Verna Valentine

Verna Louise Valentine died at the age of 71 Tuesday, July 10, 2012 in Tulsa.

She was born Jan. 28, 1941 in Seminole.

She is survived by her husband, Clide Junior Valentine of Tulsa; daughters, Loveta Newbolt, Vicki Eklund and Stacy Pierce; son, Gary Valentine of Osage; sister, Jean Thomason of Collinsville; numerous grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Nellie Louise (Cochran) Weese; children, Sheryl Jean Snyder and Michael J. Everett and three sisters.

Memorial Services have been entrusted to Mark Griffith Memorial Funeral Home Westwood Chapel in Tulsa and will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the Mark Griffith Westwood Chapel in Tulsa with the Reverend Tom Shaw officiating.

Richard Van Sandt

Wewoka native Richard B. Van Sandt, credited with defending and enhancing living standards for Sliddell, La., while serving on the City Council for 16 years, died late Friday. He was 76.

Van Sandt had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, before dying in his home in the Slidell area, said his son, Scott.

Van Sandt was born in Wewoka, Okla., in 1935. He attended the University of Houston and University of Mississippi prior to serving in the Air Force from 1954 to 1958. He eventually retired from Chevron USA as an assistant aviation buyer.

In 1982, Van Sandt successfully campaigned for his first term representing Slidell City Council District C, which encompassed the Palm Lake community he lived in for some time.

He subsequently won three consecutive re-elections to his post but lost his bid for a fifth term in 1998.

Aside from his son, Van Sandt is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters, Jerri Guthrie Reeves and Cindy Guthrie Suarez; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday at First Pentecostal Church, 388 Robert Blvd. in Slidell. Visitation is at noon. Honaker Funeral Home in Slidell is handling the arrangements.

Ralph Vandiver

Ralph Cecil Vandiver, Sr., of Pauls Valley, was born Aug. 4, 1911 in Lindsay, Oklahoma to James Elonzo and Verdie Mae (Cecil) Vandiver.

He passed away June 11, 2012 in Pauls Valley at the age of 100 years.

At a young age he would go to school. Then after school he would come home and work in the broom corn fields.

Later he worked in service stations and for Theo McNeer in the grocery business in Lindsay.

While attending Lindsay High School he was very active in sports.

Ralph participated in football and basketball and was on the winning team that made the State Championships in football his senior year.

Following high school he was interviewed for the G.F. Wacker Stores by his brother-in-law Straus Baker; and got the job!

Ralph worked for G.F. Wacker Stores in Seminole, where he met Arlene Sinclair.

They were married in Seminole on Oct. 9, 1932.

He became a Buyer for the Wacker Stores for several of their departments.

On May 5, 1944 he began service in the United States Navy and is a Veteran of World War II.

Upon his return from his tour of duty he continued his work with the G.F. Wacker Stores.

In 1962 he and his family moved to Pauls Valley, where he continued his work for the G.F. Wacker Stores, until his retirement.

He was an extremely avid rose gardener. He had 28 varieties of roses in his personal rose garden and was instrumental in helping to create the Rotary Rose Garden in Wacker Park.

He was a very faithful member of the Rotary Clubs in Seminole and later in Pauls Valley, as well as an active member in the First United Methodist Church and a member of the Pauls Valley Historical Society.

He and Arlene were also very avid travelers. They toured on 22 cruises as well as traveling in Europe, Asia, places in Africa, Hawaii, Alaska and many other places world-wide.

Surviving family include his daughters and their husbands, Mary Jo and Robert Hamrick of Parker, Texas and Donna Louise and Bobby Gene Knapp of Oklahoma City; a daughter-in-law, Marilyn Vandiver of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren, David Hamrick, Beth Petty and her husband, Richard, Vickie Hamrick, Steven Knapp, Kirk Vandiver and Wendy Vandiver; a great grandson, Kiel Vandiver Petty; three step great-grandchildren, Michael Petty and his wife, Shauna, Eric Petty and his wife, Ashley, and David Petty and his wife, Nikki, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, James Elonzo and Verdie Mae Vandiver; his wife, Arlene Vandiver; their son, Ralph Cecil Vandiver, Jr.; two sisters, Sula Baker and Nell Tatum and his brothers, Joe and Edwin Vandiver.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 15, 2012 at 10:30 am at First United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Mark Watson.

Interment will be at Rose Hill Burial Park under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.

Edward VanHorn, 68

December 21, 1943 - March 14, 2012

Edward R. VanHorn, 68 year-old resident of Maud, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Seminole.

Edward was born on Dec. 21, 1943 in Mohawk, New York to parents Lynn VanHorn and Mary (Erb) VanHorn.

Edward worked in Civil Construction for the City of Mohawk, New York as a Motor Grader Operator.

While in Mohawk, New York, Edward served on the school board, he also owned and operated his own gun shop, served as a 32nd degree Mason and was of the Episcopal faith.

Edward married Hilda (Youngs) VanHorn in Town of Ohio, New York on March 19, 1982.

Edward moved to Maud, four years ago from Mohawk, New York.

Edward possessed a great love for hunting, fishing and spontaneous adventures.

He loved to meet new people and make everyone laugh each and everyday.

He was a loving father, grandfather and a devoted husband.

Edward loved life and he lived it well.

Edward is survived by his wife, Hilda; two daughters, Tania Jackson of McLoud, Tami Markessinis of Albany, New York. He is also survived by two brothers, Chuck and James VanHorn both of Oregon and one sister Elaine Kreuger of North Carolina. Four grand children also survive Edward, Danielle Mackey, Alexandria Jackson and Victoria Jackson all of McLoud, and Nicholas Markessinis of Albany, New York.

Edward was preceded in death by his parents; Lynn and Mary VanHorn and half brother Gerald.

A private funeral service for Edward will be held 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at the Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel.

Cremation services are under the direction of Swearingen Funeral Home of Seminole.

Ricky Vaught

Memorial Services are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb 25, 2012 at Church of Christ Cromwell, for Ricky Lee Vaught. James Branscum will officiate.

Born June 22, 1957 in Oklahoma City, to Millard Dayne Vaught and Mary Elizabeth (Long) Vaught. He died Saturday, Feb 18, 2012 in Cromwell, after a long battle with cancer at the age of 54 years.

Prior to his illness he worked in the oilfields as a driller.

Survivors include his parents Millard and Mary Vaught, two sons Richard Colby Vaught and Charles Eugene Vaught, both of Cromwell. Three sisters Janie Deatherage, Tracy McNabb of Okemah, and Leslie Sanders of Cromwell; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Arrangements are by Stout-Phillips Funeral Home.

Clayton Wadlow

Clayton "Dewayne Wadlow, 69 Wewoka died April 27, 2012.

He was born March 17, 1943 in Galey, Oklahoma to Ordor Clayton and Annie Exula (Stone) Wadlow.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry Wadlow of Wewoka; two sons Jerry Wadlow of Wewoka and Donnie Shaffer of Asher; one sister, one brother; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson Brandon Wadlow; one brother and one sister.

Private Family Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Mary Waldron-Armstrong

Mary Lynn (Tillman) Waldron-Armstrong, age 66, resident of Konawa died Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012 at Swearingen Funeral Home Chapel in Konawa. Rev. Ed Bray, Pastor of Cross Timbers Church in Konawa will officiate.

Pallbearers are Tim Sanders, Johnny Sires, Woodie Hurt, Ron Moore, Darrell Armstrong, and Frank Lopez.

Honorary pallbearers are John Sires, Jacob Hurt, Timothy Sanders, Blaine Armstrong, Dallas Armstrong, Tomas Lopez, Denim Sanders, and Trace Sanders.

She was born March 1, 1946 in Pampa, Texas to James Tillman and Betty (Irby) Myatt.

She graduated from Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City and retired as a seamstress for Wrangler in Seminole.

She is survived by her husband, Billy Joe Armstrong of the home; one son, Darrell Armstrong of Crowley, Texas; five daughters, Jamie Sires of Dale, Jana Hurt of Mounds, Jalonna Moore of Konawa, Sebrina Sanders of Konawa, and Michelle Lopez of Tecumseh; five brothers, James Tillman of Atlanta Georgia, Edd Myatt of Konawa, Danny Tillman of Washington, Don Tillman of Konawa and Eddie Tillman, also of Konawa; two sisters, Margaret Tillman of Norman and Shirley Akins of Chickasha; sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Tillman and Betty Myatt; one grandson, Montana Moore; one brother, one sister, and step-father, Carl Myatt.

Eva Walker

Eva Jolene Walker, died at her residence in Shawnee on Jan 5, 2012.

Eva Jolene was born to Anna Marie Miller Terronez and Johnny Rae Walker on Oct 16, 2011 at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City.

Eva is preceded in death by her grandfathers, Rev. Alan D. Miller and Johnson Alexander; grandmother Pauline Butler and uncle Milan Todd Miller.

She is survived by her mother Anna, father, Johnny Ray Walker of Shawnee; brothers Marty Iyo Terronez, Brandon Ehologee Terronez, Alan Charles Todd Miller and Michael Eco Haney; sisters, T-Anna Fuscate Lena and Janaya Lee Walker; grandmothers, Carol Miller and Penny Palmer and grandfather, James Leon Walker.

Eva Jolene will be brought to her grandmother’s house, 910 N Shawnee St. #11. Visitation will be until Monday afternoon when she will be moved to Snake Creek Baptist Church, North of Seminole.

Wake services will be held on Monday, Jan 9, 2012 at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan 10, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Snake Creek Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Cornelius Family Cemetery. Pastor Dan Factor and Pastor Houston Tiger will officiate the service.

Services are entrusted to Brown’s Funeral Parlor of Wellston, Oklahoma.
