Leon McDonald
Leon "Lonnie" McDonald, Jr., 69, one of God's best soldiers, passed to his heavenly home Monday at a local hospital after a valiant battle with cancer.
Lonnie was born Nov. 13, 1942, in Idaho Springs, Colorado, to Leon and Marie Holm McDonald.
When his dad returned from service in World War II the family moved to the Little area, north of Seminole.
He grew up there and graduated from Varnum High School where he played baseball and basketball.
He was baptized as a teenager into the Lord's church at the Little church of Christ.
He then went to Oklahoma Christian College (now university) where he met his wife-to-be, Ann Lanier of Shawnee.
They were wed Nov. 25, 1961, at the Central church of Christ in Shawnee and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year.
He resumed his education at OCC but it was interrupted in September 1966 when he was called into military service.
While in the army he was assigned to the Berlin Brigade in Germany, known as the "Defenders of the Wall".
During his 17 months there he reached the rank of sergeant and was given several awards for exemplary service. It was also there he first taught Bible classes and preached for the church.
Upon his return to civilian life, he and Ann made their home in Shawnee.
He worked in the auto parts business for several years as well as returning to serve his country in Oklahoma National Guard.
He eventually retired as a full-time Guardsman with the 160th Field Artillery serving in Seminole, Pauls Valley and Chandler.
After his retirement he worked at Unit Liner in their Pond Pro Shop, which he ranked up there with church, home and Lowes as his favorite places to be.
His most notable work was his service to Lord as a deacon and later as an elder, first at the East Main and later the Northridge churches of Christ.
He went on many mission trips over the years, including Cuernavaca, Mexico, and Quito, Ecuador.
He loved God's word and continually studied "showing himself approved by God."
He and Ann began their family when he returned from Germany and he was extremely proud of his children. They are his daughter Amy and husband Todd Foxx of Nixa, Missouri, his son Clay of Piedmont and his son Ryan and wife Dwan of Midwest City.
His special little blessings in the form of grandchildren include Kellen, Garrett, Gannon and Callie Foxx and Madison, Mallori and Mason McDonald plus a new granddaughter expected in about two months.

Those passing before him include his parents, his father and mother-in-law, Leon and Lois Lanier and a sister-in-law, Patti Lanier. He also lost three siblings at their birth.
He enjoyed being involved with his kids in camping and their sports activities and coached many of their teams.
He and Ann went on many "cruises", trips they took with no particular destination and discovering really "cool" places.
He was looking forward to cruising in his 1966 Mustang he and Ann bought new 46 years ago and is being restored.
Favorite trips recently were to the World Series and the anniversary celebration with all his family at Grand Lake for their 50th anniversary.
Lonnie leaves behind a legacy of honesty, dedication and hard work and his ability to build or repair anything.
He was a quiet man who loved his family unconditionally and taught them to love the Lord by his example.
He will be greatly missed by them and by his church family and everyone who knew him during his life.
He showed his quiet courage through these months as he fought his cancer.
The family would appreciate remembrances be made in his name to World Bibles for Christ, Northridge church of Christ; the Search TV Program, Edmond church of Christ, P.O. Box 371, Edmond, 78082, or the American Cancer Society .
