George Harris

Konawa native George William Harris embodied the character of the unassuming heroic American profiled by Tom Brokaw in The Greatest Generation. He left us at age 86 on November 13, 2009.

George was born and raised by local pioneers Joe and Maude Harris as the youngest of seven children on their property a half-mile north of Summers Chapel. During Joe’s tenure as Justice of the Peace, a very young George was featured humorously and fondly in the Leader riding heavy construction machinery as the tag-along "real" boss of a local public works project.

The family navigated the 1930’s Depression with some hardship but much resilience and good will, frequently offering homegrown food to less fortunate itinerant strangers. As World War II approached, George joined the National Guard and soon deployed to the German front with the 45th Division. He saw combat action in North Africa, Sicily and finally Anzio where he was captured, subsequently surviving 15 difficult months in a Prisoner of War camp. On his release, he learned that his father has passed away while he fought for the principles and country they both loved. He and his siblings then contributed financial and moral support to ensure that their mother and invalid brother were able to remain in their cherished home.

George married his high school sweetheart, earned an accounting degree and served in key financial management positions for the Cold War-era Department of Defense. He retired to San Diego at 60 to enjoy travel, biking, bridge and the camaraderie of family and many friends. In his personal and professional relationships, he was a bedrock of reliability, loyalty and balanced good humor. The contributions and sacrifices he made as a patriot and patriarch were known by a select few, and only then when probed. A knowledgeable citizen and positive contributor to our complex world, his personal satisfaction came from meeting his own high standards as family man, friend and humanitarian. He lived in the present, meeting both challenges and good fortune with aplomb and appreciation for the precious gift of life.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Oberia Sanders Harris of Hazel. They are both commemorated at Midwest City’s Arlington Cemetery beside the gravesite of her father (James Newton Sanders) near the front of the mausoleum. He is survived by his son Joe of Coronado, granddaughter Cassandra of Honolulu, and grandson Brandon with his wife and three daughters of Carmel.

The family requests a place in your prayers for this proud son of Konawa.

Oberia Harris

Oberia Mae Sanders Harris, 84, passed away suddenly at her home in San Diego, California, on April 24, 2009.

Born and raised on a farm near Konawa, and a graduate of Konawa High, Oberia traveled widely, made friends professionally and personally around the world, and left a lasting, positive impression on everyone she met.

When she graduated from high school, World War II was imminent. Her fiancée, George Harris (also from Konawa), joined friends in the 45th Division and fought first in North Africa, then Sicily, and finally in Italy where he was declared Missing in Action at Anzio. This was difficult news for Oberia, who shortly thereafter relocated to Alameda, California, and obtained a job to help the war effort. George was later found to be a Prisoner of War transported to Germany where he spent 15 harrowing months in a prison camp.

At War’s end the two were wed, and then shared 64 years of happy marriage. Both worked for the Department of Defense for 40 years until their retirement to San Diego. They lived mostly in Colorado Springs, but volunteered for occasional duty in foreign countries, including RAF Alconbury in Great Britain, and assignments with the American embassies in Ankara, Turkey, and Ottawa, Canada.

In the Defense Department assignments, Oberia came to be the executive secretary for a succession of base commanders and general officers. The common refrain repeated many times was that she ran 90% of the operations so that her bosses could focus on the rest.

It was the same in her family and community lives. A consummate teammate, she shouldered much of the load and made everyone around her a better person. She had a contagious laugh and was comfortable discussing small town Americana, urban issues, geopolitics, or the poetry of Blake and Wordsworth. She also enjoyed bridge and folk dance. She was just plain good company.

Oberia was a gracious, spiritual and generous woman. A particularly valued gift to her family was her strength of character. This included assurances over the years of her pride in them, and that she herself had led a full and satisfying life with an acceptance of the inevitability of death as part of the natural cycle. While her passing was a shock, we know that she is in a place she wants to be.

She is survived by her husband; son, Joe of Coronado; granddaughter, Cassandra, of Honolulu; and grandson, Brandon with his wife and three daughters, of Carmel.

Should you be so moved, the family requests a place in your prayers for this wonderful woman who held her childhood memories and ongoing adventures of the town, the surroundings and the citizens of Konawa in fondest regard.
