officiating assisted by Heath Sapp. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery.

Casket bearers will be Jerry Bray, Justin Bray, Bobbie Bray and Jonathan Nicholson.

Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

Claretta Norman

Claretta T. Norman, 94, longtime Konawa area resident died Monday, Nov. 25, 2013 in Midwest City, Okla.

Claretta was born Jan. 1, 1919 in Hughes County, Okla. to Shird Curtis and Lucille Pearl (Winkles) Merriman.

She moved back to the Konawa area in 1976 from California where she was a seamstress, after returning to Konawa she continued her seamstress work and was active in area quilting circles.

She loved to work in her garden and pick pecans and give them as gifts.

She married John Norman in Wewoka, Okla. on Dec. 30, 1938, he preceded her in death in July of 1993.

She is survived by her sons, Charles Norman and Nolan Norman of Shawnee, Okla. and R.C. Norman of Konawa, Okla.; two brothers, Gene Merriman of Las Vegas, Nev. and Dean Merriman of Ventura, Calif.; two sisters, Mildred Lancaster of Sasakwa, Okla. and Elvie Phillips of Seminole, along with seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Barbara Norman; and a son, Lonnie Norman.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Seminole with Joe Ligon officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Wewoka.

Funeral services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home in Seminole.

Virginia Norman

Funeral services for Virginia Elizabeth Norman, 84, will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the Lone Grove Church of Christ with Mr. Cougan Collins officiating. Interment will follow at the Lone Grove Cemetery in Lone Grove, Okla.

Services are under the direction of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home & Crematory, Ardmore, Okla.

Virginia was born to Andrew J. and Lillie (Chisholm) Brown on April 2, 1929 in Sasakwa, Okla.

She died on April 23, 2013, at her Ardmore residence.

Virginia had attended Cully Schools and was an active member of the Lone Grove Church of Christ.

She loved to sew and garden, but her greatest love was spending time with her family.

She was retired as an inspector from the Uniroyal/Michelin Tire Company.

She married Clyde Eugene Norman in Tishomingo, Okla. on April 13, 1947. Together, they ran the Fox grocery for six years and also owned the Norman Trailer Park in Lone Grove. He preceded her in death on March 4, 1995.

Her parents; husband; a son, Keith Norman-Harris; and a sister, Grace Harris, preceded her in death.

Virginia is survived by two daughters, Linda Surber of Ardmore, Okla., and Clydette Jones and her husband James of Lone Grove, Okla.; grandchildren, Robert "Herb" Surber of Ardmore, Okla., Jamie Popkess of Ardmore, Okla., Jim Harris of Healdton, Okla., Melissa Harris of Washington, Okla., Jim Smith of Fox, Okla., John Smith of Ardmore, Okla., Julene Howard of Wilson, Okla. and Pat Smith of Ringling, Okla.; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Casket bearers will be David Cormany, Neil Stitt, Mikeal Popkess, Don Owens, Gerald Neill and James Gravelle.

Honorary casket bearers will be Larry Archer, John Delano, Dewayne McCarty, Bill George, Eddie Proctor, Sammy Harjo and a host of others.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cross Timbers Hospice, 207 C Street NW, Ardmore, Okla. 73401 or to the Lone Grove Church of Christ, 447 Heritage Street, Lone Grove, Okla. 73443.

Robert Norris Sr.

Robert Wayne Norris Sr. died in Wewoka, Okla. on Thursday, May 30, 2013, at the age of 77.

He was born on Aug. 2, 1935 in Holdenville, Okla. to William Coy Norris and Minnie Luticia (Grissom) Norris.

He was brought up and attended schools in the Moss community, and was a 1953 graduate of Moss High School.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1954, and served for two years.

He married Dortha Ann Kiser on Feb. 25, 1956, in Wetumka, Okla.

He worked at various jobs, among them as an accountant for Cessna aircraft in Wichita, and in Oklahoma as a truck driver/distributor for Guy’s Potato Chips, Wonder Bread, and a milk distributor.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Minnie Norris; one sister, Vivian Sharp; five brothers: Cecil Norris, J. C. Norris, Jack Norris, Jimmy Norris, and infant Raymond Norris; and one grandson, Josh Avery.

He is survived by his wife, Dortha of the home; four children, Debra Deer of Wewoka, Robert Jr. of Holdenville, Rhonda Ryel of Jenks, Clifford of Houston, Tex.; 11 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; two sisters, Loretta Brittain of Holdenville, and Sue Pedersen of Wichita, Kan.; and one brother, Harold Norris of Stafford, Ariz.

Funeral services were Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Home’s Lillye Chapel, and he was laid to rest in the Holdenville Cemetery. Rev. Mike Deer and Rev. Luke Morrison were the officiating ministers.

Pallbearers were Sonny Kiser, Ricky Kiser, Ronnie Kiser, Rick Branscum, Ryan Orr, and Bobby Brittain.

Honorary pallbearers were Tommy King, Eric Norris, Barney Brittain, and Glen Pedersen.

Services were under direction of Fisher Funeral Home of Holdenville. www.fisherfh.net
